AEROSMITH Bandmates Fear STEVEN TYLER Is 'Struggling Very Badly'
- Nov. 18, 2009

The Pulse of Radio reports: The AEROSMITH drama continues as the rest of the band considers potentially moving forward without frontman Steven Tyler, amid rumors that the singer has gone back to the bad habits that nearly derailed him and the band in their early days. AEROSMITH guitarist Brad Whitford doesn't count out the possibility that Tyler has lapsed back into using drugs, as he told The Pulse of Radio. "This guy has a tremendous history of drug abuse, and you have to be suspicious that this is something that is probably going on with him," he said. "I think that that's got to be a part of this irrational behavior, you know. You're supposed to — people in recovery and stuff, if you're really doing it, it takes a lot of work. Historically or statistically, the majority of people in that situation don't make it. I have a feeling we might be looking at, you know, someone who's just really struggling very badly with this."
Tyler has been estranged from the band since August, when he fell from a stage in South Dakota and forced the group to cancel the rest of its summer tour.
The other members have revealed that Tyler has his own management, and that none of them have had any contact with him in months.
The singer told Classic Rock magazine several weeks ago that he wants to take two years off to work on "Brand Tyler."
Drummer Joey Kramer admits that the rest of the band aren't sure how to proceed, but says they all want to keep playing together: "You know, getting someone else is one of the questions. We all know that there's really no way to replace Steven, but we want to continue touring together. We even have a 40-year anniversary coming up and it's a milestone. We want to be able to celebrate it together and there's millions of fans out there that are dedicated to us."
Tyler joined guitarist Joe Perry onstage in New York last week while the latter was touring with his JOE PERRY PROJECT solo band, telling the crowd that he wasn't quitting AEROSMITH. Perry, however, said after the show that the band's problems were far from over.
Both Perry and Kramer specifically declined to discuss the rumors about Tyler's drug use, although Kramer told The Pulse of Radio he hopes his bandmate "gets some help."

Why all the tiptoeing around this shit?? He's been acting erratically for several years now.
As I've said before...he's acting like a monumental douchebag, BUT that fact remains that he's one of the greatest singers and frontmen in the history of rock'n'roll.
Replacing him is pure folly for a band of Aerosmith's stature. I can understand their frustration but this will NOT be a successful venture.
I daresay that if Tyler doesn't clean up his act and reconcile with his bandmates, then the band should gracefully hang up the Aerosmith moniker and move on to other projects.

I heard from someone that was working the backstage area at the South Dakota show that he was completely "shitfaced" early in the afternoon...hours before the show that night.
If this is true, I hope Steven gets the help he needs.

Or, if he is, he isn't exactly saying it, is he? I'm not sure he should be spouting off about his bandmate & friend "maybe" being involved in some type of substance abuse, without really saying WHY he would say that. If he just Thinks so w/out really being sure, I don't think he should be saying this stuff publicly. If he Does know & it's his way of saying, "hey Steven, we all know you're having Troubles again, & we want to help, so don't shut us out or there will be no Aerosmith" -- in effect, like they're saying it publicly to make Tyler do something IF he's back to self-medicating with whatever it might be. If he leaves, I don't care who they get---I doubt they'll be playing Arenas or "sheds" in the summer like they usually do. Who's a big enough singer to fill his shoes? Find some YOUTUBE singer (like JOURNEY & JUDAS PRIEST) did and Hope the fans come out, or be relegated to playing smaller theater sized venues. Not that I think they need the money after all this time, you would hope. If they can't work it out, then like "Aces High99" wrote above, it might be time to hang it up.
This is from someone who's FIRST Tattoo is their logo with flames/smoke above it, has seen almost Every tour since 1977, has a license plate of "MA KIN", & had Joey Sign his name under the tattoo in August at a book signing in Mass., so I could get That tattoo'd over to make permanent as well. That is my plan also when Tyler's book comes out, IF he does book signings in the area. This may take a while for them to figure it out I'm afraid...

Do the other guys in Aerosmith owe money to the mob or something? Coming up on 40 years together and they can't let Steven take some damn time off?
Take a damn break, give the guy some F'n time off, to get high, sober, do a solo album, whatever the hell he wants. If I was him I would tell you slave drivers to piss off.

I think you're right. but Brad & JP have alluded to the drugs/alcohol, I don't think they'd even go there unless there really was a problem. Otherwise, if they "thought" he might be, I dont' think they'd air that in public...this is a plea to steven, a power move by the other guys to hopefully knock some sense into Steven. I'm sure they'd help, but it sounds like Tyler isn't returning calls. ST trying to keep up w/the new young girlfriend?....I'm sure ASmith has no desire to get another singer, they know it wouldn't be the same, but they have to try something.

SUCCESSFUL people enjoy working and doing what they love. This is their life, their job, their music, passion, etc etc...
Sometimes they can take a few MONTHS off, but two years OFF is a long time.
Everyone is different, and Steven is acting like a child.

you are right, but from a fan's standpoint, after 35+ years of a band, it wouldn't cut it for 99% of fans. it would be lacking an important piece. I say "go for it", keep rockin', get another guy (I hope they wouldn't call it Aerosmith but sure they would), but I wouldn't be all the excited about it...though I haven't been that excited about their music in a long time. (though one of the better "old" bands live, if not THE best).

The band should just go out as "Smith's Arrow". Everyone would know who it was. Grab some singer from an Aerosmith tribute band and go ahead out. To be honest, they would do much better that way than trying to do it as Aerosmith featuring Gary Cherone or whatever. The fans will reject fake aerosmith, but would probably stay arena level the other way. It would be similar to the Velvet Revolver thing.
