ZAKK WYLDE Recording Cover Of PANTERA's 'Suicide Note' For Upcoming DIMEBAG Tribute - Nov. 13, 2009
Zakk Wylde is recording a version of PANTERA's "Suicide Note Pt. 1" for the forthcoming "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) tribute album. The collection, which is being put together by U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine for a special issue that will coincide with the five-year anniversary of Dimebag's passing, is expected to include the following cuts, among others:

* MACHINE HEAD - "Fucking Hostile"
* CHIMAIRA - "Slaughtered"
* EVILE - "Cemetery Gates"
* THROWDOWN - [to be announced]
* ZAKK WYLDE - "Suicide Note Pt. 1"

Fans of Dimebag are in an uproar over the resurfacing of a 2005 painting called "The Assassination Of Dimebag Darrell". Done by New York-based artist Tom Sanford, the picture is a graphic depiction of the fatal onstage shooting of Abbott in December 2004 by Nathan Gale at a Columbus, Ohio rock club. The controversy over the painting has erupted again now that the picture is set to be auctioned off on November 21 by the London-based Phillips de Pury & Company.

Sanford has done other paintings chronicling violence in the lives of musicians, including one of a stabbing incident at the 2004 Vibe Awards and another showing rapper 50 Cent in an altercation involving a knife.

In a lengthy statement posted at his web site, Sanford wrote: "The painting is certainly in poor taste, but I think that when one is describing a mass murder, etiquette is really not an issue. Poor taste is pretty much the baseline criteria for my work, so fundamental to my project that I really do not consider it when I make a painting. I have no interest in being in good taste. My work is always subjective, inaccurate and incorrect, and I stand behind this position."

Suicide Note is great tune, vastly underrated. One of Phil's most honest performances. Zakk will never be able to reach that but more power to him.

Totally agree. It is a damn shame what happened to Darrell. But the bottom line is that he just wasn't THAT friggin great. He was a great guitar player for his band, but certainly doesn't stand out among the true greats. Christ sakes, they're making more cash off this dude than Hendrix since he died.

I heard on Mtv or vh1 that Philip wished someone would do something bad or get him back for something, and you know there's plenty of brainwashed idiots out there. Vinnie Paul was saying that he thought (as I vaguely remember) Phil got what he wanted. Right/Wrong I don't know but it pisses me off. I used to love them and listen to them all the time/ had all their lp.s etc. I hope I can get this fact discredited so I can go back to listening to the 1 CDR I have of 18 or so PANTERA songs. And wear my slick BLACK PANTHER PANTERA SHIRT again. anyone in the know about this?

Zakk should get Metallica to cover a song - Dime and Phil were big fans of Metallica (their early stuff, especially), and I am sure that Metallica would like to honour the memory of Dime...

I wonder what song would fit Hetfield's vocals the best?

you would think bands out there would cover Pantera songs that havent already been covered a million times before. But then again MH and Evile have never been known to be original musicians. Here to hoping for some deeper cuts being covered like maybe Shedding Skin, 10s, or, if a band with an actual singer has the balls, something off of CFH like Medicine Man.

But im sure we will get the usual songs we have all heard millions of times like Walk, CFH, 5 minutes alone, aka all the safe covers. Come on guys grow some balls!

I know this is purely subjective, but I can personally respect this sort of tribute that Metal Hammer is putting together - even if it's being used, more than anything, to sell their commodity more effectively.

As for bands, I'd like to see more personal friends of Dime submit more stuff - like Slayer and Crowbar. I bet Kirk Windstein can actually handle some of Dimebag's solos.

Dime was definitely an excellent, original guitarist. All that being said, Dimebag, like just about every dead musician, has become vastly overrated because of the tragedy. If he were still alive and assuming Pantera wouldnt have reunited, he would be making mediocre Damageplan cds. Sort of like how Vinnie Paul is making awful music now with Hell Yeah. also its fucking ridiculous how much money has been made, and will continue to be made off of his name. Its almost as bad as all the Michael Jackson bullshit that we have all had to endure.

But I guess if people are willing to fork over their hard-earned money to buy cheap copies of formerly great songs, more power to them. Too bad all the money in the world wont bring Dime back.

Thrashtastic is right, he just did not express himself well, a tad fucking hostile but that's cool. I get the whole respect for Dimebag thing (frankly i think it might be more respectful to call him by his REAL name, not some nickname all the time) but Pantera is such a legendary band that hearing other bands and musical styles cover them is awesome, however it might be nice to take proceeds from anything with the "Dimebag" name on it and donate the majority to charity. That said, unless i am not reading right, they are saying that this is going to be released with a special issue of the magazine. So, but the magazine, get the album? There is no mention of the profits on this, but it does seem like bad taste to not address that. If it's a money grab, then they all suck.

I am excited to hear this song, but why would they include Throwdown, they are horrible. Not a talented musician in the group. I saw them live and was not impressed. They played a Pantera song (up until the solo, of course....which they then jumped into one of their crappy songs) I am pretty sure it was Walk or maybe A New Level, it was several years ago, so you'll have to forgive me. In any case, Zakk's is the only song I will listen to so far.

I live in Dallas, and any time I go to a show I see tons people wearing Dimebag shirts and other stuff. While I understand and respect their right to show some respect to Dime, it does indeed get old. No disrespect to his memory intended, but if I see one more lame-ass local band say "this song is for Dime" and slam a Black Tooth Grin on the stage, I'll strangle them with my bare hands. And living here, I've seen more Dime tributes than any metal fan should be subjected to, and you just KNOW that not all of them are for charity. Some unscrupulous snake is making money off his memory, and I'm not talking about Dime's estate either.

MEMO TO LOCAL DALLAS / FORT WORTH BANDS THAT DIDN'T KNOW DIME: You didn't know him, so stop acting like you did just to stay in good standing with the DFW metal crowd. If you're good enough, people will like you. So stop using Dime as a crutch to lean on when you're feeling insecure about your band's chances of being liked.

Give it a rest already. I'll step down from my soapbox now.

I know for a fact Zack will be able to pull the guitar part off for almost and Pantera song and Dime stuff, but i don't think vocally he can achevie Phil's power in vocals. As for all the other bands they will fail miserably because this ain't no metallica or some machine head song. Very few can do justice to one of the greatest guitarist to ever live. Does it matter? Phil was a cunthair away from rapping on 90% of the songs he sung on. There would be no nu-metal if it weren't for Phil over-compensating bully-victim Anselmo. To criticize Rob Flynn while pretending Phil Anselmo was some kind of metal icon is a profound fucking insult to the entire history of metal.

I think I would like it better if Zakk did both parts together but then again, Part 2 is probably a bit too thrashy for Zakk to play. Wonder if he's gonna use that hideous, disgusting "Gravedigger" guitar for this one.
