AEROSMITH's JOE PERRY To Singers: Send Tapes To My Manager
- Dec. 1, 2009
|
|
CNN conducted a short interview with AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry at the American Music Awards on November 22, 2009. Watch the chat below. AEROSMITH singer, Steven Tyler, joined Perry onstage in New York earlier this month while the latter was touring with his JOE PERRY PROJECT solo band, telling the crowd that he wasn't quitting AEROSMITH. "I said literally about 15 words to him when he sat in with me [at the New York concert]," Perry explained to CNN. "Other than that, the last time I talked to him was before the show in Sturgis [in early August]." Perry insisted that the rest of the band — Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer — want to keep the group on the road. "I think that you just have to listen to what's going on in the press. Because that's the only thing I know," he explained to MTV. "All I know is that the four guys want to work. I'm working with my band, playing the House of Blues all across the country. And we're rocking out and having a good time."

They'll probably end getting some tool like John Mayer to do it or steal someone from an Aerosmith tribute band.

JOE, SHUT THE FUCK UP!
OK, I couldn't say it nicely. But I lose more respect for Joe every time I hear from him lately.
First of all, the thought of replacing a force like Steven Tyler is idiotic - especially after 40 years. You could replace EVERY GUY in that band except Steve and still call it Aerosmith. That band has played gigs without every guy at one point or another except Steve - when Steve can't make it show gets cancelled. Why do you suppose that is?
Secondly, the guy just wants to take time off to do his own thing. I feel like if after 40 years the guy wants 2 years off that's reasonable - the rest of the band just have to suck it up and take a break, he's made them enough money (more cash that what comes in from the Joe Perry Project or Whitford/St.Holmes). You don't start insinuating he's back on drugs and you don't start saying he quit the band!
Third - despite what Perry keeps saying, the other four guys are HARDLY up to staying on the road. Let's review - Perry just got over knee surgery, Tom Hamilton had to sit out half of last tour dealing with cancer issues, and Brad Whitford sat out the other half. If ever there were guys who could do with some time off, it's Aerosmith!
I'm just so sick of hearing this bullshit. And to the guy who said they should do the 'Heaven and Hell' thing, there's a difference: Black Sabbath had a legendary singer who cut still cut it live that had a back catalog of beloved hits with the band. Aerosmith would be starting at zero with a guy who doesn't belong there (sort of like Velvet Revolver).

Do you know ANYTHING about music? Aeroemith are fucking legends for their first five albums (albums which inspired Run DMC who would rap over their stuff).
Granted they had a slump in the late 70's/early 80's, but they made a HUGE comeback. Yes, the Run DMC duet was helpful in that comeback, but it had more to do with the huge hits off their album Permanent Vacation in 1987 and that weasel John Kalodner steering their career very much in the right direction.
Love to hear Kalodner's take on Joe shooting his mouth off these days.

Aerosmith should get Scott Weiland to sing and then Steven Tyler should use the members of Velvet Revolver as a backing band and they should tour simultaneously and whoever sells more tickets gets to keep the band.

Joe is out of his mind if he thinks this will work.
Steven is being a fucking prick but he is irreplaceable at this point.
Either form a new band or wait for Steve to get his head screwed back on straight. This idea is doomed from the start.

You can't replace Steven Tyler and still call it Aerosmith.
Stephen Colbert did a really funny video about it:

I'm just gonna say that Joe is being a selfish prick. I'm not really a fan of the band by any means but I can say that without signature vocals from Steven this band is nothing at all. Mediocre music with a unique voice minus the unique voice, well ladies and gents, that equals a failure in the making. Why can't this little girl shut his mouth and quit trying to gain attention. Just take a look in the mirror, Joe. If you did a solo act, why should Steven not be able to do the same? Childish nonsense, and not just a one-time remark...over and over every day I see this crap. Let it rest, Joe, take a hint from the rest of the band and seal those lips. Because you're going to find out soon that without Steven, Aerosmith will fail miserably.

