But I don't listen to ONLY metal (and I suspect the same goes for most Blabbermouth readers), so who cares? I don't like evrything these guys chose, but so what? Variety is always good.

Well, the last decade, not much to do cartwheels over. I'm surprised they could even think of 25 albums. I completely disagree with Eminem, and that's just because I'm biased. And I completely agree with White Stripes. Which again, I'm biased.
Before this thread blows up to a Lars bashing, it's just musical taste. And to have diversified taste is healthy. All music is borrowed and influenced by something. Black Sabbath draws influence from the Beatles. So really, I have no problem with this list. Metal is my favorite, but I can't think of too many metal albums that I think are innovative and important in the last decade. Sure, there are good ones, but none that I've attached myself to, at least not for too long. I will listen to Elton John and Bruce Springsteen in the morning, and have In flames by the afternoon. So really?
Although, speaking of Bruce, I'm surprised neither of them considered Springsteen's "the Rising", that was a fantastic and memorable album. A rare gem these days.

Those guys are obviously out of great rock/metal music for last ten years (minimum)! I listen almost EVERYTHING (jazz, classic, 70's r'n'b, pop rock, punk, underground rap...) but my end-of-year/decade/century lists are always filled with rock/metal releases, because at the end of day it is music that I love with all my heart and soul! Some of best albums in this decade belongs to bands like Paradise Lost, Symphony X, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, Dream Theater, Jaded Heart, Amorphis, Children Of Bodom, Kamelot, Amon Amarth, Kreator... and list goes on!
Eminem, Arctic Monkeys, Pink, U2, Sean Paul, Kid Rock, Oasis, Outcast... = some of best albums in last decade? That's just sad...

Well, at least Lars Ulrich selected a Motörhead-album, so he hasn't completely forgotten about the (pre-)NWOBHM and thrash metal days. On the one hand, I don't mind their music choices at all. They've got a right to their own tastes, and personally I think that e.g. "Cleaning Out My Closet", "Get The Party Started", "Because I Got High" and "Beautiful Day" are cool songs.
On the other hand, if you're not into metal anymore and don't need the money, then why are you still playing in a metal band? It just seems quite hypocritical to me, and explains why Death Magnetic is such a mediocre record: Their hearts were not into it. Metallica (or at least Ulrich and Hammett) should just follow their hearts and start making alternative pop/rock (again). Maybe then they wil actually produce something decent again.

Fuck you. Not that i agree with every name on this list, far from it. but most of you bashers' arguments are not worth my shit in the toilet.
Are the top 20 albums of the 2000s all metal albums ? i feel sorry for you.
At least Gojira is on the list. Gojira is a perfect example of extreme music which is relevant beyond its boundaries. THis will never be the case of Gorgoroth, which is a relevant and influential band... in its 2 square feet musical nice. COB??? please.
Also, to another comment above : Yes, Paradise Lost and Amorphis are great bands that have produced great albums.... In the 90s. If the list was for the 1990s, I would have put in The Karelian Isthmus or Tales from the Thousand Lakes in there, because they are masterpieces that transcend the death metal genre. What they did after Elegy (which was good) simply has not reached that level. At the time i suppose bands like COB were still studying the art of ....make up .
Personally i would have put an Anathema album in there, or Rodrigo y Gabriela, but again, this is personal. Nothing by slayer or megadeth that's for sure.

There is something to be said for having a diverse taste in music. However, there is nothing to be said for a "metal" band, who when asked to come up with 50 songs and 50 albums that were the most important of the decade, can only list like 4 metal acts. Seriously, Kid Rock, Pink, and Eminem is better than the entire metal genre in Metallica's opinion? No wonder people who know what they're talking about haven't considered you metal for the past 15 years.

I can accept the fact that everyone has their own guilty pleasures from time to time. I would never bash someone (even Metallica) for liking some gay shit on occasion...
BUT.....
Are they fucking serious with these lists? My problem with these lists isn't that they have the tastes of trendy mainstream idiots, but, a band of their caliber had a chance to acknowledge some REAL METAL bands that have worked hard and released superb quality material in the last decade but they take the safe route. But then again, they wouldn't recognize a good metal band if it flew up their tight, pretentious assholes.
This just really shows how much these guys have lost their edge and how out of touch they are with the diehard metal heads that keep them fat and rich.

