Taiwan's CHTHONIC To Perform In Front Of President's Hall - Dec. 29, 2003
Taiwanese metal band CHTHONIC will finish out a momentous year in their career with two more extraordinary events: playing the annual New Year's Eve concert in front of President's Hall and the release of the band's Mandarin theme for the 21st Century Fox Taiwan release of "Freddy vs. Jason".

CHTHONIC will play with New Year's Eve concert alongside the country's biggest artists, including Jolin Tsai, Jay Chau and more. The show will be broadcast live by FTV (Formosa TV). Earlier this year, CHTHONIC won the "Best Rock Group" award at the 14th annual Golden Melody Awards, the biggest music award in Mandarin countries. The award was presented to the group by Taiwan's president Chen Shui-bian.

Though the "Freddy vs. Jason" film will not be released until January 22, CHTHONIC's theme single, "Satan's Horns" is set for release on December 30. A music video for the track will combine footage of CHTHONIC and film clips for a truly horrifying visual experience.

"Personally, I like 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' movies, and my name is Freddy coincidentally," said CHTHONIC vocalist Freddy. "I don't think this movie is scary, but I like the concept that you can't tell if it's dream or reality."

After writing to New Line Cinema U.S. to inquire about the film's release in Taiwan, Freddy was directed to contact 21th Century Fox Taiwan, its distributor in Taiwan.

"I sent an email to them to find out the 'in theater' date and I also introduced myself," said Freddy. "That led to a discussion about a cooperation between us."

CHTHONIC will be at the January 17 "Freddy vs. Jason" premiere and press conference to promote the film. The band will also play a "Freddy vs. Jason" concert on January 31 at The Wall House Live in Taipei. The concert is free to anyone with a "Freddy vs. Jason" ticket stub.

CHTHONIC have released three full-length albums: "Where the Ancestors' Souls Gathered", "9th Empyrean", and "Relentless Recurrence". The group made their United States debut at the 2002 Metal Meltdown festival and returned that year for a performance at the Milwaukee Metalfest.

Very curious as to what this band sounds like. Milwaukee Metalfest doesn't just snap up the first band off the street that it sees and gets it to play. Any idea on what they sound like?

I've only heard one of their songs that was put on the Milwaukee metalfest/nightfall records compilation album, and it is pretty good

Cradle/Dimmu style accessible black metal at heart, but more creative than that implies. They come up with some really cool melodies, and the erhu is a creepy addition to the
standard style.

Hey Space Lord, about your comment ("Milwaukee Metalfest doesn't just snap up the first band off the street that it sees and gets it to play") - yes, that's pretty much how the fest works. Unless you're on one of the bigger labels, you gotta pay to play, so whoever has the $1000 or whatever gets a 20-minute slot. Sometimes a foreign band will pay to come out to the fest themselves as Einherjer or Windir have. When they played, Cthonic was at the time putting out a record through Nightfall Records, which is owned by a dude who works for the Metalfest promoter. I wonder how Cthonic got on the bill? It don't matter, they were good even though they were stuck with shitty equipment on the worst stage.

I wouldn't call that small room the shitty room. I think the best performances were in that small room. I enjoyed their performance at milwaukee. the large concert hall room has too much echo that if you aren't in front of stage the sound bounces off the walls.

I'm just trying to imagine "Freddy Vs. Jason" dubbed into Taiwanese... that'd be a trip!
