MEGADETH Rejoined By Bassist DAVID ELLEFSON - Feb. 8, 2010
MEGADETH founder and frontman Dave Mustaine has announced the return of original bassist David Ellefson (1983-2002) to the iconic multi-platinum group. This reunion is appropriately timed to MEGADETH's upcoming historic month-long "Rust In Peace" 20th anniversary tour which launches March 1 in Spokane, WA. At these incredibly special shows, MEGADETH will play their landmark, genre-defining 1990 album "Rust In Peace" in its entirety, in addition to other MEGADETH favorites.

"This shows the power of brotherly love and forgiveness," Mustaine says. "David Ellefson belongs in MEGADETH. Next we are going to show you the power of getting your asses kicked...HARD!"

David Ellefson concurs: "This is a huge moment for all of us, band and fans alike. It is a great celebration of the music from one of the biggest landmark albums of our career."

Ellefson will join Mustaine and MEGADETH band members Shawn Drover (drums) and Chris Broderick (guitar) on tour in support of the group's current CD, "Endgame", which has received some of the highest critical accolades of the band's career.

"We'd like to thank James Lomenzo for several years of loyal service on the bass, and wish him the very best," Mustaine adds.

Ellefson filed suit against Mustaine in 2004, claiming, among other things, breach of fiduciary obligation, libel and emotional distress.

Speaking to Cindy Scull of the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas radio station 97.1 The Eagle Rocks in September 2009, Dave Mustaine stated about Lomenzo's addition to MEGADETH, "When Junior [Ellefson] and I parted ways, I thought, well, even though I don't care for this guy anymore after suing me, I certainly know it's gonna be some big shoes to fill. . . And when James Lomenzo came in... I was comparing James MacDonough [Ellefson's initial replacement in MEGADETH] to Junior a lot, and it wasn't working. But when Lomenzo came in, he plays as good as Junior does, and he sings better, because Junior couldn't sing. James was part of that WHITE LION thing way back in the '80s, and he can sing, man — he can sing really good."

In a fall 2009 interview with Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM, Dave Mustaine was asked whether he and Ellefson have mended their differences. "Well, I forgave him, but I'll never play with him again," Mustaine replied. "I talked to him a little while ago about coming back and playing with us when I first took MEGADETH out of the ashes, and then there was a period after that where we discussed it again. It's just not right, [and] it'll never be right. The guy, his butt grew together when I called him Junior, and I'm thinking, 'What the hell is wrong with that?' If it's that nit-picky where you can't even call somebody a nickname he's had for 20 frickin' years, it's like, things have changed. I mean, like I said, he's a good bass player. I'm sure his band... whatever it's called... I think it's F5 or something. There's several F5s, though. So he's the one in the band without the girl singer. But I'm sure that if it's meant to be for him, he's gonna be successful again; if not, I know he's happy doing his thing [working as an as an artist relations representative] with Peavey [manufacturer of musical equipment, gear and accessories]. The bottom line is I still respect and appreciate what he did for me being the bass player in MEGADETH for so long. Although what he did to me was very, very hurtful — especially airing all of the stuff that happened, because a lot of the stuff wasn't true; some of it was true, and I made mistakes — I'm human; I make mistakes — and I made amends for it. But even still, having made amends, it didn't matter; I was still in this lawsuit [that Ellefson filed against Mustaine shortly after Mustaine announced that he was reforming MEGADETH with a new lineup]. And that was kind of hurtful. But the bottom line is I went out to Arizona and I met him, and I said, 'I forgive you.' When I became a Christian, I really, really [didn't wanna] be another one of these idiots that are Christians who walk around and they embarrass themselves. I don't tell people how to live their lives, I don't tell people, 'You need to go to church,' 'cause that's not my place; I've got enough wrong with me right now where I would be a complete hypocrite. But I did know that if I continued to hold on to that bitterness for him, who would be hurting? Me. Because [Ellefson] doesn't care if I forgive him or not. I mean, I'm sure it made him feel better, because when he lost, he lost a lot — he lost me, he lost the band, he lost a lot of fans, he lost a lot of money... He had to pay all my court costs and everything. But the bottom line, again, I forgave him. Now, does that mean we're gonna swap spit and Christmas cards and stuff like that? No."

This is a great moment, and I'm sure the Sonisphere cash will help Ellefson forget all the shit Megaman has said about him since 2004.

This is great though. The Mustaine solo project was never the same without this guy.

And Mustaine is right: Junior belongs to Megadeth... but I wouldn`t mind to see a Hail jam here and there... with Dave joining them on encore? cool...

PS - Will Mustaine change anything on his autobiography about Ellefson now?

Where did this come from? Guess Jr. was playing it up when he said he wasn't going to read Mustaine's book. Wonder how it went down, i.e. if Dave shit on James or if James had some reason to leave. Not cool if he did it in the unprofessional fashion. He better not burn any bridges with Broderick, i.e. bring Marty back for the RIP shows, then Marty decides he would rather wear a kimono whilst playing guitar on the Hello Kitty soundtrack. I'd not replace Drover either, Menza was awesome, but it'd be a bigger shock if Dave brought him back.
Well, I guess it's welcome back Junior. Thanks Lomenzo for your time...perhaps the world will continue to spin backwards and the proper line up for White Lion will reunite, come on Vito you know you wanna.

