GUITAR WORLD's 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists Of All Time - Jan. 23, 2004
The March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine includes a list of the 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists as selected by the magazine's staff. The list is absolutley ridiculous. Apparently, the mag has no idea what metal is. Sure, many of the listed pickers are awsome (AC/DC is my favorite band) but don't denigrate metal by naming non-metal guitaritsts as the best metal players ever. In my opinion the following have no metal in their bones despite many being awsome:
3,4,5,6,9,12,14,15,16,18,21,22,23,24,25,27,28,29,30,31,33,34,36,37,38,40,41,44,45,46,47,48,49,52,53,54,56,58,60,67,68,69,70,73,77,78,79,81,82,85,90,94,95,98, & 99. Over half are just rock guys, if that for some. Some I allowed to stay on the list are death metal or speed metal which are breeds all their own. Others, are just guys that barely make the rock list (Living Color 7 Mountain come to mind.) A metal list is easy and this certainly is no where close. Just one metal head's opinion!!!

I agree with about 90 percet of this list, but still, the other ten percent had large influence on Metal. I wonder how many people picked up the guitar just because of angus young and Ace Freeley? killer, killer. 9 of thetop ten I believe to be the most influential guitarists of all time. Except for Adam Jones, while talented, influential? I could be wrong, but I was never a big tool fan.

1. Bullshit.

2. Malmsteen is technically
the best, hard to argue,
way higher than 17.

3. George Lynch 47?

4. Satriani 77?

5. Iommi should have made
the list, but not over randy
rhoads.

6. Many may disagree, but I
like the inclusion of Neil
Young.

7. They should have made
them all #1 at something.
Each guitar player brings
something unique. Ace
never was that complicated
but fun as hell to watch, I
think he was one of the first
to bring theatrics in to the
show, and lets face it, stage
presence matters.

Im a bit surprised lookin at the list because its the first ever list ive ever seen that I and a lot of other heavy rock fans would actually agree with. Maybe not 100% but still much better than anything that Rolling Stone or MTV ever came up with. I'm very surprised to see my personal favorite band's guitar player Adam Jones in the top ten. I seen a few posts disagreeing with Adam Jones being that high but I would have had him higher. Tool is one of the few bands out there now a days that has a completely original style and Jones is a big part of that. God how I wish there were more heavy progressive rock acts out there. I just wanted to say to super terrorizer that if you ever get the chance, see Tool live because i think it would change your mind even if aren't a big fan. Its like a religious experience.

Most of the people ranked higher than Dave Mustaine and Chuck Schuldiner are not better than them. Regardless of the criteria for the list and regardless of who made it, they should have been higher.

Those were two standouts for me. Otherwise the list was surprising.

Although the following bands, I feel got dissed pretty hard:

Lamb Of God
Testament
Shadows Fall
In Flames

beaten by a bunch of hair bands (sad).

Ok, this was alright, and i have to say that i agree with just about all the postings. But unfortunately, love him or hate him, you have to give #1 to EVH. Zakk Wylde himself said it in one of the recent interviews. And i am down with tool, but as a guitarist, Adam Jones blows. Satch, Vai, and Petrucci, who placed wayyy lower, could blow his ass, along with many other top 10's away with one string. and i'm down with Korn, but those guys are not really great technical guitarists. Not better than Scott Ian anyways, or half the others they beat out. it was refreshing to finally read a guitar review that didn't automatically toss hendrix at #1. he's good, but if him, Friedman, Mustaine, Wylde and Dimebag had a throw down, they would leave him in the dust. i'm not taking his innovation away, but he can't shred with these guys nowadays. Same with Iommi. you gotta give props to the Godfather of metal, but Murray and Smith will smoke him.

A lot of these dudes aren't metal, but oh well. This is the first time I've EVER seen Tony Iommi get his proper due. Nobody and I mean NOBODY has riffs like the godfather. I like that Sammy Hagar got some props too (even though I don't consider him metal). That guy played all the guitar on his old solo albums and he can solo with just about anyone. In Flames was a great addition too. But they are missing Max and Andreas (how they were overlooked is beyond me) and Page Hamilton. I think Al Jourgensen should have been mentioned as well, I mean the guy practically invented a whole subgenre of metal. And if Munky and Head made it, Wes Borland should be there too (I can't stand LB anymore, but that guy had style). Oh yeah, and no Rocky George? The solo on "How Can I Laugh Tomorrow" alone would put him in the top 30. Props on including Scott Ian and the Tesla guys (who were always way underrated), though. I hope Rolling Stone is taking notes on what a real greatest guitarist list looks like.