WAAAAAAHHHHH! I get cranky when people don't list all the things I like. So I must immediately post how much those people suck and list all the cool, underground, dark, mysterious, things I listen to, to show how cool, underground, dark, mysterious I am to show how much my opinion matters. You're all a bunch of wankers. Get over it. Bashing Metallica is a tired game. Really you're all like a bunch of ex-boyfriends constantly bashing your old girl because she dumped you. Move on folks. In your opinion they don't care about you anyway. So why continue to waste any more time on showing how much you hate them. Yet why do I think the next post about Metallica will bring out the same old losers with their same lame, used, tired opinions. Pathetic.

Hammets choices are fine. just find it little weird they dont mention Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree, would have thought Hammet would at least listen to Porcupine Tree because he mentions Radiohead. but maybe this is the reason why metallica has sucked for 20 years????? been listening to much to Green Day, Eminem, Artic Monkeys and Kasabian, just wondering.

Although I definitely question some of these choices, they are not mine, which is what makes everyone different. When I was younger I remember being floored reading that Tom Araya loved country music. As I got older, I quickly realized there are so many wonderful musicians out there and why should I be so shallow and closed-minded to avoid them just because I love metal. Being a fan of this genre certainly has given me many wonderful moments, from concerts to exercising some demons to being addicted to playing guitar. The first time I heard Cannibal Corpse was like a breath of fresh air, much like when I heard Nirvana, or when I heard Cradle of Filth, Jewel, Sarah Mclachlan, Dream Theater, Pantera, Mammas and the Pappas, Pink Floyd, Lynard Skynard Pearl Jam and countless other bands. The only thing I hate about metal fans is how they refuse to listen to other styles of music. It does NOT soften you or whatever their claims are, I am 33 and love many different styles of music. My last concert was Behemoth, before that was Manson, before that was Melissa Etheridge and before that was Slayer. I love a lot of different styles of music as does Kirk and Lars apparently. Many fans would probably be amazed to hear some of their favorites bands influences, which can be quite drastic from the material they themselves are writing. You like what you like, and that's cool, but why bash someone else for their tastes because it differs from yours? You should stop trying so hard to hate every other genre of music just because it is not the heaviest or fastest thing you have ever heard before. Who knows, maybe you will find something out there that you really like, which will NOT mean you now have to hate metal.

I don't understand why anyone is shocked by this. With a few exceptions you've got a bland, aging corporate rock band listing the bland, commercial music they listen to.
If you're a musician, you need to have diverse musical tastes--but as somebody said above, there's nothing "diverse" about a list that reads like a Billboard Top 200 chart.
And Justice for All was 20 years ago kiddies...

I'm wondering when the world started being populated by a bunch of "Metal" fans that sound like Joey DeMaio from Manowar? "Lars ain't True Metal! He didn't list the new Hammerfall or Kamelot cd's which are by far the greatest Power Metal albums or albums period releases in decades! They're out of touch!!!!" Haha.
Wow, seriously. I'm pretty sure their lists wouldn't appease anyone. I guess their lists need to be inspected to make sure they're still part of the True Metal Elite Club. You have your Black Metal fans thinking it's not true without the best Black Metal album, and probably don't even know Gaahl is out of Gorgoroth, the Prog Metal fans claiming "False!" because they're surely out of touch without the new Porcupine Tree or Dream Theater cd's, etc, etc.
And if you want to be "true" about it, I think their first 4 albums are enough to make them "truer" than the elitists on this board. I'm pretty sure their contribution to Heavy Metal is more significant than someone's Joey DeMaio approved cd collection...

...and want to retroactively be part of the 'cool kid' group. It is just astounding they were so tenciously independent in their youth when they were most vulnerable to the manipulations of fame and money. Now that they have all the money they will ever need 100 times over they are so slavish to keeping up appearances with aging trendy hipsters.
One thing about professional musicians is they tend to love a lot of stuff very few people have ever heard of. Lars and Kirk's list look like something any knucklehead of the street would have picked.

UPDATE: Hello again my True Metal friends. I just got the new Iron Savior album, which features a guest appearance 80's true Metal group Steel Thunders' long dead frontman, Johann Stacheballs. He was so true he came back to life just to support True Metal's ongoing fight. After listening to it, I realized that it's should undoubtedly make any True Metal fan's Top 10 EVER and Kirk Hammet is a fraud for not listing it. I have reported him to Brazil's DragonBreath True Metal fanzine to have his name removed from their mailing list.

