PAUL STANLEY: 'If You Win The Lottery, You Don't Complain About The Taxes' - Nov. 28, 2009
John Katsilometes of the Las Vegas Sun recently conducted an interview with KISS guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Las Vegas Sun: You've set a standard for production that really changed how concerts are staged, and now a lot of bands are using pyrotechnics and costumes onstage. How do you continue to stay ahead of the curve in your live show?

Stanley: We've inspired a lot of bands, sure. Everybody is borrowing from us, but they will never be us. It only takes money to have a KISS-type show, but you will never have KISS. I'm flattered by all the mimicry, the bands who have borrowed from us. To me, we just have to keep doing what we've been doing and continue to be musically great.

Las Vegas Sun: You've said many times that this is the best version of KISS (with co-founder Gene Simmons on bass, Tommy Thayer on guitar and Eric Singer on drums) ever.

Stanley: Totally. A night doesn't go by that we are not consistently in top form. We've now got four people who are all saying, "How can we make the band more famous?" instead of, "How can I make me more famous?"

Las Vegas Sun: You've talked before, during the "Psycho Circus" reunion project with Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, that it was difficult to work in the studio with attorneys instead of musicians.

Stanley: Yeah, if only attorneys could sing and play instruments, we'd have been a better band. But Eric has been with us for 18 years now, Tommy has been in the band for seven years and around us forever (as a onetime member of the band BLACK 'N BLUE and a KISS tribute band who became an assistant to the band and helped Frehley re-learn some of his solos for the "Psycho Circus" reunion-farewell tour). We're a great band.

Las Vegas Sun: I would be remiss not to ask you about wearing makeup. After 35 years, hasn't it become an inconvenience to still have to wear that when you perform?

Stanley: I liken it to putting on my war paint. When you go to fight, you want to be in your best possible form. … It would be like going into the Super Bowl without the right equipment or the World Series. … I don't know — I'm stammering here, because this is a big part of what makes us who we are. The idea of it being an inconvenience doesn't play into this. At the very least I would say, if you win the lottery, you don't complain about the taxes. When you've been as lucky as we are, there's not much to complain about.

Can't be bothered.

Yesterday I purchased one (1) ticket to Kiss in Arnhem for €70, not for me but for a friend of mine.

There was a time that I swore that I never would pay more than 100 guilders (€50,-) for any band, but that is a long time ago.

I was at Cobo Hall the night the tour started... 11nth row center.. Pauls voice was obviously strained ( actually, so was the dude from Buckcherry, but no one cares as much I guess )... anyway, I also heard him on his "Live to Win" solo tour in LA... and he sounded AMAZING that night (and subsequent nights, via You Tube).

Anyway, I have listened to many downloads since then... And I would conclude.. get this... I know it is shocking....

He probably had a cold.

OMG... and instead of cancelling everything... he worked through it... ever have one? Its happened to me too... and I sing in a band.... it happens. (even to those who don't sing)..

I know... hard to believe.

Anyway, I also listened to the facebook live show... he sounds a hell of alot better than he was at first... but he STILL put on a hell of a show on night one....even if he was struggling vocally.

But here is a clue....

He probably doesn't worry about the opinions of a bunch of Rotting Christ fans who don't know what a platinum album looks like who "bitch" because "KISS IS OLD AND DONE".... Get a grip...
Best Line Up EVER..... BEST sounding overall..... Best Chart position of their career... best tour in 35 years.... and one HELL of a great album...

If thats failure... count me in.

BTW... How did Slayers new CD chart?

I thought so.

As a die hard fan of the genre that includes Kiss, I wouldn't bank an argument for on the song writing quality of Sonic Boom. Their lead off single, Modern Day Delilah, to me, just comes off as a failed attempt at re-creating the anthemic energy and excitement of let's say a Rock n' Roll All Night, Heaven's on Fire or a Detroit Rock City. The voice solo "prowess" demonstrated by Paul, holding that falsetto note before or after the solo is fucking horrible, the chorus is flat and I fuckin' hate it so much that I have yet to bother with the rest of the album.

A band who's creative well has been dry since "Revenge". What more can I say? I miss Kiss.

People still going with the "Paul Stanley has a cold" excuse. Get over it dudes. He's much older and he used his voice HARD for many years. The range is gone. Just like Robert Plant. No shame in saying it and there's no need to cover for the man. If personally you can handle the way his voice sounds now then good for you but don't get all puffy chested when someone like me dislikes it.

