Report: The Perils Of The 'Mosh Pit' Examined
- Jan. 16, 2004
|
|
Jodie Minus of The Australian is reporting that when Stephen Taylor saw the Austrian extreme-metal band PUNGENT STENCH at a Sydney pub eight years ago, he came home with more than a bad smell and a ringing in his ears. "I was stage diving. I jumped off the stage and my mate was there – he was gonna catch me — but he got out of the way at the last minute and I landed on my tailbone. I was down for about a week," Taylor says. It was a brief and sobering encounter with the phenomenon known as the mosh pit. Others have paid a much higher price for the sake of mixing it with hundreds of others in a sweaty, rollicking, lurching and sometimes downright dangerously seething mass of humanity at rock concerts. Mosh-pit veteran Nathaniel Armstrong, 21, says he never enjoys moshing and it is simply a means to an end. "I was young and excited to be there and I just wanted to get as close to the band as possible," he says. Armstrong grew out of moshing two years ago but says that as a teen he managed to push his way to the front of the stage for a Sydney gig by SOULFLY, the new band of Max Cavalera, former frontman of SEPULTURA. "So there were all these SLAYER fans and SEPULTURA fans there. They were just massive biker types, sort of 30-plus and we were like 15," he says. "We were up at the front to begin with and there were two little chicks in front of us who were probably about 11. We were like 'You are going to get killed when this starts' and they were like 'Fuck off, we can take care of ourselves'. And then the first note that Max played on his guitar, they just disappeared, forever. I don't know what happened to them." Read more.

Yeah, it's the fucking pits fault that your friend didn't catch you. Last time I checked one person can't catch another person, there needs to be more. Mosh pits at their best are when everyone uses common sense, and follows the "rules" of the pit. I used to the pit for entire shows when I was younger, but now there are to many assholes that think that moshing is running in circles swinging chains or hitting someone in the back of the head and then hiding in the crowd. When you go into the pit, you go in knowing what the possiblilities are thats why now I go in, and if there are to many assholes, I exit.

i've seen too many neanderthals in the pits who are there to brutalize people. it pisses me off to no end when i end up being on the perimter of a pit and catch an elbow in the kidney or something discomforting. I go to watch the band and for the most part, tickets aren't cheap. The original style of moshing was cool, now it's more like mauling. I'm catching 7dust this sunday and i'm not looking forward to these morons that like to do this shit, but 7dust kick ass live, so I have to go.

I always like standing at the back edge of the Mosh Pit because that is THE BEST place to experience a show. You don't have people squishing you up in the sardine section near the barracade. Plus, you get a feel for the crowd, the best place to hear the music, and if someone is getting to close, you can shove them outta the way. I'm 32 years old, my first mosh pit was Celtic Frost / Exodus & Anthrax on the "Among the Living Tour"... I'm an old fuck, but I'll guaran-damn-tee you I'm not scared to get in the Pit and whip some 16 year old punk ass!!! Get hurt in the pit, it's you're own damn fault...

It's all got too serious now, people think you actually plan on who you hit in the pit. Remember SlamDancing???? Remember when people used to get that big circle going? I would stand at the edge of the circle. It would open up the floor a bit, and a short guy like me could actually see the show! You got hit a few times, but it was no big deal. Then suddenly it kinda' turned into just running around and plowing into each other.

Mosh wherever the hell you want to. I think it's absurd to say mosh in the back or in the parking lot. Obviously, anyone advocating this doesn't know a thing about it. If you're really that scared, then stand at the bar and deal with it.
Nothing compares to a truly heavy show, with a nice, healthy pit in front of the stage. It feels great to be in and looks amazing from far away. There's a vibe to it. Now, I'm not talking about your frat-boy, ass-kicker mosh pit, but the one where everyone is helping each other out, one guy falls, another extends their hand, having a good time, etc.
Last thing: my favorite pit had to be Pantera, Vulgar Display of Power tour, Tower Theater in Philly...it was the last show where the tower theater had seats on the floor cause they were all crushed by the pit, metal brackets were snapped everywhere. By the end of the show, the pit was a frenzy that spilled from the stage to the floor. Ahh, the good old days...

