Israeli Metal Fans Boycott METALLICA Concert
- Mar. 2, 2010
|
|
According to Metal Israel, a number of METALLICA fans in Israel have vowed to boycott the band's May 22 appearance at Ramat Gan stadium in Tel Aviv after the concert's promoter, Marcel Avram, announced that he would charge no less than 600 shekel (around $159 based on the current exchange rate) for the cheapest seats, with the floor seats costing double that amount. A Facebook page has been launched in an effort to bring attention to this issue and over 540 fans have reportedly already "committed" to boycotting the show. According to Metal Israel, "the initiators of the boycott state that METALLICA tickets do not cost nearly as much as this in the rest of the world and assert that the promoter is trying to take advantage of loyal METALLICA fans. They propose that tickets should cost from 300 to 600 shekel, depending on the quality of seat — prices that are still high for the Israeli metal scene (international bands come to Israel all the time and tickets generally run in the 175-250 range)." This will be METALLICA's third visit to Israel; they appeared at the Amphi Park in Rishon Letzion in 1999 and Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park six years earlier. METALLICA wrapped the first leg of the jaunt at the end of January in Brazil, resuming in early March with stops in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Panama and Colombia.

you'll get less than 1000 ppl on facebook saying there boycotting the show but i bet will still go and metallica will get a sellout show of 50-60'000 ppl however much this stadium fits, It doesn't even sound like that much money , pop wankers like george michael or britney charge more and there shows can't touch a metal show from a mile away unless you have trouble sleeping a pop show is worth every cent, i think the price is justified just some ppl haven't got nothing better to do but whinge.

Totally true-- and yet. When it starts provoking people to actually boycott a band's show, that band would do well (if they actually gave two shits about their fans) to step in. Like put a stipulation in their contract with promoters that prohibits price gouging.
But the day you see Metallica actually turn down the chance to make more money is the day you see Dave Mustaine stop crying about getting kicked out of Metallica.

Metallica has nothing to do with this. Ticket prices are not determined by musicians. And not seeing one band will not change things. Plus the people who really want to see this band are not going to boycott the show, they will complain of high prices all the way to the checkout counter, but they will still be buying as typical humans do.

We are not boycotting the band itself but the promoters of the show. we love Metallica and we want to see this show, but these prices are insane, to charge $200-$600 for a ticket is not reasonable, esp with the today's economy. this has nothing to do with Anti-Semitic or the band's rate. this is about the promoters trying to screw us over and we will not let them. if enough of us will say no way we'll pay this amount then the promoters will lower their prices and we will all go see the show. the problem in Israel that shows became a Luxury for the rich and the highly devoted fans who would pay any amount to see their favorite bands, its not fair!

actually, the group has almost 2500 members, and there a couple of similar groups with a few hundred more. I think that a small percentage of the "boycotters" will still end up going, but the main audience for metallica is a bunch of teenageers, who can't possibly afford that kind of money, boycott or no boycott. Metallica's greed is kinda sickening, and I'm personally boycotting them for being douchebags AND being greedy. F*** them!

THere last tour in the UK ended up being about £40 - £50 per ticket, to put that in context you can go to the Download Festival and see a whole day of music for that kind of money.
Metallica have become the modern equivalent of the Rolling Stones, a pure musical joke, when they brought out 'Cash Magnetic' couple of years ago, no one would actually admit it was crap, because apparently it was a vast improvement on 'St Wanker' - err well barring the fact that there are actually solo's on the album it doesn't really mean it's any better.
Metallica is no longer a band, it's a BRAND - you find in most circles that to say anything slightly derogatory about this band means you are looked at like you're a freak. I loved Metallica back in the day - between 1986 and 1999 they were a formidable force, they were excellent.
Truly a shame that they simply do not care about their fans, unless of course it helps their media coverage and doesn't hurt their wallets.
A shame.
RIP Metallica 1983 - 1999.

I got the best seats for Riga, not standing GA, the first seating row in the middle for $95 and the same seat in Moscow is $185! However, Israel prices are even more, that's even more fucked up. Regarding Metallica's greed, well they are one of the few bands who do hidden charity deposits at every show, and again I will not be surprised if they will hear about that boycott and might react in favor of fans, they did lots of good similar things before.

People are choosing not to buy a service based on price. That ain't no boycott that's just plain old economics, baby. As for Metallica: I have no idea what it costs to bring dozens (hundreds?) of employees of a major corporation to a distant country, house, feed, and pay them, rent facilities for the performance, ship equipment and rent any equipment you can't ship, and, of course, buy insurance on the whole endeavor in case of an accident or lawsuit. Plus i hear Israel is a little bit messy nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if a trip there required several thousand bucks in extra security in comparison to, say, Little Rock. And, after all this hassle, it'd be nice to actually make a profit. So, while i think it's possible that they're gouging every last cent outta the common man.... it's also possible this might be a really expensive endeavor.
P.S. Death Magnetic is insanely overrated.