Right now the two best links in the live KISS chain are Tommy and Eric simply because of age. Rock & Roll at it's core is a young mans game.

And I'll say again for the 1000th time...Sonic Boom is not that great of an album by KISS standards. It's not one of their worst but it's not one of their best either.

I've got their Double Platinum hits album and that's all I need. Even though I don't call myself a fan, I acknowledge and respect what they did for Rock. Without their "boring" riffs in the 70s we wouldn't even have a lot of the Rock/Metal bands that formed in the following years. Besides, they have a name and a legacy that allows them to make money off of everything they do. Just about everybody here would give their left nut to be able to say that about something they created. I have to give credit where credit is due. They may be past their prime or whatever, but they are marketing geniuses. I think now they are still doing this because:
1. They can still release an album and merchandising around it and make millions, and tour without being on the county fair circuit.
2. They must still enjoy playing music, because the whole world knows they don't and never will NEED the money.

Not many older bands can say any of that, and all of the ones who can't wish they could.

Who is the idiot who actually brought Slayer into a KISS thread?
I will give them credit where credit is due, KISS changed the way live music is presented....but Slayer changed the face of metal. So which is better? Well, if music were only about theatrics, we would have to go with KISS. But if you are talking about musical integrity....clearly it is Slayer. Say what you will about Slayer, but they have done more for their metal than KISS has done for rock. In fact, many "rockers" laugh at KISS because of the lack of musical integrity....I mean how can you take a band seriously when they have lyrics like "Uh all night"
Face it, although KISS is not my cup of tea and Slayer is not yours, you cannot bring up album sales when the two bands you are comparing have a different appeal to different people. KISS is a gimicky "band" and Paul has always had a back up keyboardist emulating his guitar work because he can't really sing and perform at the same time. This to me is the equivalent of Janet Jackson lip synching her concerts....so sure, the new KISS outsold the new Slayer, congrats....KISS is and always has been about making dolls, caskets, crappy videos, a horrible movie, tooth brushes, etc. KISS is unfortunately not so much about the music any more and more about the merchandise.

What does all this have in common? It all sounds great. I like Kiss I like Slayer I like Obituary, I like Billy Idol, I like Bad Brains, Shit Fishbone, INXS, Pantera, Mayhem, Bathory, fucking christ! I even like Sisters of Mercy. The list goes on. What band is better, what album is better? You know what? Who cares. I don't. When a band pulls a 360 and starts playing an entirely different form of music, and I won't name names but their initials are METALLICA, then I have a problem. However DM is back to roots...or at least enough for me so Metallica is back on the radar. So Sonic Boom may or may not be the "best", if you are a kiss fan then you are a kiss fan and Kiss is the Best, they say so. Its not like they released another disco album. Its a fucking Rock album like any other they have released in the past. And guess what Flat solos and flat voices don't mean shit, they are out there doing what we wish we could do and hell point made they are doing it. Living the life. Same goes for Slayer and Testament, Overkill, Anthrax, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Priest, Fugazi, Robert Plant, Jimmy Paige, Ozzy, Black Sabbath Dio, Aerosmith.....well sort of, and anyone else that falls into realm of Hard Rock Heavy Metal Thrash Metal Punk, MetalCore Death Metal Black Metal Hardcore Grindcore and so on. stop being a bitch. Cry about some real issues if you're gonna cry about anything and realize these bands make music. Hell if I know most musicians, songs they wrote ten years ago would sound completely different if they waited and recorded them today. Lots of musicians, would like to rerecord a few oldies, with different ideas (riffs, melodies and such). So basically Enjoy what is out there, and if you don.t like the newer shit, awesome one extra concert ticket for me. I'm sorry did I come off too harsh. No hard feelings.

Um, no KISS is not who influenced most metal bands, it was Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, who both formed before KISS. KISS is no longer my cup of tea admittedly, I come into KISS threads for nostalgia, which is why I saw them on the reunion tour. Upon reading someones post, I saw they actually compared album sales of Slayer and KISS, which is absolutely pointless. Which you would have seen if you actually read the post. I have seen KISS only 3 times, far below many of you, I am sure, but I think that gives me a right to not only read threads based on this band, but also to defend another band that I have seen 17 times. Slayer is my favorite band, rather you like them or not, I couldn't care less, but don't bash on thrash/death metal bands and make false claims. Both Kerry and Jeff have said they do not like KISS, but I am sure you know more about their influences than they do.

