RONNIE JAMES DIO Is 'Ready To Do What He Has To Do And Get Back On Stage'

Eddie Trunk, co-host of the VH1 Classic television program "That Metal Show" who has a long-running radio show, "Friday Night Rocks", on New York's Q104.3 FM, has posted the following message on his official web site: "Just hung up the phone with both Wendy Dio and Ronnie James Dio himself. "Obviously, the news was just released about Ronnie having stomach cancer. I was aware of this a number of days ago, but did not say anything public until Ronnie's camp was ready to release the news. "As I have said in the past, Ronnie has always been one of my closest friends and biggest supporters over the many years we have worked together doing various things. We have a friendship far beyond just music and he being a musician and me being a host. So I have been in a knot over this news when I was first told about it around a week ago. "The results of the many tests he has had were made known yesterday, so now he knows exactly what he is dealing with and will soon find out the course of action. The GREAT news is that it did not spread and is in an early stage! "I just hung up with him and he sounded great. The usual RJD, totally commited to 'killing the dragon,' and he will! He is not in pain, sounded great, and was ready to do what he has to do and get back on stage and sing like only he can! "It was great to have spent about 20 minutes on the phone with him and hear how positive he was and thankful for all the support from his many fans. He's already made a few changes to his diet that he said has helped him feel great and admitted his days of having a few drinks are mostl likely behind him. "I will share what I can when I can, but know Ronnie is ready to fight and win, and anyone who knows the man knows he will succeed! "Let's all continue to keep him in our thoughts and prayers going forward for a speedy recovery. Yes, Ronnie is a great singer and icon for the music we love, but he is an even better person and I know he will beat this!" Pictured below is Eddie Trunk with Ronnie James Dio.

I am so sad to hear this news...was just rockin' out to Dio when I saw this online...you ARE metal royalty, as has already been said, and one of my top three fave (others being Dickinson and Halford)...
Am I just being cynical, or does Eddie Trunk sound overly preoccupied with establishing his RJD "cred" in his statement? Maybe it's cause I hate Eddie Trunk, but some of the way his remarks are phrased sound more concerned with establishing that he's great pals with Dio than about supporting him.
If I'm off base, let me know...like I said, I'm probably biased against the guy from the getgo.

Just to let you know; I was sitting with 3 other metalheads in a bar one night and we were making lists of our top 5 guitar players, our top 5 bass players etc. Out of all the lists we did there was only one person that everyone had on their list. That was on the top 5 vocalist list; Ronnie James Dio!

I recall the first time I heard his voice on a Mob Rules LP I was 13 years old (now I'm 37)
Since that day he is the one of my heroes along with Sabbath, Deep Purple & Rainbow guys

Dio, we know you can pull this off. I truly, truly hope that you will kill this dragon. You've been killing dragons for years, in many different ways, and "early stages of stomach cancer" is no fucking different. It is just another beast for you to slay. If anyone can beat this, I believe you can. And honestly, I really think you can pull it off. Knowing you, you will blow through whatever treatment as well (probably toke your way through it, as you have been known in the past to use the good old green herb respectfully). But whatever. Whatever it takes, please kill this beast.
I think about you every single day and hope all the best. You are such a huge part of my life and have been for so long now. For me, you are the tip of the rock and roll sword, and a great human being. Thank you so much for everything that you have given us, and will give us. I'm looking on the bright side here, at least you have been able to read a bunch of fan mail! Choir666Of666Satan I have a friend who is a cancer survivor. You have to understand they said it was found early. The thing with stomach cancer is a large amount of people who have it do NOT detect it right away. There is not a lot of symptoms in the early stages from what I understand. I don't have a clue what caused him to go in but I'm very glad it was caught early. I too have lost family and friends to cancer. But when caught early there's much hope. Focus on seeing him well my friend. People do survive.

God I hope he pulls through this. A close pal of mine had stomach cancer, and mercifully came out the better side so I hope Ronnie can too.
Ronnie James Dio has been a hero of mine ever since I first heard his incredible voice back in 1980. I was only a nipper, but immediately I was in awe of this majestic voice. I grew up listening to Ronnie and his work with Sabbath is just mind-blowing. It took years for me to finally see the great man in concert. Wow! I never got to meet Ronnie (despite hanging around a few stage doors) but on the first Heaven and Hell tour I managed to throw an Irish flag up onstage at Nottingham which he unfurled, and then asked to keep! I was made up.
Little was I to know that when I got married two months ago, my best man - my brother - had gotten in touch with Ronnie's people and incredibly, the main man himself sent me a message of good luck, which my brother read out on my wedding day! It was the coolest thing that has EVER happened to me. Even meeting all the guys from Pink Floyd paled in insignificance to this - a message from the King. And not just an ordinary message, but a goodwill greeting to my wife and I! Well, it made our day, and got our marriage off to a great start. We felt we had been blessed! If we can be as happy as Ronnie and Wendy are then we're halfway to eternal happiness.
I pray that Ronnie gets through this and is back on stage soon. He has the strength and power, and he has all our best wishes.

