SLAYER's LOMBARDO Wants To Teach METALLICA's ULRICH How To Play
- Nov. 20, 2009
|
|
The new issue of Rhythm magazine, available from November 24, features an in-depth interview with SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo. In the feature, written by SLAYER biographer Joel McIver, Lombardo discusses his Cuban roots, his early influences and the high points of his 28-year career all the way up to the release of the Los Angeles thrash quartet's latest album, "World Painted Blood". Excerpts from the interview follow. Rhythm: Tell us about the drumming on "World Painted Blood". Lombardo: "Man, I can't tell you how pleased I am with it! The producer, Greg Fidelman, is an all-round musician as far as I know, but he's especially keen on drums and very, very good at recording them. I swear to you, there were times when I'd record a dozen fills and he'd sit down with me and dissect each one — stroke by stroke! Literally one hit, and then another hit, and then another one — and then we'd decide whether to use this fill or that roll or whatever. It was incredible." Rhythm: Playing with METALLICA at Download in 2004 must have been quite an experience. (See/hear video/audio footage below.) Lombardo: "Yeah. Show 'em how it's done! No disrespect to Lars [ Ulrich], because Lars is great and he's a very nice guy, but he needs to spend a week at my house and we need to sit down and play. I could show him — 'No, Lars, like this!'… 'Let's chill, let's relax, have some coffee and let's play!' Hahahahaha!" Rhythm: When you played blastbeats on the song "Supremist", on the 2006 album "Christ Illusion", everybody wondered if SLAYER were going to turn death metal… Lombardo: "It's what the riff demanded. See, that's my thing — I can't close the door on other music. I expose myself to this stuff to stay on top and to let people know, 'Hey, I'm aware of what's going on!' Just because I don't play it, doesn't mean I'm not aware of it. I'll throw in little tidbits here and there. For example, I've been listening to all this jungle [hums frantic drum'n'bass pattern] To me it's like England's rap. It's very cool. I love that music — I really enjoy it because it's fast, and it moves." Rhythm: So have you heard CANNIBAL CORPSE and the other death metal bands doing blastbeats? Lombardo: "I've heard it. Does it impress me? No, because too much is over-redundant. I can't tolerate it, it's just [hums series of machine-like blasts]… there's no feeling." Rhythm: It was rumored a while back that you had a problem with your thyroid gland from drinking too much caffeine. True? Lombardo: "I don't know if it was the coffee. I doubt it. I think it was just too much touring. I started noticing that I was losing a lot of weight, and my heart was beating at 170 beats a minute — just while I was sitting down! I would wake up in the middle of the night and my bed would be soaking wet, because I would be tossing and turning and really hot. It was really bad. I turned into a complete skeleton, it was insane. So they zapped me with radio-iodine, I took this radioactive pill, and I think it shrunk it [my thyroid gland] down, because I feel great and I've gained weight. The only nervousness or agitation I feel is if I drink a little too much coffee. Actually I was taking more caffeine while I was sick, because having your heart rate go that fast, 24 hours a day, you get tired — so I'd drink Red Bull and coffee and more on top of that!" Rhythm magazine is available from the usual stores and at this location.

To say that Kollias, for example, is a better drummer than Lombardo because he is faster--and that's all Kollias really is, FAST--is, to me, a rather myopic view of the whole creative enterprise.

Hahaha...that's a pretty ballsy statement from Dave. Definitely guaranteed to stir some shit up.
I don't think even the most hardcore Metallica fan would deny that Lars' drum skills have been in decline for some time. His playing is so lazy and without focus...he's got the energy and the raw ability to be much better, but he's lacking the discipline and the will.
Where's the subtlety? Where are the intricate bass drum patterns, working the high-hat with finesse, using a RIDE CYMBAL for additional color, effective use of his toms, etc.? None of it's there...he just beats the hell out of his snare, hits the bass drum if he feels like it, and smashes on that loud, clangy china cymbal to cover up all of his deficiencies.
He seems very content to be a big rich rockstar, and just bash away mindlessly while making scary faces and over-exaggerated "metal" gestures that just plays to the crowd.
Good performer, bad technician.

