OPETH: New Video Interview With MIKAEL ÅKERFELDT Posted Online - Nov. 10, 2009
FaceCulture recently conducted an interview with guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH. Watch the chat in five parts below.

OPETH's tour bus was involved in a road crash last month after the driver of the other car made a U-turn in the middle of the highway. According to Åkerfeldt, who was not travelling on the bus at the time of the incident, "it seems as if [the incident] was a deliberate death stunt [on the part of the other car's driver] as the police had found a suicide letter in the car wreck."

OPETH's tour bus was travelling from Dublin, Ireland to Brussels, Belgium when the incident occurred.

Bassist Martin Mendez and keyboardist Per Wiberg were the only two members of OPETH that were present on the bus at the time of the crash.

Åkerfeldt, drummer Martin "Axe" Axenrot and guitarist Fredrik Åkesson had opted to fly home to their families for a few days while the band had three days off before its next concert (October 17 in Brussels as part of the Progressive Nation 2009 tour with DREAM THEATER, BIGELF and UNEXPECT).

None of the OPETH musicians or members of their road crew were injured in the incident.

Their last album was the best since Deliverance. Don't know what you were listening to, but "boring" certainly doesn't describe it.

It was painfully boring. Ghost Reveries annihilates Watershed and Deliverance

Good interview. Always like the candid ones about other things besides the typical Opeth news. Also inspiring to others trying to make it on their own terms - you're gonna go through shit to get to the gold.

Yeah Ghost Reveries is one of their top three best albums. Watershed is decent but the songwriting can't match their best records...more growling vocals are needed, for one. But I'd still love to hear that solo record there, Mike. :-)

It's good to hear interviewers ask different questions every once in a while. Asking "So, your new album has been out for a while now, how's the fan reaction been so far?" in every fucking interview is getting old.

This interviewer always comes up with very candid questions. You can tell Mikael digs him too, because he keeps coming back.

I love Watershed and all, but my favorites would have to be My Arms, Your Hearse, Damnation, Deliverance, and of course Ghost Reveries, and I might have to say GH is my favorite, one reason is because they still had Lopez on it.

Opeth used to be something sacred, and different. I suppose it's inevitable that a band evolves and gains a large fan base when talent is quite obviously there, but I am so sick of all the headlines and articles on this band. Please, Mikael, take a much needed break, and write us an amazing album (ie Stillife, Blackwater Park, Orchid).

This band has been busting it's ass year in, year out, for 10 years now. They need a rest. Perhaps if that happens, Peter will be rested too, and come back. The only album without him was, and I choose my words carefully, very uninspired. Perhaps their worst, but compared to many other acts, still brilliant in it's own light.

Okay, you all can start insulting me for knocking "Watershed" now. Most Blabbermouth users are 19 and under, so I'm sure you thought I was talking about a flower when I said "Orchid" above anyway.
