DEE SNIDER Wants To 'Take Back The Horns'
- Nov. 16, 2009
|
|
Motivated by what he calls the "systematic abuse" of the metal horns, heavy metal icon and frontman for the legendary band TWISTED SISTER, Dee Snider has launched a web site dedicated to the reclamation of our iconic heavy metal symbol, TakeBackTheHorns.com. "The rampant misuse and overuse of the metal horns is an insult to true fans of the music form it represents," says Dee, "They were never intended to be thrown by members of the hip hop, country and pop communities. We fought long and hard for the music we love to be recognized. They have no right to use our sign!" While absolutely recognizing the humor in the situation, TakeBackTheHorns.com is dedicated to not only raise awareness of this abuse, but the site has been designed to inform and educate the reader on the history and proper use of the metal horns. Dee Snider hopes it will unify the massive, heavy metal community in the fight to stop the metal horns' further exploitation and degradation. Says Dee, "I appreciate the appeal of throwing the horns and even acknowledge that its overuse shows just how far the acceptance of heavy metal has come as a music form. But when little Johnny throws the horns to his mom because he's successfully made a number two, things have gone way too far." TakeBackTheHorns.com also contains a section for visitors to post photos of abusers of the horns and an interactive "Metal or Not" rating system to help define and decide the proper usage of the iconic symbol. ?? Dee goes on to say, "In the '80s, I went to Washington, D.C. to defend heavy metal and fight censorship. Now it's time for me to defend the music I love again and fight a very different enemy. I need headbangers the world over to join me in this important fight. Let's say to the purveyors of other music forms, the usurpers of our mark...get your own damn sign bee-otch! Let's take back the horns...dot com!"

^Actually if you pay attention Snyder's been really busy since 1987 with radio and other projects. We lost the horns years ago when people like Avril starting using em and 12 year old girls latched onto that. Good on Dee to try to get em back.

At the age of 37, and after 25 years listening to the band, last saturday I had the privilege of seeing Twisted Sister live for the very first time (it was their first show in Brazil). The band put out an amazing show, one hour and a half of pure rock n roll and, we love them, and they loved the crowd (about 6000 ppl). One of my top-15 shows. Period.
Take back the horns \m/

Are there really definitive lines as to who is and who isn't metal? What if Hank III throws the horns while he's wearing a cowboy hat and boots and playing a song called "Country Heroes" or one of this grandfather's songs. I'd challenge anyone who says he isn't metal. Dee's idea is entertaining, but farsical at best.

its used way too often by people in the mainstream who have no idea what it really represents... give it a couple of years and the posers will have moved on but the real metal will keep the horns high.

Metal, rock or rap? If you're gonna yell "foul" about the misuse of a metal gesture, please don't use a rap gesture. Just sayin.

Im glad to hear im not the only who finds non metal uses of the horns annoying. I was flicking through the tv one night and stopped to see what was going on with a country concert and there were people throwing the Horns! I dont like country but sometimes I look around and see what else is going on out there in the world of music, ok ive taken a liking to Johnny Cash but I wont apologize for that!

Twisted Sister were definately a metal band...people seem to dismiss them nowadays because of the image but check out the first couple of albums ( and remember they were released in 1982/3 )...as heavy as anything that was around at the time. Great band.
I have a lot of respect for Snider as well for how he handled the PMRC business in the 80`s, check out his interview on the Headbangers Journey DVD.

use a "SEARCH ENGINE". No, it's not a fucking train or firetruck. And look up the definition of "MOOT" while you are at it. Here's the site since you are "slow" (slang for idiot): www.dictionary.com TRY ones like GOOGLE, Wikipedia for starters. And btw, GET the COVEN record. It's very cool if you are into the occult. Not "throwing da horns" as part of some retarded metal sausage fest. I think the occult was practiced LOOONG before Dio's GRANDMA threw DA horns at him. She was afraid of elves....

I'll concede that I'm a jackass if you'll concede that you, obviously, have no sense of humor.
Also, I'm not sure why you criticized my usage of the word "moot." I know what it means. "Your point is moot" is a fairly common phrase. I'm also a bit confused by your sporadic use of the Caps Lock. Any particular reason for that?
Last, I've seen Renaissance-era artwork depicting Jesus Christ using the horns. He predates Dio, his grandmother, and that twat from Coven. So there.

There are a lot of people on here up their own asses aren't there.
Humour. So Dee Snider hadn't realised that the Son Of God/A dude from a band called Coven/Something else on Google search would suggest the differing origin of the 'Horns' if you can't see the humour in what he's doing (or acknowledge an attempt at something funny) maybe you should stop wanking off to porn sites and being keyboard warriors for five minutes and realise that you don't have to take life quite so seriously.
It is annoying to see American Idol contestants and Hannah fucking Montana throwing the horns but if you are going to get bent out of shape to this extreme imagine what'll happen when I start taking Honky back for the white man.

Dee Snider is like 60. He and everyone in that Generation know who COVEN and Jinx Dawson is. It's funny how the unaware make fun of the educated. That's what's wrong with the US and music in general. I love the argument part of the forum. Thank god we can still write freely. Won't be long though the way things are.
What the fuck is up with Twisted DEE and the horns anyways? Doesn't he dress like a gurl and sing about fucking high school n shit?? Leave Satan to the Occultists.
