AC/DC Fans Tell Band: Change The Setlist! - Nov. 6, 2009
A group of AC/DC fans has written an "open letter" to the band via the web site www.acdcfans.net pleading for the group to change the show setlist. The "Black Ice" tour has featured nearly the same songs in the same exact order (with a couple of small adjustments) since the start of the tour.

The letter reads as follows:

"Dear Malcolm, Angus, Cliff, Phil and Brian,

"acdcfans.net represents an extremely vocal group of your most loyal fans. Just a handful of us have collectively attended more than 157 of your concerts (and counting) since 1978 and estimate we've contributed more than USD $84,000 (and counting) to the AC/DC juggernaut. We are just the tip of the iceberg.

"Now while those numbers may seem insignificant given your touring history and estimated wealth, for us the numbers represent a passionate investment of time and hard earned money in your music. We are AC/DC fans for life, and we wouldn't change that for the world.

"However, there is something we'd like AC/DC to consider changing...

"The setlist.

"On the current 'Black Ice World Tour', during which some of us having travelled across Europe, the United States and flown between the two continents (with flights already booked to Australia to catch the Australian leg), we have listened to you play the same great songs each and every night. We absolutely appreciate every song you play, but we can't help but wonder if the band is getting a little bored of playing the same songs night after night.

"Are you aware there are thousands of fans just like us who have spent months discussing the 'Black Ice World Tour' setlist, every one of them hoping that the band will play something other than songs geared towards casual fans? — the sort of fans that put money in your pockets, but who don't have the same level of passion for your music as us. They may cheer at the concerts, they may go home happy... but they only came to hear 'Thunderstruck'. They don't eat, sleep and shit AC/DC like we do.

"As the greatest band on Earth, we think it is a travesty that you are not playing songs that are dear to yourselves and your long term loyal fans — the songs from albums that critics wrote off, but which we both know are some of the finest from your back catalogue.

"So, we'd like you to consider changing the setlist. We won't be rude and say 'play this' or 'don't play that' — we'll leave it to you to decide — surprise us!

"Please give us, and the many thousands like us, some hard-hittin', heavy rockin' tracks that we, the true long term fans of AC/DC, know and love."

AC/DC's setlist on the current tour:

01. Rock 'N' Roll Train
02. Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be
03. Back In Black
04. Big Jack
05. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
06. Thunderstruck
07. Black Ice

Suicide Solution
War Pigs*
I Don't Want to Change The World

I saw AC/DC on Oct. 23 in Atlanta, and much to my surprise, they pulled out some songs I wasn't expecting. I had taken a peek at the set list before the show, and I swear I didn't see these songs (which they played):

Shot Down in Flames (after Dirty Deeds)
Dog Eat Dog (after War Machine)

Dog Eat Dog was especially a big thrill for me, since it's one of my favorites and came as a complete surprise...

I'm not sure on the reason why they added these gems for that night, but I suspect it might have something to do with the band's brief tour hiatus for Brian to take a breather. It was their third show or so after that break.

Anyway, it was great to see them break out of the routine. Did anyone else see them play these songs at another venue on the tour?

These fans are absolutely right. Their setlist, along with Kiss', has to be the most stale, predictable, uninspired and outright shit ever put on stage. Every worn out hunk of crap classic at their disposal. How about something from 'Flick of the Switch', 'Fly on the Wall', 'Blow Up Your Video' or 'Ballbreaker'? A few rarities from Bon Scott era maybe? For fucks sake just reading that setlist makes me mentally ill. Who the fuck still wants to hear 'Back In Black'?

They are damn right and I will never understand why bands with such back catalogue do no change the setlist. It happens the same with Iron Maiden: they are my faves but they are very `comfortable´ (sort to say) playing the same classics over and over again. Look at Slayer for example: they change 4 or 5 songs every tour and THAT is refreshing.

Angus is 50 fucking something and still sweating out 8-10 pounds per show. Have some respect for these guys who still give 110% into every minute of every show. These guys are Rock and Roll, Period.

Sure I'd love to hear the some other tracks but I'm just so very happy and respectful of these guys still touring at such a high level at this point in their careers. Black Ice was a great album and World Tour.

AC/DC needs to play songs from Powerage. Probably the most underated AC/DC album and I hold it as high as Highway to Hell, Let There Be Rock and Back In Black. Riff Raff, Kicked in the Teeth, What's Next to the Moon, great songs all the way through.

To respond to the Ozzy comment, you're right shattered73, Ozzy needs to get out of his comfort zone. I've seen him 3 times and that was the exact set list for two of the shows. But, that being said, I might have witnessed the greatest Ozzy concert ever. In 2003, when he had Jason Newsted on bass, Ozzy played a whopping 160 minutes, including nine Sabbath numbers. Here's the setlist.

