SATYRICON: New Video Interview With FROST Available - Nov. 10, 2009
HardTimes.ca conducted an interview with drummer Kjetil-Vidar "Frost" Haraldstad of Norwegian black metallers SATYRICON before the band's October 27, 2009 performance at Club Soda in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Watch the chat below.

SATYRICON vocalist Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven told Terrorizer.com that the band's upcoming concert in London, England (on December 20) will mark the beginning of a new phase in the group's evolution. "From then on, there are going to be a lot of changes in the SATYRICON camp," he said. "After we take a long touring break and come back a couple of years later, certain people may not be with us any longer. Although we won't be doing anything overly dramatic, we'll be trying quite a few different things, which I think is going to be really good for SATYRICON. The reason we're doing that is so we can continue to develop our sound. At the moment we are still enjoying what we do, but if that continues any longer it'll undoubtedly stagnate, so we need to ensure that doesn't happen. And moving in different musical directions is definitely a good way to go about it."

"As an artist, there are so many new things I'd like to do," Satyr added. "And one of them is to work on some songwriting for SATYRICON, though from an entirely different angle. For example, we may chose to go for a similar tone, but use a different set of instruments in the next record. Maybe there are also other recording techniques, which could add a different element to our work and open up fresh musical territory. Our last three releases all follow a certain style and pattern, and we want to create a record that's radically different from the others. Though the foundation of SATYRICON's sound — my songwriting and Frost's signature drumming — will always remain unchanged."

...or are Norwegians incapable of laughter, satire or just behaving a bit jovial?

From memory, the only Norwegian band members that I've seen with some kind of song to their voice and a skip to their step, is Jan Blomberg and that singer from Immortal, who, when he paints his face, resembles "Chaz", my mum's Bernese mountain dog.

Remember that non-english speaking people has to 'think' of what they say when they speak with english speaking people. This take away some of the 'natural' feel of course. Doing an interview shouldn't automaticly mean making jokes and being funny.
Frost does interview the way they should be done for Black Metal.

Also..

Can't interviewers find a quiet place to conduct an interview? They know doing this when there's a soundcheck in the background will only annoy the people watching the footage later. It seems to annoy Frost as well in the begining.

Good interview. Guy didn't waste time on filler junk and seemed to really want to get to know frost/satyr.

...is a change for the better. Let's face it, they've become a heavy rock band, even though I do own Volcano and The Age Of Nero (the latter is actually one of my favorite releases over the last year. True, Satyr has never abandoned the harsh vocal approach, and Frost still bummells the double bass drums like a fucking machine, but it's just become more of a heavy rock music as opposed the black metal.

What I'm getting at is this, they've been changing and evolving since 1999. This is not a new concept, so with that in mind (lest we forget the bore of an album called Diabolical, Now), let's hope that we get something a little less experimental, and a little more in tune with their roots. Please......

Great interview. It's so rare to see musicians interviewed by deep people with interesting questions. Usually its the stereotypical stock interview questions with awkward moments but this one was really inspiring and interesting.

I'm excited to hear Satyr talking about changing the musical direction. I remember when they released Rebel Extravaganza, it was so fucking amazing. I hope after these 3 last , Satyricon will release a revolutionary and mind blowing album like that.
