METALLICA Bassist On Missing Fan: 'I Was Crushed' - Nov. 18, 2009
The Pulse of Radio reports: Tuesday (November 17) marked one month since the disappearance of METALLICA fan Morgan Harrington from outside the band's concert in Charlottesville, Virginia. The 20-year-old Virginia Tech student vanished after she accidentally left the venue and was unable to get back in. Although she called her friends inside and said she'd either wait for them or find her own way home, Harrington was not seen again. METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo told The Pulse of Radio how he felt when he first heard about the situation. "I mean, I was crushed," he said. "Stuff like this just really, really bums me out, especially when you are a parent and you have children. I mean, it's the worst thing that you could ever imagine. And of course, you know, we're all hoping for the best and just praying that she's alive. It really hit a sour chord with us and bummed us out."

Police have had few leads in the Harrington case, despite extensive searches by air and on the ground. Her cell phone and purse were found in the area outside the arena, with one report suggesting that she might have tried to use another concertgoer's phone to make a call.

Other unconfirmed reports suggest that Harrington was last seen hitchhiking.

Harrington's parents have offered a $100,000 reward for information on her whereabouts, with METALLICA adding another $50,000 to the total.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has gotten involved with the search, fielding calls and taking any information about Harrington's case. Executive director Bob Lowery told Noisecreep.com, "We're going to pursue this case like Morgan is still alive and she's safe and we're not going to give up until we find out otherwise."

was she unable to get back in? Was she stopped by security?

In Europe we get a stamp on our hand or arm before we get in so we can go outside when we want to. Don't they do it like that in the US?

This is a really sad story. I hope they find her alive. She should have been let back into the show if she had her ticket stub. If I were her parents, I'd sue the venue for sure.

Pretty much every place I've been to in the US with one exception has had a rule that once you leave, you cannot reenter without buying another ticket. I'm not sure why that rule is there, if it's to prevent people from sneaking in or for insurance reasons or whatever, but I lost a signed Gwar poster because of that. The only place that I've been to that allowed reentry wasn't so much a venue, but a hotel ballroom that had been rented for a concert.

the JPJ Arena where the concert took place has a 'no re-entry policy'. once you're out - you're out. doesnt matter if you show them the ticket again.
Looking back, that's the reason she's gone now.

sure, I understand security and the importance of securing against un-ticketed entry... goes without saying.

... But any door / security firm refusing assistance or entry to a 20 YEAR OLD KID! A F*KNG GIRL ON HER "OWN" FOR GODS SAKES, in that kind of capacity? You can't just leave a kid out on the street on her own like that

I hope

A) She's found without harm
B) This is a lesson to venues, to take steps to avoid anything as awful as this happening on their turf again

f*kng awful

First of all Metallica fans are mostly guys with a handful of girls thrown in..this is not a Britney Spears show.. This girl happens to be beautiful, young and should never have been kept out there alone... The security who didnt let her back in are jerks and they should feel the guilt.,, I was also thinking they could be involved somehow with her murder, possibility.. The girl is most likely dead-sadly. SO tragic.

COMMENT | Tragic for sure but this is why re-entry is not allowed

Let's say three guys go to a show but only two have tickets. Two enter, then one leaves with both tickets in hand. Then giving the ticket to someone else. Or re-selling it. We should in the US do some sort of hand stamp or something so this never happens again.

how can people be so stupid, why did the security let her wonder off at least they should have gotten her friends to prove that she had a ticket. or at least made her wait until the concert was over so she can catch up with her friends.

Where venues have to allow you back in if you show proof that you paid. I know it's a slippery slope, but people's kids are going to these shows and we need to know that they are half-way safe.

It's not the venue's job to babysit drunk teenage chicks who are probably dressed like sluts. She left the venue and thier rule was to not allow reentry. why was she wondering around without her friends anyway? it sounds like she made a series of bad decisions that led to her abduction. i feel bad for her and for her family, but how is that the venue's fault?

Totally agree with Skinny Puppy. This is a sad story, but it sounds like the girl made some really stupid decisions that led to her abduction. In no way, shape or form is the venue responsible for this. No re-entry rules are legit and should stay in place.

Here we go again...

How could the band even care unless it's to boost their 'fan-friindly' image? I mean, there was a few thousand people in there. She disappeared, like a lot of other people who did before her leaving gigs, parties, church, malls...whatever. Metallica is not responsible for anything and she probably was the only person able to do anything to help herself...too bad. Life goes on!

Damn, wish I was in Europe, pretty much NOWHERE in the US they let you back in venues, except for some 21 & up small nightclub shows. I think the main reason is because they don't want underage people going and getting drunk and coming back, because the venue can be liable if anything happens to them. But its still stupid, most venues are very strict about it. Like I have almost walked out of an arena (sober) because it was set up weird, and the exit is right next to the smoking section. I've seen people accedently walk out while the security watched them just exit slightly, then realize their mistake, but talk to security and security won't let them back in. I think in situations like that, where the security see's the person walk out from inside the venue by mistake, have their ticket in hand, thurn around before ever leaving the security guard's site, they should let them back in. Hopefully this case will make venues re-think this rule.