War Pigs
Mr. Crowley
Believer
Flying High Again
I Don't Know
Gets Me Through
Goodbye To Romance
Bark At the Moon
The Wizard (Ozzy on harmonica)
After Forever
Into the Void
Fairies Wear Boots
Iron Man
Sweet Leaf
Children of the Grave
Fire In the Sky
Miracle Man
Suicide Solution (with Zakk Wylde solo)
No More Tears
I Don't Want To Change the World
Road To Nowhere
Crazy Train
ENCORES
Mama, I'm Coming Home
N.I.B.
Paranoid

Props to the fans for doing something like this, it's finally overdue not only for these guys but dozens of other bands that have been sitting in their comfort zone and doing the same predictable sets for years now. I can't believe this is the first time it's been done, or maybe it's just the first time we're hearing about it.

I know AC/DC isn't the Grateful Dead, but I'm sure a little variety wouldn't kill anyone, and would be a welcome surprise. There's lots of reasons bands can't mix up their sets, mostly it's a case of a show having so much coordinated production, i.e. light programming/videos, etc where you just can't do it. I don't think there was any spontaneity to Pink Floyd's live shows anytime after the Animals tour because the production was so tight. I've never seen AC/DC live, but from footage I have seen, their show is really complex, and they can't pull some surprises out because it's not part of the production.
Even Metallica's sets got tired and predictable until the tour for St. Anger where they started pulling out some of the old gems...not saying they didn't write the setlist ahead of time, but the same old shit all the time sucks. You would think they would WANT to start playing some rare stuff and improvise more, just to keep themselves sharp...and shit, for what they charge for admission, it's the least they can do, especially if this many fans are demanding it.

they need to change it up a bit. They do sneak in a new song or two but since the early 90s they have kept Mandatory Suicide, Angel of Death, Chemical Warfare, South of Heaven, Hell Awaits, Antichrist, Dead Skin Mask and a couple others as their main set. I know they add a couple here and there but they have kept those staples for too long. With so many amazing songs and no real "hits" they could put in a lot of good songs they never even played live.

I agree with the AC/DC people, it gets boring. Cater to your die hard fans and play some of your other great songs.

Yeah, I got those two songs in Boston(foxboro). I'm not complaining, but I could easily list 10 songs from For those about to rock(album, not song) through Blow up Your Video that I'd like to hear. I'd suggest 1 less new song, one less song off back in black and rotate the other slots.

They did play a great show.

I agree with the ozzy stuff too. I've seen him probably 7 times, and I won't go again unless something significantly changes. He's got a ton of great tunes that are ignored(ultimate sin, No rest, Ozzmosis, do you remember those records?)

Devils advocate here but tours are not meant for traveling fans to see a show 100 times (unless you are a village hippie). They are to get the music out to the people. If someone wants to go see a band play on the same tour 10 times and they get the same set 10 times, well duh.

There are only a few bands out there that actually change the setlist up each night and each tour.

Metallica has been doing a great job of this on their current tour. They change the order and play anything and everything, stuff like Trapped Under Ice, Through the Never, Dyers Eve, Phantom Lord... I mean Metallica deserve a 'hats off' for what they have done this tour.

There is no excuse for bands like AC/DC, Maiden etc that play the same set every damn tour with a few exceptions.

It's just pure laziness imo.

Dream Theater also change up the set list, although lately they have been playing only 90 min sets, which means 3 or 4 songs lol. They aren't worth spending your money on unless they play for 2, 2.5 hours.

Other bands not in metal that change the sets every night; REM and The Cure. Both usually play 2.5 - 3 hours and typically 25 - 30 songs.

It just comes down to laziness and how much the band really wants to be actually touring and playing live. Some bands like Rush don't change the set, but they still give you 26 - 30 songs !!!

Plus Rush pulled out rarities like Entres Nous, Circumstances, etc on the last tour.

A band like AC/DC with such a vast catalouge, and such simple songs - there is no excuse not to be playing at least 20 songs and a good mix of hits, new, and obscure tunes.

Someone above called out KISS for their setlist as well. While I wish the band would "lock in" a few of their deeper cuts, at least they're working songs in and out throught this tour. 25 different tunes have been worked in and out of their 18 song set so far, and that's just for the initial dates. Not too bad.

Ozzy's setlist really needs an overhaul. Maybe that happens now with the additon of Gus.

My opinion echoes what very few have said here: I think this open letter is bullshit. I don't know if there are people out there that are aware of just how hard touring is, overall. Give them a break!! If you're a fan (of any band really), be lucky if they're still out & about. I don't know, this letter just rubs me the wrong way. Greedy fans (in general) expecting things from bands, whether it's a picture/autograph/change in set list is unacceptable to me. But, that's **just my opinion**
Hell, this letter could in fact persuade them to change their set, who knows?

