JOE PERRY Confirms STEVEN TYLER Tried Out For LED ZEPPELIN - Feb. 4, 2010
According to The Pulse of Radio, Joe Perry confirmed the rumors that Steven Tyler did indeed try out for LED ZEPPELIN shortly after Robert Plant passed on reuniting with the band in 2008. For the first time Perry shared the details of Tyler's ill-fated attempt to front ZEPPELIN, telling Classic Rock magazine, "Steven disappeared and I called around. Somebody said he was in London trying out for LED ZEPPELIN. It's something I've never talked about before. It's a kind of window into how hard it's been to keep the partnership together. It's not the first time things like this have happened— that's the downside of our relationship."

According to what Jimmy Page told Perry, the rehearsals were "shambolic," with Tyler unfamiliar with the ZEPPELIN catalogue and under the impression they would be working on new material.

Perry added: "Page felt really awkward about the audition, but ultimately it was a group decision (to pass on Tyler)."

Perry spoke to Arkansas City, Kansas radio station KACY 102.5 FM and admitted that having Paul Rodgers replace Tyler in AEROSMITH was a thought, and that he plans to record some solo tracks with Rodgers in the future.

When asked if he would be amenable to having a female singer replace Tyler, Perry said: "Oh, definitely! No one in the band's brought that up, but sometimes. . . You've gotta think out of the box. Oddly enough, a lot of the bands I was in before I had AEROSMITH, I had female singers in the band and it was really good — a lot of great songs. So that's definitely a possibility."

Hmm, interesting...I honestly thought that Tyler auditioning was just a wild rumor.

I think Tyler could've done a helluva job, provided that he was sober and took it seriously.

It would NOT have been Zeppelin by any means, but still a cool collaboration between two colossal icons.

When I saw Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes in Worcester, MA back in 1999, Joe Perry showed up out of nowhere for the encore. It was totally unexpected and, being so close to Boston, the crowd went berserk.

They did a blistering version of You Shook Me, with Perry and Page jokingly trying to outdo each other on blues soloing, pushing each other out of the way and blocking the audience view of each other...all in good fun, of course. It was a great night.

How so? Although they have different voices, Tyler's vocal range and power have held up much better than Plant's over the years.

I would've liked to have heard Tyler sing some Zep songs, just for grins.

Don't get me wrong...Tyler's juvenile, junkie behavior over the last few years towards his bandmates and his fans has been thoroughly reprehensible and discgraceful...

...but his status as a legendary frontman and vocalist is undeniable. No one can take that away from him at his point.

Shut Up!! you talk too much Aerosmith is nothing without
Steven Tyler even though he has not put out nothing but shit
pop music for the last twenty years or so.
And Joe said that Paul Rodgers looks at Aerosmith as kids?
Joe Perry is one year younger than Paul Rodgers so he
must be getting alzheimer's disease to think he is so much
younger than Rodgers .
And one more thing Aerosmith has not made anything but
crap pop music for more than two decades so instead of
playing to empty halls with your new singer why not just
retire because your Joe Perry project album
Have guitar will travel sucked Eggs .
And the Joe Perry Project sucked when they played

It's funny to me when people on a message board give the "great" advice that a band who makes at least $250,000 for every 90 minutes they do should quit because they've run their course. This band will make more in 4 days than you will in your life...I'll be honest, I'm jealous. I'd love to stand 30 days in their shoes. I'd retire after that.

Joe Perry needs to stop all this nonsense, it's so desparate an attempt to get Tyler to come back, just go away until you work it out. As for Tyler/Zeppelin, who knows the truth, but the idea that Steven Tyler would not 'know' the Led Zep catalog is impossible to believe, hell, a casual classic rock fan would know the Zep catalog!

The only exceptions I can think of are John Corabi, and John Bush. They have been in the shadows ever sinse. Both are two of the best singers out there. If things happen they should take a side project under a different name, with some of their songs into the mix. Like Audioslave or Velvet Revolver.

Zeppelin, like Maiden and unlike Ac/Dc are bands that only those singers can front. Period. Maiden is Bruce's band from a vocal standpoint and Zeppelin will always and should always be Robert's band. There are exceptions, obviously. You can't take Lars out of MetallicA or Geddy out of (my fav.) rUSh. Can't be done, my friends.

You forget that Bruce Joined Maiden after 2 successful albums that helped the band break America and Japan and already own the UK.

I don't dispute the fact that Maiden became the Legendary monster that it is with Bruce up front - but saying "Iron Maiden can only be fronted by Bruce" is already proven to be incorrect..... and there are many original Maiden fans who still say DiAnno is their singer of choice .......

Tyler singing Zepplin songs is just weird. It would be kinda fun for a live cover or two, but no way I'd go see or pay money for. Tyler's voice is iconic, he knows it, but it would sound weird with anything other than Aerosmith or some solo crap.

This whole current Aerosmith shit is like some bizarre Behind the Music parody. "Then do the dismay of his bandmates, Tyler teamed up with the other guy from WHAM and the rest was history..."

Maiden wasn't known with their first singer, didn't get radio play etc. So no one knew Dickenson took over. Do you remember when that happened...it worked for AC/DC because they wrote one of rock's alltime albums. Plus, if the singer dies, they aren't left with many options, so the fans might be more forgiving. And commercially, Ac/Dc was just starting to take off with Scott, they weren't monsters yet.

VH, anyone could have fronted them in 1986, EVH was so in demand it was crazy. Prove in the fact it worked with Hagar, commericially. Some of the lamest pop fluff ever, yet it sold, while turning the stomachs of the VH fans that liked their harder edged sound/songs. Dream, Love walks in, how do i know when its love, blah, blah, utter sap....and Aerosmith, 40 years into their career, isnt' going to fly w/out Tyler. +

First off, VH had some sick songs with Sammy, they just played the sappier stuff, which they always had with Dave too. Plus Dave is a tool that couldn't touch Sammy singing.
Yoko singing for Aerosmith would be epic. It couldn't sound worse than Steven Tyler and Kid Rock singing Sweet Emotion.
You can't blame Perry or Page for wanting to get someone else. Is it their fault that their respective singers douched out and quit? Although I want to know what is really going on with Zeppelin? Is it Plant and Jones not getting along? Why was Plant good with PlantPage but without Jones, they all play one show together, now Page and Jones are on board but Plant is being a douche? Is Plant that Pussy whipped by that bluegrass bitch? The Hillbilly Yoko.
