RONNIE JAMES DIO Diagnosed With Stomach Cancer - Nov. 25, 2009

Wendy Dio, the wife and manager of legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW), has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:

"Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans.

"Long live rock and roll, long live Ronnie James Dio.

"Thanks to all the friends and fans from all over the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up."

Ronnie James Dio, 67, has performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects include the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He is currently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also includes former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.

DIO cancelled its European tour last week after Ronnie was taken ill. The band's lineup for the trek was supposed to include WHITESNAKE/ex-DIO axeman Doug Aldrich due to the fact that the group's regular guitarist, Craig Goldy, had prior touring commitments with BUDGIE in Australia.

DIO's last release was the "Holy Diver Live" CD, featuring a performance of the classic "Holy Diver" album in its entirety, from start to finish, recorded live for the very first time in 2005 in front of a sold-out London crowd.

	This is ju wrong in so many ways. This beast took both my folks and has taken a few more in my surroundings. I myself has had a battle with cancer but i had the fortune of coming out on top. To read that my childhood hero (and current) has been devoured by this beast is just horrible to read. With love in my heart and a prayer in my head you mr Dio is with me always. We will pray for you until the beast is gone. As a fellow singer once sang "United we stand, United we never shall fall." As long as we all pitch in we will win. 	When i logged on to Blabbermouth and saw this thread tears swelled my eyes. I started to cry immediatly. Ronnie is my favorite of all time, ive had the privelege of meeting this iconic figure and what an extreme gentleman he was. I cant believe that i would ever have to write a post like this one. 	Dio has one of my favorite voices in all of music and is the only person other than Ozzy that I acknowledge as a singer in Black Sabbath, although I call everything after Ozzy "Tony Iommi's Black Sabbath." 	Horns up Dio. Hopefully it was caught in time. While I am not fully familiar with the catalogue/history, what I have heard and the couple Sabbath discs I have, all I can say is stellar. One of those unique voices that can't be immitated. I know it's one of the often played songs, but Holy Diver is flippin amazing. KSE should be shunned for attempting to cover that song. 	I have had the good fortune of meeting you a few times and it has always been a great experience. You are the first person I ever saw in concert on the Last In Line tour in 1984 here at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island , NY. 	heartbreaking........ as a fan i have almost as strong of feelings as though he is almost a member of my family although i dont even know him. i feel this way about a few of my very favorites. i'm sure its hard as a artist to understand . there are 3 mayo clinics. one in my state of mn. ronnie IS ready for many more years of music as other artists his age retire. i really appreciate that and wait for his return.. saw him almost every 2 years here whenever he came . than he only came in 01 for ktd and 06 for h&h. really missed seeing him live.......... just keep thinking postitive ronnie and wendy and dont ever lose hope..

	Wow...... I've never been the type to shed a tear for someone I don't even know, and as much as I haven't shed any tears this news hit me like a right hook to the jaw. Dio, and more specifically the music he has made, has had a huge impact on my life and the thought of there being no Dio in the world..... I shudder just thinking about it. Holy Diver was the first metal album I fell in love with, at the age of eleven, and it pretty much shaped the next eight years or so of my life. That album has a magic to it, and is so close to me that the idea of the man behind it fighting for his life..... shocking to say the least. Thank god it looks like he's going to beat this thing, hell, it IS Dio after all so I KNOW he'll beat this thing, but hearing this really made me think about the importance of this man to the genre we all love. Long live DIO, one of the true metal Gods! I'm sure he'll come back to us. He has to.

	I am deeply, deeply saddened by this news. I have been a fan of Dio since hearing Rainbow's Rising album in 1981 and have followed him through Sabbath, Dio, Heaven and Hell and backtracked to Elf. I've been listening to your stellar voice and positive lyrics since I was 11 years old, for 29 years now and counting! I honestly can't think of a time when your positive musical influence hasn't been in my life. 	this is just horrible. dio is one of my favorite musicians. when i read this article i seriously began crying. it's like i just heard that one of my closest family members was diagnosed with cancer. i've grown up with dio's music. to lose him would be like losing a part of myself.