They don't watch the band, yet they take up all the space in the front. They don't care about the band, most of them don't even look like they listen to metal. I'm tired of going to a show and trying to have a good time, watching my favorite bands, sipping my beer when some asshole has to literally grab me and pull me into the pit. Is it so much to ask to NOT be groped by a hairy, sweaty shirtless skinhead at a show? And no, I am not an old fart!

Moshing is an excuse for men to rub up against each other in an orgasmic aggression ritual. It's just an excuse for guys to gain physical contact with another.
I pay money to see and hear bands perform...not to dance with men.

Anna, I Know how you feel! Back in 1990, I re-injured my bad knee at Suicidal Tendencies, Exodus, and Pantara. But since the show was oversold by at least 500 people, I couldnt leave if I wanted to! So I just proped myself up against a pillar and had a blast.
I'll be 35 years old on the 27th. In my younger years, I lived to be in the pit. Like it or not, thats part of a Thrash / Death / Doom / Punk show and always has been. Having been derailed by a fucked up knee from my Hockey days, my time in the pit has long since past. I re-injured my original injury 2 more times (Ramones & Rollins Band) before giving it up. But I still go to just as many shows. If you go and complain, you're an idiot. Any concert-going veteran knows (or should know) the score!
1. At a heavy show, unless it's really horrible, THERE WILL BE A PIT. 2. If You want to be in it, try not to kill the girls and if someone falls, PICK THEM THE HELL UP. 3. If you dont want to get hit, stay back or to the side. Dont stand in or around it and then look shocked if you get nailed!
Thats not too hard to understand, is it?! There's no surprises involved here. It';s all pretty cut & Dry.
It's part of the show - end of story.
"The DUDE"? AS much as you talk about Old-School Thrash, I'm shocked you that you would have such a problem with this. Did you have a problem with this back in the day? You've talked about Kreator in the past. If they come are you going to stay home? Everyone in this post putting the pit down sounds VERY OLD. If you cant hang anymore, stay home. Plain and simple.

I'm with Evilernie and other old farts in this discussion. I'm not totally against the moshpit but they should do it somewhere else. People in the mosh pit are usually not watching the show anyway.
For my case, i like to watch the bands closer and observe how they play their instruments. And i don't just stand there and clap like "Pestilence" suggests. I don't mind being discomforted among the crowd, i like banging my head, jumping, and doing other stuff without bothering people around me. But i hate to keep on watching my back from the mosh pit while trying to watch the show at the same time.
People are talking about healthy pits and common sense, but it's really hard to maintain that. There will always be an asshole who will ruin the pit. And the sad thing is if you stand up against that asshole, the pit turns against you. I have once witnessed a poor guy getting beaten by the entire mosh pit.
At the same time, I agree with horrorbiz13. Mosh pits really look great from far away (as long as i'm not in it).
So, this is really an interesting discussion topic besides the gay comments posted above.

It's pathetic to hear so many people whining about how people moshing "don't watch the show....they should do it in the back." It's the way that people show, at least me, how the music effects them. BUT, there are no more good pits anyhow. Too many people are afraid of getting hurt. The last good pit I was in was 5 years ago. It was madness at it's best, but it was amazing to be a part of. Circle pits are basically non-existant, pits are now weak, and now there are those fools doing that skankin pickle shit doing roundhouses and shit.....it's a shame. I'll keep the pit going the best I can, while I can. To everyone that hates them, continue being one of the pussies acting tough on the side. I've finished my rant.