All these guitarists are fucking awesome, the order depends purely on personal tastes. Is Eddie better than Angus? It's just preferences, as players they are both equally awesome. A good list, considering they managed to mention most of truly great metal guitarist, you just can't have everybody if you can. have only 100 names. Regardless of the order, most of these guys mentioned deserve to be called "greatest metal guitarists", unlike the supershitty Rolling Stone-list. Also good to see European guitarists get attention, especially Scandinavian acts like Opeth, Meshuggah and Children of Bodom.

Ps. I'll have Aleksi Laiho at #9 over Adam Jones any time.

Andy LaRoque - They have shermann and denner up there on the list. But they forgot the king's true powerhouse. I've never heard Andy laRoque play anything short of excellent.

Ronni Le Tekro was an obvious overlook, too.

Jeff Loomis [Nevermore]
Paul Masvidal [Cynic, Death, Aeon Spoke]
Ron Jarzombek [Watchtower, Spastic Ink, Ron Jarzombek]

The last one really surprised me. I thought for sure that Ron would make the list because the man can just destroy. And hell, I don't even like Nevermore, but I know that Loomis is an amazing talent.

Now, for the few that should most definitely be removed:

The Korn boys

Tony Iommi was practically ignored for his creation of metal guitar until Nativity in Black came out and Sabbath reformed for awhile. And I'm sick of seeing everyone kiss Van Halen's ass. None of his riffs can touch Sabbath's or Priest's. Iommi should be #1 and Tipton/Downing #2. And speaking of riffs, Hetfield might sell more albums but Mustaine blows him off the stage. I think we're all in agreement that this list isn't necessarily the top 100 "metal" guitarists of all time. If they are going to put someone that is considered more of a singer/songwriter like Neil Young at 85, how can they not put Bruce Springsteen on this list? Springsteen's solos on the "Darkness on the Edge of Town" album are awesome, he blows Neil Young away. And if they are going to put progressive rock guitarists on this list, like Alex Lifeson at 36, how can they forget David Gilmour? Anyone with me on this? I would like to think that Gilmour is a better guitarist than C.C. Deville. I mean Deville was in Poison for crying out loud! And how the hell do Angus and Malcolm Young get ahead of Eddie Van Halen? Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley ahead of Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman? Is that a joke?

Yes this list is WAYYYY better and a little more accurate than RS's list..but like many here I think several shouldn't have been included on this list.
They should have just called it Best of Hard Rock/Metal and maybe some of us wouldn't have a problem with it.
The dude from SoaD, Korn, and the other's we all know don't deserve to be on the list.
Personally there are several guitarists on the list that truly CHANGED the way metal/hard rock was done..Eddie Van Halen and Ace Frehley--music was disco and evolving into Nu Wave..these guys were one breath of fresh air in that shit and influenced many a player.
Randy Rhoads was the same..he brought a sense of classical into a genre that hadn't really heard the misxture and has heavily influenced bands like Symphony X, Opeth and Iced Earth.
Tony Iommi..let's face it, he was sortof the first to play the heavy form of music in the 70's now referred to "doom rock".. His riffs influenced everyone from Metallica to Slayer to anyone else younger than him on the list. First? Not on my list, but definitley on my list..
Yes the list should be re-arranged and we all know who WE think are worthy of our Top 100 or Top 10..it's just cool to see GW recognize many of them..Chuck's name on there and not seeing Kurt Gobang's name on it is a VERY welcome site.

How about Allan West and Trevor Peres of Obituary, James Murphy (insert band of choice here), Ola Frenning and Peter Wichers of Soilwork, Paul Masvidal of Cynic, Doug and Terrance of Suffocation, Silenoz and Galder from Dimmu, Gregor Mackintosh from Paradise Lost, Jorgen Lofberg and Klas Ideberg from Darkane, Robb Flynn, Anders Bjorler and Martin Larssen from At The Gates, Andreas Kisser and Andy Laroque...I could go on.

