ZAKK WYLDE Weighs In On ROLLING STONE's 'Top Guitarists' List - Jan. 9, 2004
OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Zakk Wylde recently spoke to Sleaze Grinder about Rolling Stone magazine's much-criticized list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.

"Put it this way," Wylde began. "When Eddie Van Halen is number 70 and Randy Rhoads is number 85, I mean, bottom line is I have to play Randy Rhoads' shit every night. I idolize Randy Rhoads. I still got posters of Randy Rhoads in my garage right now, in my weight room. I carry them on the bus. I love Randy Rhoads to death man, so I mean, the whole thing is just like, I've got to play Randy's shit every night. Last time I checked, Joan Jett can't play fucking 'Mr. Crowley', you know what I'm saying?

"You've got to laugh at the thing," Wylde continued. "I mean, Joe Satriani isn't in there. Steve Vai isn't in there. Yngwie Malmsteen isn't in that fucking list. Slash isn't in there. They are some of the sickest guitar players that have ever walked this planet. I mean, I'm a guitar player. Do you know how good fucking Yngwie is? It's beyond fucking sick. The fact that Yngwie isn't in it is just fucking mind-boggling to me. People can say what they want about Yngwie, but it's just like naming the 10 greatest singers of all time and not putting Pavarotti in it, you know what I'm saying? Yngwie is a virtuoso.

"Obviously Jimi Hendrix is going to be the patron son of guitar, like Babe Ruth. No matter who hits more home runs than The Babe, The Babe is going to be, you know, The Babe. But the thing is, Jimi Hendrix couldn't play 'Spanish Fly' or 'Eruption'. Technically. I'm telling you. Flat out. Just couldn't do it. Jimi got a bunch of gear that nobody ever had before, you know what I am saying? So, he was able to do it before anyone else, and I understand that, but Eddie brought it to a whole other level technically.

"As far as I'm concerned, Eddie Van Halen should be number one. And then Randy Rhoads would have to be in the top three or top five. He'd have to be." Read the rest of the interview here.

Dave Mustaine, Alex Skolnick,
Vito Bratta, Steve Clark, CC Deville (no glam slams, he was good in his day), Jerry Cantrell, Adrian Smith, Rocky George, Mick Mars, Max Cavalera, Jon Schaffer, and dare I throw in black metal, Ishan, Abbath, Fenriz. It is true that Jazz players can run rings around most others however, there is a HUGE difference in music that most here seem to forget...it's called GENRES....You see, a GREAT jazz player is just that, a great JAZZ player. You must understand, it's all about the FEEL. Any schooled musician or any musician that just stays within one genre is naturally going to excel at what they do given the proper time. Trying to compare players across genres is like comparing white and black. It's IMPOSSIBLE. That's what makes lists all the more funny. Shame some don't see that.

And, if I'm not mistaken, most of us are hard rock/heavy metal players (throw in some blues, jazz, punk). We gotta bitch about this because they've excluded some meaningful musicians in my opinion. By the Way I have seen Keith Richards, Trey Anastasio, Zakk Wylde, Jimmy Page, Jerry Garcia, Dickie Betts...The list goes on and I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE IMPRESSED WITH A GUITAR PLAYER THAN WHEN I SAW JACK WHITE. However, he did with 4 fingers and a pick what was done with 4 fingers and a bow. He is an incredible guitar player despite the material he produces/reproduces.
As far as EVH having no heart??? You have to be kidding.......
Oh yea, by the way.....EVH can't read either. Being able to read does not classify one as a musician.
Paco? Yup, know who he is very well and it's admirable that you have become "your own teacher" or self-taught as it were, but please, if you're going to take on someone like EVH have your facts straight. Alright, firstly, Satanico to some extent what you say is true, however, I would argue that a lot of guitarists (such as Yngwie) are far more versatile than you give them credit for. Malmsteen, whether you like him or not (I certainly don't), is one of the best guitarists in the world without question. Whether Zakk Wylde belongs there, I think not, Hendrix? I dunno, Hendrix really didn't know how to play, but he did cool shit.. I just think when you're talking about the "best" you should be talking about "technical skill" not who "played for the song." Kurt Cobain was a shitty guitar player. He wrote catchy songs, does that make him a good guitar player? That made him a pop writer.

Real guitar players play for technical aspects of music, including Jazz and Classical players.

Oooh! Now we're getting into the "who can wank better" debate, which means that if you can play Yngwie licks in your bedroom better than I can, then you know more about guitar playing than I do. I remember THAT particular fucking debate, 20 years ago when I was in HS (there's the answer to yer second question!)

