KING DIAMOND Discusses Upcoming Live Album, PROBOT Project - Dec. 23, 2003
KING DIAMOND recently spoke to Metal Reference about the his upcoming live album, tentatively due next fall through Metal Blade Records.

"The musicians [from my band] are currently located in [KING DIAMOND guitarist] Andy [LaRocque]'s studio [Los Angered in Gothenburg, Sweden] in order to listen to their takes [from the live recordings]," he explained. "The real task is to pick the best takes of them all from each and every concert... the guitars, the drums, and I don't need to participate in that. I think that [bassist] Hal [Patino] has joined them as well in order to scrutinize his bass work.

"We wanted to have [the album] released earlier than this, but it seemed quite inappropriate as there was no tour to support 'Abigail 2', and we obviously have to conduct more shows than that if we want to select some of the better parts for a live release. But we definitely thought at that time that we would be able to release a live album."

Asked if the recordings will also be released on DVD, King said, "Oh, no. It's going to be a double live album, this one, and it was recorded on our last US tour, and we almost recorded all the shows for this purpose. A live DVD will probably surface later, and both my record labels Metal Blade and Massacre are interested in joining forces to release it. This one will however feature live material from our European tour, and this is likely to happen right after summertime 2004".

Regarding the group's original plans to record material from both "Abigail" and "Abigail 2" towards the live album, the singer said, "Yes, that was indeed my intention. We wanted to record 75 - 80 percent of those two records, but these plans were as you suggested abandoned... due to the massive illegal downloading of 'Abigail 2'. Our record label said that we lost about 30 percent of the sales due to illegal downloading. That was a bit tough, and we thus had to renegotiate our contract with the record label. We were in fact ready to go on tour in the U.S. and had almost signed a contract with a local promoter when we learned from our record company that they wouldn't support the tour. This is the first time that we experienced such a thing. The only good thing that came out of this situation is the way that we were forced to record 'The Puppet Master'."

King also commented on his contribution to the upcoming PROBOT CD (in the form of the track "Sweet Dreams"), the project headed up by former NIRVANA drummer/current FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl.

"I contributed my vocals to the tracks just before I flew to Denmark," he explained. "When we were about to rehearse for the Sweden Rock Festival. The record label has kept much of it a big secret... which of the tracks that would be released, the cover and the release date. Dave told me to just do it my way, the way I sang, the lyrics and so on. 'Just do it like KING DIAMOND,' he said. I actually never met him, but we corresponded through a representative of his. Dave Grohl is actually depicted as King Diamond on the front page in the newest issue of Kerrang! [English metal magazine]... I refused to believe it, but it's true. He's wearing my outfit and make up. This is totally awesome."

He may be a fruitcake, but I'm dyin' to hear that Probot thing. He got King Diamond, Lee Dorrian, Eric Wagner, and Snake to sing on various tracks, just to name a few. The guy obviously knows his 80s metal. It should be one of the more interesting releases of the new year.

It's good that they dropped the idead of a live album with mostly abigail/abigail ii, especially since nr 2 isnt one of his better records.

Oh, and how does the record company come up with such figures as to how much this particular band lost due to "illegal downloading"?

Anyway, hope to see King D in Sweden some time soon.. Sweden Rock Festival perhaps?

think about the album THEM? I've often wanted to here other peoples opinions on the first 4 king diamond releases.
personally I think Them is their best release. Welcome home is a killer tune. Abigail is awesome too. Conspiracy is when the band started to change a bit. But cool none the less.

What a bullshit story Metal Blade pulled on King Diamond! Oh yes, in the beginning of 2002, there was a huge boost in the number of downloaders specifically targeting King Diamond. But that's all over now, and a a mere 18 months later those same "downloaders" rushed out and bought Puppet Master instead of downloading. Horse shit. They just didn't want to have King do a triple live album. Instead they put money into including a pretty worthless DVD on the new release. A proper King Diamond live album was due apporximately six years ago, to say nothing of a Mercyful Fate live album. Of course Metal Blade just wouldn't do it.

