JOE PERRY: STEVEN TYLER Hung Up On Me - Nov. 9, 2009
AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry was interviewed this morning (Monday, November 9) by Chuck Nowlin of Boston's WZLX 100.7 radio station. The chat can now be streamed using the audio player below. A few excerpts from the conversation follow (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On whether Steven Tyler has left AEROSMITH:

Perry: "I don't know. There hasn't been any communication with his managers. He hasn't talked to anybody in the band. So [the report on Classic Rock magazine's web site is] the only thing I've seen or heard.

"Right after the [Abu Dhabi] show [on November 1], I jumped in the car and went to the airport and flew to London for the Classic Rock Awards show. And so we got back a couple of days later than everybody else and when we plugged in and got online and saw [the Classic Rock article], it was kinda... 'OK, well, I guess that's what he's doing.' I knew we were gonna be taking some time off, but I guess he just announced what he was gonna be doing during the time off."

On whether there was any talk with Steven at all during the recent shows in Hawaii and Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates:

Perry: "No. He was off in his own dressing room, he stayed in different hotels from the band, travelled on different planes. We never saw him until we walked on stage on any of those shows."

On Steven telling Classic Rock magazine that he wants to concentrate on "Brand Tyler:"

Perry: "I guess. That's what [the article] says. That's what he's gonna do. I guess. Maybe we'll get a telegram from him; I don't know.

"Like I've been saying since the tour got cancelled, we're gonna be on hiatus. He was like that during the [ill-fated AEROSMITH] tour [with ZZ TOP], too. I mean, he was pretty much travelling on his own, with his own group of people. So there really wasn't much talk about what was going on. And after he fell off the stage the second time [in Sturgis], I don't think he was physically up to finishing the tour — even if he hadn't broken his shoulder. I knew we were gonna be off for a while, so that was it. And I guess he's announced what he's gonna do online.

"I've been pretty verbal about what I'm doing [referring to his recently released solo album. — Ed.]. I've told the [other] guys [in AEROSMITH], I've played them the record — at least gave them the record. I know Brad's [Whitford; guitar] listened to it, I don't know if the other guys have. But I never let it get in the way of [AEROSMITH]. But... that's life."

On whether any of the new AEROSMITH album has been recorded and whether Steven completed any vocals for the new songs before the recent tour:

Perry: "No. The only thing we have is a bunch of stuff that's been left over from past records. Some of those [songs] we were gonna put on the [next] album, but he didn't do any singing at all for this record. I can't really understand that. We had some pretty good stuff laid out, and working with [producer] Brendan O'Brien, I thought it was gonna be a slam dunk, but for some reason, he just wasn't interested."

On having AEROSMITH end this way after being together so long:

Perry: "Well, I don't really think... As long as we're still kicking, it's not over. We'll probably get bored and come back. I don't what everybody's gonna be doing. We've talked about getting someone else to sing in the band, we've talked about just doing... I don't know... whatever."

On whether they have anybody in mind as a replacement for Tyler:

Perry: "Not really. And the thing is, it can't be AEROSMITH with... at least not the AEROSMITH that we know. For it to be valid and have something real about it, it would have to be somebody that would bring something to the party. It would be the four guys that have been playing forever, and using that weapon with somebody that's got [something] to bring in. But I don't know yet. We've really just kind of got knocked back on our heels, and everybody is just kind of settling back and figuring out what's going on."

On whether he or any of the other guys has reached out to Steven:

Perry: "I did call him when we were in Hawaii, because we had some gigs that were offered to us to do in South America — like, three gigs that we were gonna do in December. And I called him up and asked him if he would consider doing them, and he hung up on me about halfway through the conversation, so I kind of got the hint that he pretty much wants to be alone and wants to do his own thing."

Tyler told Classic Rock magazine following the Middle East concert that he intended to work on "Brand Tyler" instead of a new AEROSMITH record for the foreseeable future, saying, "I don't know what I'm doing yet, but it's definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself — Brand Tyler."

Perry told the Las Vegas Sun that he believed Tyler had been planning to leave for a while, saying, "Obviously he hasn't been giving 100 percent to this thing for a long time . . . To disregard his brothers to the point where we have to find out about it on the Internet — it's like, 'See you later, Bud.' I still care for him as a person, or at least the person I used to know. But things change."

I really hope that some chick or his new managment isn't telling Tyler that he's better then the rest of the band, that he should leave, blah blah blah... I'm not sure that I think that Perry is doing a whole lot of good with this whole thing. I know that he's a little irritated with Tyler, but it kinda sound like he's bad mouthing him. Tyler hasn't even technically came out and said that he is leaving, just Perry, so I'm not gunna believe it until it comes out of Tyler's mouth. And didn't Perry do something like this in the 80's?

As a casual Aerosmith fan, this definitely sounds like the end of the band as we know it. The band should continue on, but under a diff name, like one of their song titles. Its also quite a feat that these 2 guys are even still alive after all their 'Toxic Twin' years, to even stayed together for so long. Joe is not saying Steven has left, cause he doesn't know for sure either way. However, the signs have been there that Steven definitely has had enough or just in a totally diff place now.