Part of my point was that A). A lot of what constitutes "skill" for metalheads = sheer wankery, and B). It's pretty funny getting upset because yer fave wanker isnt on the list when if it were objective THERE WOULD BE PRACTICALLY NO ROCK GUITARISTS INCLUDED. For example, I've been to Spain and they have AMAZING fucking classical guitarists that blow away 99% of rock players but they dont get included in RS mag because if yer not popular in the US, they dont even consider yer ass to be worthy of consideration.

OK, so its about genre? Fair enough--RS is NOT A METAL MAG, so they only have about 50 metal guitarists on their list instead of 400. If yer so hot for lists, get yer favorite metal mag to make yer own list and bitch about that. What do you expect from RS anyway???

1) Like MTV, Rolling Stone is no longer about music. Music is merely a small sidebar to what the magazine is really about, pop culture and what's fashionalbe at the time. Rolling stone has no more business compiling a 'top 100 guitarists' list than the people who put together the sale fliers for the department stores in your local shopping mall. They're out of touch with music and have no idea. Wasn't the list supposed to be the 100 TOP GUITARISTS? What exactly was the criteria used to define 'TOP'? I can read. It didn't say most popular guitarists. (I.E. Jimmy Hendrix, no disrespect intended) It didn't say most fashionalbe guitarists. (Jack White) It didn't say the guitarists who've sold the most records. (I.E. Kurt Cobain) HOW THE HELL DID THESE PEOPLE COMPILE THIS LIST? Shouldn't Top=Best?

2)What the hell are you smoking 'El Satanico Dr. Cadillac'? Do you even play guitar? I hate Yngwie Malmsteen's music. It just doesn't do much for me, but he IS a good guitar player, and isn't that what the list is about? I like the Ramones, but none of them were very good at their instruments. The list wasn't called 'Top 100 guitarists that had the biggest impact on pop culture'. Maybe it should've been? And...speed does = skill. Speed is a part of skill. Play a guitar part, anything of your choice, regardless of style or genre. Now, play that same piece 30 BPM faster. IT'S HARDER ISN'T IT. Ability to play BOTH slow AND fast shows skill. You want to talk about elitists, look at your own fucking post! Fuck, you remind me of the narrow minded dumb shits I went to highschool with from the Jazz band. There are so many pretentious Jazz and Blues fans/players who think they're the best ever and everything else sucks. They refuse to give metal or bluegrass or rock or anything else respect. Anyone with half a fucking clue knows there are good and shitty musicians in all styles/genres of music.

As for Zakk Wylde, he's proven he's a talented, skilled, AND versitile player. Do you remember the Ozzy tour where at a certain point in the set, Zakk walked to three parts of the stage, Left, Center, and Right, and played a different style of music at each part of the stage? The fist was classical, the second was country chicken pick'n stuff, and the third was his signature Zakk Wylde harmonic ladden shredd. O, but of coure you wouldn't know that. You're too cool to be at a show like that. A good guitar player knows when to play for the song AND is technically proficient.

El Satanico, you have made a very moronic post. It must be hard to ride on you high horse with you head so far up your ass. Go back to your blick 182 website...or try to fire back at me...either way, the RS list is fucked, and you post speaks for itself. I digress.........

Why in the hell is rhythm guitar playing considered to be inferior? I'm no fan of Joan Jett or Lita Ford, but at least Joan Jett has a cool, chunky, band-driving style, while Lita is a very average lead player. Look at the Stones--out of the 4 guitarists they've ever had, whose the one people will remember in 100 years? Quick, it's Keith, not Brian, Mick, or Woody, but Keith mostly plays rhythm. Can you play a Keith part? Sure you fucking can, but if you replaced Keith in the stones I dont care how good you can wank you would suck because the man has gone rhythm like most white dudes cant comprehend. THAT is a component of skill. Why does Angus Young always say that Malcolm is the real talent of the band??? IT DONT MEAN A THING IF IT AINT GOT THAT SWING, SUCKERS!

(and, "Hendrix just did cool shit
--dude, I've had a guitar teacher who was a classical guitarist who was in fucking awe of Hendrix. Guitarists all over the world in multiple genres acknowledge his talent. You may be able to play his NOTES but you won't be able to play what he played. One of the few guitarists who could was Stevie Ray Vaugn, but he was brilliant, and will be remember long after every bedroom wanker god is forgotten. So why did HE worship Hendrix? Some questions to hurl upon your wisdom:

1) Do you like classical music? or do you think it is talentless and shit because its not jazz?

2) Have you heard Yngwie Malmsteen playing anything that isn't fast?

3) Are you under the impression that you can play anything that Yngwie Malmsteen couldn't reproduce or better?

5) are you stupid?

