STEVEN TYLER: I'll Never Forget LED ZEPPELIN Audition As Long As I Live
- Feb. 9, 2010
|
|
|
When LED ZEPPELIN was considering touring without Robert Plant, they auditioned Steven Tyler for the vocalist position, but AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry has revealed that the tryout didn't go so well. According to Classic Rock magazine, Jimmy Page told Joe that the rehearsals were "shambolic" since Steven didn't really know ZEP's catalog. However, last year, when Steven told VH1 Radio Networks' Dave Basner about his audition, he made it seem like he was very familiar with the band's songs.
"The kid in me was dying," Tyler told VH1 Radio Networks. "I got to sing every song from 'Black Dog' up and down and I'll never forget it as long as I live."
Nonetheless, Page felt "awkward" about the situation and said the guys in ZEP decided to pass on Steven. Tyler told VH1 Radio Networks about that decision, "I don't think a band like theirs needs a singer like me. They already had the best, they were the best, in fact, there is no genre for what LED ZEPPELIN is other than LED ZEPPELIN. I've already got AEROSMITH, I'm doing what I'm doing, Robert Plant's doing what he wants to do so I don't think there was really room for that.”
In the latest twist in the AEROSMITH/Steven Tyler saga, Perry says that Tyler has neither quit the band or been fired by AEROSMITH. Perry told Classic Rock magazine, "Steven hasn't quit the band, nor have we sacked him. We're taking the attitude that he's going on a vacation from AEROSMITH. While he's away working on other projects, the rest of us want to carry on playing live. So we will be bring another singer to make this happen."
He went on to say that any replacement would be hired for live dates until Tyler returns: "We're not daft enough to think we can replace Steven, and that's not our plan. But after 40 years of working together we just don't wanna stop. How long with Steven be away? He says it'll be two years, but I believe he'll be back a lot sooner. It may end up that we only do 10 shows with the new person!"
Perry says that he and the band realize that age is a tremendous factor in the professional decisions they make: "You realize you're not an immortal, and you don't have this 22-year-old feeling of 'this thing can go on forever,' and you know, 'I can do whatever I want, I can go for three nights without sleep and everything will be fine.' You start to realize that it's a very delicate thing, life is a delicate thing, and being able to perform at the top of your game is a delicate thing. And it's one of those changes, you know, that comes over. I'm still amazed that we can put on the kind of show that we put on. Every night could be our last."

Zeppelin, while there's no disputing their popularity, have gotta be one of the more terribly overrated bands of "classic rock."
Very talented musicians, but most of what's interesting about their music was ripped off of penniless American blues musicians. Throw in reading too much Tolkien and Crowley, strangle a cat into a microphone, and you too can be like Zep!
Gotta agree with Guttenberg here--I'd take Sabbath over either of these bands any day.

It's too late in your career to launch any kind of solo project of any length of time and really, nobody cares. Try making an Aerosmith album that doesn't suck. Really liked Done with Mirrors, lost interest after Permanent Vacation.

So Tyler tries out for Led Zeppelin and now he's whining about somebody auditioning for his spot in Aerosmith. Evidently he doesn't expect "brand Tyler" to bring in as much money as Aerosmith.

That's your opinion about Zepp being over-rated. I and a lot of others, disagree and don't feel this way about them, as you do.
Tyler and the whole fukking band, should just retire that old albatross that they've been touting around for years that's called Aerosmith and then leave it dead. Right where it belongs to be.
The same for Led Zeppelin. It was what it was. Gotta' respect Plant for realizing he's too old to even attempt to revive Zepp. What is and what should never be.

I'm also well aware of thir rip-offs (that's another fact, actually) but they took the whole game to a different level back then, n no one ever topped that since. Well, IMHO.

At least come up with something else. It's interesting how everyone knows how Zeppelin got so successful, how easy it apparently was. Yet no one else can duplicate it. Hmmm. Maybe it's because they were f'ing great.

This whole situation is "shambolic"
Zeppelin looking for a new singer???
Aerosmith looking for a new singer??
Do they not realize they're nostalgic acts and without their singers, it's no longer nostalgic?
At least Page was smart enough to realize this. Perry needs to wise the fuck up.

