MERCENARY Parts Ways With Drummer, Singer And Keyboardist - Nov. 11, 2009
Guitarist Jakob Mølbjerg of Danish metallers MERCENARY has issued the following update:

"Well, well, changes that have been underway for a long time can sometimes come about in the blink of an eye.

"Last week, Mike [Park Nielsen, drums] told us that he wanted to leave the band permanently. The rest of us did some serious thinking and soul-searching, sat down and had 'the big talk' and came to the agreement that the only way to continue the band was to part ways with Mikkel [Sandager, vocals] and Morten [Sandager, keyboards] as well.

"During the last year we have been working on a new album and it has become clear that we no longer share the same vision and enthusiasm about the direction and the future of the band. Martin [Buus, lead guitar], René [Pedersen, bass/vocals], Mike and I wanted to play faster, heavier and more modern (yet old school) material, but for the band as a whole this evidently didn't work out.

"In many ways this is a painful choice. But it also allows us to close a chapter in the band's career and our shared lives, that we're all immensely proud off, in a dignified way that doesn't let ourselves or our fans down. Nobody would be better off if we released an album that we didn't all truly believe in and felt as fiercely passionate about as we have done about all of our past albums.

"Rest assured, however, that René, Martin and I will continue MERCENARY in the best way we possibly can and with a newfound sense of integrity and purpose. So far we have had an immensely fruitful songwriting process with lots of mutual inspiration, understanding, synergy — and most importantly — good, plain, old-fashioned fun, which is what it all ought to be about. We feel that we’re finally all in agreement about the future direction of the band and that this will be the strongest and most united incarnation of MERCENARY ever. In terms of creativity, motivation and the everyday-practical-getting-shit-done-aspects, the band remains fully intact. The new MERCENARY will be back to shatter everybody's balls in 2010.

"On behalf of all of the guys, we'd like to give our most humble and sincere thanks to all the fans, bands, press, promoters and others who have supported us throughout the years and made this one hell of a damn fine ride. As a final nod from the old incarnation of MERCENARY to the fans, we've included a video [see below] from our tour with ARCH ENEMY, where Mikkel joined them on stage in Italy for the track 'Burning Angel' as this tour and this experience was in many ways the highlight of what we managed to achieve together."

MERCENARY's latest album, "Architect of Lies", was released last year through Century Media Records. Featuring artwork by Niklas Sundin (ARCH ENEMY, DARK TRANQUILLITY), "Architect of Lies" was made available as a regular CD and a special limited-edition version featuring the bonus track "Death Connection" and a bonus DVD containing live footage filmed at Bang Your Head!!! festival 2007 and Summer Nights festival 2007, a detailed studio report and the promo video for "My World Is Ending".

Wow, that sucks. They're losing some major parts of the band.

Mikkel's vocals will be missed.

I guess they were getting to prog metal for the other members.

haha, just thought that was hilarious.

I for one am looking forward to a good old fashioned ball shattering.

I think my favorite parts of Mercenary were the vocals, the drums, and the keyboard. First 2 albums were amazing, the last was meh, I think I'll follow where these 3 go instead.

I am with you Artex. These guys were the main part of the sound. I think I will follow their project if they decide to do one. It's a shame all of those songs will kinda go to waste now. They had some really good ones.

From the looks of their website:

Mike Park has already joined a new band.
Mikkel is working on a new project.
Morten is in a band called Pretty Maids.

So sadly, from the looks of it, the 3 leaving aren't joining forces.

I gotta agree, they were so important to the bands sound, it sucks they're leaving. Morten was a great keyboardist, Mike Park was a fantastic drummer, and Mikkel's vocals were insane.

...However Jakob and Martin are no slouches when it comes to riffs and solos. They definitely kick major ass in that category.

Definitely one of my absolute favorite bands . . . always thought they blended the brutal and the melodic perfectly. Mikkel's vocals were absolutely stellar . . . I'm still not a huge fan of full on harsh/death vocals but this band, they way they blended and layered them---and seemed to very thoughtfully pick the songs and spots to use them---was what got me over the hump and helped me develop an appreciation for them when done right.

Interesting, reading between the lines it seems like the remaining members want to do something that is more uniformly harsh and heavier and drop some of the more melodic and classic metal elements . . . and I'm guessing the departing members want to continue the direction of last few albums. The departing members certainly have the basis to start their own band and do that. It's unfortunate too, beause the guitar work and solos are equally stellar . . . the solos on Isolation and Public Enemy Number One on AOL in particular are fantastic, remind me of Randy Rhoads in that they are technically impressive but so "musical" as well. These guys were just a great combination all the way around.

Was hoping to get to see them (this version) live someday, guess that's not going to happen. Will be interesting to see what the remaining members do for a vocalist and vocal style. Well, they are all excellent musicians, so best of luck to both camps. This version of Mercenary will be missed!

this sucks. I wonder why Mike left, considering according to the statement, he was in agreement on the direction of the band? His drum parts are some of the best around, and I wonder if they can be replaced. I think they can probably find a new vocalist and definitely a keyboardist though. Although, I really liked Mikkel's vocals, so hopefully they can find someone at least as good, though I'm sure that will be hard. Just please don't get one of those typical screechy power metal types. Mikkel could go real high, but he brought a certain diversity to his clean parts as well as the ability to do some growls. Please don't throw up some Ripper Owens power metal screecher and ruin everything. Just my thoughts. One of my favorite bands, so looking forward to seeing what the new stuff sounds like.

totally agree w VerbalKint. the band started to die the day Kral left and they brought in Rene the wrestler. The results are now in clear sight... Let the band rest (name change anyone?) and let's watch out for the brothers' new projects.
