Man, Teen Listened To SLIPKNOT Before Committing Murder

Felisa Cardona of San Bernardino County Sun reports that a pair of friends carried butcher knives and sang a song by the "death metal" band SLIPKNOT as they lured their friend to his death, police say. Prosecutors say Jason Lamar Harris, 20, and his 16-year-old friend, Amber Rose Riley, talked about killing Terry Ray Taylor for months. Taylor, 22, of San Bernardino, was found dead under a large pepper tree in Perris Hill Park on April 24. Detectives said they counted more than 20 stab wounds all over Taylor's body. His throat was slashed, they said. San Bernardino Superior Court Judge Michael A. Smith ruled on June 26 that there was enough evidence to hold Riley and Harris for trial on murder charges. Riley was charged as an adult under Proposition 21, a law that allows teenagers 14 and older to be tried and sentenced as adults for murder. Police detectives testified that Riley and Harris told them they were listening to a SLIPKNOT CD before and after they killed Taylor. The lyrics that the detectives describe match those from SLIPKNOT's song "Disasterpiece". The three walked up a hill in the park and sat under a tree. Riley was in front of Taylor and Harris sat behind him, San Bernardino police Detective John Munoz said. Riley motioned to Harris to start stabbing Taylor, Munoz said. "He had the knife in his lap, placed it around the victim's neck and began to struggle with him," Munoz said. Then Riley started stabbing Taylor, Munoz said. Harris reportedly told Munoz that he plunged the knife three times into Taylor's side. "Mr. Harris was anxious," Munoz said of his interview with Harris. "He wanted to tell me what happened. He indicated to me that he wanted to tell the truth." Riley reportedly told San Bernardino police Detective Michael Vasilis that she stabbed Taylor at least three times in the lower back, but she wasn't sure if he was alive or dead when she stabbed him. "She said she heard gurgling sounds and a gasping sound coming from the wounds," Vasilis said. "She said she stabbed him slowly in the back." Read more.

this is going to start up all sorts of crap just like columbine did, i did big term paper a little over a year ago about lyrics from metal groups being responsible for homocides and suicides and as a test i had different people listen to the songs in question a few times, without looking at the lyrics no one could understand the words and after looking at them and listening at the same time most people just said that they were silly, granted it wasn't the most scientific of studies and what not i was able to reasonably conclude that much like drugs music is merely an excuse people use to avoid the fact that some people are just really fucked up, blame people for the shit they do, don't blame music

First off, Slipknot = Death Metal? When I hear Death Metal, I think of Vader, Dismember, Deicide, old school Sepultura, old school Fear Factory, Gorgoroth and so on. But Slipknot still kicks sweet bippy's.
Two, when I heard the name "Terry Taylor", I could have SWORE it was The Red Rooster himself. Ha ha! The guy was named after the Red Rooster Terry Taylor, plus he died by the hands of a bunch of confused Slipknot kids, who are more than likely Hot Topic martyrs. Crazy ass ponies.....

I play some of the most violent video games and listen to some violent music, and I'm the calmest guy in the world. I can pretty much say I can count any fights I've been in on one hand. Music, TV, video games, movies, clothing life styles...these are NEVER to blame for crazy people. I'll agree that certain CDs, games or movies fall into a category in which parents should talk to their kids about or they should set limits until they know right from wrong. But that's just the point...that's the parents responsibility.

Morbid...the only problem is that while WE know Slipknot is not metal...mainstream America-who knows NOTHING about metal (i.e. the media, politcians)-DO believe that Slipknot is metal. To these people who don't know any better, Slipknot is deathmetal. Though to most of us, they aren't metal at all. So yea, most of these morons are going to be possibly blaming metal but I doubt this will cause a huge ruckus.

The article says they planned the murder for months in advance. That pretty much eliminates the possibility of their being inspired to kill him by the song they listened to only minutes before.
This was a murder directed at a very specific target, so it's very different from the random psycho violence generally attributed to metal. There's a pretty good chance the guy deserved it.
And what were they doing for those months of planning? They got caught and confessed right away.

It said at the end of this story how eager the kids were to tell the police "everything," and how they just wanted to "tell the truth." I think the reason they were so eager to talk was that they thought by blaming a band like Slipknot for everything, they might have been able to weasel their way out of harsher punishment. If they had any sense they would have blamed Cannibal Corpse or something. (Cannibal Corpse are a great band, I'm just saying the lyrics are a lot more violent than Slipknot's). They probably said the first band that came into their head. Slipknot are a good band themselves, it's a shame they'll have to be dragged into this just like dear old Manson and Columbine.

The media singles out metal as a scapegoat, but they fail to realize that killers listen to a WHIDE VARIETY OF MUSIC. Unfortunatley, the vast majority of people won't only not distinguish between different subgenres of metal but most will just blame it on "rock and roll"; what about the content of like 90% of any newscast, movie, paper, alot of books etc. etc. etc..
They just need a defense and it's a weak one (thankfully).
Justice is an idealized concept.