Kirk is in the same boat too. sure it's fashionable now to be all revisionist and say Kirk was never good at guitar, but in the late 80's, people were not saying he was a 'limited' player like they are now. He was considered one of the best. But now he can barely play his own solos.

Yeah, Kirk's solos on ...And Justice For All alone show what a talented, creative guitarist he can be. Shortest Straw? Forget about it!

Metallica gets more shit for it because A. they were the first to try it and B. It worked for them.

I thought I would be the only one to mention that James's voice SUCKS these days. I used to love his vocals and anymore his voice makes me wince. It's so fuckin' thin - and that goddamn yodelling thing has got to go! For a while it was a Danzig rip off then he made it more his own (and made it "hella" worse, too). I won't even go in to the lyrics that used to contain some beautiful poetry and now mostly seem vapid. I have some critique about Slayer lately, too, but at leasat they have remained completely true to their sound and their fans. Dave's got some ballz to say something like that about Lars, but really, who gives a crap when their material and their performances have become a mere shadow of their former greatness.

and both aren't doing anything thrilling on drums of late, Lars more so than Lombardo obviously. However, I think a lot of people in the metal world, especially non musicians, confuse playing skill with song writing skill. Lar's is a great song writer/arranger. Almost any drummer can play his stuff but can almost any drummer write his stuff? No.

Anyone with a slight musical hear can claim Lars has problems keeping up with the music. His style is more and more generic and his ability to keep tempo dropped with time. He's among the most overrated drummers around, mainly because of the status of his band. Technical ability is not even in question when the feel of your playing is just not right.
I love the sound of the new Slayer, it's brutally honest and the drums sounds good.

Lars was one of the greatest. He had his own sound, specially hitting cymbals randomly ("The Thing That Should Not Be"). I really liked him until he seemed to don't care anymore about drumming. Listen to any "Battery" live recording from the same time as Lombardo taking his seat. Double bass is no more. However, I think this sounds fits better for the mainstream Rock band that METALLICA has become. If he played beast-like Lombardo + fierce vocals (gone too) from that tall ex drunk guy that laughs when his music is used for torture, METALLICA wouldn't be accepted that much in the mainstream scene and among fanboys (most of them posers).

See the problem is, why would you even want to break a sweat playing drums when you know mindless jocks are going to continue to pay millions to come see you play your songs half assed? Does not anybody understand that Dave was joking??! I`m sure if Lars reads this, he will get the joke. Dave and Lars knew each other in the 80`s. You should stop looking at everything so seriously, and get a life!.
I agree that Lars isn`t as good as he used to be, his playing is stiff and unimaginative. At times he could have used the same drumkit as Ringo Starr used in the 60`s; a drum and a high hat. Dave is not the God of drums. He has a different, more straight-in-your-face-style of playing, but he uses the WHOLE kit, Lars does not.

Now, let the big kids discuss the issue. I think Lars should go for it. It's not like Dave is trying to turn Lars into a Lombardo Clone or anything, he just wants to help him a little.

I never thought lars was a good drummer, and when he started bitching and complaining about every thing, I lost interest in Metallica all together.

I'd love to have this happen. As a metallica fan / drummer who thinks that there is not a single difficult metallica song to play drums to (except maybe Dyers Eve in a couple spots, but even then), I hate to see Lars fumbling his songs on youtube. Plus, the next Metallica record would FUCKING DESTROY if Lars advanced himself.
Do it, Lars. Just don't tell anybody and deny rumors that you did, if you want to save face.

World Painted Blood is Lombardo's best album, and it is easily Slayer's best since Seasons. I'm glad he didn't tear Lars apart. It would seem out of character and uncalled for. Lars isn't really that bad of a drummer. People just jump on this anti-Lars train because its the thing to do. He was right about Napster. Anybody who consistently downloads free music helped destroy the music industry.

