JOE PERRY Says STEVEN TYLER 'Quit' AEROSMITH
- Nov. 7, 2009
|
|
AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry told the Las Vegas Sun on Friday (November 6) that singer Steven Tyler quit the band following a recent concert in Abu Dhabi. " Steven quit as far as I can tell," Perry said. "I don't know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don't know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know." Part of the problem, Perry said, is that Tyler doesn't return his phone calls. "He's notorious for that," Perry said. "That's one thing I've learned to live with. I try to overlook it. I like to pick my battles. Frankly, the last few months I've been wanting not to rock the boat. I don't want him canceling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We just kind of didn't want to call him out or anything and get him anymore pissed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie. So we did the gigs and, like I said, I got off the plane and saw this online. That's how I know about it." Perry said he arrived home in Boston on Wednesday and read on the Internet that Tyler planned to leave the band. "He has had no contact with me or the other band members," Perry said. He says he hopes to keep AEROSMITH together, with or without Tyler, but he was so stunned by recent developments he doesn't know what's going to happen. "Right now I'm adjusting to how we're going to go on," Perry said. " AEROSMITH is such a powerful band, I mean it's like a steam locomotive. You just can't disregard 40 years of four guys who play together as well as they do. We're just trying to — at least I am — trying to figure out what direction the band should take. "As far as replacing Steve, it's not just about that, it's also four guys that play extremely well together, and I'm not going to see that go to waste. I really don't know what path it's going to take at this point, but we'll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we'll be able to move the Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch." Read more from the Las Vegas Sun.

But if Tyler is going to act the rock star & cause the band to cancel shows, then fuck him. I haven't liked anything this band has done since "Done With Mirrors", everything after that seemed contrived & was really a parody of what Aerosmith was. There are plenty of singers who could pull off the job, shit like 'em or not Josh Todd from Buckcherry could easily step in & do the vocals, plenty more could too. So ya if Tyler is being a bitch then fuck 'em, get someone else!

If Tyler leaves Aerosmith, then Aerosmith is no more. If Joe wants to keep playing with the other members, that's fine, I'm all for that, but you'd HAVE to change the name of the band. Few bands have been able to get away with replacing a singer and keeping their name, but I don't think there is any way Perry & Co. could do it. A vast majority of the fans (including myself) would reject it. This band hasn't released anything good since Nine Lives anyway (Just Push Play was a paradigm of Pop Rock mediocrity and I half expected/hoped they'd call it quits afterwards). Remember the SuperBowl halftime show with them sharing the stage with N'Suck and Ms. Spears??? *Cringe* I knew at that moment they were going to cash in on the soul-less pop infestation of the time. If Steven Tyler is done with the band, then it's time to lay the Aerosmith name to rest. The "power" of this band isn't just in the name. Well, maybe the SELLING power is, but it's time to stop living off of that name and prove their power with something else. Maybe then they'll be able to retain/regain some respect from fans like me.

First of all, Joe Perry can't write any songs. Listen to his solo stuff.. it repetitive and boring as hell.
Second, Steven Tyler is the voice of Aerosmith. Nobody can replace him.. he has the most amazing and most recognizable vocals ever.
No Tyler = no Aerosmith. Don't matter if he's a drunk, on drugs, primadonna, and completely wasted :-) Tyler is bigger than the rest of the band. If he goes solo, lots of fans will follow him.

Who cares, how many fucking times can we see the same Tyler stage schtick, hear him go "g-g-g-g-g-aahh", spin the mic stand around, with his scarf wrapped around the mic stand. He's stale, once great, now washed up, but that's ok, it's ok to get old and retire. It's not like he didn't put out for decades, he's hard core, but he's too old now.

For a band like Aerosmith, with so many years playing, with such a recognizable frontman, which is half of one of most famous composing duets ever, it is a complete waste of time if the rest of them want to move on still using the Aerosmith brand. It's admirable, but it's stupid and a total "out of touch from reality" decision. I mean, they are old, they should know better. It's valid for ST to stay out, go solo or retire. After so many ups and downs it comes a time when you had enough of it. They should put the name to the rest, reunite from time to time while they are able to still playing and each member do whatever project is on his mind. Besides, as some people have said before Aerosmith is more pop than rock. Their last efforts are lame and I just don't care too much about them since they released that song from the Armaggedon movie, so good luck to them and I just hope that the once great Aerosmith name doesn't get covered with dirt and mediocrity.

They should all just quit while they are ahead. Aerosmith, while not be very relevant to most real music fans in the last 15 or more years, had a very successful commercial run for a very long time. I would consider it a graceful exit if they just disbanded Aerosmith altogether now. Better than turning into the Rolling Stones or Metallica

Find something nice to say here.
I'm not a fan of the post-70's Aerosmith, but this is the Stones without Jagger. Joe Perry DOES have the ego to believe that he can do the vocals, and I believe that's why he said they would get a singer to sing where they need one. But come on. Its time to hang it up. Its been time. And I guess Tyler is the only one who realizes it.

