TESLA Bassist: Don't Call Us A Glam Band

While TESLA may have toured with POISON at the close of the '80s, bassist Brian Wheat tells Newt Briggs of the Las Vegas Mercury that this certainly doesn't warrant comparison to the two bands musically. "We didn't write songs about fucking our old lady in the back of the car," he explained. "We might have done it, we just didn't write songs about it." As for those that want to lump the group into the "hair band" era, he added, "Without sounding arrogant or anything, I don't really think we were like those bands. You know, we've kind of unfairly been lumped in that category, but we were far from a glam band. If anything, we were a blues-based rock band like LED ZEPPELIN or BAD COMPANY." Read more.

Why do bands try to erase their past? These guys had the pointy boots, the hair teased, etc. Therefore, they're gonna get lumped into a catgory..they didnt have to wear that stuff. Yeah they were more talented than say Poison, but its all about entertainment. I just dont get it...people know they were glam. They should embrace it instead of coming off like they are trying to appeal to the kids..which will never happen. The new album is just so-so, imo.

Yeah as some of you pointed out they might have dressed at certain points a "little" glamed up. The Majority of their carrier was spent with a very striaght up honest look and sound. Now if you only listened to Slayer in 1989 then yeah they were glam but if you know anything about the scene there was definitley a difference b/w Tesla and Poison. If you don;t know - shut the fuck up and listen Slayer (who by the way "used" to kick ass). Tesla still kicks ass.

While I agree lookin back at video s like Modern Day Cowboy and Lil Suzi , Tesla was a glam/hair band and shouldnt deny it , Its what their fans have grown to love . And while it is strange hearin Tesla's new song on radio with Nickelback and 3 Doors Down - ITS GREAT TO JUST HERE GREAT ROCK AGAIN . Caught in a dream is a great song - hopin they make a video and maybe vh1 picks it up ..

I eXperianced Tesla before they were Tesla, they were City Kidd !
i knew then that this band would ROCK - and, well, um uh, i was right wasnt EYE !

I have seen these guys in concert 4 times in the past few years and they are NOT glam!!! These guys know how to rock and they are the real deal...a real class act...all original members...I would definitely recommend seeing them in concert...it will change your mind about lumping them in with sleazy/glam bands...By the way I have also seen Poison a couple of times in the last year and they rock too...just in a much sleazier way...pure entertainment for sure and lots of pyrotechnics and flash...Tesla doesn't need any of that...their music says it all!!!

They weren't even metal from my point of view. The only song I liked from them was Modern Day Cowboy. They were some type of commercial-oriented rock but to lump them together with retards like Poison is off the mark.

glam band?
My definition of a glam band is band that is more into their look and gettin chicks than their music. Glam bands usually had mediocre songs with an emphasis on the ballads, which pulls in the chicks.
Is Tesla a glam band? Well they did have ballads, they did tease their hair, but if you look at their body of music you'll find that most of their music is hard-rock blues...Zeppelinesqe tunes.

Well I wouldnt classify Tesla has one of those type of bands but then again there were MANY others, aside Tesla, who were lumped in that category and shouldnt have been (Dokken, Scorps, etc)
Not to say that that category is BAD, it wasnt.
But my last point is Brian Wheat being ugly and 300 pounds should be the last guy complaining, without Tesla hed be working at Burger King

Tesla did have a few good ones(i wont lie).
but
To be honest ...
They had no gimmick and no make-up and fuck man ! That is what Hard rock is .
All my heros look like chicks (or used to).Some still do .
Those were the daze.
I can see some Zep. in Tesla but there again- I dont care for Led. Zep. either
and I am not afraid to say that from my heart!

Tesla were gonna be paid a million bucks for doing it they say something like.."oh yeah weve always been glam,see our videos ,we had white boots and danced like axl" GLAM BAM THANK YOU MAM.....on a side note; i always thought they were ok but i just find it funny that all these bands that were into that whole glam thing now deny their past.Like i read something about warrant singer saying he was always influenced by punk..he even sported a punk do and chain.I just think they should stick to their guns and not be embarrased now.I mean they didnt mind at all when their albums were going platinum....but what do i know!

So what if they were glam? Glam doesn’t mean bad. Glam bands were better than nu-metal. At least they could sing and play guitars. And Tesla still kicks ass, I like their new album.

Good point made above. But early and mid-80s glam was way better musically than late-80s (very) early 90s glam. The early glam metal bands still passed as metal. Near the end the metal part was gone and there was only the glam part left. Compare: 1984 Ratt -Wanted Man / 1991 Mr. Big - To Be with You
One other point to be made. Tesla were way too ugly to be a glam band.

Teslas def not glam, They are an awesome classic hard rock blues band. Closest band they sound liek is old aerosmith cept with every CD they actually get better as a band should