How can you say maiden play the same setlist on every tour? I know they don't change the songs while on tour, due to there stageset and backdrops, but they always surprise when on a new tour. On the SBIT tour they played songs that haven't been played since the 80s and on the AMOLAD tour they dropped almost all the crowd pleasers except FOTD, 2MTM and TETMD. They played those 3 songs, iron maiden and hallowed by thy name (the only 2 songs you are 100% sure to hear at a maiden show) and 10 new songs!!!

they could easily drop most of those songs. the only ones they really need to do for casual fans is :
dirty deeds/highway/back in black/ shook me all night...thats it !!! all those other songs need to be replaced.
i wish they would go on a " obscure song tour " . they would still make plenty/sell plenty. i think it would be fun for the band and a tribute to the loyal fans.. no staple songs !!!!
how about skipping black ice because they've just toured that cd.
play 2 songs off of the other 11 releases, thats 22 songs. and no staples.. example :fly on the wall...no title track ....instead : danger/ standup...

When your fasn are asking for a change it tells you you should either consider what they ask for or retire. AC/DC already suffers from a catalogue of very similarly sounding material so having a standard set-list added to the equation can only lead to frustration of the fans side.

I don't even consider AC/DC a band I really like, but seeing them live, i'd like to hear something different than the same songs we hear everywhere. I can only imagine how real fans of the band would wish for a change.

Saw them for free at a casino in wa, and, surprisingly, thoroughly enjoyed tge show. The guitar player who plays angus could probably go without taking her shirt off though.

Now, if the singer did it, THAT would have been amazing. But regardless, it was a good time.

In regards to the legends themselves, I would say that it's possible these fans are afraid this is one of tge last tours they will be doing for retiring, and are hoping to catch their favorite hidden gem performed one time before then. C.O.D. or Spellbound - I know FTATRock is a staple track.
Why not Have a Drink On Me or Let Me Put My Love... or they could do Givin' the Dog A Bone in their sleep.
Badlands or Rising Power/Guns For Hire - Flick of the Switch
And Powerage is a classic (Gone Shootin' - personal fav.)
I also like Night Prowler and If You Want Blood (good songs as well)-------------------------

Smash N' Grab (take it)
Rock n' Roll Dream

Can't go wrong w/ Black Ice. really. just you know, mix it up.

Maiden is worse offenders than Ac/Dc just because those songs are very different in nature than the Ac/Dc songs are.

Maiden - Please play some more from Somewhere In Time (title track) Sea of Madness or Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner...My fav. Maiden lp, btw.
And please release MAIDEN ENGLAND with such choice cuts as 'Still Life' & 'The Prisoner' We want information, information, infor - who are you?, etc....

good selections are all from the Black Ice Lp. IMO.

Every stop to think that, by looking at the setlist, that almost all of the songs are genuine true AC/DC hits, the same songs that most AC/DC fans want to hear when they see them live? They don't cater to the small minority group who splurge on touring the world with them, they cater to those in the majority who go to a show in their hometown, the only time they see them on the tour. Just think before calling the band out for this.

As someone who saw 3 shows on the 2003 mini tour where they played tracks like RnR Damnation, Gone Shootin', What's Next to The Moon and If You Want Blood I find it hard to believe that they didn't see the crowd reaction to those tunes. People went apeshit!

I went to my first (hopefully not the last) AC/DC show last night in Austin. 2 hours of kick ass rock from a dedicated high energy band. Nothing to complain about in regards to the setlist. I just wish the SWAG was not so expensive!!

Some bands don't change the set lists up, because of the amount of money and time they put into their stage shows. Iron Maiden and Rush are prime examples of this. There are very few songs that could be changed out each night, if they chose to do so, because most every song is tied into a part of the stage show. One can hardly say that bands are being lazy, if this is the reason why.

I didn´t say the same setlist, but the same CLASSICS, ok? An example: how can they play in the `Somewhere in time+7th son´ tour (I don´t remember the name now sorry) `Fear of the dark´? That does not belong to that age, they should have stuck to that age, and the problem with Maiden is that they DON´T change the setlist in a tour and they ALWAYS play the SAME CLASSICS, right? When Bruce came back they played `Phantom of the opera´ and some unusual classics, I enjoyed the hell out of that show because it was REFRESHING Brucewise and songpickingwise, but from in the following tours they started to skip the `unusual´ songs becoming comfortable again, combining the SAME classics with the songs of the new albums, and I have seen Maiden 10 times and they are my fave band.

yoou have either seen the tour or nthe band and now consider yourself bored by the hits.
I have seen AC?DC this year for the first time and though the set was awesome - they played everything I wanted to hear.
I've seen Maiden numerous times and tour to tour they do things differently... and yet when the did AMOLAD in it's entirety people I was with (who have seen the band about 20 times) complained that they weren't playing the hits.
At the end of the day you pay your money and it'll either be worth it or it won't. If you start making stupid caveats as to why you enjoy it then why waste your money going.
