OPETH: New Video Interview Posted Online - Nov. 19, 2009
The U.K. branch of Roadrunner Records conducted an interview with guitarist Fredrik Åkesson and Per Wiberg of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH when the band played London, England with DREAM THEATER on October 10, 2009. The chat can be viewed below.

OPETH's tour bus was involved in a road crash last month after the driver of the other car made a U-turn in the middle of the highway. According to guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt, who was not travelling on the bus at the time of the incident, "it seems as if [the incident] was a deliberate death stunt [on the part of the other car's driver] as the police had found a suicide letter in the car wreck."

OPETH's tour bus was travelling from Dublin, Ireland to Brussels, Belgium when the incident occurred.

Bassist Martin Mendez and Per Wiberg were the only two members of OPETH that were present on the bus at the time of the crash.

Åkerfeldt, drummer Martin "Axe" Axenrot and Fredrik Åkesson had opted to fly home to their families for a few days while the band had three days off before its next concert (October 17 in Brussels as part of the Progressive Nation 2009 tour with DREAM THEATER, BIGELF and UNEXPECT).

None of the OPETH musicians or members of their road crew were injured in the incident.

Opeth has become one of my alltime favourite bands within the last three years, along with Cannibal Corpse, Immortal and Devin Townsend/SYL. Looking forward to a new album, I still rotate Watershed frequently...

Watershed is a decent album, but it doesn't match up to Ghost Reveries, or anything before that for that matter, maybe except for Orchid. There's a personality and a bit of magic every Opeth album has, but Watershed seems to lack something. Maybe its the shift in playing over songwriting - I can get that fix with a Dream Theater album. :-p

I've always thought of Katatonia as a great band in Opeth's shadow, but with their new album, they're outdoing them.

win

Watershed and Ghost are an at least once every couple of weeks experience for me still (more if there's a long drive involved).

And as for Devvy.... well... Townsend is a strange canadian, alien god right now

Opeth are the most singularly overated band in metal history. Their meandering tri-tone infused songs are so stuck to a dull formula it is beyond belief. Nice but badly played acoustic guitar followed by pre-requisite growling have reduced them to the ultimate cliche of prog-death. I mean honestly how can anyone listen to a vocalist who sings in an adequate clean voice then subject themselve to the montrosity that follows.
There is no technical leads. Rather benign pentatonic harmonies that simply do not cut it.
Drumming is OK. Bass playing is rudimentary. The guitar on which this whole sad excuse for progressiveness is based is unfocused. Soft section, metal section oh I am bored.