Fine with me if you don't like Zep. But your argument is very weak. I mean, look at any band. They all have influences. I will take Metallica since is one of the biggest bands now: they wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Thin Lizzy or Diamond Head or any band that made them pick up a guitar. Iron Maiden without Lizzy would be unconcievable too. AC/DC without Chuck Berry? And I could go on forever but I am too lazy today.
I mean, that thing about ripping blues musicians is old and doesn't make sense. Put Led Zeppelin in context. Put them in fucking 1968. For that time, they were the shit. Plus Page is a legendary Hard Rock guitar player. The icon of Hard Rock guitar players. And Bonham, the same but on drums.

The only other band I prefer is The Beatles but they weren't hard rock/metal obviously. This Aerosmith drama is making me sick, nice way to go out after almost 40 yrs, I think Tyler is losing his mind if you want my opinion.
Steven Tyler is an awesome frontman but he's acting like a jackass and everyone is suffering.

I've not understood the whole "Zepplin's the greatest ever" thing either. Especially when they're talked about as a heavy metal band. Sure, they've got a few songs that rock. But metal? No. Black Sabbath I think was the first prominent metal band. But not Zep.

LOL, it's the internet, you can't argue logic with someone who does not respect Zeppelin. You can't be a rock\metal fan and not appreciate what they did and how it sounds great even today. My son listened to Zeppelin in high school and it's my understanding kids still do. Not too many bands can say that.
As for the story, sounds like the band will also never forget the audition, except they want to.

haha its not like Zeppelin where the only band to do that, almost any band from that time did take the best parts from the blues and made it more rock oriented. and if you listen to the albums you will see how great they are. and they didnt even promote themselfs or make singles or shit like that, just did their albums and live shows. Zeppelin, Sabbath and Purple where and are great bands, and so are Aerosmith, its just the ballads have overshadowed their more rocking side, but the albums have all been good if you realy give them a change and stop whining about those ballads. saw them live 2-3 years ago and they were great, one of the best concerts i have seen and Perry and Tyler are great!

They are the P-Diddy of rock. They lifted more work from other artists than any hip-hop/rap artist.
Hell, even the intro to 'Stairway' was "borrowed" from the song 'Taurus' by Spirit.

Yeah, they borrowed from blues. Most artist at that time in England were very enthused with both blues and skiffle. Rockabilly. What made Zeppelin unique was the new arrangements of electric blues fused with Page's C.I.A influences as he called them..Celtic, Indian, and Arabic music fused with raucous blues and acoustic folk. Jimmy also was an innovator in recording technology coming from years as a session musician. John Paul Jones as well. They were not a typical "british blues" band. The only contemporaries of the time people even still talk about are Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, The Beatles, and Black Sabbath. Great company I would say.

As i read the comment that Zep is a rip off of old bluesman--it bothers me. Allthough they--and practically every other english bands of there time took from the likes of Robert Johnson/Muddy Watters--they made it rock!Pages guitar work is some of the most inventive playing iv'e heared, and iv'e been playing 30 yrs!Additionally, his songwriting and producing skills are unmatched, with all there success coming with very little airplay at the time--they will never be matched!

sorry. Zeppelin was a monster. Tyler and aerosmith are still at the top of the heap. I've heard aerosmith do some zep covers and they just kicked ass. Sabbath was fine. I personally found them dark and boring. I never cared for ozzy. I think his voice and songwriting were pretty damn good, but he was a total loser on a stage. He looks like the wasted oaf that he is. Not too hard to stand in one place and say I love you all night long. Metal is in the ear of the listener. Queen used to be called a metal band. I used to think ac/dc was a punk band when they started. I hated that band, still don't see the big attraction. They are another incredibly boring band live. I have yet to find a band other than aerosmith where I can sit through the entire album and enjoy it. while I'm at it, I saw part of a maiden show the other night on tv and the crowd was singing word for word with them. I don't like that band either, but you have to admire fans who love a band that much.
