STEVE GRIMMETT Says He Was Being Considered For Singer Position In MAIDEN, PRIEST And SABBATH
- Nov. 9, 2009
|
|
British heavy metal vocalist Steve Grimmett has told Classic Rock magazine that he nearly joined not one, not two… but three legendary bands. Grimmett, who made his name with GRIM REAPER, ONSLAUGHT and LIONSHEART, said, "When Bruce Dickinson left IRON MAIDEN, I sent them a demo. But never heard anything back from them, and then heard that Blaze Bayley had the job. But a while afterwards, their manager Rod Smallwood told me that I'd made the top five on their short list." The singer also went for the JUDAS PRIEST gig as the replacement for Rob Halford. "I did get a letter back, thanking me for my interest, but they didn't feel I was quite right for them." Finally, he was actually being lined up by BLACK SABBATH. "Drummer Bobby Rondinelli called and asked if I'd like to join the band. I was committed to doing the second LIONSHEART album ( 'Pride In Tact'), but told him that, if they could wait, then I'd love to do it. But by the time I was ready, the original lineup was back together, so that was out of the window."

This is pretty dumb, when you read the article it says he went for the positions and either didn't hear back or recieved a letter saying he wasn't what they were looking for thats hardly being considered for positions. Also I very much doubt this guy could live up to the vocal abilities of Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson he probably could sing for Black Sabbath ,but then again anyone could as you hardly have to have talent to sing for them just listen to Ozzy there is no talent vocalwise he just had an excellent personna.

Hey, In a similar vein, I nearly won a gold medal for the 100m sprint. Unfortunately I am only the 23 millionth fastest man on the planet - so I just missed out.
I was also nearly crowned miss Universe, but they sent me a letter back saying "Sorry, but you have to be a female - and good looking"
And I almost became the President of the United States. Unfortunately I'm an Aussie, I'm not a politician, and I didn't want the job..... but I told my mates I'd be great for it and they agreed - but their political pull just wasn't strong enough.
But see how many times I too have been close to greatness !!!
Wow - how similiar has our bad luck been !

I Listened to Grim Reaper back in the day. I was a teen in the 80's and Grim Reaper's SEE YOU IN HELL was one of the first Metal records I ever bought, that and Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind and Powerslave. Didn't like the rest of the Grim Reaper stuff much, but See You In Hell had a certain something about it. And it's got a cool cover. They were one of the first in the N.W.O.B.H.M. The certainly deserve some respect. Something here a bunch of stupid asshole kids no nothing about it seems.
Is the news really all that note worthy, not terribly compared to other things. But it's certainly more interesting than Mustaine bitching about Metallica some more or something. It also is fun to image Steve Grimmett singing for Iron Maiden. That certainly would have been a better deal with him than with Blaze Bailey. Though I have finally heard some of Blaze's solo material, and people are indeed right, he really can sing good when he has the right material. But even Blaze himself seems to have blown off his work in Maiden.
As someone who reads a lot of metal biographies, this news of Steve's is interesting to a point. But probably should not be up here at blabb seeing as how this place is populated by a bunch of weak babies who cry and insult like the little immature shits they are. Grow the fuck up.

i don't think a lot of the posters are making fun of Grim Reaper (whose first album did kinda rule!) but the guy basically saying he almost got 3 big gigs, which is clearly not true. Getting a letter saying you aren't right for the job is basically a rejection letter, getting your demo ignored, ditto. So if anyone is at fault here, it's Mr. Grimmett for making false claims, and that is what posters here are making fun of!

Sure, we're all doubting the accuracy of Steve's recollection of events here, especially those of us who actually owned GR albums back in the 80s (I did). It *is* funny to imagine him singing "Painkiller", "Turbo Lover", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Changes" (although I can easily see him doing "Number of the Beast"). But I think it's possible to enjoy Grim Reaper *and* recognize how ludicrous they were.

Har har! Grim Reaper were one of the most played bands on MTV in the 90's. Shame it had a voiceover by Beavis and Butthead taking the piss. But really, what a typically misleading article by Blabbermouth. I almost had dry clothes for work this morning, but A- I forgot to put them in the dryer. B- I forgot to wash them, and C- I forgot to take them off after getting drunk, falling asleep on the couch, and waking up this morning covered in cold sick, and late for work. So, another partial success...

