ALICE COOPER To Create New Character For Upcoming Album - Nov. 13, 2009
The Quietus recently conducted an interview with legendary rocker Alice Cooper. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Quietus: For a period of time you drank heavily. Would it be fair to assume that the character of Alice Cooper swallowed you up?

Cooper: I was probably the most efficient alcoholic around — I never missed a show, I never slurred a word. When I was doing acting, I never missed my lines. And then I started realising why that was — when I went to the hospital the doctor would sit there and question me about my drinking and he would ask, "How much did you drink on stage?" and I'd go, "I don't drink on stage." And he said, "What?" I went "When I'm working I never drink." "So when you're up there for a few hours you never drink?" I said "No." "With your acting do you drink when you're on film?" I said "No." So he said, "Alice isn't the alcoholic, you are. You're blaming everything on Alice and Alice doesn't even drink." I had to sit there for a minute and go, "You're absolutely right." When I was actually working, I never did drink. So it's really funny that I pushed the blame on Alice Cooper when Alice wasn't the problem at all. I was the problem.

The Quietus: Why did the original Alice Cooper band break up in the mid-'70s? After all, you were on a high, popularity-wise.

Cooper: The reason why we broke up was because I wanted to keep doing theatrics and they wanted to take all that down and not really work on theatrics anymore. They just wanted to be a band. I said, "People are eating out of our hands just now, we won that war. The war that we couldn't win we won and now you wanna go back?!" I said, "I want a ticket now to a place that nobody's ever seen before." I was already thinking of "Welcome To My Nightmare" and they were going, "Nah, we wanna go back in the other direction." That was really the reason the band broke up. But we never broke up with any sort of negative feelings. There was never a time when Dennis, Neil and I were yelling at each other.

The Quietus: Please tell me about your new album that's due to come out in 2010. What can we expect?

Cooper: I'm not gonna be very specific with you but I'm gonna say this — I'm creating this new character that Alice will be playing. Also a villain. At the same time it's going to be a character that's going to allow Alice to stretch out musically a little bit more. He's a bit of a phantom but what he does allows the music to do a lot of things. It'll be pretty interesting.

"Along came a spider" was awesome. Starting with the idea, the music, and finishing with booklet design.
Then he gave classic rockin' "Keeping halloween alive" and this one was perfect too.
Waiting for new album. Keep it going!

My wife and I sat 1st row in Dallas recently when Coop came to town. It was phenomenal....he still puts on a great show - at 61! It was waaaay cool when he sang the 2nd verse of Poison to my wife. And they totally ripped "Wicked Young Man" from my fave Cooper CD "Brutal Planet".......also, Dirty Diamonds was awesome.

I loved Along Came A Spider, but the production was down a bit from Dirty Diamonds, Brutal Planet and Dragontown.

Can't wait for the next CD.

Seems like Alice didn't really push Along came a Spider much. He only played one song from it live and didn't use the album name on the tour. Too bad as it was a great record.......

Have to disagree with you folks who are touting ACAS. I found it really disappointing. The idea was cool; the lyrics were pretty good; the package was excellent, creepy Alice stuff. The music, however, just didn't grab me. There seemed to be very little in the way of catchy stuff... and I've always loved the fact that Alice's music can be heavy/hard-edged but also really, really memorable and hook-filled. After a good attempt to get into the album, I just put it on the shelf--and returned to stuff like DIRTY DIAMONDS, EYES..., and even some of those spotty, quirky early '80s records.

That said, I agree that Alice can do (almost) no wrong. What a great performer... and because so much of his stuff is great, I'll eagerly await his new record and this new character.

If you've never seen Alice live, go! Have no concerns about his age or the fact that "he's past his prime." The man delivers, and lots of younger bands could stand to learn from a performer with his presence.

But spider is still better than 75% of whats coming out now. And for a performer with 40 years under his belt.....that isn't bad. Now everyone go put on your vinyl copy of DADA or ZIPPER. Then after a few more ....break out the great KILLER and BILLION DOLLAR BABIES. There is a reason he's still here.

Along Came a Spider was a pretty good concept, great artwork, good lyrics, but the music just wasn't as catchy or classic Alice sounding as others.

I'm a loooong time Alice Cooper fan, and I really liked The Eyes of Alice Cooper. I'm looking forward to the new one!

What a coincidence I just happen to be playing "Once Upon A Spider" as I type.

(Yes, you all needed to know this. This is as close to Tweeting (I think that's what it's called) as I'm gonna get.)

I think he did a good job of making a concept album with Spider .... so many concept albums fail. But I still prefer to crank Dirty Diamond and Eyes of Alice when it's party time ... those are both rockin albums.
Alice always delivers live. I caught his cane last year and he signed it for me after the show !

Special Forces, Zipper Catches Skin, and DaDa ( IMO ) are as good as B$B, School's Out, or Killer.

I was lucky enough to see Alice on the Special Forces tour. It was weird not seeing the "killer" Alice, but a very cool show. Of the many times I've seen him, that 1982 show ranks among my favourites.

COMMENT | He played 2 songs live

Javelin, it doesn't make a big difference, but Alice did actually play 2 songs live from ACAS. It's only been "Vengeance" on the Theatre of Death tour, but after the album came out, he was playing both "Vengeance" and "Femenine Side" as he finished the Psycho Drama tour. "Feminine Side" was great live, and so is "Vengeance."