I personally know several guitarists who can easily replicate the sound of Jimmy Hendrix, with the one exception that they dont rely on shitty gimmicky noises and they don't play as many mistakes as they do correct notes, many of these have been able to do so since they were in their mid teens. You might tell me that your infinitely superior musical ear would be able to detect the subtle nuances of playing better than mine - a criticism which i might accept had you not demonstrated that you dislike guitarists just because they demonstrate technical ability. As slaytanigrind correctly pointed out - to be able to play fast is a skill. That isn't really refutable. Yngwie can still compose fantastic music, slow and fast, on guitar or for orchestra. He is an amazing musician. Hendrix is as famous as he is because he was new, rebellious and different.

RS is a pop mag- plain and simple. Their list is compiled by people who only know what's popular.

That being said, some of you dorks are making lists of players that only YOU know, and having that be the be-all-end-all. Sorry to break it to most of you, but your knowledge of music is probably about as limited as RS.

Let's break it down plainly and simply. What guitarists are/were the biggest influences in rock? That's easy: Jimi, EVH, Keith Richards and Jimmy Page. You can make the point that Malmsteen is technically better than anyone of these guys and that's fine. But could you honestly tell me than anyone was more influential than Jimi? I think not!! Also, to compare his influence over rock music to Yngay is absurd! Jimi changed the landscape of rock music!!

First off, I have to agree with everything slaytanigrind said and disagree with most of what satanico said. And Satanico, if you don't think Vai isn't a fucking awesome guitarist, go check out the guitar duel in the Crossroads (not the Brittany one) movie. And since I mentioned that, Ry Cooder should be in there too. Zakk Wylde has crossed genres, albeit most of them are within rock, but the man CAN play. It doesn't matter if his songs are memorable (which they are), it's if his PLAYING is memorable (which it obviously is). There are tons of great guitarists out there (where is Loomis from Nevermore?). And the one major thing i DO agree with Satanico is: why aren't rhythm guitarists considered great? Granted they arent all doing wankering (are you British?) stuff, but it is the real backbone of any band. I think Mustaine was one of the key people to put an emphasis on being able to be both an amazing rhythm player AND a lead player (where's Chris Poland too?). As far as Johnny Ramone is concerned, he may not be able to play what EVH plays, but I'm not sure if EVH could do what Johnny does (you play one of their songs doing ENTIRELY down strokes). The great thing about it is that both of them are great at what THEY do. And Johnny did all those songs, all downstrokes and all, 4 times faster live than on album, all accurately too. He is not a sloppy player (go ahead, laugh, i dare you)! Having said all of this, who the fuck cares!!!! For all of us who hate one another on this thread there is one thing we ALL agree with: ROLLING STONE SUCKS!!!! Damn, doesn't it suck when we all have one thing in common.
PS - what did the jazz musician say when he won the lottery? He'd keep playing til the money ran out.

Rolling Stone is a joke of a music magazine. Hell, I love the Ramones & the White Strips are okay, but I wouldn't go so far to put Jack White on a list of "greatest guitarists ever". Me, my favorite rock/ metal guitarists would probably be (in no particular order):

- Steve Vai
- John Petrucci
- Jimmy Page
- Vinnie Moore
- Jimmy Hendrix (may not be the greatest, but entertaining none the less)
- Page Hamilton
- Dimebag Darrell
- Adrian Belew
- Robert Fripp
- Eddie Van Halen (not a huge Van Halen fan, but the man can play rock music like a mofo)
- Yngwie Malmsteen
- Michael Romeo
- Devin Townsend
- David Gilmour
- Mikael Akerfeldt
- Steven Wilson
- Tony Iommi

..... That's all I can think of for now.

No one even mentioned him, if so, please correct me. That motherfucker is technically and emotionally impressive. Great Jazz/Classical Guitarist. Download the video of a song called "Speed Kills"

Classical Guitar is where its at, and most of those guitarists can play circles around most jazz guitarists. But all that has been said before, its really all about skill and feel. Hendrix, although not technically impressive, was very impressive with the feel he had for his music. Zakk has even said that many times. Without hendrix, there would be no Stevie Ray Vaughan or yngwie. Eddie Van Halen and hendrix did take guitar to a hole new level, if you dont believe that, put your fucking cds and guitars in a pile and burn them. You cant have a top one hundred guitarist in terms of "best" becasue somewhere there is a 15 yr old who can play fucking ten times better than EVH or Hendrix, just waiting to be discovered, and somwhere else there is someone even better than he is. But you can pick a list based on Impact certain artist had on the guitar world. that being said my top picks are
5. Steve Vai
4. Jimi Hendrix
3. Eddie Van Halen
2. Randy Roads
1. Robert Johnson( he was pretty good being as he was around 40 years before hendrix.)

Those are my opinions, which I can back up with stuff I have learned about over the years.

Stevie Ray Vaughn, Satch, Vai, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Tony Macalpine, Paul Gilbert, Eric Sardinas, Vinnie Moore, Oliva, Rhoads, Rick Nielson, Lynch and EVH..all have thier rightful place in guitar. All played with feeling..
Who was Hendrix's guitar hero? ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons. Was he even on the RS list?

