METALLICA's HAMMETT Talks About The 'Challenging' Nature Of 'St. Anger'
- Apr. 25, 2004
|
|
|
METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett recently spoke to The Grand Rapids Press about the massive outpouring of opinion, either harsh criticism or praise, that followed the release of the group's latest studio effort, "St. Anger". "That has happened to us since our second album," Kirk said. "Every single album has its detractors, who say, 'I don't like the direction they're going in,' 'They'll never be as good as they were,' or whatever. It's all a part of the game. You can't please everyone all the time — it's that old cliche, but unfortunately, it's true. We realized a long time ago that we should (expletive) make the albums with songs we want to write and play and hear. I love the album. For me, it stops there.
"This album is extremely challenging," Kirk continued. "We confront issues that are challenging, the sound is challenging, the song arrangements are challenging. But by the same token, it's a real honest depiction of what we sound like in the studio before 15 months of production values make us sound like something (we aren't). The mood of the band back then and now is that we wanted to portray ourselves as accurately and honestly as possible, on all fronts. We wanted to move as a unit every step of the way, every four bars. It's very much a band collaboration."
Asked how new bassist Robert Trujillo has changed METALLICA, Hammett told The Grand Rapids Press, "He has definitely changed METALLICA for the better. On a personal level, he's an amazing guy who's incredibly grounded and very honest — and I respect that so much in a person. And his playing is as solid as his personality. He is just a rock. (The band) is more in balance now, personality-wise, and it wasn't always that way with our old bass player — there was always head-butting. He's up for challenges. His favorite quote is, 'Step up!' "
With regards to whether he still talks to Jason Newsted, Kirk said, "I gave him a phone call and left a message on his machine, and that's the last I heard. I don't know if he forgot to call me or didn't want to call me, but I left the ball in his court and didn't hear anything back, so I don't know. ... I keep up on what he's doing professionally. It's hard not to. I just hope that Jason is happy. He chose to leave the band without the input of the people he would directly affect: the band. He made the decision without us. I thought it was unfair for him to not give us a chance to work it out with him. It's a shame, but we had to move on. But we're really happy these days — with Rob, things are more balanced. For a band to be around 21 years and get better is an amazing thing."

The Inner Circle. Often when teenagers need reassurement in their sense of belonging in the world, they join a gang. It's always out of an intense neediness that this happens. Blabbermouth gets its first gang...awwww. I hope you achieve the belonging you crave... Uh oh, am I in trouble?
Those whose fear of belonging is piqued by not being included in the new gang: rest assured, your own two feet are the only gang you need.

I really tried to like this album, but I just couldn't. Certain bands like Gojira challenge the listener, but St. Anger is just bad. However, i do think it's pretty cool that Kirk wasn't a prick about it like Lars is. Lars blames the lack of record sales on the ignorance of the consumer. Kirk seems to be much more relaxed

"Unfair" was the way they treated Newsted in the early days, i.e., spreading rumors that he was gay (isn't THAT ironic?), burying his bass parts on AJFA, etc etc.
Any member of this flower-girl band who tries to say that ANYTHING Newsted ever did was unfair suffers from a dreadful case of Footinmouthitis. Or, in at least 2 Selloutica members' case, Cockinmouthitis.
Indeed, this band has always had its detractors. My question is this: who do you want your detractors to be?

I have seen metallica before, but last night, they were the most impressive. Kirk isnt as sloppy of a player, James was perfect, Lars was interacting with the fans, and Rob was amazing.
This is what I will remember metallica for. 2 hours and 20 minutes of kickass music. Even St Anger and Frantic were incredible. I would say the Highlight was Fade To Black. Just the best live version I have ever heard. Metallica finally seems to have it together again. I look forward to see where they go from here.

Sorry Kirk, but I don't think St. Anger is challenging at all. The lyrics are so dumbed down that I think a four year old who watches the Tellatubies might be the only one who actually knows what's trying to be said. As far as the "issues" being challenging, I think you are wrong on that one. The issues on Master Of Puppets are challenging. If the issues you are speaking of on St. Anger happen to concern , well, anger, then there are better ways to present it than saying, "I'm madly in anger with you," over and over again. I guess it can be said that the arrangements are different, but I wouldn't say challenging. If you want challenging arrangements, look no further than Slayer's Reign In Blood. You also said the sound is "challenging." No, but it is definitely annoying. If you want to listen to challenging sound, try Sonic Youth.