Frenning, Masvidal, Murphy, Bjorler and Laroque are technically better than 85% of the guys on that list, and duos like Obituary, At The Gates and Suffocation are amongst the most influential metal guitarists of all time.

They got it right with guys like Chuck, Mike Amott, Andre Olbrich, Entombed, Testament, Exodus, In Flames, Dimebag, Slayer, Maiden, Priest, Iommi, Scott Ian, Megadeth, Mercyful Fate, Randy Rhoads, Jon Shaeffer, COB, Immortal and Bill Steer.

Eddie Van Halen deserves to be on this list for his contributions to the art of soloing, but not as a "metal" guitarist. Angus Young, Slash, KISS, Alex Lifeson, Def Leppard, Hendrix and the Nuge should be on another list entirely and would probably say so themselves (well, Jimi wouldn't exactly be able to).

Stephen Carpenter of Deftones should be omitted from this list as he is not only the worst guitarist of the bunch, but for his knack for making idiotic comments ("guitarists that take lessons and practice are stupid and wasting their time")

While not a "metal" guitarist, Brian May deserves a spot on the list for his influence on Andre Olbrich alone!

Head and Munky- Neither are great guitarists, but they were instrumental to the demise of the American metal scene and therefore earn a spot (for better or worse).

Although I like both bands, I don't get the admission of Lamb Of God and Shadows Fall. Both are a long way off from carving a significant place in the metal kingdom. They haven't even been in the spotlight long enough to influence anyone of significance.

My only other gripe, if you will, is the insistence of yet another publication that Hammett and Hetfield are the most influential and important of the great guitar tandems of the past two decades. If you look at what's happening in Europe and places where metal is massively more significant than in the US, more bands are emerging with a style more akin to Maiden and Priest than Metallica. (look at In Flames, Soilwork, Darkane, At The Gates, etc.)Hammett and Hetfield certainly deserve to be in the top 5, but I think it is time to give Maiden and Priest their long overdue props.

Trendy magazines can reference and celebrate every decade except the 80's! Why the fuck is that?! If any of these guys came around in the 70's or the 90's they'd be "great" top 100 material but since they had long hair in the 80' they aren't even mentioned ONCE, anywhere. Rolling Stone suck. First I would separate the list into two categories. Metal and Hard Rock. Then I would put Yngwie on the top of the metal list, and I don't really care about the hard rock, cuz I don't listen to it.

Its like apples to oranges.

Kirk Hammett and James Hettfield???????? A second place standing, that is just crazy.

I'm just glad they recognized the guys from Opeth, COB, Iced Earth, and Symphony X...at least they got some things right.

They should do a list called the "Best technical metal guitarists", And another one called the Best Metal guiatrists who weren't technically as good, but made up for it in soul." Cuz there ain't no way Hendrix or Angus could touch Yngwie!!!

Its not about who the fuck you like more, who you think looks better, which is your favourite band. ITS ABOUT SKILL. Korn, Soad and many more of those fuckers are just popular not very good, I bet I can play better than these guys. " I should think the fucker I wish i could have his dick in my mouth has to be there just cuz he owns a insanely cool guitar" NO PEOPLE, LETS SEE TALENT DAMMIT. Darrel, Satriani, Buckthead, Zakk Wylde, Slash, Kerry King, EVH, Rhandy, etc. many of these can play and make sound like shit other player in the fucking list which are higher than them. I don't even like some of the guys I mentioned or others I should but that doesn't mean they have no talent.
Some Thrash guys like kirk and James made songs with 90% being powercords and their solos weren't that good and they are of the highest just because they sold more albums.
Another thing, being easy doesn't mean no skill. They go bashing AC/DC players because their easy songs but that doesn't make them bad at playing. They may not play ultra fast but they got way better sound some guys that hit like 1000 random notes per minute.
Btw, we don't need personal insults towards players like someone who said shit about darrel saying he's better than he was because in 4 years he could play what darrel could. I could do that in some months and still consider him a very good player even though its not one of my favorites. Think before you open your mouths instead of talking shit when you now nothing about

Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Aerosmith, Deep Purple and AC/DC aren't metalbands, and if they were, wouldn't they be a lot higher, especially Hendrix and Page

Also, who gives a crap about Paul Stanley as a guitarist, Ace is THE guitarist for KISS, Paul is just A guitarist

And C.C Deville at 34? SLash auditioned for Poison, but C.C got the job BECAUSE HE WORE LIPSTICK! C.C is nothing more then a pretty boy

And WTF is Nigel Tufnel doing on that list? HE DOESN'T EVEN EXIST!