I'd like to thank all of you who voted for me in the Superballs catagory for my performance in the Pantera pit of Vulgar Display. It was a real great show and I only missed about 5 minutes of action while I made my sling and stood there in my bra, thrashers all around. You know it's a serious pit when guys don't stop moshing to check out the 42 DD with no top on. After the show I wanted to put on the shirt I bought because it was pretty rabid and then all the guys started staring at me but my arm was too swollen to get through the sleeve of the long sleeved hoodie. man if you guys cant handle the pit maybe you should stay in the back.if you talk to most of the bands they love to see a great pit right up front. they say that it gives them the extra energy to go from a good show to a great show.
i do agree though that the pit is not what it used to be.i'll be 30 this year and have seen just about everything so i thought until i went to see soulfly in philly and there were kids swinging backpacks in the pit. fuck that.i love a good pit but that is taking it to far.
mtv did a show about the pit and on the show the old school moshers said that the nu-metal pits are worse then anything.thats because they dont follow the code.when i first started wich was at anthrax and fight show in baltimore at the old hammerjacks the guys at the show dont throw fist and you will be cool.elbows up .not anymore, thats why me and the misses stay up stairs and watch the youngsters fuck shit up.
if you cant handle the pit , get back or meet me at the bar for a few beers .moshing is for the youngsters anyhow. peace

I can't agree with you more, man. My fiance is a little older than me (70s era music ala Fleetwood Mac) so when I took her to her first metal concert which was Pantera, Morbid Angel and Soulfly, she was fuckin' white with fear/in shock! We laugh about it now, but she said that at the time, she was in fear for her life! Now she's pro. I've taken her to see Slayer, Soulfly, Pantera, Metallica, Morbid Angel, etc. All we do is sit in the back or high up in the seats and enjoy.

I think the point here is that what used to be "good friendly violent fun" back in the 80's, has turned into just "violent", without the "good", the "friendly", or the "fun". As many have already stated here, there ar too many punk-ass scumbags trying to hurt people these days. Besides, I never suggested the pit should go away, I just said that if you're going to bloody each other, do it in the back so the rest of us can watch the show.

Frat boys. I went and saw local h last year and this douche crew of fratties started their "pit" which consisted of them running around punching the people around them. of course when people started giving them some of their own medicine they wanted to fight. and more importantly, local h has some high energy songs but they aren't a mosh type band, i'd love to see those preppy fucks at a real metal show i.e. old school slayer or pantera. hell, last time i saw slayer i went to the local bar afterward and they had a cheesy pop punk band playing and there were a handfull of dudes "moshing" there, thinking they were hardcore. I'd be proud to mosh with anyone that has posted to this thread or even blabbermouth readers in general, but for the most part, moshing has gone from enjoying the music and expressing it to outright criminal.

That is the question here. I'll sum it up, short and simple. If you can't take the heat, then get the FUCK out of Hells' kitchen. I'm older than most posters on here. (37) And I have no problem admitting that I haven't got the stamina for a whole show in the pit...BUT, certain songs you just can't stand there with your thumb in your ass and watch...Songs like SLAYER "War Ensemble, Angel Of Death" ANTHRAX "What Doesn't Die, Caught In A Mosh, Indians" SEPULTURA "Chaos A.D. Dead Embryonic Cells" CRO-MAGS "We gotta know" anything from AGNOSTIC FRONT or HATEBREED or OVERKILL. TESTAMENT "Into The Pit, Dog Faced Gods' D.N.R." whatever. This music was NOT meant to be heard standing still. No pit has ever intimidated me enough to keep me out, if I wanted to be in it. Yeah cuts, sprains, bruises, hematomas, broken nose, maced in the face, pepper spray ..it's all happened to me. So fucking what? (you can slam to that song too! lol) Know the risks, sink or swim, put up or shut up. And believe me...assholes, frat boys, steroid heads, anyone that is in there for strictly head-bashing and total violent purposes...they get taken OUT real quick where I come from. Annarocket owns us all she's got balls the size of her tits, obviously the size of her heart. That's pure fucking hardcore. Nothing's more metal than that.

I find it hard to believe that 'reddangel' is actually 33 years of age, youve got the grammer skills of a 15 year old!!!
But still valid post all the same, I dont mosh simply coz the fact that Im too big and I get too aggressive. Its the energy of being in a mosh pit that gets people going, I can totally see why people go crazy. You can vent your frustration and also if you got a good vibe like that going the band also feeds from it and believe a band that has a active crowd will play 100 times better than a band that has a crowd just standing there looking like a stunned mullet.
If someone is giving you the shits in the pit just fuckin push them out of the way, of course your gonna get your meathead jerks in there that are as dense as a brick but that doesnt stop you from having fun.
There are no set rules in a mosh pit so if someone pisses you off you just do what you would do in real life, punch the fucker out!!