Death, Carcass, Immolation, Cynic, Atheist Vader, Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy = All more infinitely interesting, talented bands in the death metal genre than Slipknot. Corey Taylor is fucking terrible. When he tries to sing it just sounds whiney and immature.
The weak backing music doesnt exactly help, either. When I want to listen to watered-down, prefabricated, boring, unimaginative mainstream garbage, maybe I will pick up a Slipknot record.

Slipknot could be considered death metal. Sure there are many bands both good and BAD who stick to the genre in more straightforward way. ANd then we have to consider just how many different styles of death metal there are. No, its not. Anything is better than labeling them death metal. Yes, there is a lack of quality in the death metal scene in some bands, but its like that in any genre. But when you have a singer who sounds like a little bitch, a sampler, a dj, and other pieces of shit that dont do anything, you are not death metal. The occassional tremelo picked riff or blastbeat would be the ONLY thing that would make them death metal.
Slipknot are not death metal.
And the only reason I and others use Schuldiner as an example is because he was a great musician and stood for all that good music is.

Have had fans or (sick fucks) do this before atleast two times.
Nothing ever happens to muscians. It isnt their fault, however it would be great if slipknot were prosecuted along with the two sick bastards, so they couldnt come out with another albumn.

sorry this is a sad story but dont EVER blame music!!!!! cause thats making an excuse!!! i had times when i was really down and listen to the heaviest of metal and im still alive! i blame the fuckin parents who wasnt there to make sure there fuckin kids wasnt going to be stupid. everyone always blame the metal bands but never anything else!!!! i think those who are pointin the finger better look at themselves.cause i got my ass kicked at school day-in and day-out and im still living so this isnt a MUSIC FAULT.sorry if i sound pissed but as a harcore metaler i HATE it when my music gets the cork up the ass!

Most of your precious death metal bands tune down, including vader. Stop being so ignorant and using downtuning as an argument; just makes you look like you know nothing about music. I've heard both of slipknot's guitarists shred; mick (the guy in the hockey mask) sweeps arpeggios and runs through minor harmonic scales like malmsteen, the other dude is very much influenced by paul gilbert. I'm not trying to defend slipknot, but they use techniques in their songs that are more associated with death metal rather than nu: like palm-muting intensive riffs, tremollo picking, pinch harmonics and trills. I haven't heard any other nu metal bands that do that. Take in consideration the double bass and sometimes blasts, and you've got an array of death metal influences. The drummer and the bassist used to play in anal blast. Draw your own conclusions.

Or if you think they blow.
Everyone has their own tastes and opinions, but for fucks sake, the point is that music is once again going to take the blame.
All the Fundamentalists and ultra right wing politicians are going to be all over this and they are going to try to make it impossible for anyone who wants to listen to heavy music to do so. (try being the operative word here, unless our brilliant Commander in Cheif manages to pass certain "acts" into effect)
Our country's unemployment rate is at a record high, so the idiot politicians need something to focus the American public's attention on, so that we will forget that our government are a bunch of fuckwhats. This is just the type of thing that will be snatched up, chewed on to death and repeatedly puked up by the government in order to make people think about something besides the fact that our President is a bold faced liar that is killing our people.

They use tremollo picking almost on every song of their second cd, iowa. They don't use their talents because talent doesn't sell, not because they can't play. Why doesn't Devin Townsend shred in SYL and his solo stuff? He can, but he has his reasons not too. Are you going to say he's talentless too?

I never said I was a slipknot fan, and the argument was never about their integrity. The fact is, they can play, I heard them shred and that's the bottom line. You're the one who is posting false bullshit without providing any facts. Don't get pissed - if you don't know what you're talking about, don't argue, it's that simple.

im not getting pissed, why would i get pissed over an internet forum? i dont care if you are right or wrong, i've never heard them 'sherd' so all i go on is their songs, and i am not a fan of their songs (to say the very least). In my book, they are terrible, i would rather go cut my ears of than listen to them.

Yet Again, the choose music to be the scapegoat for the evil that come from people.
People will be people.
Sometimes there just isn't any excuse for the things we do, they blamed manson on Columbine, slipknot on the German School Massacre, and now this. it will never end, the real reason for many of these murders is the people that were killed, the 8 kids from Columbine were physically and mentally abused for many years by the students they killed, and I'm sure those from Germany were done the same way.
Although in this particular murder the motive is unclear at the moment I find it inconceivable that someone would murder anyone without a motive or mental problems of some sort, music doesn't make people, murder others, that instinct was given to you at birth your will to control it is all that keeps you from unleashing that urge. And sometimes people just snap.
This is a part of life stop blaming it on the music, and starts blaming those whom really cause these murders.
BTW its about 3 AM and im about to fall asleep so if any of this sound off the wall you know why

First of all, none of you people have even close to the whole story. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT are the ones that said the murder the band are related, NOT the person that committed the crime. The PERSON.... not people. Amber did not commit the crime, she never touched the guy. If anyone wants actual facts instead of a story told incorrectly a hundred times over making it even worse than it was to begin with... email me!!!!!!!!!