The two sides entered into negotiations and Ellefson was trying to buy out his share of the Megadeth, Inc. company. They went back and forth and Mustaine put the squeeze on him giving a 5pm deadline on a Friday. Ellefson ended up not liking what his side came up with, but he had sent the fax out which the court considered a counter-offer and Mustaine accepted it.

Lomenzo never really seemed that into being a member of Megadeth. It came off as more of a job to him. Good news for everybody! This upcoming tour is getting better by the week. Since Megadeth and Testament are playing past albums, it would be cool if Exodus played their new album. That would put a bit of a spotlight on themselves.

You wanna actually apply that to Metallica? Its easy to forgive people who are going about things the way you want them to, its a lot harder when your pride tells you that you are right be unforgiving. What's worse is that you let your ego (what ego you could have is beyond me) justify yourself in holding a grudge for what should be considered a world record. The two things you can do: 1) Play riffs and solos fast as hell. 2) Run your damn mouth, fast as hell.

this is the way Holy Wars is meant to be played on drums

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErnLFRgRekM

Note to drummers:

the 0:21 fill are SINGLE STROKES, SINGLE FUCKING STROKES, not the 4 strokes, 2 bass drum bullshit that every single drummer does.

Menza IS the best drummer this band had, bar none.

Sorry, but the thought of an ex-White Lion member in Megadeth never sat well with me. Talented? Yes. Guilty of being a glamed out cock rocker? Absolutley.

This makes the current lineup much more legitimate. Very cool.

It's good to see David bury the hatchet. Shocking news....Lomenzo is a great bassist, but I never bought him as a thrash bassist, I just kept seeing the guy who played in White Lion. As far as bringing back the RIP band, I'm perfectly happy with Broderick and Drover.

I'm really sad to see James go, He's a hell of a Bass player and wrote great bass lines! He's the only one who moved live and he's the oldest. Good luck to you James.

This is great and sad at the same time, but I finally get to see Ellefson. Gonna see them in Hollywood.

You're doing good on your own (F5, marketing rep for Peavey, youtube instructional vids, etc). So, Shitstaine FORCED Lomenzo to be kicked out just to have something with him for the Rust in Peace tour...um, what...Lomenzo walked in rehearsal one day and Shitstaine said, "You're out!" or either he got paid a hefty sum just to be kicked out. Typical douchebag Mustaine would've done those two things for sure. You bet your asses that's what happened here. Junior's better off if I was him...just to be not anywhere near the asshole that's Mustaine has become. With that said, hope Ellefson has fun while it last. Has he been reading up or heard what Mustaine have been spouting off just last year?! and the fact he even said, "I'll never play with Junior again!" Overall, bad move imo. Good luck David.

Dave ellefeson will be the bass until:

1- got fiired again for no especific reason
2- the end of this peace sells tour
3- they sue each other again

BTW - why not ask Polland to come back to the band?

BTW (part 2) - was Lomenzo the "best bass player" Mustaine ever played before? he was fired or he just got tired of Mustaine non-sense?

Mustaine mentioned in an interview a little back that Lomenzo was starting to annoy them with all his other commitments and respectfully said that James wanted to spend more time with his family and daughter.

Now Ellefson...WOW! I'm not sure what to say about that. If you remember Mustaine was ready to quit after his arm injury and was going to give JUNIOR control of things and then Jr. acted like a dick in front of Mustaine and his son. Mustaine took things back and Jr. tried to sue...I'm not a Christian (and NEVER will be) so its hard for me to understand forgiving that kind of dick slapping...

Whatever...Jr's gotta be ecstatic, and the tour goes on...best of luck to Lomenzo, great player, class act...

to get Ellefson back or the Rust In Peace Tour promoter offered Mustaine more money if he got Ellefson back. I don't believe the forgiveness lie for a second. Mustaine has zero integrity to do that to James. All Mustaine cares about is money and his fucking Mercedes.

I've really liked everything Megadave has done since reforming the band without David, but I gotta say as half-assed as I thought The World Needs A Hero was, I've missed Ellefson's distinctive sound that he brings to the table. The last really good song of his (in my opinion) was "Disconnect". I hope they can get along well enough to record another album together without slowing down the momentum Dave's been building with the last few albums. I'm glad I didn't go to bed as early as I planned. Now I can end the day with some good news.

sanyr Mustaine hired him, but he couldn't perform. He rehired Shawn and Shawn has done marvelous, & contributed lyrically about as much as the other three guys (his brother Glen, Chris, & James) musically combined-which is a lot for more drummers.

I don't see Menza coming back with his drug addiction. Plus I honestly think Shawn is a much better drummer. They do, after all, tend to be British...

...or Canadian! XD

Ellefson was there through all the lineup changes. I agree about Marty being superior to Broderick on leads, but I found he put a lot of emotion to his playing in Jag Panzer. So maybe the playing will step up in emotion on the next record (songwriting could use a bit of a punch too). Othewise, this is a great day for Deth fans.

Rust in Peace tour? Dave Jr back in the band?

Does anyone else notice the similarity to the Anthrax reunion?

I feel sorry for James. Now he knows how Bush feels! (and Jeff Young, Chris Poland, etc, etc)

I always felt something was missing while Jr was out of the band. Just didn't seem like 'Deth with just Dave Mustaine.

However, after hearing Endgame, I didn't miss him at all!
Wicked album by a band firing on all cylinders, hired guns or no.
