DREAM THEATER Scraps Plans For U.S. Tour, Announces 'God Of War 3' Participation - Nov. 12, 2009
DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy has issued the following update:

"As 2009 is finally winding down and no DREAM THEATER plans have been made public yet for 2010, I'd like to just give a quick rundown of what we have planned to prevent any rumors or speculation that I'm starting to see brew....

"As you know, after Thanksgiving we will be heading down to New Zealand for the very first time and then over to Australia (with special guests PAIN OF SALVATION), and then we will return home to our families for the holidays and New Year...

"In an unexpected move, we will then enter the studio right after New Year's to write and record a brand new instrumental track for inclusion on the upcoming 'God Of War 3' soundtrack. This will mark the first time in the band's career we have written and recorded an exclusive track for an outside project. Roadrunner invited us to participate and we decided we were up for the challenge!

"Next on the agenda will likely be a South American tour in the late winter / early spring...but we are still awaiting details on this, so, of course, plans are still subject to change...

"Speaking of changed plans, I'm afraid I have some disappointing news for our North American fans: after serious discussion within the band and evaluations with our manager and agent, we have deciding against doing another U.S. run in spring as we had initially planned. For many reasons, it just is not going to work out as we had originally hoped. (and yes Texas, I still remember we owe ya next time!)

"Essentially, this means the 'Black Clouds & Silver Linings World Tour' will conclude with South America (if it indeed happens) and the only remaining DREAM THEATER shows in 2010 will be some possible festivals and one-off shows that may (or may not) happen towards the end of the summer.

"So that's the 2010 forecast for DREAM THEATER....

"The 2010 Mike Portnoy forecast is another story....

"Although I do plan on having some down time to enjoy with my family....I do have several things on my agenda that will keep me plenty busy (of course!)...

"As most of you know, it's looking VERY likely that TRANSATLANTIC [the progressive rock supergroup featuring Portnoy, MARILLION's Pete Trewavas, THE FLOWER KINGS' Roine Stolt and Neal Morse [ex-SPOCK'S BEARD]) will hit the road with some shows in support of the newly released reunion album 'The Whirlwind'. It looks like we found a nice little window in mine, Pete's, Neal's and Roine's schedules to make this happen in the spring. So we are currently looking into doing some select shows in major cities on both sides of the Atlantic during this period (it will be our first truly 'transatlantic' tour — as we only did the U.S. for 'SMPT:e' in 2000 and only did Europe/U.K. for 'Bridge Across Forever' in 2001). Details of these shows should start to firm up soon, so stay tuned.

"In addition to the TRANSATLANTIC tour, I also have several other exciting possibilities up my sleeve for 2010, so time will tell what pans out and become realities....

"So there ya have it for now!

"Inevitably, some people will be disappointed in our plans and complain (and blame me!). Others will be excited and overjoyed (and thank me)... but it is what it is. It's our lives and our career and this is how it looks to be shaping up for the coming months/year."

They are one of the few big metalbands that make an album every 2 year and tour, i can imagine that they want to take some time off after a while.

God Of War 3 + DT = WIN!
I'm looking forward to that game

reason and they'll never admit it is that there is no $$$ to be made in the US, they will play to half empty theaters just because people have ran out of money, Before you bitch... this has nothing to do with Dream Theaters ability to sell tickets in normal situations, but I would wager that the market for them is very small and to drag a band like them around the US in a financial climate such as this.. would be a loss. I would even go as far to say that alot of the death metal bands and other rock bands that go out in US barley make any money as it sits.... No wonder there are always European tours almost all the time before a USA tour, cause of $$$$ thats why, I bet most bands when they go over there make 3 to 5 times the amount of $$$ compared to touring over here. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Boooooo, no US Tour in the Spring. Each year, Cleveland and/or Pittsburgh gets DT in some capacity, but the last time they came around either city was the PN tour in '08. PN '09 didn't come anywhere near us, and I was hoping that it would be made up for by a DT tour in the Spring. The reason it's important to see DT when you can is b/c their set list is extremely fluid...who knows if they'll ever want to play "The Count of Tuscany" in full again, or at least anytime soon? I missed them on the Octavarium tour proper (after Gigantour '05), and that might well have been the only time for the foreseeable future they'll have played the title track in full. Bummer for no US tour. :(

This is very disappointing news not only for Texas fans, but for Arizona as well. Phoenix is a metal/rock town, the 5th largest metro area in the country and they haven't come here since 2007!!! Now it looks like no Dream Theater for Arizona until 2011 at the earliest...

This will be the first tour since Images & Words that DT have not come to Phoenix, suffice to say my friends and I here are very disappointed by this news. They always do very well here and sell many tickets, and have great attendance.

Well, hey look if DT never come back to Arizona again, I've had a great 16 years of seeing this band live and if this is where it ends - so be it. I refuse to travel to see bands - there is no excuse not to play Phoenix for any band.

Mike, etc thanks for 16 great years of live playing in Arizona. We'll miss you, but there are plenty of other bands that play here every tour (cough, RUSH, cough).

I think they should take a break, regroup, and write something worthwhile. I liked BC&SL, but it almost seemed desperate in parts,
thay are losing the cohesive sound. its just wankery and thoughtless lyrics. I love them, but they need a break. kind of like Pain of Salvation took. the new POS EP is the shizznit. so is the new Freak Kitchen. suck it

Wow mike that's quite a long and thought out bullshit story you have just handed us. If you read between the lines you will find the real reason they are not touring the u.s. again. The bottom line is you put out an album that sucks and you picked some shit bands to open for you and that = half empty venues. I was at the greek theater show in LA and it was half full. Until you give up your control over the band, some tough times are ahead my friend.