I've been to some shows where the moshing was out of control, to the point of people being carted out on stretchers. I think that if you go in the pit to intentionally hurt someone, you need to be removed from the show. Moshing originally started as your own little area to dance and do whatever you wanted. Thrash made it into a slamming into of other people, but THERE WERE RULES TO MOSHING! The little teenieboppers that think it's all about decapitating someone need to learn the rules from the older moshers. When someone goes down, you don't stomp them into the floor! Most of the older moshers will help you back up or aleast make sure your ok. Doc Martin's to the head hurt, so no kicking. Last time I saw some asshole kicking people in the head, I greabbed his bot and threw him over backwards. The little prick went down hard and wasn't kicking anyone anymore. Basically observe the rules that us 'old farts' went by and the newbie's might learn that moshing isn't a beatdown, it's a release of energy.

SATAN or Mr.Durden.... whatever man..... I am 26 years old and as far back as I can remember I hated the moshpit. I didnt like it when I was a kid when Anthrax n Metallica were "good", I didn't like it when Carcass or Entombed were "new", and I have hated it pretty much, well, ever since I knew about it so it's not age. I just have always thought "why would you pay money to beat the shit out of each other??" hell, I can do that in my own living room with my friends but I can't see Severe Torture or Pungent Stench any ol' day in that same living room so I find it strange to pay money so one can beat their chest like a gorilla because they "survived the pit", just seems pretty ultra macho asshole to me. PS- I like SATAN better, Tyler Durden is too obvious. It would be like naming myself "Donnie Darko formerly known as Muxz" c'mon man call yourself "Jack's angry bowel movement" or something, sour grapes I suppose.
ANNAROCKET- 42DD you say?? I have written that as reason #714 that I love you. Not to sound sexist but boobs are great, they can really make a guy's day...... especially mine. WOOOHHHOOOOOOOO!!

It's not a mosh pit, it's called a pit. If you're calling it a "mosh pit" and you're complaining about it, stick to your Metallica shows at the local arena. Jesus Christ!!!... is this what this music scene has turned to? I've slammed with a broken arm with pins in my thumb, had my underarm slit open by someone's spike rings and gotten many a bloody nose; the only time I took it easy (in my younger years) was when my jaw was wired shut. Granted, I'm an old fart (32) now and I just like to hang out at the edge and help a few people out, and maybe have to grab some dickhead who is there to deliberately hurt people.
Who the fuck are you to come on this site and complain about something that has been going on since you were in diapers? Underground metal and, of course punk and hardcore, has always been about slam dancing. Don’t you understand the energy that those “idiots” put out while beating the shit out of each other is what makes the band play better. Ask any real metal band and they will tell you that they feed off the pit. If you’re in the pit to hurt people, you’re an asshole and deserve a boot to the head when you fall down. Trust me, you will eventually fall. Those people were the ones who really got their asses kicked back in the day. Here’s a tip, if there is some meathead throwing people around, grow some balls grab a few friends and beat the shit out of him in the pit, trust me no one will stop you. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to mosh. If you don’t feel like getting involved that’s fine, just move away from the pit, just don’t bitch about it.