And why are they pairing lead & rhythm guitarists? like Angus/Malcolm or Ace/Paul. I get Kirk and James, cause James writes the riffs, and I get Dave and Marty, cause Dave is the co-lead, but what puts Paul and Malcolm with their lead guitarists. And why isn't Izzy Stadlen w/ Slash?

And whether they were going for influence, skill, or innovation, they failed hard! Like Eddie Van Halen should be 1 if you're talking about skill or innovation, or 2 for influence

Here's what the top 10 should be, for skill

1. Eddie Van Halen
2. Buckethead
3. Randy Rhoads
4. Yngwie Malmsteen
5. Herman Li
6. Dimebag Darrel
7. Kirk Hammett
8. Slash
9. Zack Wylde
10. Steve Vai

For innovation (As far as I know)

1. Tony Iommi (Making the sound)
2. Eddie Van Halen (Tapping)
3. Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (Fast solos)
4. Kirk Hammett (Angry sound)
5. Glen Tipton & K.K. Downing (Lead/Co-lead guitarists)
6. Slash (Incorporating blues)
7. Tom Morello (Special FX)
8. Scott Ian (He came up with the idea to work w/ Public Enemy)
9. Zakk Wylde (That screech thingy)
10. Nigel Tufnel (Being satirical)

Influence
1. Tony Iommi
2. Eddie Van Halen
3. Kirk Hammett
4. Randy Rhoads
5. Slash
6. Adrian/Dave
7. Glenn/K.K
8. Dave Mustain & Marty Friedman
9. Mick Mars
10. Chuck Schuldiner

The only people I think should be higher on this list are Andre Oblrich (Blind Guardian) and Alexi from COB because they are both amazing guitarists. I also don't understand why the hell everyone puts Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield so high up on the list. I mean, they are both awesome at guitar but really?? Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman are both way better guitarists than them. The list is OK.... but I disagree with some people when they say that the guys from Dragonforce should be in the list. They're fast and all, but they aren't the GREATEST. This list has to do with the GREATS, not all of the fast, technical guitarists. It makes me sick I tell ya......

It is nice to see many of the people on my 'most overrated guitarists of all time' list on here too. Such as Slash, sure he's an excellent guitarist, but you can't tell me that he's better than Dave Mustaine.

I like the inclussion of Daron Malakian. He's has quite a strange style in many of System's songs.

FYI, Eddie Van Halen DID NOT event tapping! Brian May used tapping in a Queen song several years before Van Halen 'invented' it.

And Lastley, I'm sure many of you have noticed that many of the guitarists listed are not heavy metal guitarists. I love Queen but I'll be the first to admitt that they are NOT a heavy metal band. Sure, they do incorporate heavy metal in many songs on their earlier albums, but they are not a heavy metal band.

And please, Kirk Hammett number 2? Dave Mustaine is a much better guitarist and everyone knows it!

Plus I'm the lead guitarist of my band, so of course I'm the one with the 'flashy' solos. Anyway I love their writing style, they're definitely one of the most influential groups to me. Anybody ever seen the 1986 movie 'Crossroads'??? Steve Vai was the guitarist that represented the devil just for anyone who DIDN'T know. He deserves better. And Joe Satriani IS FUCKING BEAST!!!! he definitely deserves better than 77. I'm also with the people who voted against Korn and Tool. if you really pay attention theres not many riffs that AREN'T able to learn by ear. I could make the list with those guitarists way up there.

I agree.

Definitely popularity over talent. I'm guessing anyone who made the best appearance in Guitar Hero I, II, II, etc. made the tops on this list????

Or Rock Band.

However, the list could also be criticizing who made actual 'Metal' or more 'Classical'.

so I'll sort of eat the words i said earlier. Steve Vai is amazing. but he fuses jazz and classical and theres really no metal. this IS the top METAL artists for crying out loud!!!!

Metallica still deserves to own this list. :D

Some of this list does confuse me though. They are missing alot of guitarists and some should be lower on the list than others :(
