DUFF MCKAGAN On THEM CROOKED VULTURES: 'Don't Call Them A Supergroup'
- Nov. 13, 2009
|
|
VELVET REVOLVER/ex- GUNS N' ROSES bassist Duff McKagan has penned the latest installment of his weekly column, which appears every Thursday on Reverb at SeattleWeekly.com. An excerpt follows below. "When I first heard that John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl, and Josh Homme were forming a band last spring, I must say that I was jealous. Are you kidding me?! These three mega-talented and unique figures playing hard rock in a unified and focused group? I was excited, to say the least, from a player's perspective AND as a fan. Then came the inevitable 'supergroup' tags. "Lazy journalists like to put a tag on anything they can in an attempt to sum up a whole genre or movement with a quick phrase that will make their job easier and take a swipe at a band in the process. You know, 'stoner rock,' 'grunge,' 'indie,' 'hair metal,' etc. 'Supergroup' conjures a negative image in my mind, and we in VELVET REVOLVER had to deal with this label in our first year. Fans never called us a supergroup, mind you, only journalists. I've heard this title being bandied about in reference to THEM CROOKED VULTURES, and I think it is a cheap way out." Read McKagan's entire column at SeattleWeekly.com.

Yes, the great Duff McKagen is the one who can unite all Blabbermouth posters....the happy, the angry, the bitter, the tr00, the wiggers, the Metallica haters, the Mustaine bashers....we can all agree that labeling music is stupid as hell.
Them Crooked Vultures is a great band.....I already can't wait for what they do next.

the more Duff speaks, the more I respect him.
The guy NEVER comes across as a famous musician, but rather as a guy who plays happens to be in a band but is still a BIG fan of music in general.
Unless they wear blue tights with a yellow S on it and a red cape, nobody should be called a supergroup.
I pre-order my CD last week and am looking forward to it. Loved the show they played here a month or so ago.

I don't think "Supergroup" tag has to be a bad term, if you are talking amongst genuine fans of music.
But I dig the point Duff is making \m/

He is right on with his analysis of journalists' overuse genre tags. As a music fan, however, I love genre titles. I dont think there is anything wrong with classifying the music i listen to. I listen to different genres of music for different moods, so when searching for new music, I like to know the general idea of what they are trying to express. I dont hold any negative connotations to the term "supergroup" there are plenty of kickass bands that I would consider supergroups. Bands like Down, Bloodbath, Goatwhore, and Lock-up are all awesome metal bands i would consider supergroups

i see what duff means, labeling music is a cheap way out. listen to the music first then judge, don't shove it into one category. but... honestly duff i kinda feel like supergroup is a compliment it's basically "a bunch of awesome guys, playing awesome music." I'd love to be called a super group, but i feel like what duff means is they are quickly labeling a band, and that takes away from the meaning behind the band, the band is a band that coincidentally has alot of awesome member in it and wasn't looking to be a super group. but nevertheless, duff ftw.

playing along side duff...makes them a super group.
duff is below average at it's finest...compositionally, guitar playing, singing, and especially his bass playing.
god bless the studio bassist that tracked his parts while in GNR. he MADE duff.

and there is the token smartass who has too put his two cents and question a musicians ability. i thought the whole point in of playing music was to express yourself and play the music you love to play. Duff is a punk/funk influenced bass player. You can definetly tell this if you actually listen to his lines. so i guess cuz he plays the music he likes that makes him sorry. but i guess any bass/guitar player who doesnt tune their guitars low as hell and sticks to triplets and as fast as possible makes them a sorry player. wait i suppose cause you have to sit behind a keyboard and talk trash makes you a really cool kid. good job. now back to the real subject which is THEM CROOKED VULTURES...sounds like an awesome band and I cant wait to check out their music.

Ok, when famous musicians get together to make music and put out an album, lets all just pretend they are regular joes rocking it out. C'mon, thats just silly.
So we can throw out labels like All-Stars and Dream Teams and the Justice Leauge and the Legion of Doom. I mean, NATO and the Axis Of Evil. Oh, and Groupies. I bet Duff used to like him some Groupies.
Dude, life is labels. Its how we organize shit. Fuck, even one of the Beatles, Ringo, puts together his Ringo's ALL STARS every now and then. At least he has the common sense to call it as it is. Look Duff, if you want to reinvent yourself, stick with Loaded and don't hook up with Supergroups anymore.

all u duff stans, he is being a baby over this,,there is nothing wrong with the term supergroup, all it is is a way of saying that all or most of the members are estblished veterans in other succesful bands, its not meant to label a band, and in most cases these so called supergroups are just that they dont put out much more than 1 or 2 albums, ( in most cases) there are exeptions obviously..you are all taking it way to serious get over it.. i will always use the term if it is neccesary..

As for Them Crooked Vultures, it's just more soft rock from Josh Homme.
Get over your ego Josh and get a Kyuss reunion going already so I can give a fuck about what you are doing again.