Kiss "invented" the stage show. Its like thinking the Rolling Stones invented the blues or Green Day invented punk. They merely ripped everything off from those who came before them and presented it in a more palatable, commercial format.

If Kiss go down in the annals of rock history for anything, it will be because they are shrewd businessmen--not because they contributed anything original to rock 'n roll. They lifted everything they know from the likes of Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Slade, and especially the New York Dolls.

Know your rock history, buddy.

What you said is true however KISS took the stage show to a new level. Like them or not you have to admit that. I agree with you but KISS will also be remembered for their larger than life stage show of the 70's. Let's face it. They out did Cooper and everyone else in that department. They may not have invented it but they perfected it and "sold" it out to everyone all over the world.

ace and peter are finished !!! 30 years of drugs and destroyed there motor functions, and they are unable to play at a professional level..
firstly people complain that eric plays drum fills different, so what ?? he adds his own feel into it..peter couldnt even play his own fills live either with out struggling. as for ace ( king of fuck ups ) you only have to view kissology vol 3 too see what a pathetic piece of work he has become..tommy does ace better than ace and the fans know it...thats why numbers are through the roof !!!
as for pauls voice, well he is close to 60 and all the old rock stars can no longer do what they use to, BUT, paul still does a good show and gives the fans there money worth!!..this line up is musically the best there ever was in terms of " classic kiss " im not talking about 80's or 90's...if the original line up was together then kiss wouldnt sound this good !! watch the reunion or phyco circus footage, ace and peter were fucking HORRIBLE !!!!!!

just like the rolling stones or other older artist kiss are still performing at a awsome level and still giving the die hard fans what they want, all you have to do is look at the concert sales too see that...if you dont like this line up, then you just didnt like classic kiss, because in 2009, this is the closest anyone can get to the magic kiss had in the 70's..

so enjoy it if you will, if you dont then, i hear culture club are reforming :)

Gotta say, wrong about ACE. Right now, he is fine. saw him in NY 2X in the last two years, and he is ripping. As for the numbers throught the roof, well, just not fully correct. Sonic Boom hit number 2, which is great. Hoped for a #1, but didn't happen. HOWEVER, the cd is not gold yet after a month. Early albums shipped platinum. The tour is doing REALLY great outside the US, but not as well in the US. The tour is not selling out in areas. Long Island was NOT sold out. MSG took over a month to sell out. In the past, they could do several nights and sell them ut in less than an hour.

So putting it in perspective, the numbers are good, but not as good as in the past, with the original lineup.

kiss current usa tour is selling fine..as i pointed out to haymaker a post ago that alive35 tour has a higher pershow average than any other kiss tour ever !!! in the 70's they averaged 13 550 per show, then in the reunion tour it was a little higher...this tour its over 15k per show....kiss alive 35 tour is the biggest one they ever did, and even the american leg was good, they sold out pretty much every show, and the shows that wernt sold out were very close too it....

to say ace is fine is a joke, he is like ozzy osbourne, 30 years of drinking and snorting doesnt do ur health well...ive watched many clips on utube and he is as sloppy as ever...

This thread is ridiculous. No wonder the "normal world" thinks hard rock/metal fans are knuckle dragging troglodytes.

Leave it to KISS to bring out the best (and worst) in people!

Bognerboy, you posted above that "in the 70's (KISS) averaged 13 550 per show" - I doubt that number is accurate, unless of course you're counting the shows in the very early days where KISS was playing places like the Daisy (in Long Island, NY), or the Popcorn Club in NYC. KISS filled every major stadium and arena from pretty much 1977 on. Even the shows at Cobo Hall (recorded for Alive in '75) were for about 20,000 each! I would wager that from 1976-77 on through about 1982, KISS never played a show at a venue LESS thank 13,550!

This is not to take away from any success KISS has had since. The Reunion Tour was, I believe, the highest grossing tour of that year. I think Alive 35 is doing (or did) well, but it was nothing even close to KISS back in "the day". Again, it's clear that there is still an audience for the current incarceration of KISS, but it will never be like it was.

