OPETH Frontman: 'I Felt Like A Fatter, Uglier And Less Talented MARIAH CAREY' - Nov. 11, 2009
Guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH has issued the following update:

"I just got back home from Tel Aviv, Israel where we had an amazing show! Loved it! We played a bit funky (not as in swinging, more as in a bit 'shit'), but it was alright. Crowd was AWESOME! Loud, big and steaming HOT!

"On top of things, downing a few cold beers on the beach around midnight in 22 degrees celcius is NOT bad, when it's November, and you're...Swedish.

"Yuri (promoter) took great care of us. I even had red roses in my room and a little plate of fruit plus two showers. It was extravagant. I felt like a fatter, uglier and less talented Mariah Carey.

"Anyways, we also just recently finished the Progressive Nation Euro tour with our buddies DREAM THEATER, BIGELF and UNEXPECT. It was a great nice tour and we had many good shows. I can't say which one was the best, but it was certainly amazing to play Hovet in our hometown [Stockholm]. It's where we all used to go and see metal shows in the '80s. Love that place, but I admit, when we're up there, I was feeling like.... 'OK, whatever.' It was like any stage, really. Wembley arena was cool too. Spektrum in Oslo, that place in Rome. Ahoy in Rotterdam....several kick-ass venues and several kickass crowds.

"I was struggling in the beginning to get past the few yawning DREAM THEATER front row fans who didn't give a fuck about us. But with time I managed to shake it off and deliver pretty much every night. We did well, I think. We recorded all the shows and listened back to them afterwards. We're at a level now where the difference between what we feel is a 'killer' show and a 'bad' show is almost not hearable. Yes, I'm boasting, but fuck man, we're quite consistent now, I think.

"Nice to finally hook up with BIGELF. I feel they're my boys now, brothers. Damon, Ace, Duffy and Froth! Amazing people, amazing band! Hope we can do something together again! Loved them since the first EP.

"UNEXPECT were a lovely bunch of people too and we hung out with them almost every night, for a beer or two. Great people and fucking intense band, I have to say.

"And DREAM THEATER, of course. [Mike] Portnoy [DREAM THEATER drummer] is now a buddy of mine, I have to say. I love the guy. He's got a finger in every fucking pie and his brain must be overheating on a daily basis. That's a man who's got a big heart and a overwhelming interest in music. Just made everyone feel comfortable. He even saved five copies of the Swedish show poster for us since we 'might want to save it.' Sweet! BUT I have to take credit for kicking his ass in rock trivia. Yet, I was shitfaced, so he might not share my opinion.

"The other guys [from DREAM THEATER] are cool too, of course. Spoke more to [John] Myung [DREAM THEATER bassist] than before and he proves to be supercool. [John] Petrucci was fucking nice, too, as always. He jammed with Fredrik [Åkesson, OPETH guitarist], but you know... two widdy woo freaks showing some scales and practise runs does little to grasp my attention. He asked me to show some licks and I said 'Don't know any!' Haha! He's a cool cat though!

"All in all, it was a great tour! Obviously we had the whole shit with the crash but we're over it by now. Other than that it was all hunky dory!

"Food was great, too. We had a catering service travelling with us and they're feeding us three times a day. Gave them a bottle of wine afterwards to say cheerio!

"Back home again for three days or so, then it's Japan and Oz! Can't wait. Well, to be honest, I fucking HATE those flights....but the shows will be fun. And I'll go record shopping in Shinjuku, for sure!

"Wife and kids are good, even though Melinda [daughter] recently had a high fever and Mirjam [other daughter] vomited for a whole day. They're good now though.

"Well, that's it! 'Efterlyst' is on the telly now so I gotta go watch some criminals in action."

Saw them with Opeth and DT in Rotterdam. Somehow Bigelf manages to include Floyd, Purple, Sabbath and Zep influences all in one song....

Gotta say that Mariah is crazy talented, she can definitely sing with the best of them....but that certainly does not mean this guy is not amazing in other ways. This entire band is amazing, from lyrics to musicianship they are one of the best. I look forward to every release, as with this band, you never know what you are going to get.

Bigelf are one of the best bands out there. Incredible sound and talent. Kinda like The Beatles meet Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, or something. Crazy! And Åkerfeldt is a real class act. He's a good guy and a very, very talented genius.

Opinion? I guess you consider "Good for them" an opinion ;)

The dude is a complete waste of oxygen as we all know.

And I agree with Mikael about Dream Theater, I have met them a few times and they were always very cool. Petrucci is a straight up sick guitar player.

Mariah Carey is talented - on a technical level - but it's a damn shame she happens to use her powers for evil. Still, she's finger-bangable after all these years and that's what matters.

but her voice isn't what it used to be. not that i'm a huge fan, but you can hear the producers trying to cover up all the cracks in her voice. Must be the crazy lifestyle!!!

I'd much rather listen to Opeth than Carey though, obviously, but truth be told, if given a choice, i'd choose the ringing in my ears over both.

opeth = 10 min long stretches of same ole same boredom. Album after album of the same thing . . . hard verse, chorus, TYPICAL acoustical interlude, back to hard . . . blah blah blah for 8 more long minutes. Same every time.

I just don't get it.

I guess that's why all of you do. Boring music for boring people.

I guess that's just my opinion, but then my opinion is the only one that matters, after all. Eat shit.

"Boring music for boring people."

Damned straight. Opeth is snoretastically pretentious and pseudo-progressive drivel... and Akerfeldt, despite his rather forced humility here, is an arrogant arsehole who thinks he's God's gift to music.

But... in this instance, his powers of perception are spot on.

Some of you people need your music spoon-fed to you. It's great that you have an opinion, but let's not point fingers in people's facing and tell them if they listen to Opeth that they are boring. Please. I've been a metalhead since grade school in the fucking 80s when everything exploded. I know what music invokes passion in me. Opeth is definitely one of those bands. There is no other band like Opeth and if there is, I haven't heard them. I commend Mikael for doing the music that moves him.

Bloodbath is fucking great as well. You douchebags.

They are used to 2 to 3 minute pop songs. And not all of Opeths songs are 8+ minutes! What retards to say such a thing.

Oh and I'd be one of those yawning Opeth fans while watching Dream Theater perform. I mean, even Dream Theater get bored of their own complex material to where they end up dong full Metallica and Iron Maiden cover sets! :-D haha
