VINCE NEIL: 'We're Just Really Lucky To Be Alive After Some Of The Stuff That We've Done' - Nov. 17, 2009
Heather Muse of Lemondrop.com recently conducted an interview with MÖTLEY CRÜE frontman Vince Neil. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Lemondrop.com: Did you ever think that almost a decade later, you'd still be talking about "The Dirt"? What do you think makes it such a "classic" in the celebrity-memoir genre?

Vince: Yeah, I'm surprised people still kinda talk about it. The one thing about this book was that we really opened ourselves up, and everything was very truthful. If you were an idiot, you don't gloss over it. You own up to it.

I like the way that the book was written. When there was an incident, everybody was there, but nobody saw it the same way — which happens all the time. We just did some crazy stuff, and we're just really lucky to be alive after some of the stuff that we've done over the years.

Lemondrop.com: Is the movie version of "The Dirt" ever going to get made?

Vince: I guess it's just sitting on somebody's desk right now collecting dust. It's always been out of our hands. So if it happens, it's great. If it doesn't, [laughs] I'm not going to sit around and wait for the trailer to come out, you know.

One thing about [the movie], I never even agreed that the movie should be made because how can you really put those lives — our lives and the stuff that we've done — into a two-hour film? There's so much stuff. What do you leave out? What do you put in, and how do you actually capture it on film without it being rated X, really, because of all the excesses: girls and drugs and drinking and all that stuff? I'd rather you leave it to your imagination and picture it in your mind when you read the book. To me, that's cooler.

Lemondrop.com: What's different about touring solo?

Vince: It's looser. It's a lot of fun because it's not so structured ... But my band, we just go out and we don't have a set list or anything.

We just go out that night and we sit down and we go, "Well, what do we want to play tonight?" And we throw down some songs and just go and play. It's everything from tons of cool cover songs and classic MÖTLEY stuff and stuff from solo records and everything in between. You can't do that in MÖTLEY. I just go out and have a lot of fun. It's fun being in MÖTLEY, but this is a lot of fun too.

I enjoy playing the smaller places too. You never get a chance to do that in a band like MÖTLEY CRÜE. So I get kind of the best of both worlds.

What assholes..Vince is the perfect example of what you can get if you are passionate and work hard. He is not the greatest singing around, hell last time I saw the Crue he really disappointed me but I have always respected the guy. From the simply fact that he has very little talent but is all heart. His determination and work ethic is insane. I hope Vince visits a vocal coach because I would love to see Motley again but I know Vince needs some work. It would be great to see Shout At The Devil live in its entirety.

That is the best book about a band ever written. But Vince, you are full of shit. If you were so lucky to be alive, you wouldn't be such a dick to your fans. I have seen him solo a few times and that is what/how he was. Same goes with the $800 I shelled out for two Motely Meet & Greets in 2005. The other three were cool as hell, thank you, etc, and he acted like he had better things to do. He is the weakest link in the Crue now. I used to think it was Nikki's bass playing, but it's his voice for sure.

His dumb ass got into the car with a drunk driver. He's every bit as responsible for his own death as Vince ever was. They both made a mistake... get over it already.

...who calls bullshit when Vince says he plays solo material at his shows? Not true at all. Well, not since the early 90's when Steve Stevens was in the band. For the last several years, a Vince solo show is all Motley Crue.

I'd much rather hear him do his solo material. When I wanna see Motley, I'll go see Motley.

They gotta get Rob Zombie to make The Dirt movie
Zombie could make it real gritty and shocking, and he's gotta step away from the horror flicks for a while anyways

yea they are very lucky to be alive. and they were young and having fun juast as any other rock band should do. and its not like Vince invented drunk driving, its happened to lots of people. It was Razzles fault just as much as Vince, he could have been driving that car not Vince. its just unbelievable that Motley Crue is still going after all these years. and at least they havent sucked for 20 years like Metallica

All of you that bash Vince are ignorant. I have met him several times and he is a great guy. Humble and friendly. Line up all the singers from that genre and he's at the top. Layoff jack asses. Vince, see you at the golf tournament.