I just found out about Ronnie's condition and while any sort of cancer is awful, at least it seems that they found it early!
I had a ticket to see Dio on Saturday 21/11 and was obviously disappointed when it was cancelled, but devastated when I heard that RJD was in hospital! The fact that not only the date but the entire tour was cancelled and not re-scheduled meant it was obvious something serious was wrong!
I think I speak for all of the fans who had tickets when I say to Ronnie, please dont give the cancellation a second thought and please just concentrate on getting well!
I look forward to seeing you on stage soon and giving you the salute!

I agree. Trunk is classic for name-dropping (and story telling) and seems like he NEEDS to tell everyone that he knew of Ronnie's illness BEFORE everyone else. Like he was the first person Wendy and RJD called when they got the news.....

More people survive from stomach cancer than the one's that don't, when caught in this stage (localized).
THE STATS POSTED BY Choir666Of666Satan ARE NOT CORRECT!!
Those stats were OVERALL numbers for EVERYONE who has had stomach cancer, not more specific stats for specific stages of the cancer.
It has not spread, therefore Ronnie's chances are fairly good.
Let's all continue to be positive and show support.

I believe the cure rate for white males is about 60% in that stage.

Ronnie is a true class act who has made a permanent mark on the entire genre of hard rock and metal. There are few in any industry that are living legends. In the realm of hard rock music, Ronnie James Dio clearly stands above the rest.
I've admired his lyrics and songwriting from the first time I heard Man on the Silver Mountain in the 70s and Dio is the force behind arguably three of the greatest masterpieces in rock history – Rainbow's Rising, Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell and, of course, Dio's Holy Diver.
From the opening note to closing encore, Ronnie James Dio is larger than life on stage with a commanding presence, which continues to this day. While others half of Ronnie's age lost what little they had during their 15 minutes of fame, Dio still delivers the goods well into his 50 plus years on stage.
I've had the pleasure (and I do mean pleasure) of seeing him live maybe 15 times and have never been disappointed. And of course, Ronnie is gracious and accommodating to all of his fans. I couldn't believe how long he spent with me after a show once in Indianapolis... I kept saying, "there are others in line...I should move on" and he responded with a smile, "it's OK, Steve. I'll stick around and meet with them, too." Amazing when you think of his status in the music industry.
BTW Ronnie: I still have that old Rainbow Bar and Grill wine list! ("Welcome to the Rainbow Bar and Grill. Land of Fruits and Nuts...")
In life, we all meet people that have that certain "it", a commanding charm or calming presence that makes you like being around them. It's rare when that person happens to be someone you admire from afar. Movie stars, rock stars, athletes, politicians... more often than not there is an heir of hierarchy or attitude of entitlement. Not Ronnie James Dio.
To Ronnie and Wendy; stay strong and positive. There are legions of people out here sending positive vibes to you both. Finally, just remember that karma is a good thing... you have nothing to fear.

I have been a huge fan of Ronnie's for 30 years now. I have seen him in concert at leats a dozen times. Whenever I was down and needed some "picking up" I would always blast some Dio and I always felt better...still do to this day! My children now are loving Bible Black! Statistics don't mean shit. EVERYONE reacts to disease differently and has a different will to overcome.
My aunt had like stage four Hodgkins (lymph cancer - you're basically fucked) and probably had like a 5% chance at survival.
That was 20 years ago and she is still here.

His music has been a touchstone throughout my life, and I finally saw him live last year. We're not even THINKING of saying goodbye to that power and vitality, that musical genius and dedication.

Arguably the best voice in metal history and Ronnie has not stopped making music, rockin' in his entire career. I have seen him solo and with Sabbath roughly 20 times and METAL without RONNIE is like the NFL without the Steelers. The day Ronnie retires or is not performing live on stage anymore will truly be a sad day in metal. I have nothing but respect for this man.
His voice has not wavered in 30 years!