The whole Ace/Peter versus Tommy/Eric debate is stupid. There are was more fans of the classic line-up than there are of the new line-up. That's just a fact. But why does everyone get their shirts in a knot when this is stated? Who cares? Some of us prefer classic KISS, some prefer the new KISS. It's all KISS! Just because one was a bigger seller doesn't mean it's better! I'm sure most of you realize that an "artist" like Britney Spears has sold millions and millions of records worldwide. Does that make her better than a band like KISS?

kiss will never be as big as they were in the 70's..true
but.....
what i been saying all along is this line up is the closest anyone will get to classic kiss...not even with ace or peter because they both finished..
this current line up has the sound, tightness and pure energy to recreate that 70's feel...sales in the usa are not poor, they have been selling out almost every show ??? im not sure were u get ur facts from....and as for the per show average, go to wikapedia, type in kiss, scroll down to the 1977 section of the bio, there it tells you there average per show count till that point...13 550, or somewhere around that...all im saying is this current line up is damn close to the best kiss you will see...original or not, no one can get closer !!!

Wikipedia is done by volunteers and is generally not verified. I do know, from living in NY, that past tours sold out MSG MUCH faster than this tour. 77 shows sold out 1st day. Dynasty tour sold out 2 nights in a day, as well as one in Long Island. Unmasked sold out Palladium, a small theater, in 10 minutes. (Great show, Eric C's first.)CON didn't make it to NYC. Had to see upstate. LIU sold out 2 nights at Radio City in a few hours, but that is a smaller venue. Animalize sold out Long Island and NJ in a few hours. Asylum sold out one night at MSG and one in NJ. Crazy Nights sold out NJ, LI and two nights at the Ritz, a club. (great show.) HITS sold out all three NY area stadiums, with the last show at MSG sadly being Eric C's last show. For Revenge, they played 2 club shows Ritz and Warehouse. (Great shows!!) Then then sold out NJ and LI.

THEN the original lineup reunited. $ nights at MSG sold out in a few hours. They came back later that tour for two more sold out nights at NJ and LI. PC did one sold out show at each of the NY area arenas, MSG, NJ (New years eve - GREAT) and LI. Farewell did two sold out in NJ, and two sold out in LI, but at Jones Beach, a smaller Arena. Further tours did one night at Jones Beach, including the one with Aerosmith. THIS tour, touted as the BIGGEST did one NOT sold out night in LI, a night at MSG that took a month to sell out and NO NJ show.

So, I am not sure Wikipedia is correct, at least not in the NY area. In addition, if you look at tour dates, the Reunion tour seems to be the BIGGEST tour, with multiple dates in most markets.

yes true..they do need younger memebers like zepplin needed john bonhams son to fill in..tommy and eric are more classic sounding than ace or peter...
people who deny it are denying what kiss is about!!
when 2 members choose drugs over there fans and the band, then those 2 need to go, thats where tommy and eric fit in, fit amazing muso's who can do the job better than the originals !!!

as i have mentioned in many post alive 35 sales have SURPASSED reunion sales..reason being people love this fresh version of kiss..musically spot on and putting on a great show..

SHOW me post Alive 35 Sales that surpasses any reunion sales. Just untrue. Check out the post by gigantor. I was also at those shows. How can ONE night at MSG on this tour be higher in sales that 4 nights on the reunion tour or even 2 on the Dynasty tour?

If you look at the book "Kiss Alive Forever: The Complete Touring History," you will see that many stops on the Reunion tour were multi-nighters, compared with one in most stops on this tour.

Where are you getting your numbers from?

Now I am not saying that KISS should retire if they don't want to, but despite the fact that the tour is doing well, the numbers in fact show that there are alot of disgruntled fans NOT happy with the new guys in makeup. I know alot of people who have skipped on KISS since they put Eric in the makeup. I would say the ratio, of people I know, is 2-1 in favor of NOT attending this lineups tours while they use the makeup. If you magnify those numbers statistically, the way many polls use their numbers, and you have the extra 2/3 nights that were said to have been reserved at MSG.

you got the wrong guy, I didn't say anything about how much or little they are selling on their tours. I haven't a clue, other than I heard in Boston it was 3/4 full. Its not gonna get as much attention or sales as the reunion tour I'd think though, I know myself and many others wouldn't care without at least Ace. I don't care if Tommy is clean & can play the parts better, so can a few tribute bands. They can sing better than Paul now too, but its not KiSS. that is the point I make.