You don't OWN the space, so don't fucking tell us to go in the back. Anyone should be able to stand (in the front by the stage) and watch the band without being harassed and rubbed against. That's a basic human right. Maybe this moshing thing SHOULD be looked into by proper authorities....
Anyway, we tell you fuckers to go in the back because it doesn't matter where you do your deed, you're not watching the fucking band anyway. And like Jarlaxle said, we don't mind being discomforted among the crowd. We cheer and headbang and yell and show appreciation for the bands just as much as the moshers do. We just don't look like retards when we do it. I don't even mind a friendly mosh, as long as there's no dorky kids flailing their arms and doing karate chops in the air. The best pits I've participated in were at Arch Enemy and Deicide shows, because there was so many people and really no space for punching and kicking people, just everyone pushing eachother around in a friendly manner.
But anyway, my point is, referring to the above post, why should I move away? I'm not bothering anybody, I'm not punching or running into anyone. YOU should move to the back and go about your homoerotic, shirtless, sweaty dancing all you want. In fact I always stand right at the edge of the pit, to push you fuckers back to your herd where you belong, if it wasn't for people like me standing at the front, the moshers would get out of control and spread all over the the area, hurting smaller people. Which they do anyway. I will never understand the mentality behind grabbing someone who obviously does not wish to participate and pulling them into the pit.

I love metal and always have. Moshing has nothing to do with someone's passion for metal and I am glad that I don't buy into that fake macho bullshit, you wanna break body parts for $$$ the least you could do is go to a bar and do some cage fighting, hell, at least you'll be making the fucking money instead of spending it. I'm merely stating opinion, if you don't like don't fuckin read it. Case closed!

I'll be 38 in March. My opinion is that if you want to mosh, mosh. If you want to see the show, stand in the back. Even before mosh pits started it was a brutal experience trying to get to close to the stage. Once you got close to the stage you had to deal with crowdswells that could just about knock your breath out, people standing on your feet, cigarettes crushed into the back of your head, mounds of sweaty flesh pressed against you from all angles, etc. My first experience with a mosh pit was Metallica opening for Ozzy in 85. I didn't have a floor ticket (I was in the nosebleed section) but I kept seeing these tornado looking formations down there. I remember thinking: what the fuck?

Hey Johan and Muxz, I think you missed the point of my post. The fact is I don't really go into the pit anymore, but i'm not bitching because there's a pit. The pit belongs in front of the stage, that's were it always has been and will continue to be. The pit should be looking into by the proper authorities? Yeah real cool, let's get the authorities involved. If it were up the authorities bands like Diecide would not even be playing shows. Granted, I do agree, that some shows have no business having a pit. The problem is that frat boys now start "moshing" at shows where the music is not conducive to slam dancing (ie Aerosmith, Sheryl Crow etc.). That being said if you go to a Deicide or Slayer show, expect a pit. It’s not about being macho or showing how tough you are, I’ve seen plenty girls (and girls I’m not saying you’re not tough) doing it as well. Most people who are in the pit look out for each other. The problems are with the small percentage of people who don’t know what the pit is all about. It’s still all about the music.

I was being "ironic" about the authorities part. I know pits will always be there and there's not a thing I can do about it. I agree, they do give energy back to the bands. It's not the concept of the pit that pisses me off, but assholes in the pit who obviously aren't metalheads and are just there to beat people up. All they do is wait for a slam beat (while looking bored through the other parts of the songs) to come up, and then start fucking people up. Not cool in my book.
And as I said, I'm by no means against pits in general. I and some buddies of mine started a pit for Evergrey at the annual ProgPower fest in atlanta, and a lof of people who wente there frowned upon that. Everyone was complaining at the propower forums about the stupid moshers during the Rage set. Those nerds would shit their pants if they were ever at a real pit...

"... but the one where everyone is helping each other out, one guy falls, another extends their hand, having a good time, etc."
I couldn't have said it better myself. I recently went to a local festival here in Tasmania, and it was amazing to see the difference in the pits. Bear with me here... During bands like Gerling and G Love and Special Sauce, there was no pushing or fighting, and if someone fell down, someone helped the brother up, because that's just the right attitude. Then Pennywise started playing, adn the floor was filled with 12 year old goths that thought they were totally fucking amazing slamming the shit out of everyone and then letting people get trampled. It was fucked. Those bands probably aren't the best examples, but you get my drift... it's a fan attitude. Since i'm only 17 going on 18, I've already missed my opportunities to see Pantera, Slayer or Megadeth live. Those 3 bands are my 3 favourite bands of all-time, and I would've given my life to be at just one... just ONE to feel the intensity that I can now only witness on a DVD.