Hate to admit it, but you make some good points. I think the new album has some absolutely amazing songs and some mediocre ones (like the last album). And you're onto something regarding the last tour(s) -- everybody keeps blowing smoke up Mike's ass about how great the whole Prog Nation idea is. I'm sorry, but it sucks. DT fans want to see 2 hours + of DT, not Dweezil Zappa cashing in on his dad's legacy, and then 6 DT songs. I remember years ago hearing the local concert promoter in Hartford talking about Dream Theater fans (before I was even a fan) and why he didn't bring Gigantour to the area -- DT fans are a ravenous bunch who ONLY want to see DT, and as much as possible. Package tours will not be successful for DT. We've all got OCD and an 1:20 set doesn't make us leave happy.
The venues were half-empty on this PN tour vs the last one because people weren't happy with what they got for their money the last time, and didn't want to do it again. Sorry Mike, but it's true. Take it as a compliment of our appreciation and obsession with your music. Please stop trying to be the godfather of prog and ram other bands down our throats that we don't want to hear.

I'm not as big of a fan these days. They don't tour the U.S. ?? And when they do, they don't do many shows in the south.

Really, I'm done.

No US Tour? Fuck! I haven't seen them since their TOT tour, which kicked ass I must say. Sounds like a new live DVD would be in the works. Assuming because that seems to be the trend for them. Album-Tour-DVD-break-Album... Still my favorite band though.

You guys are right. Though it's cool to hear new bands and it's probably fun to tour with other guys; the DT fans want to see 3 hours of DT! Esp. those of us with families with kids who don't get to concerts much anymore.

New Zealand and Australia will probably sell out a fucking stadium for these guys. Bottom line- they want to sell out venues and they ain't doin' it. Their next album probably has to make God piss his pants to win some fans back. I'm looking forward to it.

It was a bust this year if you ask me. Of course the fact that they played 4 shows in the tri-state area probably had something to do with it. Their tour schedule is overkill. 4 shows in a matter of a 100mile span and they complain that the shows aren't packed? Hello- Recession calling Mike.. this is your reality check. Also while DT is playing how about having James actually stay on stage for more than 4 minutes at a time. I know he's the singer & all but seriously- is there a reason that everytime his parts are over he leaves the stage?

At one point, DT was my favorite band. Not so the past few years.

To bad about the tour, but as everyone has been saying, this band needs a break. Octavarium was the last CD I thoroughly enjoyed. They've been going nonstop. The creative explosion that happened around LTE/SFAM has died down big time. Are they still writing in the studio? If so, instead of going into the studio with nothing and writing everything there, do some writing and pre-production. Go into the studio with something concrete and then refine and improve it. The improv technique worked ten years ago, but its time that they spent more time on their music before finalizing it. It sounds so fucking routine and rather uninspired nowadays.

As for the side projects, I'm interested.

i'VE READ that you thought the new KISS was the best LP of the year. I almost choked, because the DT is a real classic heavy album with a real heavy metal drummer and unquestionably one of metal's best guitar. So, which is it or none for best album of the year? Best release of 2009 (off year comp. to '08 w/ Metallica/Ac/Dc/MetalChurch/Blaze/Crue/Journey/TestAment and more). My guess is DT - it's a fkn great LP and should be respected as such. These guys are in top form, like 'em or not!!!!

I think ToThought was their best tour as well and what a DVD that is from '04. Systematic Chaos the DVD version (MVI 5.1) is bar none the best you can get; awesome graphics on the book/TV while songs are playin' and unlike the RUSH MVI for S&A - there's a different picture / graphic for each song, just like in the songbook w/ easy navigation. I hope more bands will release MVI's of DVD-Audio's in 5.1. KILLER.!!!!!!!
(not a shaving ad there). peace.

happened when DT and Queensryche toured together with Fates Warning as the opener. I haven't been to any of the Prog Nation shows but I'll assume the attendance was better last tour when Opeth was part of the bill. Who knows, maybe they need to have only 2 openers instead of 3? Maybe they need to carefully choose their opening acts instead of going by one band members personal favorites? It seems to me that the guys in DT for the most part are humble guys and believe that they were partly lucky to achieve their success and perhaps owe something for this, hence Prog Nation? The truth is they were successful because they played their cards right and mostly because they wrote some killer albums years ago.

Damn you guys, you don't read and you talk about nothing of what the subject it about.

THEY MADE NO MONEY IN THE USA!!! and they can't do small venues anymore because the production of the live show is bigger now. Scaling it back may look like failure in some people's eyes

The new CD is not what the true fans who have been around since WDADU came out want to hear. When you favorite band gets older, the music should mature as well. MP thinks the MUSIC matters and not the SONG. They HAVEN'T used a real producer(Peter Collins ONLY engineered BCSL. He didn't PRODUCE. By the way, Collins is man behind Queensryche's Mindcrime I) because of greed. A producer can make a band grow but JP/MP can't think THEIR ideas are the BEST and everyone else should shut up. All the albums have been stale since SFAM

The fans are tired of the JP/MP show. Jordan made SFAM really come to life for being the first self produced effot but when you put him on the back burner, you get the same boring/self produced record for the last 10 yrs. Don't get me wrong, there are some great highlights on every record but it doesn't compare to the records before the JP/MP show came about.

Change the formula DT. Like one guy posted, DO PRE-PRODUCTION!! Get Peter Collins to produce or any other person who can add input that can make the SONGS matter.

Metallica did it and made them billionaire but they losted heart which they are trying to get back.

DT doesn't need that, they need to have a open mind again.

Tho, it's on the SCORE 20TH ANNIVERSARY DVD, in it's entirety, maybe that's why I sold it. Still, Ughhh. How many times have I sold LP.s just to buy them back again later????????????

Hetfield is right, it's a 'FAST FOOD' life-style for most Americans, today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
