MEGADETH Bassist Is 'Absolutely' Open To Taking Part In WHITE LION Reunion - Nov. 7, 2009
Atomic Ned recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH bassist James Lomenzo. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Atomic Ned: If offered the right deal and it didn't conflict with what you were doing with MEGADETH, would you entertain the idea of doing a WHITE LION reunion?

Lomenzo: Oh, absolutely. I'm a journeyman, I would do that in a second.

Atomic Ned: You've played with a bunch of bands, from WHITE LION to Ace Frehley to David Lee Roth. Do you keep up with what your former bandmates are doing?

Lomenzo: Mike Tramp calls me every once in a while and lets me know what he's doing, so it's easy for me. He just went back to Denmark to be a solo star and I think that's a great idea. I suggested that years ago, and he's doing quite well. Ace Frehley … I contacted him because a friend of mine in Japan was doing an album of songs that go with animated monsters and I thought he would love that. I just keep an eye on him peripherally, we don't really speak very much, although he's been to my parents house. Every once in a while I'll see somebody who knows David Lee Roth and they'll say, "Dave says, 'hey'." There's not like a clubhouse or a batcave that we all go to and hang out.

Atomic Ned: Do you go out and listen to new releases by those bands? Like, have you heard the most recent WHITE LION CD?

Lomenzo: I'll do what everybody else does, I'll download a track or two just to see where they are at. I'm very proud of Mike. He's put together a really good band and he's carried it out. I don't think he's embarrassed the name in any way, shape or form — he's kept it pretty consistent. I feel bad that Vito [Bratta, guitar] isn't able to get together with him and come out and do that. There was a time when it seemed like it was really right for that.

Atomic Ned: Do you think Vito will ever play again?

Lomenzo: I would fathom to guess that he will not ever play again. I know there has been a lot of offers and interest and he just doesn't seem to bite.

Atomic Ned: You're connected to a few of the guitarists who have sort of disappeared. Vito Bratta, Jake E. Lee. You've done stuff with Ozzy and with Jake's replacement, Zakk Wylde.

Lomenzo: Just before WHITE LION broke, Ray Gillen, who was in BADLANDS, a dear friend of mine from way back when, called me up and said, "I know you're in L.A. and you're going to get on a plane but we need a bass player, would you come down and audition?" I was already in WHITE LION and we had already recorded our album ("Pride") but, as it goes, I said, "Let me come down, I'd love to play with Jake." Eric Singer was playing drums and we jammed for a while. It was really quite good except I remember Jake E. Lee had some sort of distortion pedal and it was really hard to hear everything he was playing. So we finished playing. There was this little bathroom in the corner so I went there because, you know, we had to go to the airport and as I'm relieving myself, in comes Ray and he goes, "Well, you want to do it?" I was like, "Dude, let's just get to the airport. Get me home and I'll think about it." We got in his car, turn on the radio, and "Wait" came on. It was the first time I had ever heard it on the radio. I looked at him and said, "You know what? It was really cool playing with you but I don't think so."

Atomic Ned: The other recluse guitarist from that time period is Vinnie Vincent. Any stories about him? Did you ever work with him?

Lomenzo: Never met Vinnie Vincent. I was at the studio with the KISS guys because of Eric Carr, who was a friend of mine, and he invited me down to the studio to listening to some tracks that Vinnie played on but he wasn't in the studio at the same time. That's my six degrees of separation.

Why would he do that? He is in the glorious machine know as Megadeth. Hahahaha ... I don't understand. He would make more money playing by himself with no band at a bar and collecting a $3 cover charge than he would touring with that forgotten outfit.

If White Lion had short hair, didn't wear spandex and weren't 100x better looking that you are, they would still be respected today as musicians. Tramp is great live, and a true WL reunion would be great. I heard from Tramp himself back in '05 that Vito is in his house and rarely comes out. Then again, Tramp's White Lion did the trick well enough when I saw them live.