Some key points:
1) "American Hair Band" >>>> "American Bad Ass"
2) I recall very little from having listened to Sigur Ros' debut album. Which likely means I fell asleep 5 minutes in. Innovative or otherwise, I just don't get the excitement about 'em. Sorry.
3) BattleMagic summed up everything I've been saying about the Arctic Monkeys since at least 2006.
4) ...and everyone else summed up everything I've been saying about Sean Paul since, well, ever.
5) Motorhead, AIC, Lamb Of God, Mastodon and Machine Head did get some honorable mentions so the lists aren't a total write-off from a metal fan's point of view.
6) Sinead O'Connor still makes music?

Shut the fuck up already, Metallica fanboy. This is not about diversity or being false metal. Those lists suck big time and thats about it. At least 80 % of the metalheads have a lot of diversity in music taste. I know it. I speak to metal fans at every concert and festival I go (being the 20% true metalheads fanatics the younger ones - as it should be, anyway).
I listen to Darkthrone. I listen to Amos Lee. I listen to Dio. I listen to Katie Melua. I listen to Brahms. I listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan. I listen to Camel. I listen to Burzum. I listen to Tesla. I listen to Popol Vuh. I listen to Mozart. I listen to Accept. I listen to Thin Lizzy. I listen to Beach Boys. I listen to Marduk. I listen to Renaissance. I listen to...
... and that list is beyond awful.

I like seeing lists like this compiled. Kirk Hammett had some good music on his list. Lars had a few as well.
I like Rolling Stone magazine myself. I disagree with some of their reviews especially their reviews of the new Lamb Of God, and two stars for the Blackening from Machine Head? Metal needed an album like the Blackening from Machine Head.
I like reading the National Affairs column in Rolling Stone. I love how their Threat Assessment scale--with us or against us--always supports the Medical Marijuana issue. I also have an issue of Rolling Stone where they talk about the Medical Cannabis industry in California.
Here are some albums I love from 2000-2009: Machine Head- Supercharger, Through The Ashes Of Empires, and The Blackening Heaven and Hell- The Devil You Know The Haunted- The Haunted Made Me Do It Slipknot- Iowa Entombed- Morning Star, Inferno/Averno Motorhead- We Are Motorhead Kreator- Violent Revolution, Enemy Of God Disturbed- Ten Thousand Fists, and Indestructible Slayer- God Hates Us All Queens Of The Stone Age- Songs For The Deaf Ministry- Animositisomina, Rio Grande Blood, The Last Sucker Fear Factory- Digimortal, Archetype Lamb Of God- As The Palaces Burn Napalm Death- Enemy Of The Music Business Armored Saint- Revelation Dio- Killing The Dragon, Master Of The Moon, and Evil Or Divine (Live in New York City) Arch Enemy- Anthems Of Rebellion Satyricon- Now, Diabolical Callenish Circle- Flesh.Power.Dominion Static-X- Machine Prong- Power Of The Damager Cavalera Conspiracy- Inflikted Sepultura- Nation, Roorback, and A-Lex Soulfly- Primitive, The Prophecy, and Conquer Overkill- Immortalis Black Sabbath- Past Lives Foo Fighters- One By One Anthrax- We've Come For You All Metallica- Death Magnetic Rollins Band- Get Some Go Again Rage Against The Machine- Renegades KMFDM- World War III MDFMK- Self-Titled Madball- Hold It Down Pantera- Reinventing The Steel Judas Priest- Angel Of Retribution Obituary- Frozen In Time Iced Earth- The Glorious Burden Testament- The Formation Of Damnation Venom- Resurrection Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow

Basajuan, I was thinking about changing my mind and was following you.......and then you had to go and mention Tesla, which is by far one of the most untrue bands, like, ever. In fact, if you make a Top 25, your awful choice will negate anything else that could be good on your list. In fact, I'm afraid that I may have to put you on the "Untrue" list at #346 between Lars Ulrich and Thomas Gabriel Fischer. Sorry.

