SATYR: 'There Are Going To Be A Lot Of Changes In SATYRICON Camp' - Nov. 7, 2009
Vocalist Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven of Norwegian black metallers SATYRICON told Terrorizer.com that the band's upcoming concert in London, England (on December 20) will mark the beginning of a new phase in the group's evolution. "From then on, there are going to be a lot of changes in the SATYRICON camp," he said. "After we take a long touring break and come back a couple of years later, certain people may not be with us any longer. Although we won't be doing anything overly dramatic, we'll be trying quite a few different things, which I think is going to be really good for SATYRICON. The reason we're doing that is so we can continue to develop our sound. At the moment we are still enjoying what we do, but if that continues any longer it'll undoubtedly stagnate, so we need to ensure that doesn't happen. And moving in different musical directions is definitely a good way to go about it."

"As an artist, there are so many new things I'd like to do," Satyr added. "And one of them is to work on some songwriting for SATYRICON, though from an entirely different angle. For example, we may chose to go for a similar tone, but use a different set of instruments in the next record. Maybe there are also other recording techniques, which could add a different element to our work and open up fresh musical territory. Our last three releases all follow a certain style and pattern, and we want to create a record that's radically different from the others. Though the foundation of SATYRICON's sound — my songwriting and Frost's signature drumming — will always remain unchanged."

I'm on board with anything this genius creates. If you don't "get" or "like" the last few albums - your loss. I really want to see where this guy will go with his musical vision. Satyr and Frost are two of the best musicians in the biz.

but they have to lose those sunglasses. It's not a good look. They made Satyr look stupid in the Black Crow on a Tombstone video.

are, are just great (haha). Not totally sure what to make out of this, because I don't think that when they went from ultra black metal to whatever you'd consider them now; as horrid (because the music's still good). I don't know, just have to see I guess.

This sounds awesome. But I'm sure most people here will disagree and call them sellouts because they don't make "true" black metal that's recorded in an abandoned castle at midnight using ancient viking instruments or some shit. Actually people have been calling them sellouts for the last several albums... and now they're just all over MTV right? Can't turn on the radio without hearing Satyricon.

You´re damn right, evolution can be possible changing the sound dramatically such as PL did with `One Second´ and mainly `Host´. It looks like Satyricon will follow that direction, we´ll see what happens and I´d be very curious to hear their new stuff, I love their last albums and I don´t consider them sellouts at all.

i smell the want to use of 7 string guitars. could be interesting. i consider their first album to be the most... interesting of their discography but volcano was highly entertaining and enjoyable as well. cant say much for the two after that. i'm glad their shifting directions a bit again. its nice at least to know what the next album WONT sound like.

were always the least important band of all the popular norwegian ones IMO. I honestly think their success has a lot to do with time and place. Even their best material pales compared to the likes of Mayhem or Emperor. Hell even Immortal are better IMO, and they have only really been considered 'top tier' since At THe Heart Of Winter.

As for 'selling out', they tried, and failed. They just never 'took' off in the way people expected.

re: Paradise Lost, 'One second' was a great record. It wasn't as successful as what it could have been for a number of reasons. 1)metal fans were less open then than now. 2)it was released on MFN, instead of a major, who didn't really know how to market the record. 3)bad timing.

Paradise Lost are probably the only metal band from the last 20 years that makes credible 'pop'.

Satyricon rules! The black metal of the 90's is gone, they're taking it to the next level. All metal is played out, I give anyone willing ti try new things a lot more respect than staying in the "safe zone"-so to speak. The new album is heavy and memorable unlike the new Marduk, Immortal, and Dark Funeral.

Volcano was more fresh than Age of Nero or Now, Diabolical. Satyricon sharpened the whole black n roll sound. But still had killers on that album like Mental Mercury or Repined Bastard Nation.

I think it would be cool if Satyricon took on a avantgarde sound like Ved Buens Ende or Code? Or maybe try a DSBM sound?

Either way the last three Satyricon albums are to me, what Eibon would've been had they stayed together long enough for a record.

i think today they're the gayest band in norway.

last good album was rebel extravaganza...at this moment they might as well be on MTV

can't believe people still associate them with black metal. shame. because they used to be amazing, and now...well...just look at the sunglasses. satyr always wanted to be a rockstar playboy. whatever floats his boat, but let's not confuse today's satyricon with what happened in the mid 90's.

As much as I enjoyed the "black n' roll" style of "Now, Diabolical", I'm a bigger fan of their earlier releases. I like the idea of innovation and bands exploring new territory, but I hope they'll also go back to a more traditional black metal sound...

they have change directions a few times looke at their first two albums "Dark Medeval Times" and my personal favorite "The Shadowthrone" they used flutes, acoustics, and sound nothing like anything on "Nemesis Divina"... I also dug "Rebel..." as though it seemed a bit more cold and industrial it still was great... they then evolved into what I call Motorhead black metal up until this last album where they seem to have found some of their old Darkthrone roots again. This band has never stuck to the same formula for long so I am sure whatever they release will kick ass.

The first three Satyricon albums are some of the best black metal albums ever made period... and Satyr was a mere teenager when he made most of them... and hell even Samoth from Emperor played in the band for awhile.

Good for Satyr - nothing wrong with "evolved" black metal. Dimmu, Cradle, Emperor, Enslaved, etc. Even Marduk has fine-tuned their relentless blastbeat sound. Better than listening to crappy Darkthrone albums that sound like bad punk demos.

I always mentioned it on previous posts, Satyricon needs real songwriting and not riff-pasting if they want to reach the next level in their career.

Rebel Extravaganza was their most daring and evolved effort and created quite a stir when it got released. If they could aim at a similar direction (read: creating a wave, not reproducing this album) and add to it strong and catchy songwriting they'd become the killer unit they always dreamed for.

And has a lifetime of music in front of him. Now Diabolical and Nero are records that stand up in relation to all music, not just in the small world of extreme metal. Very few metal albums stand up in terms of composition and sonic excellence. As far as the sellout goes, I am unconvinced. The lyrical content on it's own keeps them firmly in the underground. Satyr's enunciation and production make it impossible to ignore the message: a Satanic call to arms on Diabolica. Hanging your ass out in public like that takes nuts, not a sellout.
There is room for improvement in the variety of sounds they use. Acoustic guitars and variety in the guitar sound would be nice. Hammonds and Wurlitzers could be used as well as the horns. Also maybe recording the drums in a few different environments for the sake ov variety.