I could care less about a King Diamond DVD; I'm glad he decided to make a CD first. I can listen to the CD without having to put up with all the distracting and irrelevent pseudo stage theatrics.

Finally, having Dave Grohl dress up as you for a magazine is pretty freightening. At least he realizes what a no-talent ass he is and had real muscians sing on his album to help hide his glaring lack of talent and good ideas.

I don't understand how anyone could think House of God was good but not like Spiders Lullabye, The Eye, Dead Again, Abigail II, Time, In The Shadows, Voodoo, or The Graveyard. Honestly, Puppet Master is like House Of God the most, so if you like that stinker, you'll probably eat up Puppet Master. The only real difference is that House Of God sucks and Puppet Master doesn't.

Fatal Portrait is more or less a Mercyful Fate album, 'cos 3/5 of the Fate lineup plays on it. I always considered it a follow up to DON'T BREAK THE OATH.

They need to stop "illegal downloading of Abigail 2" bullshit. The reason for poor sales of Abigail 2 is: it's a horrendous album.

So, why are the sales of Puppet Master better than Abigail 2? Because it is a pretty good album with more than decent songwriting and a solid story. It's the best King Diamond album since "Conspiracy".

To be honest with you i had lost my hope on King Diamond and wasn't planning to buy any of his albums in the future. BUt after downloading Puppet Master, i decided to add it to my CD archive and went to the store and bought it.

Downloading helps me to be more selective in my CD purchases, and i don't think it's a bad thing at all. If your album is good, i'll buy it. I just can't afford to pay $14 to every single CD of an artist without pre-listening.

And by the way, why didn't he come to Michigan in the US tour? I missed a chance to see Entombed as well.

Explain to us please who, exactly, is fifty years old and is singing about homosexual demons?

That's right... WRONG TOPIC DUMBASS.

The reason Abigail II didn't do so well is because House Of God sucked, and the reason Puppet Master is doing better is because Abigail II was reach back to the better KD albums.

New albums are sold based on the strength or weakness of the album that came before it, not the album itself.

HA HA! Funny shit. Even I'm impressed on that one!

KD Releases:
Fatal Portrait
Abigail
Them
Conspiracy
The Eye

Like them in that order. He has pretty much lost my interest after returning to Mercyful Fate.

Although his first 2 back with Mercyful fate are great records. I just wished he'd leave Lars Ballsitch out of it.

Abigail II doesn't get the RESPECT it deserves. Anyone who thinks it sucks doesn't have their head on straight, IMO. Go back and listen to it, dammit! Killer tunes: "Slippery Stairs," "Spirits," "Mansion in Sorrow," "Broken Glass," "Mommy," and all the rest! This CD straight-up has King's best vocal performance ever (see above songs), not to mention sheer technicality. Everyone's performance is top notch on it, and King's tunes that he wrote himself I think are the best he's ever done. Hopefully I have some backers on this, cause I put Abigail II in my top three fave Daimond records EASILY.

Puppet Master is a killer record too, although I wish he had some spots to let the drummer "go off." I put it in there with Voodoo, HOG, and the Eye, although it grows on you more with each listen.

Can't wait for some more live stuff...hopefully the set for the CD has more then we expect.

I should've said that they're ON PAR WITH the best stuff he'd ever done.

BTW, the best LaRoque solo ever to me is the "Trapped in a Corner" lead of the Death ITP record. Chills down the spine!

It does my old metal heart proud to see that nobody on this post gives a FLYING FUCK about Dave Grohl. It's all about the KING and his brilliant musicians and songwriting..as it should be. Anybody on this site know his real name? It's Kim something..right? BTW, the Puppet Master is a work of fucking art, Abigail 2 is actually better than Abigail one in terms of musicianship and vocals, and after all these years STILL...no one can touch Andy LaRocque! One of the BEST metal guitarists of ALL FUCKING TIME! (in my humble opinion)