It's great that some of the lesbian bands from the 80s are getting the exposure they deserve. Those girls sure knew how to rock even if they were closeted. I think it was really brave to have that video about the chick chasing the other chick who wanted take off on the subway. They could say they're just girls rockin out but that video is a bit of a closet crasher. I'm sure deep down that's probably how they wanted it.

"Wait, wait, I never got a chance to love you." Holy shit! My sides hurt from laughing so hard!

Just imagine saying that shit in real life. What would the chick think?

Girl: "You're a prick! I'm tired of taking care of your lazy ass!"
Guy: "Huh?"
Girl: "Arrgghhh! And you don't even listen to me!"
Guy: "But...babe...come on..."
Girl: "That's it! Fuck you! I'm out of here!"
Guy: "Wait! Wait! I never got a chance to love you!"

Fuck, I'm going to pee!

Megadeth should be glad they have a bass player like James. Dave Mustaine should be worshiping the ground James walks on. The bass playing on these last 2 Megadeth albums is killer... I don't care if Dave Ellfson was the original bass player, blah, blah, blah... Lomenzo smokes him, hands down. Live, Lomenzo kills. Every note is perfect and he brings an energy to Megadeth that is beyond the rehearsed stage moves that are getting pretty old. Look up some of the old Megadeth stuff on youtube and compare it to the Megadeth of today. For an older guy, James rocks... he still has it. He could play with anyone and add to their band.

As for the comment that James better watch out because Dave may fire him for saying something like that...lol.. that rocked!!! It did say in the interview that "if it did not conflict with Megadeth", though. But still, you know Dave would be steaming hotter than his coffee if he saw that...

James is and was too talented to be in White Lion. I would think that playing in Megadeth would give him much more musical satisfaction. If you are reading this James. Forget about money and decide what kind of music you want to play and what kind of venues you want to play.

Let's see, big tours and complex music with Megadeth? Clubs with Dickhead Tramp? Hmmm...

Come on now.

Was a good band IMO. Their first couple of albums were some of the best from the 80's. Great musicianship & singing from M. Tramp. Hope a reunion happens. i will be there!

"How do rock stars manage to keep all their hair? At my 20-year high school reunion, half the guys were bald or losing their hair. Do you think once you make that decision to be a rock star, you get the gift of having long hair until you stop playing? I mean, you don’t see a bald Mick Jaggar, Robert Plant, or Jon Bon Jovi!"

"Chip, I was born into metal. It chose me, I didn’t choose it. It’s not the hair, it’s not the music, it’s the deal with the devil!"

You're an idiot. What the fuck kind of musicians do you think wind up in fucking Megadeth, a band known for changing lineups quite often in its 26 year history? Journeymen. If it weren't for a pool of journeymen to pick from, Megadeth would not be able to put a lineup together every few years. Shawn Drover and Chris Broderick have been in 3 well-known bands already, so I don't know why you want to single out James Lomenzo. Dude's a musician, he can play with whoever he wants that doesn't violate any contracts or agreements. You can't make a rule that says a guy has to play in one band his entiere life. Not everyone can be Lars Ulrich.

Dude's a little sensitive. I never said anything bad about James. I just wish Megadeth had someone with thrash roots. James himself admits in other interviews that he is more of a blues based player with his playing more in tune with the 70's "Classic Rock" kind of style. Nothing wrong with that, just not what I would expect in a metal band. Also as a so called journey man it does not exactly seem like he has loyalty. l guess I'm expecting too much when I say I want a commited thrash bassist.

Not sensitive, just calling out your lack of logic. I usually don't follow up my well-stated points, but your follow up point is even more asinine. Why does he need t have "thrash roots"? He's not going to contribute a whole lot musically, regardless of his "roots". He's a bassist who has to play the notes dictated to him by Mustaine (as Ellefson mostly did). This "thrash roots" thing and his 'not fitting' your preconceived notion of what a bassist for Megadeth should look like is just more of a fascist, elitist statement. If Lomenzo can earn Mustaine's approval, I think he might just get by despite that he hasn't earned your approval.