Putting Cobain in the top 20 of any list other than Over rated players is a farce. Just my opinion.
RS will probably include Kelly Osbourne in thier Best Female performers list in front of Tina Turner, Janis Joplin etc..

i was kind of surprised at ZAKK'S over the top praise for EVH. he obviously has never heard BILLY COBHAM' jazz fusion release called SPECTRUM. I am also surprised that after over 100 hundred posts no one has metioned this release or the guitarist that graces it...TOMMY BOLIN. if you thinking of the TOMMY BOLIN of DEEP PURPLE & JAMES GANG, then yes it the same person, but this relase is a few years before he would join either of those bands and sadly by then the drugs had taken their toll. but back in 1973!! when BOLIN guested on this release he pulls of a solo so similar in sound to EVH'S "eruption" solo you swear he ripped EDDIE off. only one problem the first VH release didn't come out till late 1977, 4 years after BOLIN blew the mind of JEFF BECK, forcing him to rethink his own direction in rock and join the jazz fusion band wagon of 1970's. there are several guitarist from this genre that even YNGWIE sites as major influences, such as AL DIMEOLA & JOHN McLAUGHLIN. so iguess is all subjective really. in other words its all a mater of what you the individual like. the poll said the GREATEST, so i guess that would be how you interpert that word GREATEST. the didn't say fast or most technical or most influental etc... the said greatest. so it s who ever you think is the greatest.
my personal greatest would be a tie actually between BLACKMORE & PAGE for reasons that i could right a book on, but that is for another day. i suggest you all find you selves a copy of COBHAM'S "spectrum" release and become enlightened. it is truly a groundbreaking release in guitar playing.

It is clear you dont know shit about micheal angelo. At 14 he was playing Jazz and by 16 won an award for outstanding Jazz soloist on guitar. I even have lessons where he refers back to jazz and classical theory. Not to mention, his classical theory book on session playing. Just because it doesnt conform to a jazz standard or classical standard, doesnt mean it has no elements of either. He has a hybrid skill, all his own in which he incorporates both of these styles. He is a guitarist from many different elements, dont believe me? his albums prove me right. Maybe you need to brush up on your music study. if that is, you study at all. and, just in case you need to brush up on your micheal angelo knowledge, I have provided a link for some basic things.

And he does NOT play classical guitar (not on speed kills video, not in his albums). And the fact that you think that most classical guitarists can play circles around jazz players (ever heard of fusion) is testament to your immature thinking process. Comparing jazz and classical guitarists is like comparing football with hockey. Although from my personal experience, jazz guitarists are a lot more innovative, versatile and interesting than neo-classical guitarist (though you resent that term reasons beyond me, once again, people who play classical music on electric guitar play neo-classical, "classical guitar" is nylon string, FINGERPICKING)

I made an A in the class. I know what the fuck PIMA is and Yeah, there are some strict finger-picking only players, but last I checked, guitar wasnt about conformity. Classical music and jazz both represent technicality in guitar playing. Though you are entitled to to your opinion which is better. I never painted MA to be a God. The motherfucker can wail, no doubt about it, but he hardly gets recognition when compared to Yngwie or other shredding guitarist. I said that He INCORPORATES those styles into his music. You may as well be deaf if you cant hear that in his playing. His background is mostly jazz, you can read that on any biography about him. you might as well throw those albums you own out the window if you didnt know that. As I said, brush up. I saw him play an acoustic fingerpicked set in 98, and the classical sound was pretty clear to tell. your entitled to your opinion, but you are still just an asshole with your thinking process just as immature as mine. Most shredding borrows heavily from classical modes and scales, wether they use a pick or not, just depends on what the fuck they want to do. Fingerpicking or not, classical or neoclassical is way harder than jazz or your bebop rock fusion shit. The only reason I even took classical lessons was to blow some local Jazzheads out of the water. Classical Music has made me a better technical guitarist than any of my jazz and rock lessons.

It doesn't matter that his background is mostly jazz. He doesn't play jazz. Ever heard of George Bellas? He studied jazz in a music school, but his albums are straight up neoclassical.

And once again, if you think neo-classical shredding "blows away" jazz fusion.. Think again. They're just... different. Fusion focuses more on sick tapping patterns, chromaticism, odd rythm and phrazing, legato, whereas neo-classical is more straightforward. My favorite neoclassical guitarists are Vinnie Moore and Tony MacAlpine - they can do it all, and I think they're better than Michael Angelo. Just my opinion though.

But hey, good luck with your studies. If you can pull of classical with a pick, more power to you. What I was getting at with the PIMA stuff is that by the strict definition, fingerpicking is a major component of classical guitar.