When OZZY was getting a new drummer for the OZZMOSIS LP. I read an article in the local rock paper and I sent a tape of a band I actually was drumming for and got a form letter saying thanx for sending your tape, with big OZZY logo, wish I still had it, 'cause, then I could say I (truly) was considered to be OZZY's drummer, which by this knucklehead's story is in fact TRUE 100%.

"Rod Smallwood told me that I'd made the top five on their short list."
"Drummer Bobby Rondinelli (Sabbath) called and asked if I'd like to join the band."
The only thing here that may not be worth mentioning is that he went for the Judas Priest gig but did not get it. All this is probably told to someone in an interview off handedly, and is posted here to look like Steve's making it headline news. Oversensitive babies! Read the damn thing! That's not what's going on here. There just quotes taken out from some conversation.
I think it is something to make it onto the top 5 list for Iron Maiden, and to be asked on board Sabbath (even if it is by their drummer at the time). I think what it more comes down to is little assholes here like to feel superior by trying to pick on something. Some people just love looking down on others. All they really look like though is fools who have no respect, and apparently can't read well either. But I guess some of you here are all just too high an mighty to be interested in some simple story about the close calls of metal and things that almost were but never was. 1st place or nothing huh? You guys sound just like Bono in South Park. Congratulations on being big stinking shit #1's!

Guy does an interview. Main website and Blabbermouth type a misleading title. Souchebags come out of the woodwork to comment having not read the article.
The article reads like a blurb from a larger story, then attempted to take it out of context. Talk to any musician and they will have a similar story. I can think of dozens of singers alone. Sure are a sad lot.

If you read the quotes directly and not just the headline (fabricated by Blabbermouth) Grimmett did not say he had any shot at Judas Priest, just that he applied and they - unlike Maiden - actually got back to him with a form rejection. As for Maiden, he merely recites that their manager told him he was on their short list, which could have just as easily been idle bar talk and doesn't necessarily mean he was close. Nonetheless, as others have mentioned I don't think he'd have been any worse a fit as Blaze Bayley and he definitely had more of a name for himself at the time, so it's not out of the question.
Finally, Sabbath: of all three of the bands, and especially given the time frame Grimmett would have been under consideration, why would anyone doubt that he might have been up for that gig? Gremlin voiced singers were all the rage in metal at one point, and Grimmett was arguably only behind Brian Johnson, Udo and Steve Souza as far as that vocal style went.

chunky. Also after the lionsheart album his voice was not as good and now his voice is shot.
He wouldn't have lasted in any of those bands.
Also with the exception of Priest, you could easily have a range similar to Bruce's, but it's his voice and the fact that he manages to sound so MANLY and DRAMATIC when he sings those higher passages that makes him what he is. Also the fact that he's a good songwriter and a consummate and energetic front man....

"See You In Hell" was so over-hyped back in the day. Everyone owns it cuz it was CHEAP and it had promo in every single store. He's a decent vocalist, Bowcott was a good guitarist. However, the LP is OVER-RATED. Few good tracks, but doesn't compare. It wasn't NWOBHM. Yeah, they were "around" when NWOBHM was happening, but not a frontrunner at all. Grimmett wasn't even their singer!! Angel Witch, Saxon, Tygers of Pan Tang, Raven, Tank, Maiden, Satan, Blitzkrieg, Maiden, etc...those were real NWOBHM. Blaze Bayley was HORRID in Maiden. He made ALL Maiden vocalists better. To say OZZY had no talent is just STUPID. Let's hear YOU sing old SABBATH. I'll check it out. I'm glad Grimmett didn't get in those bands. I still prefer Halford, Ozzy, and Bruce OR Di'anno. You can have Ripper Owens and all the SAB subs. Except DIO. He kicked SAB in the Ass when it was needed. He's always been a great singer. I still prefer OZZY even though he's fucked his mind up horribly about twenty years ago.