IF IF IF Steven really did quit, they should stay together under a different name and let Joe sing. Even though he's not a great vocalist, he's great in a straight forward, raw rock style.
To whomever said Perry can't write, that is really half truth... he just needs a writing partner. However, Hamilton and Whitford are more than capable songwriters. Between the three of them (Sorry, Kramer!) they could do alright.

For nearly thirty years, Aerosmith has been nothing but a pop band, and for the last fifteen, they haven't even been good at that. If the seventies material didn't exist, we'd give these guys less respect than Bon Jovi. They need to pack it in. Hopefully, Joe will put together a solid, permanent band of real rockers and start kicking ass again. If he really needs more money from arena tours, then Tyler isn't the only one with problems.

If you keep the name then go the journey route and get someone who sounds like tyler and keep the sound of the band.whatever you do don't go the priest way and get someone who is supposed to sound like halford then make records that sound nothing him or the band.whether you like owens or not there is no way you can say he or the band sound sound anything like priest on those records they made together.hate to see it happen but the other guys have a right to keep making music and money to.yler will realize what he lost when puts out a pice of crap solo record that tries to sound current.he will have every pop/hip hop performer he can find on it but it will stiff.

No kidding. Sounds like the only real problem here is the band is afraid of one of its members, and for the psyche of the band as a unit (and as a business enterprise) that just isn't going to work. The other guys need to nut up, and if Steven Tyler is going to quit because of that then he probably had one foot out the door anyway.

Awesome! I always knew Tyler was a douche. Something is just really wrong with that guy. I'd love for Aerosmith to go on without Tyler on principle alone. I hate it when band members think they are bigger than the band.

New Velvet Revolver vocalist??? I don't know if Slash would have the heart to stick it to his guitar hero Joe Perry though.

They can get Josh Todd to replace Tyler for one album and after that and the theater tour to support it tanks they'll get back together for another over-hyped "reunion". Meanwhile I hear JETBOY needs a drummer and bass player...

Aerosmith should go on hiatus until Tyler gets his shit together and the remaining band membes should do something else under a different name. Aerosmith should not continue with another singer unless Mick Jagger wants to fill in for a while ;)

Hope they dont quit, saw them live 2 years ago and they were great. the only thing was that when the best songs came the people around me did barely know them but when they played the newer more boring hits everyone was happy. its the same with most big bands like they are, Same when Metallica played all of MAster of Puppets, most of the people barely knew the fucking album and its their best album.
but live seeing Parry and Tyler faraway they looked like they were 25 or something, great stage presence and all that stuff.
but their last few albums have mostly been known for the ballads but if you give them a listen and change there are many better songs and more rocking on them.

Their music annoys me. The only tunes I ever enjoyed from this band were their first records I dug up from my father's collection. I've grown up inundated by their shitty pop ballads.
I support the idea of Perry and Co continuing with a new singer and a new band name - if he wants to rock, well, rock. Don't wait for your old high ass singer dressed like an old lady to start giving a fuck about the band again. Obviously Tyler's having fun, why not do the same?

...Hagar didn't kill Van Halen, Eddie did. First, if Eddie hadn't truned into an MTV bitch and did "Jump" David Lee Roth wouldn't have left. Eddie wanted to do more "pop rock" and when Sammy joined he knew Sammy was more likely to go along. Eddie is in control of VH, so any decisions should be laid at his feet.....by the way, Aerosmith has sucked since they did "Walk This Way" with Run DMC, so who cares if they retire....I'd bet my next paychech Steven Tyler will come out with another pop record or two to keep funding his drug habit!

On a serious note weren't they talking to WalMart only 6-8 months ago about an exclusive deal... Now I get it, Gene heard about it, stole the idea, grabbed the cash and run off. Now, Steven' pissed.

Am not a fan of one Mark Hudson, I can only imagine what he is trying to pull with Tyler; no doubt some type of Svengali angle; I just think he's bad news, look what he did to Ringo's career! Hopefully Tyler & his bandmates canget back on the same page, the sum is better than the parts! TheBeaverintheManHat

This happened about 25 years ago...everyone said, "you can't replace that guy." But Van Halen did it, I'm not saying that Steven Tyler will be replaced and those are some big shoes to fill, but maybe, just maybe Aerosmith should call it a day.

But then again...
Josh Todd could do it, pretty well I'd imagine.

you should call up slash and ask him to send over bernard edwards since they won't be needing him in a broke up velvet revolver... ;) and i'm sure the last good album aerosmith put out was 1979's night in the ruts and joe perry wasn't even on the tour. aerosmith look like my grandparents anyway... time to fold it up and lay it to rest. perry is the only one who looks good enough to carry on. i say good bye and good day.