Do the heaven and hell gig....they will get away with it.....they may not be as huge as aerosmith, but look, if Steve is done, he's done, if he want's a break give it to him....Priest did it,....and they toured under judas priest, were they as big as with halford? no....but now they are bigger than ever.....Black Sabbath with Dio is my favorite sabbath, no matter what they call it....you've got some talent in aerosmith, maybe now they can write some rocking songs, maybe not....but don't be held hostage in bondage to some egomaniac......you've got money, you've got management....go for it....If tyler comes back, so be it.

you're right...and JP sounds like he's just doing this out of spite. Not saying I wouldn't be hurt, mad, let down, but keep it private, cuz things might blow over in the next couple months, Steven will come back & you look like a tool. If he doesn't come back, then at that point, reappear with a new plan...as soon as STeven hit the stage with Joe, he said "want to say blah blah about all te rumors of us breaking up". Rumors he started. He instantly was backing down.

You have a short list yet he wants some assclowns to send their demo tapes to his manager? Get a real fucking singer if your going to try to replace Steven Tyler. Show some fucking respect for the man and hire a competent replacement. On 2nd thought, wait for Tyler to clear his head and rejoin the band. Talk about 4 guys overestimating their abilities. Like someone above said, you could replace everyone except Steve Tyler and it would still be fucking AEROSMITH.

First off, he keeps going on and on (and on and on and on) about how "amazing" his Project vocalist is, that the guy's gonna blow everyone's socks off, bla bla bla. Are they *really* looking for a singer, or is he just saying this to kick Steven? Because it seems plain to me that if he really WAS looking for a singer, he'd just use that guy he keeps hyping.
Secondly, I'd love to see a picture of the "tapes" that get sent in to Joe's team, because I'm betting that the guy doesn't own a cassette player.

i'd enjoy seeing the members of aerosmith with a singer who could deliver the goods and wouldn't push the pop agenda on the songwriting.
my shortlist of 3 criminally underrated guys who can still sing circles around the majority of the rest of their 80's contemporaries to this day, have paid more than their fair share of dues and deserve the opportunity to front a band of aerosmith's caliber now that steven has decided to take them for granted after all this time:
jason mc master jizzy pearl john corabi
any of those guys would make a kickass old school aerosmith styled rock n roll album with the aero guys. do the heaven & hell thing and call it a different name, avoid the negative publicity and just put out a solid asskicking no bullshit rock n roll cd. i think a lot of people would enjoy hearing that, myself included. (another hint for joe & co: make sure it sounds absolutely nothing like chinese democracy and you're probably on the right track...)
meanwhile, steven can go work on his ill advised solo cd with timbaland or the matrix or linda perry or some shit like that.....plus he can market his "brand tyler" lines of viagra, replacement hips, dentures, rascal scooters, shamwows, snuggies and perhaps most importantly his signature line of life-alerts, since that will definitely come in handy the next time steven falls and can't get up.
eventually, the snakes that surround steven right now will make their money off of him and wander off after his solo album flops, he'll have a moment of clarity and realize he's been manipulated greatly and sober up.....which will of course pave the way for the giant moneymaking reunion/farewell/last hurrah tour.
i just hope the other guys are all still alive when that happens, and the same thing doesn't happen to them as what happened to pink floyd after gilmour turned down the chance to do a full blown tour with roger waters simply because he had a vanity solo record in the works at the time. unfortunately rick wright didn't live long enough to have that chance come around again......and sadly the robert plant/led zeppelin situation seems headed in the same direction.
anyway, hopefully steven pulls his head out of his ass and realizes that AEROSMITH, the band he's fronted for nearly 40 years - IS "brand tyler". but while he sorts that out i definitely support the other guys in aerosmith getting a great rock record out of their system with a deserving singer while they can.

As some guys have already said, there ain't no Aerosmith with ANY other singer, so let's forget about that lookin-for-a-substitute crap, no one would EVER match (by the way, why you guys mess so much with Scott Weiland?? Have you seen the guy in concert? He's awesome, he's a great rock front man, I'm sorry for Axl Rose lovers).
On the other hand, and as Steve Tyler said himself once "he's nothin' without me and I'm nothin' without him" (talkin' 'bout Joe Perry, of course). I coudn't agree more.
That's it, there's no point in discussing anymore. Let's just hope they may get along again, or it'll be the end of Aerosmith, period.