I live in Toronto and was at the Pink Floyd Concert at the C.N.E. when Benji went missing. They found him days later drowned after tripping out on drugs.
You cannot blame the venue. Security is responsible for the thousands of people in attendance and I'm sure they encountered more than just the one drunk girl trying to get back in. Had they left their post or made the exception and something happened then the blame could be placed on them.
What if this story took a different turn, the girl left, tried to get back in, wasn't allowed because of security policy and sued the venue for making her miss half the concert. Then we would all be cheering for the security for following rules.
Situation is horrible, and I wish all involved a happy ending, but blaming an employee for following rules is not the way to go.

'How could the band even care unless it's to boost their 'fan-friindly' image?" So, do you know what is in their hearts and minds, you know Metallica personally? How is this the only option? Maybe they just give a shit and are not as cynical as you. Maybe there is some other reason. Who cares. At least they put in some reward money and keep the news circulating.

I was at this show and I can tell you the venue's not in the middle of nowhere, it's surrounded by UVA apartment complexes. Local news here say that she was seen drunk and when her purse was found her cell phone battery had been removed, which means either she didn't want to be found or whoever might have taken her didn't want to be found ...

... in the US, from what I gather, are mostly enforced at venues where minors are allowed. The point being to stop them from going back out to the car every now and then to chug a few beers, whatever. For that matter it also prevents adults from avoiding having to pay $7 a beer by going back out to the car and dipping into the cooler between bands. Crass capitalism? Yes. Devious negligence? No.

The only possible way the venue gets in trouble here is if maybe, just maybe, if it's established beyond a reasonable doubt that she met with foul play right there in the venue parking lot and the venue failed to get it on tape. Even then I don't think it's a slam dunk case.

Can't speak for The Eagle but I do agree that these media quotes are pointless in situations like this. Sure, the guys may give a shit, but even if they could care less you would still expect the same stock answers when a reporter comes asking about it.

Same thing with the president coming out and calling something like the Ft. Hood shootings "a senseless tragedy". No shit? I was kind of on the fence whether it was a good or bad thing so thanks for clarifying morality for me, mr. prez.

Yeah I agree with you chrisbell. By the way I agree with your first comment also and with Lom's / The Eagle comment. I have to say something though about the 'tallica , the concerts and the crowd.

Kudos to 'tallica for showing they care about their fans. How may other artists would put up 1 penny if something like this were to happen at their show? I read online someone disappeared from a U2 concert in 1992, did U2 put up any $$$ to help for a reward? hmmm I wonder...

First Metallica concert I saw was as a kid was in '89 and I was in the mosh pit, about 10 feet from the guys. It was awesome, I will never forget it! I think the comment by ...zzz.. was kind of ridiculous. Of coure metallica fans are more hardcore then slayer/megadeath fans.

I have seen 'tallica 15 times since that first show and every time they have been full of energy and put on a great show. I have seen megadeath once in 20 years and they were OK but not great. I imagine slayer is equally impressive, at best and in their dreams both bands would qualify as opening acts for Metallica.

Now that being said zzz seems to have been to a few 'tallica shows. If you don't like getting general admission seats or possible being involved in a mosh pit then GET SEATS. Its really simple and you dont have to worry about people crowd surfing on your head. Instead of blaming the fans for being so passionate use your brain. If you cant jump in the fire then get out of the pit. Sad but true...

I hope Morgan is found and that whoever took or hurt her is captured. Justice for Morgan, And Justice for All!!!

While most are watching this disappearance another one has happened in Miami Florida. Ted Daniels was at Cici's pizza agitated. When a policeman entered he said, "They're coming after me," and left. Found sleeping in a parking lot he was taken to the hospital for the second time. He evaded police by leaving that hospital without treatment. His family is going to Miami to search for him.

The facts in Morgan's case, when correctly evaluated, point to the same problem.

She was seen to fall and was unable to communicate when she stood up. Another witness saw her crying the the restroom. She was alone crossing two parking lots. The disabled cell had to be her doing. Her parents say she would not have hitch hiked but witnesses say she did.

She is alive, eating and sleeping somewhere. The problem is that we can't know if she is hiding in the general area or is running. That's what these episodes are called in other countries. They are first noted in 1880's France.

Many of the victims recover and phone or email home. Ahmad Arain, UCLA, was gone six weeks. Matthew Wilson, Rice, was recovered after eight months. Unless she is a crime or accident victim she will come home too.

VisionAndPsychosis.Net is a seven year project about the cause of these incidents, Subliminal Distraction exposure. My wife had the episode and I have first hand knowledge of what it can do.

Virginia Tech was warned after the Cho shooting but they took no action to investigate Subliminal Distraction. SD is explained in first semester psychology under the physiology of sight. Failure to provide Cubicle Level Protection would make VTech responsible for 33 deaths.

SD exposure caused mental breaks for office workers forty years ago. The cubicle was designed to stop the episodes in offices by 1968. Using a computer or studying where there is movement in peripheral vision allows the problem to happen.

This case is featured on the Missing Students page at VisionAndPsychosis.Net.
