DEVILDRIVER, SUFFOCATION: First Dates Announced - Nov. 19, 2009
Santa Barbara, California's DEVILDRIVER will embark on a five-week North American headlining tour in January. Direct support on the dates will come from New York extreme metal legends SUFFOCATION.

Commented SUFFOCATION in a statement: "SUFFOCATION is very excited to be touring with DEVILDRIVER. We know this will be an incredible tour, and encourage the fans to come out and see this amazing lineup!"

Although the full lineup for DEVILDRIVER's headlining trek has not yet been announced, THY WILL BE DONE revealed from the stage at last week's concert in Farmingdale, New York (with MACHINE HEAD) that they will be taking part in the tour, alongside GOATWHORE. It should be noted, however, that this information has not yet been corroborated by an official source and should be treated as a rumor only at this point.

The first ten shows are as follows (more dates to be announced soon):

Jan. 07 - Pomona, CA @ Glasshouse
Jan. 08 - San Francisco, CA @ Slims
Jan. 09 - Ventura, CA @ Majestic Ventura Theater
Jan. 11 - Portland, OR @ Peter's Room at Roseland Theater
Jan. 12 - Seattle, WA @ Studio Seven
Jan. 13 - Vancouver, BC @ Rickshaw Theatre
Jan. 15 - Grand Junction, CO @ Mesa Theater
Jan. 16 - Englewood, CO @ Gothic Theatre
Jan. 18 - Maplewood, MN @ The Rock
Jan. 19 - Milwaukee, WI @ The Rave

According to a new online post by DEVILDRIVER bassist Jon Miller, the Santa Barbara, California-based metallers have six songs "in the bag" for the group's forthcoming album, which they "are looking to record sooner than later." He added, "We want to go faster and heavier on this one to answer any question on a 'direction' that we may be undertaking."

DEVILDRIVER drummer John Boecklin elaborated further on the status of the songwriting sessions for the band's next CD. Writing on the group's official MySpace blog, Boecklin stated, "On our last record, I would say we stretched as far as we could outside of what we had done in the past, trying new and slower songs with vocal melody like 'It's In The Cards' or the rock like feel of songs like 'Back With A Vengeance' and 'Teach Me To Whisper'. For our latest effort, we feel like musically going for the throat, so to speak.

"Are we gonna make a death metal album? No! We always have a heavy emphasis on groove and hook. That will not change. We just feel we have a certain anger edge about us and the songs we are writing compared to our last one. It will not be rushed and if you are a fan, you will not be let down!!"

Video footage of DEVILDRIVER's November 7, 2009 performance in Munich, Germany can be viewed below (courtesy of "eblinternational").

DEVILDRIVER's latest album, "Pray For Villains", sold around 14,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 35 on The Billboard 200 chart.

DEVILDRIVER's previous CD, 2007's "The Last Kind Words", shifted a little more than 14,000 copies during its first week of release to debut at No. 48 — around 40 percent more than the opening-week number of 2005's "The Fury of Our Maker's Hand", which premiered at No. 177 with sales of 10,400.

"Pray For Villains" was released on July 14 via Roadrunner Records. The effort — which was also made available as a special-edition CD/DVD package featuring three bonus tracks, a behind-the-scenes DVD and expanded artwork — was recorded at Edge of the Earth studios in Los Angeles with producer Logan Mader (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, GOJIRA, DIVINE HERESY).

I agree with HigherLearning.
Although Suffocation are brilliantly are legends in death metal, DevilDriver has a much bigger fanbase and sells more.
Same goes for the Cynic and BTBAM tour.

Anyone from Portland know what the hell "Peter's Room" is? I've been to the Roseland plenty of times, but I've never heard of that.

Been a fan of them for years. Only saw them once open for Lamb of God a few years back at Hammerstein in NYC (sick show). Loved Pray for Villains for nothing beats Last Kind Words. Suffocation is great, but obviously they're not as big of draw. Dumbass people don't understand the difference between 'personal preference' and 'marketing'...

DevilDriver is just better imo.Suffocation are ok,but nothing great for death metal.I have a couple of their albums and almost never listen to them..maybe I have the wrong ones??I remember my brother bought Annihilation of the Wicked by Nile, and I bought Souls to Deny from Suffocation and man was it hard to stay interested in Souls to Deny when we just listened to AOTW..then again Nile is the best death metal band around sooo...Now I have to decide to see this show or the Nile tour with Krisiun...prob gonna go with the Nile show

if you are a retard, yeah. What have Devildriver contributed to metal? Absolutely nothing. they are just a metalcore band trying to be all 'dark' and mysterious. Suffocation are pioneers.

Judging Suffocation on 'Souls To Deny' is like judging Slayer on 'Christ Illusion', or Celtic Frost on 'Vanity/Nemesis'.

I love DevilDriver, bring on "you're retarded then" comments :P

I saw them with LoG and Killswitch 2 years ago, but I didn't really listen to them back then. In essence this would be my first real DD show.

I'm not a huge Suffocation fan (the blast beat heavy stuff never really does it for me, I'm into the groovy stuff a la DD or LoG more than anything else), but I can certainly respect their influence, and if they're brutal live, that's good enough for me :D

Does this mean Suffocation likes Devildriver? I kinda like to think that this is sort of like Corrosion of Conformity opening for Disturbed. Anyone remember that one?

Pepper Keenan called Disturbed one of the most boring bands he's ever seen... haha that was great.

first off, i'm not a DevilDriver fan AT all, but kudos to them for taking Suffocation out. As for whether or not the Suffocation guys LIKE DevilDriver, they probably don't care, this will put them in front of large crowds who've probably mostly never heard of them, but hopefully will be converted by seeing them live! It's a win-win for them!

well, like I said I have 2 or their records, and the word boring comes to mind.I love death metal, and while alot of ppl look at this band as pioneers I dont at all.ALL the florida death metal bands are a hell of alot better than them.Cannibal,Six Feet, Morbid, Deicide are the pioneers. What did they have a bad stretch of albums?Just proves my point.Look in the mirror when calling out the word retard.

COMMENT | ^^You need to look up the word pioneer..

fucking retard. Just because you don't like them, it doesn't mean they weren't innovative. Your opinion does not control the world of musical influence. Learn to separate opinion from fact.

Suffocation are widely acknowledged as one of the, if not THE, innovators of ultra technical brutal death. They influenced a shitload of bands. Death metal was not the same after Suffocation. None of those bands you listed sound anything like them, and were just as influenced by thrash. Suffocation broke death metal away from its thrash straightjacket.

These are facts. whether you accept them or not is irrelevant.

Peter's room is the name for the downstairs bar at the roseland. It used to be 21 and over but they made it alll ages now, that's where Devildriver played when they were here with Snot.
