DEE SNIDER Talks About 'Taking Back The Horns'; Audio Available - Nov. 24, 2009
Bulgaria's Tangra Mega Rock recently conducted an interview with TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider. The chat is now available for streaming using the audio player below.

Motivated by what he calls the "systematic abuse" of the metal horns, Snider has launched a web site dedicated to the reclamation of our iconic heavy metal symbol, TakeBackTheHorns.com.

"The rampant misuse and overuse of the metal horns is an insult to true fans of the music form it represents," says Dee, "They were never intended to be thrown by members of the hip hop, country and pop communities. We fought long and hard for the music we love to be recognized. They have no right to use our sign!"

While absolutely recognizing the humor in the situation, TakeBackTheHorns.com is dedicated to not only raise awareness of this abuse, but the site has been designed to inform and educate the reader on the history and proper use of the metal horns. Dee Snider hopes it will unify the massive, heavy metal community in the fight to stop the metal horns' further exploitation and degradation. Says Dee, "I appreciate the appeal of throwing the horns and even acknowledge that its overuse shows just how far the acceptance of heavy metal has come as a music form. But when little Johnny throws the horns to his mom because he's successfully made a number two, things have gone way too far."

TakeBackTheHorns.com also contains a section for visitors to post photos of abusers of the horns and an interactive "Metal or Not" rating system to help define and decide the proper usage of the iconic symbol. ??

Dee goes on to say, "In the '80s, I went to Washington, D.C. to defend heavy metal and fight censorship. Now it's time for me to defend the music I love again and fight a very different enemy. I need headbangers the world over to join me in this important fight. Let's say to the purveyors of other music forms, the usurpers of our mark...get your own damn sign bee-otch! Let's take back the horns...dot com!"

I'm glad that this campaign is for shits n giggles. I mean seriously, the damage has already been done since the late '80's-early '90's.

Plus, throwing up the horns is played out anyway.

I was working at a Daughtry concert and saw this chick in the audience jumping around and throwing the horns. I was insulted.

Dee Snyder has always looked out for metal and its fans.I think its awesome he made this website.I myself have seen people throw the horns up and not even know what it means. And anyone who says throwing up the horns is played out must not be a true metal-head.

You don't have to be a true metalhead to throw up the horns. It meant something in the '80's, these days pnly posers do it.

No the black man did not invent rock and roll. Enough of that idiocy. I'm tired of the argument. Rock came from blues. Blues came from country. So on and so on. Until we get a cro mag banging on a rock.

As I recall Hank wanted to learn to play the blues, which means that the blues would have to predate country.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the progression looks something like this:

slave spirituals>the blues>country>rock 'n' roll>The Beatles>Black Sabbath>...

Well, nothing really matters past Sabbath, does it?

Rock evolved from blues.

Metal evolved from JAZZ.

Believe it.

I care. Yes, really.

I care because I think it's important to understand the history of things. That's partially because I like knowing a lot of things -- I'm one motherfucker of a contender when it comes to Trivial Pursuit, but it's also because knowing the history helps us better understand the present.
It's important to understand the present; otherwise you're just another ignorant loudmouthed Blabberfuck.

Does that answer suffice?

Metal pretty much went extinct for a while after Pantera came out, there ain't a band out there that could compete. All the really good metal acts are older and some are putting out good albums but the bands like Lame of God, and Chmura, or whatever just can't even hold a candle to Slayer, Pantera, Venom and the list goes on. Maybe the horns will come back but it's gotta be for a band worthwhile.

kinda telling that the guy makin a big deal of this nuthing thing is the singer of a band who played for years before releasing a very good metal lp independantly, then got worse and worse with each lp as they catered to the 3rd grade crowd (we're not gonna take it, I wanna rock) and now only do Christmas shows.

All shadow and no substance.

There are many records from the 20's to prove it? And you know this because you were a teenager in the 1920's and bought all these records when they first came out or the LIBERAL MEDIA told you so.

You can't possibly be fucking serious with that. Really.
You're going to say that the "liberal media" invented a black-agenda time machine to go back to the 20's and record music?
Yeah, that's plausible.

It's about time. As far as the "liberal media is concerned" don't you mean corporate media? there is no liberal media anymore, besides mother jones, and a couple or a few haldfuls of publications and blogs and sometimes the Huffpost. If you mean CNN, MSNBC, FauX "news", or national newspapers, you're an idiot. These companies battle for their hidden agendas as well as your other corporate overlords. Now that sounds like a dick you'd love to suck!

There actually is one major liberal media outlet left: National Public Radio. But, then again, NPR's voice is heard as much as a silent fart at a Slayer show.