I am sick of Slayer and Megadeth getting jabs in on each other as well as always bashing Metallica. I am also extremely sick of Slayer constantly slagging death metal. They have been doing it for yrs and last I checked C.I. and W.P.B. has a song on each release w/blast beats, yet they still can't give death metal credit, but they will continue to slag it. Grow the F up. Last I checked 2009 releases from Nile, Man Must Die, Squash Bowels, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Asphyx, with shoestring production budgets compared to Slayer, have their new cd's sounding 10x better than the new Slayer!!

go fuckin practice!! The man is right!! I am not the biggest fan of WPB, except for Psycopathy Red, but Lombardo probably knows how to get Lars excited again when it comes to drumming. And in the end of the day, the Metallica guys are Slayer fans to this day. If you don't believe me, check out the footage of them jamming Black Magic and Reign in Blood in Oberhausen, Germany.
While Ulrich always proved he can get his chops together if necessary, e.g. on S & M, but his recent efforts are often more than ridiculous. His skills got worse and worse after the 1996 tour.
I know more than 9 drummers who can play his stuff much more accurately than Lars himself. And that's not a good sign.
Like Jason put it in 2003: "He allowed to let his talents to wither away, so how could it sound like Entombed?"
@ JohnSDMF81: So you'd say that War Ensemble is not on the same level as let's say Battery? GROW THE FUCK UP!

Regardless of other peoples opinion on Lars' drumming the band put on a good show and they have a strong following. Its stupid how people try to compare him to other more technically proficient drummers i.e. Portnoy/Peart. That's what they do and this is what he does.
Slayer, with the shit they've put out trying to give advice to other metal bands is as good as listening to Justin Timberlake's views on the current metal scene.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Yes metallica as a whole were more talented than a lot of the thrash bands, slayer especially, but a prime example of a band having more musical talent than metallica would be megadeth. That band has for the most part been stocked with elite musicians [too bad dave's addictions couldn't keep them in the band]
It was more or less metallica's songwriting that set them apart. Remember, they were selling more than the other bands well before 1991

War Ensemble? You mean Raining Blood part 6? Come on how can you even compare that to Battery. You are out of your mind. I have nothing against Slayer, they are what they are, nothing great, but a good thrash metal band. They are nowhere near the likes of Megadeth or Metallica, because what made those 2 bands great was not only were they masters of thrash metal in the 80's ..they EVOLVED and showed they could do different types of metal/rock music as well. I bought "World Painted Blood" and it is ok, but it is also comical because it sounds EXACTLY like the rest of Slayers stuff. The funny thing is Dave continues to rip on Metallica and I would be surprised if James and Lars even remembered his name at this point.

Not you, DEAD SKIN MASK!
Look, man, MetallicA is the definition of HEAVY METAL Slayer is faster and somewhat more accentric, I call that THRASH. MetallicA usedto be, like this song, here CREEPING DEATH more thrashy once, but now lkess thrash and more standard bearers for straight up heavy metal. Just 'cause they play whole notes sometimes and being more melodic, hey they started it and they'll finish it. They aren't always picking super-fast though on the new LP. they do speed it up more than since Justice. I like Rob on Bass and think that he's really alot better, frankly he shows more anyway, than Tom does, not that Tom isn't better, he just lays down the low end e-string Bass style. In conclusion, They're both at the top of their games RIGHT NOW, I just wouldn't compare them as their approach is diff. enough to make that 'METAL' / 'THRASH' distinction a must. And you may think SLAYER is more cool, that's your opinion. I WILL SAY THAT IF YOU LIKED JUSTICE ON BACK, YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK MetallicA out as they are 'HOT' right now! Spend a night this weekend after listening to DIO, perhaps, and listen to DMag. It's not like LOAD-ST. ANGER. Actually, I like it more than the Black LP.
PEACE/HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Awesome that drum and bass was mentioned here.. Some real fresh drumming techniques can come from this genre.. take a look at jungle drummer kj sawka. I hope to hear more stuff like this in metal. Labels like Section 8 Recordings have some KILLER tunes that I think fit in well with the mood of metal. Artists like .. Current Value, SPL, Limewax, etc... you guys should search these things out!