Hookinmouth has a point. I mean, bands like CoB and Machine Head are HUUUUGE in America. Machine Head typically sells about 20k-30k per album, which is like Jonas Brothers big. In fact, I had to tell my mom to quit humming songs from 'The Blackening' the other day. Doesn't she know that Burn My Eyes was the only one even close to Trueness, and even then, that's a stretch? Hookinmouth, you can stay on the true list for now though. Just don't change your name to crushem or we'll have a problem.

exactly, they got big because they "sold out". started playing more simpler songs and slower songs like nothing else matter and so on, and most of these "fans" just listen to the readio songs. went to a concert with them few years ago and they played all of master of puppets but most of the people around me only knew One, nothing else matter enter sandman and so on. the same when i saw Red Hot Chili Peppers, the people around only knew the stuff from californication and from there and of course under the bridge.
but im not sure lars listens to any of this stuff? he just says some of this to get some credit from the "hip" crowd.
but sometimes bands like Sigurros can get big, but its mostly because they are supposed to be so good and cool, i remember when they put Ágætis Byrjun out and noone would buy it and then suddenly all kinds of people where buying it because it was supposed to be so good and cool, but most of them wouldnt have thought of listening to them if they werent supposed to be in at that time. but still fine band and great album. but this happens with lots of bands

Doros78, best...post...ever, and I agree. Kasabian, The Datsuns and Black Keys are albums even my grandpa owns so he could be "cool" with the kids nowadays. Lars should have read the Blabbermouth forum first and let us True Metal and diversified people pick the right choices for him. That way, he could have at least followed us and not the people trying to be "good and cool" as you said. And, of course he doesn't listen to that stuff, silly. Next time though, he should save himself the time and just list the first 25 bands on the Billboard Top 200 chart of the week. BTW, The Red Hot Chili Peppers are pretty popular with the kids nowadays, even in the 80's people would try to be "good" and "cool" before they exploded. You're treading on shaky ground with that, and you risk landing yourself a spot on my Untrue list.

I was so disappointed with it, not to mention the Songs of the Decade list. I've already blown up about that one and won't do it again. I don't completely agree with Lars' or Kirk's lists, but I am really happy to see my #1 album of the decade on Kirk's list: Tool - Lateralus. Another album that would be somewhere on my Top 25 list is Iron Maiden - Brave New World. Other than those two, I'll have to give some more thought.

I'm a HUGE Metallica fan, but even I can admit their shortcomings. I know they aren't as good as they used to be. I know the choices that Lars and Kirk listed above sound trendy and I don't like most of them. I'm not going to be an ass about it like most people here, though.
Metallica made 4 masterpiece albums in a row, and the rest of their albums are pretty good, even if they AREN'T 100% metal. I think they've already accomplished a lot more in 28 years than you guys will in your whole lives, unless you consider computer-bitching to be worthy of praise...

hehe yea your right about the cool thing. but it happens every decade, the older bands who are maybe still great and putting out music and noting worse then their first albums, suddenly dont sell millions anymore because some new somtimes worse somestimes better band is suddenly whats supposed to be cool. but that doesnt mean the older bands should quit, they should just keep making music because selling few hundred thousands or whatever isnt that bad and maybe their time will again too, thats happened to some bands. but its also a little difficult for a band like Kiss or Marylin Manson to stay as popular with the mainstream because they have make ups and all that stuff that tends to get older people or parents off.
but realy do the people here realy thing Lars listenes to Eminem????? how many times do you thing he listened to that album? just wondering. and there must be some other better rap albums or rappers out there, if not then rap truly is a shitty music

and why always usualy in these lists one album by band or one song by a band??? and why the hits??? usually at least with rock and metal bands the hits are usually the worst songs of the albums, but still they are the songs you let the "casual" listener listen to so he knows the band. but still if i would choose a band to be in i would choose Dream Theater, Tool or Porcupine Tree, they are all big but still they realy just have their true fans, and they can play almost any song or album live and everyone there would know it and love it. thats the worst thing about getting too big, you get stuck with the hits and also because most of the people there just wanna relive some old memories or something like that.
but also i would have to choose Motley Crue, just for because of the fun they have had over the years and are still going after all those years

There were a few albums I enjoyed recentely like the last Machine Head album, the new alice in chains album and couple of others but when i look back especially at the last 5 years it just seems like a fog of shit metalcore, emo and those crappy death metal band like the red chord.
