IRON MAIDEN Heading To Paris To Write New Material - Nov. 7, 2009
Guitarist Janick Gers of British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN revealed to BBC News that the band has already started writing songs for its 15th studio album. "We're going to Paris for three weeks to work on some new stuff," Gers said at the Classic Rock Roll Of Honour Awards 2009 on November 2 at the Park Lane Hotel in London, England. "The most important thing for a band is to create new music, otherwise you're not valid — you become a parody."

MAIDEN became the first outfit in history to travel round the world in a customized jet during their "Somewhere Back in Time" tour, as detailed in award-winning movie "Flight 666".

The Boeing 757 carried musicians, crew, gear and guests with singer Bruce Dickinson, a qualified airline pilot, at the controls.

Speaking in the Iron Maiden Fan Club magazine, IRON MAIDEN manager Rod Smallwood recently said, "It took a long time to set up the last tour because of the plane. It had never been done before and we didn't know what we were letting ourselves in for. The idea came a couple of years before that and we got into it a year ahead of the game.

"I'm starting to get my head round what we're going to do next summer. It hasn't been decided yet but we'll do something, so I've got to speak to promoters and agents.

"Now we know the plane works, by Christmas we'll have the pattern set. We'll probably be going for the plane and getting that held for us.

"But at the moment, the album's the key thing on the agenda. The guys will be getting together shortly and they're probably starting to get their heads round new ideas for songs individually. Some of them may meet up before we formally get together.

"We'll spend a period writing, we'll take Christmas off and then we'll get into recording. We'll finish the album in time for it to be out next year and I'm just getting my head round what we want to do touring-wise.

"We'll be doing some new places on the next tour. I won't tell you where they are - they're not finalized yet, but some work has been done. One place we can't play that we'd like to is Bolivia — the altitude is just too high for the type of physical performance the guys do. It's a shame."

Why is Janick still in the band? I don't think he brings anything that Dave & Adrian can't. 3 guitars aren't really necessary are they? Besides, 1 Dimebag "out heavied" these 3 guys, so I doubt it's for extra chunkiness.

If anything, I'd rather have Dave & Janick being the 2 guitarists. not Dave & Adrian.
go see them live - Janick is what Maiden's live spirit's all about. this is rock n roll - the energy of live shows, not by playing note-to-note 25 year old guitar solos. you wanna hear the studio version listen to the album.
i honestly prefer Janick's solos live than the stuido version, just for the energy. this is not a goddamn shred band. no technique competition here. this is Iron Maiden, a live act, not a cabaret act.

Janick - you're my fave!

A Matter Of Life And Death was definitely the best Maiden album in a long, long, long time. I think a lot of that came from touring on material from the first 4 albums before making it. Even though every song was quite lengthy, they never got boring. I can't even speculate on what this one will sound like. I'm psyched though. Hopefully they tour the States again and bring along some quality openers. The first time I saw them, Dio and Motorhead opened. Every time after that, not nearly as awesome....

Great news! Been a fan of Maiden since I was a teen in the 80's. Iron Maiden RULE! Looking forward to another great album and tour! Up The Irons!!

As for Janick. You know, I know that Maiden fans are sometimes split on him. But I think the majority have accepted him from what I've seen live. And I was reluctant at first to accept him way back when. But after seeing them live with him so many times, after looking into his background, etc., I've come to accept him as any other member of Maiden. And I have dvd's going all the way back, including bootlegs. So I can compare Iron Maiden with and without Janick. He puts in a lot more than some people realize. I have no problems with him.

If I had to, was forced to, pick my favorite guitarists out of Maiden, it would be Dave Murray for the way he plays. But I have a lot of respect for Adrian Smith and Janick Gers as well. Dave, Dave is truly on another planet sometimes and I think one of the greatest guitarists to ever live.

Steve has commented more than once he wanted to record 15 studio albums, so this may be it. I tried to get into AMOLAD, but it is too long-winded and slow. My least favorite from the six-man line up. I will definitely get their next album, but I don't bother getting any of their DVDs anymore. They have forsaken the US on tour so they just aren't as relevant to me anymore. That god awful Flight 666 was an abomination. How boring and self-indulgent can you get? Whatever The Irons?

Ok well straight down the line….. Iron Maiden has not had an album that you could listen from start to finish since No prayer for the dying (& even that is stretching it) what songs bar a handful from Fear of The Dark do you cry out for and then the future. Brave new world, Paschendale, The Longest Day, Dance of Death, Montsegur, Nomad, The Reincarnation of some prick you have never heard of. Maiden need another 80’s album with synth to keep the legacy going. The songs that used to gallop now march at a triumphant pace……. But that is still not Maiden. Pass on the laurels. They have done well but it is time for another. Pass the torch. Love Maiden but they can not keep up,….and anyone who thinks so is deluding themselves.

Since I bitched about the production of the new Slayer album a lot, I have to put in my cents here again:

Dear Mr. Kevin Shirley, I still think AMOLAD is the best Iron Maiden album since Seventh Son. I even wrote you a nerdy email after the release of the album, praising you for the powerful sound of Nicko's snare (finally, damnit!). What I still miss in a current Iron Maiden production is a bit more warmth and beefier sound though. Please listen to Heaven & Hell's amazing The Devil You Know for inspiration.

As for Janick: A good songwriter with occasionally enjoyable solos (Afraid To Shoot Strangers, Fear Of The Dark, Blood Brothers) but often times a bit much chaos solo-wise, live and in the studio. Nevertheless indispensable in Iron Maiden after these 20 years, same with Adrian Smith and of course Dave Murray.

Who seriously wants to do without the three part harmonies and all the other options they have now in a live setting? Listen to Flight 666, which features much better performances than Live After Death, and enjoy. Yes, you read this right. That performance of Rime Of The Ancient Mariner gives me goosebumbs.

And to all Adrian Smith lovers who also like more "alternative" sounds à la Alice Chains; check out Psycho Motel's Welcome To The World album. You won't regret it. The amazing song With You Again even features a guest solo by Dave Murray. Since I don't expect Iron Maiden to exist for more than 5 more years, I'd love to hear more Bruce + Roy Z and Welcome To The World-era Psycho Motel afterwards, maybe even together on tour?

Until then, I'll enjoy the last couple of years of Iron Maiden, the biggest classic heavy metal band of all time (since that other big band wasn't even metal for about half their career).

Thank you very much for your music!

I've been a fan of Maiden since I was a teen in the 80's. Who knows when this will really end? I know what Steve has said off an on, but honestly, until the decision is really right there in front of them, who really knows. Maiden love what they do, and have lived the life of being Maiden and touring, etc., for so long now, that it may prove hard for them to give it up. So, I'm skeptical about just when this will end.

And when it does come to an end, what will we have? Hopefully Bruce will do some more solo stuff. Hopefully there will still be some Iron Maiden releases of live shows, etc. And then there are the up and coming bands that are following in the footsteps of groups like Maiden and others, but with their own particular take on things. Right now, I can think of a couple bands that come to mind that I really like that I have gotten into. The first is ICARUS WITCH. The second is WOLF. And there are probably others that fans of Maiden might like. Please mention them if you have any suggestions.
