Guitarist MICKY MOODY Discusses His Departure From WHITESNAKE - Nov. 20, 2009
Greece's Rockpages webzine recently conducted an interview with original WHITESNAKE guitarist Micky Moody. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Rockpages: Did you feel a full member of WHITESNAKE or just a player in [vocalist] David Coverdale's band?

Micky: Full member, indeed. I wasn't getting the full money, but that's another story! The only time when I didn't feel a full member of WHITESNAKE was in 1982 when David asked me to rejoin the band. I had left in late 1981, because I had had enough of the business side of things.. anyway, when I returned, Cozy Powell and Mel Galley were in WHITESNAKE... great musicians, to say the least. But I kinda felt like a session guitar player in that lineup. We had a different management and the vibe was not the same, by any means. I don't blame David for this decision... We weren't making any money and he needed something better for his career. But, in that particular lineup, I was treated like a session player... it was all about David and Cozy. I didn't enjoy that period with WHITESNAKE.

Rockpages: Did you think that it was during that time that David was thinking of going into a more commercial direction?

Micky: Absolutely!

Rockpages: From your perspective, when exactly do you think he started having those thoughts?

Micky: I think right after the "Saints & Sinners" record. David started listening to a lot of American industry people... especially John David Kalodner from Geffen. This guy was ruthless and I'll tell you why... The last time that I played with WHITESNAKE was in October 1983. While I was playing... I think it was in Hamburg... John Kalodner was standing at the side of the stage and he was taking notes. I thought that "This is sinister... this is dark." By the end of the show, he went straight to David and he showed him the notes... It was obvious that John Kalodner did not think much of me. Here's a story after that incident... We were at a hotel in Germany... on the same tour... and David was sitting with John Sykes. Without any specific reason, he turned to me and he said, "Don't you ever turn your back at the audience during the show.". He said that in front of John Sykes and it was evident that Sykes was really embarrassed. I didn't say anything, but I remember thinking, "Fuck you!" I am sorry to tell you this, but this is the truth. He had embarrassed me in front of another musician, but David had already decided to bring John Sykes in the band. After the last gig in Belgium, I asked the tour manager to go and get all the members of WHITESNAKE in my room to announce my decision to leave the band. Everybody came in my room except Coverdale... Cozy — being a truly honest guy — said to me, "Good decision!" Jon Lord started crying... 'cause Jon is always very emotional. A week later, David called me and said, "Oh, you're leaving the band..." That's the story, guys!

Are the most important guitar players WS hae. Without them there's no Here I Go again or Fool for your loving. He is an absolutely class act and a great songwritter too.

For the young generation he is not that popular but for anybody who cares about what was the real whitesnake, Moody along with Murray, Marsden, Powell, Paice, Lord and Galley means a lot.

As far like David voice (the old David) he is a prick and his ego has turned the band a joke

...old WS albums were classics, Trouble, Lovehunter, R&W...great stuff! And the live album (which featured Mickey + Bernie Marsden...RIP) was classic too.

When he first joined Deep Purple, they had to put him on a diet and told him to quit eating candy bars! Funny!

The S/T album was a great Hair Metal album, but that is all because of Sykes! Then of course Coverdale screwed him over too! Even burned his record deal for Blue Murder!

Live in the Heart of the City is a great live album though!!!

Very few serious rock music fans respect Whitesnake these days, which is sad, because they started out as an extremely good British rock band. In fact, all their early albums were produced by the legendary Martin Birch. After Deep Purple went on hiatus, they filled the void--and coincidentally, went to shit as Deep Purple reunited. Moody and Marsden were one of the great guitar duos of the seventies. It's too bad that so many people now talk shit about their former band, not realizing the extent of their true musical legacy.

Turning your back on the crowd is very unprofessional. Fuck him.
David is a gentleman and a class act as well as being one of rocks best voices in history.

I knew that this was great when I first heard it. Ready and Willing was the only complete masterpiece that Whitesnake came out with. Thank you Purple members and Moody and Marsden.

Sometimes a player needs to have an eye contact with the rest of the band (a drummer in the back of the stage) and the road crew too.

Some guys aren't Steve Vai or Malmsteen and likes to have fun more than be under the spotlight all the time. Mick Moody was one of them. I saw other famous guys do the same turnin' their backs while they do a solo or something.

The fact is David "Coverdiva" became a MTV fan. In that time, if you wanted to make money, you have to look like Cher. And Moody is the one that would never accept this shit

BTW Kalodiner is also responsible for a more commercial direction in Aerosmith and Journey carreer, in other words he was "the midas" of pop rock bands in the late 80s along with Bob Rock and Mutt Lange we have to "thank" these assholes that turned good rock bands into a piece of shit

WS with Moody was the best era, those days bands could easily turn their back on hard rockin Europe , go commercial and make money in the USofA, now they come crawling back cuz there's no $$$ overthere for hard rock.
Coverdale's voice is totaly screwed now.. I felt sorry for him last time I saw WS...

nothing wrong with turning your back on the crowd.
sometimes you have to adjust your amp, sometimes you wanna make faces at the drummer. other times you wanna puke.
singers turn their back on crowds as well...it can be used
to build a little suspense.

Sykes´ tme was actually great (mainly the Slide it in tour), but the records with Moody were the best. The last 20 years of Whitesnake are a far cry compared to the previous. DC will end up singing like Cindy Lauper.