I am one of the groups admins, and It's important to clarify we have nothing against the band. We love Metallica and would like to go to see their show, but in the current existing Israeli economy we are asked to pay ridiculous prices. Our protest is against the local promoters, not the band. Prices for the current tour anywhere are not over £51 for the most expensive tickets, which is cheaper than what promoters here ask for the cheapest seat. We are aware that there are production costs, advertising, marketing, security, staff etc. but putting the financial burden on the fans is ridiculous. Simple economics: the more demand you have, the more you can lower the price. we are not talking about a smaller band that will attract less fans. we are talking about a band that has sold out two shows in Israel before, and will sell out once more - should ticket prices be fair.
The average age of fans who would want to be close to the stage is 18-25. Between 18-21, most Israeli citizens serve time in the army, and they only get 350-800 Shekels per month - depending on their role in the army (while the army is taking care of all their basic needs) - which would not leave them with a lot of money.
The Minimum pay in Israel for an adult over the age of 18 is 3,850.18 Shekels per month - which is barely enough to make ends meet assuming one has to pay rent, utilities and feed themselves.
We do NOT hate Metallica. The band are not to blame, they do not dictate the ticket prices, and no one is saying they are being Anti-Semitic. The band is asking for their quote. the same price they'd ask from any promoter who'd want to bring them anywhere.
The promoters said in the press that we do not understand that they have to fly the band from Europe to Israel and then back to Europe. of course we understand that, but so do promoters in Europe when the band is coming from any other place in the world, yet prices are still cheap enough for fans to be able to afford.

I only liked the first 3 albums & Cliff em All , after that they went to shit ( as far as studio goes ).To me they never recovered after Cliff died, and they lost their identity, trying to change with the times instead of sticking to their guns.
That being said, they do still kick ass live, i worked in the staging industry for 12 yrs and built many Metallica stages all over the U.S.A. and seen them dozens of times ....they still ROCK !!!!!

I saw Metallica on the Master tour and paid about 13 bucks ... have had no interest in seeing them again ... I remember the first time I heard of concert tickets going for more than 100 bucks - it was the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" tour and I thought they were insane ... turns out they just broke the ground. Hell would have to truly freeze over before I paid that kind of money to see any one band ... maybe for festival tickets, but definitely not one show ...

I guess the tickets here in Portugal are still at decent prices. A couple of examples:
Super Bock Super Rock, 2007 (Festival with Metallica, Satriani, Stone Sour, Mastodon) Ticket price: 38€ - Rock in Rio Lisboa, 2008 (Festival with Metallica, Machine Head, Apocalyptica, Moonspell) Ticket price: 53€ - Optimus Alive, 2009 (Festival with Metallica, Slipknot, Machine Head, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Ramp) Ticket price: 50€ - Metallica 2010 (own concert) Ticket price: 35-50€
You can blame your promoters for being greedy.

It's reasons like these I fuckin' hate the mainstream arena shows. The shows are way over priced and the vast majority of "fans" in attendence are posers, wagon jumpers or fair weather fans.
Once in a while I do have to bite the bullet and venture out to my local arena but so far I've lucky with prices:
Canadian Carnage (Megadeth, Slayer, Machinehead) $70.oo Alice Cooper/ Rob Zombie $70.oo
That's worth it.

Fucking General Admission wasnt full and we were sitting at the bottom of the upper seating section in Charlotte last fall with tickets that were at least $80. The ONLY way to see Metallica is ground floor in front of the stage. Sitting high above the stage loses the intensity, unable to rock out in the seats and unwilling to pay the $300 or whatever for General Admission.
There are much better bands out there to spend time and money on. Find one or make one but fuck that expensive, impersonal shit.

When they came to Brazil in 99, it was around 10 times cheaper.

Hey Guys, A lot of you are misinformed with this. An artist or in reality the people that put together their tours for them do know the ticket price in advance and agrees to it. A artists fee is not the same for every show they play. It is determined by size of venue they are playing, costs for the running the show etc. Once this has all been worked out in advance the promoter will agree with the agent of artist what the ticket cost will be. The artists fee will be a certain amount as a gaurantee so no matter how many tickets they sell if its 1 or 40,000 they get that amount and if the shows sells a certain amount of tickets or sells out etc the artist will then get a percentage of that on top of their gaurentee. I wouldnt just point you anger (which i totally agree with)at the promoter, the artists agent etc are all well aware of ticket costs when the show is getting booked. Basically a ticket price is determined by the what the bands fee is. If tickets were to be cheaper then the band would have to have a smaller fee, and that definetly isnt going to happen!

Sholeth the reasons in your points 2 comments that Lamb Of God, Down etc were all cheaper tickets is because they are smaller bands in comparison to Metallica. They dont pull the same amount of audience to a show. They dont bring anywhere near a big as production to the shows. The bigger the act and the bigger the production and venue etc the more expensive the ticket will be. Theres no point in comparing the ticket prices to smaller bands who have played in the past in Israel. At the end of the day Metallica and there camp have came through and reduced the tickets prices which is great but at the end of the day bands at the level of Metallica will always be more expensive a ticket than smaller bands like Lamb of god