Oh well, at least we have their albums, and their Greatest Hits album is still a fantastic album.

I've never been a big Aerosmith fan, but I've gained so much respect for Joe Perry during this whole ordeal. Tyler is a douche and the band should carry on without him. Just because one guy can't keep his sh*t together and selfishly wants to do his own thing now shouldn't mean that the other four guys should have to just accept the end of the band.

Oh well, hopefully we'll never have to hear the names Mark Hudson, Desmond Child, or Dianne Warren again....add John Koladner and you have the 4 riders of the ( rock ) apocolypse.

... what will happen is Steven Tyler will come out with an ill advised, poorly conceived pop-crossover album that will tank as it well should, and the rest of the band will more or less be on ice until it all sorts itself out. The proper analogy is not to look within the band's own past but check out what happened to the Rolling Stones when Mick Jagger decided he was going to go solo in the mid-80s. His solo album tanked, and while Keith Richards' solo album from around the same time didn't go platinum or anything it got mad props from the critics, which was more than you can say for Jagger. That was 1985, and literally the very next year the Stones had a new reunion album out. But it sucked - one of their worst ever - so don't expect this next Aerosmith album (which Perry is already pitching as leftovers from the last couple efforts) to be worth a shit, if and when it materializes.

....sounds like a little wuss. Sounds like he lets Tyler treat him like crap, just to have the Aerosmith money rolling....pathetic. Aerosmith has sucked since they go clean and went pop.....don't get me wrong, getting clean is a good thing, but going from "Back In The Saddle" to "Cryin'" is sad.....

There's not going to be an album without Steven Tyler, Perry is just making it sound like "the show must go on" to try to put pressure on Tyler. Same way Jimmy Page tried to guilt trip Robert Plant into a full fledged Led Zep reunion when the obviously had no real intention of going out on the road with the Alter Bridge singer as scab.

As a dedicated Aerosmith fan from the late 80's (I watched the collapse, supported the shaky reunion, and applauded the comeback after the sobriety), I am disgusted with Steven and his blatant disrespect toward his bandmates and brothers in arms. This is basically the same situation of Phullofmyself Anselmo and Pantera - LSD at its finest. Tyler is and always will be a prima donna who thinks the world revolves around him - nothing more, nothing less. Perry needs to keep the other guys together and carry on with a new singer and a new focus - NO MORE AEROSMITH!! As for "Brand Tyler", I will be the first to laugh when it flops....AND IT WILL!!!

a bit of doe and these five guys signed to me.

Let T, do a solo. Unless it's AERO-like, it will probably tank, unless he tries going country or its fully of sappy ballads.

Obviously you can't be 60 and be a wild/bad boy.... but even pretense is necessary sometimes.
At least ye know. put a fullstop or an exclamation mark to your career. Twisted Sister, funked up theirs, they burned out... too bad as they were a s$%t hot band. Now all they do is bust our @#%# with Xmas stuff, just because it sells and it's WEAK. i mean, sure, i don't go out burning churches at xmas - but trust me, this be happy for no reason, atmosphere gets to my #@$@#$# sometimes. I m happy when i m happy and sad when i m sad, and when i m not i m glad !

Anyhow !

Then if this is not all in all a carefully devised plan to create interest....they 'll probably reconsitliate .... after the solos tank and a couple of years have passed.

Gee !

As absurd as it would be for Aerosmith to replace Tyler, maybe it could be cool? I mean if Tyler is really being such a dick and if the other guys still have some drive in them to deliver some actual rock, then why not? The band isn't all about Tyler anyway, they have an absolutely kickass rhythm section and guitar players. Adam Lambert would be a good idea for a new singer.

How do you live 40 years on that damn stage night in and night out, and not know where you are standing bad enough to fall off not once, but twice? I hope he's not getting strung-out again. Sounds like Perry has a good reason to wonder what the hell is going on. Also, Aerosmith flopped when they replaced Joe Perry 30 some years ago. I don't think they will go over well with a new vocalist. All that I really know is that KISS was blowing them off the stage every night that they toured together a few years back. Hey, maybe Tyler didn't fall off after all. Maybe the opening band blew him off that stage.

It's pretty fuckin sad when a Joe Blow bar band like Aerosmitty wins the lottery twice by having 2 careers that throws millions of dollars at them and 60 yr old Steven Tyler can't even be a good little boy and have manners enough to shut up and appreciate that he and those 4 'other' guys don't have it too bad. He must be off the wagon and on the glue. Who is gonna give a turd about him solo? Maybe he should do a duet with Vince Neil!!! Steven is pissed about this Project thing. Perry knows it but he's got a poor memory. Poor communications will kill anything and anyone. Rest in peace Aerosmith

Mick Jagger released 2 solo albums....She's the Boss and Primative Cool between 1985 - 1987.

The Stones released Dirty Work in 1986 around the same time as She's the Boss. They didn't release another album until 1989's Steel Wheels. So there was almost a 4 year period there, not 1 year.
