ROB HALFORD Is Not Ashamed to Get Into The Christmas Spirit - Nov. 19, 2009
Keith Carman of Exclaim.ca recently conducted an interview with JUDAS PRIEST frontman Rob Halford. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

One recording a Christmas album with the HALFORD band:

"Just by association, I think that when everybody heard that the Metal God was doing a Christmas album, they had a sharp taking [in] of breath. But that's to be expected. The fact of the matter is that I've the luxury of a solo career that lets me do the unexpected. Having said that, like everybody else, I just love the Christmas holidays. I do the same things that everyone else does. In my mind, it's not that much of a stretch."

"I did this for a few reasons but the main genesis was a moment for me personally to express myself in a way that I've never done before. I just want to do what's important to me. As a musician, that's the way it should be. You stand by your choices. It just took a while to get to the point where we all wanted to do it. Once that decision was made, we ran with it.

"When you're covering such great composers, it's inspiring to have the opportunity to cover work that's already established and given various kinds of treatments. And for you to enjoy the challenge of putting your distinctive approach on the arrangements. That was important for us when we put this together: to make sure we could give it the HALFORD band stamp."

On the band's ability to pen some thematically similar yet equally epic and raucous originals for the Christmas record:

"When we first agreed to do this type of record, there wasn't any inclination to go into self-composing mode because there's so much great material already out there. But the ideas started to flow forth and we were all so excited and inspired by the music we were covering that it was natural to be motivated and noodle around with ideas that came. You feed off each other's creativity. It was unexpected but it was great. It was a treat to show that as a band, we can also step forward in the spirit of the season and make music that fits with everything else we've done."

On a potential sophomore holiday affair should the opportunity arise again:

"I had so much fun making this record. They're very uplifting songs. We'll see how it goes. The global reception has been strong so far and there were many other tracks/opportunities to cover in this vein that we didn't get to this time. If we've got enough to make full release, maybe we'll go for it."

In the end it's Halford's call to do whatever he wants in his band, but I too can't help but feeling this was a bad move. Honestly, it doesn't make a difference if you put chugging guitar riffs over the melody or use your trademark falsetto scream in the end it's still not very good at all... they are Christmas Carols. If people want to listen to Christmas Carols typically the average person will want to listen to the TRADITIONAL versions and average metal fans want to listen to metal music....so it's really hard to grasp who he's aiming for with this release...I mean barr himself cause he clearly loves it so much... I bought it purely as a diehard Halford/Fight/Priest fan and collector but it's just awful and can never see myself playing it whatever mood I'm in.

If Christmas is a happy time in Rob's life that's cool, invite your family and friends round have a good dinner, celebrate the birth of Jesus, exchange gifts etc if you want to spread some christmas cheer to your fans you should have just setup a winter tour with Halford!

Season's Greetings.

This is why you gotta love him.
Mustaine sells 87,000 units, is out on tour with Slayer and is bitching that roadrunner isnt doing enough to promote him.

Halford sells just over 2400 and says he's in the Christmas spirit.

this shit is crazy and it started with TS singing Xmas carols. I am disgusted to read crap like this.

I personally think it's awesome that he did this album. I love the traditional versions of these songs, but it's nice to hear them done in a different way. And, Christian, or not, you can't deny the power of the traditional hymns. Oh Holy Night is a heavy and powerful song.

He sings about a holiday the majority of you all celebrate, even if the extent of that ends with gifts...big deal.

He's doing what he wants to do, and that's cool. If anyone in Metal has earned that right, it's Rob.

Good for him, and from what I hear, it sounds good!

dont see how this would suck. sit back with some brandy and christmas pudding, and strap in for the ride.
xmas tunes are not all christ themed. things like jingle bells,
frosty the snow man and its xmas and ground zero dont
deal with the dude upstairs

besides, if twisted sister could do a xmas disc, then why cant the
metal god?.

"f people want to listen to Christmas Carols typically the average person will want to listen to the TRADITIONAL versions and average metal fans want to listen to metal music....so it's really hard to grasp who he's aiming for with this release.."

that's exactly it. Where is the market for this sort of thing? It's collection fodder for diehard Priest/Halford fans, and nothing more.

It's not a bad album, but it's pure novelty.

...he wanted to put some 'metal' into the holidays; so you can have your fav.'s (Christmas songs & theme) & have metal, too; at the same time. I bet it's heavier than Spears or Alan Jackson/GARTH - christmas CD's.

It might be good, 1 things for sure, you are only buying it for about a month...and a few days now, this year anyway.

Good on him, Halfords appeal over the years has been his unpredictability so this comes as a welcome suprise from a brilliant man.

make that 2401 copies.

People should come out of the closet and realize that metal isn't just about being the man you are and stay true to leather. Halford actually discovers different sides of music, and all a lot of people do is cry over it. Let the man do what he wants, its not like his status as a metal god disappears. JUDAS PRIEST AND HALFORD forever!

I thought "oh an xmas album, how good could it be", and I bought this Halford 3 - Winter Songs...and IT IS TOTALLY UNBELIEVABLE. It is amazing, it rocks so hard, it's not really an xmas album, it's a killer metal album. Guys, buy this album and be shocked, there is nothing lame about it once you hear it.

Don't judge this until you hear this album, I'm telling you it is f'in amazing, forget the xmas stuff, it's a crushing metal album totally done with creativity. This is hard-core Halford, I am pleasantly surprised with Winter Songs.