The only challenge of "St. Anger" is the challenge of not smashing it after listening to it. Craptallica has run out of chances. Slayer did one bad album and came back, but 3 straight bad albums (4 if u inclue the s/m one) you cannot come back from.

I can't figure out what's so challenging about a CD full of songs that are, basically, two minutes long repeated until they reach seven minutes, with lyrics that sound like they were written in a minute before the vocals were done, with a mix that sounds absolutely godawful. Other than the obvious comment that it's a challenge to sit through.
The comments about Newsted though...man, leave Jason the fuck alone. Robert Trujillo has been, basically, a hired sideman for his time in Metallica; he hasn't been involved in the writing and recording process yet. Newsted's biggest problem was the poor fool actually thought he was a contributing member of Metallica, when his job clearly was shut up and be the band's whipping boy because Cliff Burton got killed. The mix on AJFA was a joke, and to then get on him because he wanted to make music and Metallica didn't want him to...fuck you Kirk, go practice some more, you might recall how good a player you used to be. Or is that too challenging for you?

Type O negative said it best in their 'bloody kisses' CD inlay. "Do not mistake lack of talent for genius" Kirk, you don't seem to understand that just because something is different and difficult to like does 'NOT' mean it is genius. In the case of ST. ANGER, it is just simply a bad CD. In fact, it is a catastraphy. If it were a local bands first Demo I would call it bad. Being as you are Metallica, and had some of the best metal albums ever made---it is a catastraphy.

I'm just sitting out front minding my own business listening to some music and the Inner Circle Gang did a drive-by on me. They rolled their windows down and cranked up music that I HAVE TO LIKE and kept driving. It was scary. Meanwhile, a kid down the street was listening to music the ICG doesn't like, not bothering anyone, and he received a threatening phone call. On the other end was this loud heavy metal music that is acceptable to the ICG. I think the boy was scared straight.
This gang is taking over...

They're all saying, in unison, that St. Anger is too challenging for it's listeners. Too in your face, to challenging, to honest to be comprehended properly.
It's getting old. If he'd (Kirk) stopped when he said he loved the record, I'd respect that. But, this cramming it's complexities (simplicities?) down every interviewer/readers throat is getting old.
OLD.
Newsted didn't consult them! Oh my god! Call the shrink, and get some counseling. You know the one. The band counselor, who helps them be more honest. Newsted had enough, and walked away. Why stay, and complain...hoping others will change. Like the dynamic threesome would have anyway. They'd have made fun of him, and called HIM the whiner. Fuck.

I think it is absolutely amazing that you people with no lives, no ambition, obviously no talent and no regard for others' humanity can sit here and talk down about Metallica... Let's just sit here think for a moment, shall we? Let's say Stone Temple Pilots put out "Load" and "Reload"... you fucking jerk-offs would have loved it! But, since it was Metallica who put those to albums out, you fucking morons automatically hated it because it wasn't what you expected from them... How many of you are tired with the women (or men) you're dating or married to? EXACTLY the same thing with Metallica... You can't write the same album over and over and never get tired of it... Same concept with St. Anger... Yeah, it doesn't sound great... But it's nothing to fucking HATE a band (or indiviiduals) over!! Grow up you fucking morons!!!

My example: 21 years ago, I went to the record store and I was looking for something new. I found this record, saw the red logo and saw the picture having blood stain and a blured hammer on the back. On the back cover I saw the picture of 4 young metallers, that had a determinant look in their eyes...so I gave it a chance, I bought it, and as soon as I got home I heard it with my friends. When listening to the first chords of "Hit the Lights"...we all had been impacted by a nice surprise listening to that album from this unfamed and unknowed band called Metallica....great album, great name, great straight metal played with full power and honesty.
Kirk!!!! that was an HONEST album, and the next ones were great as well, "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" are three jewels in the Metal Scene that gained for Metallica the respect and fame that was spreading world wide like wild fire.
The cycle of what the band could do at a good and very respectable level, was rounded with two good albums, "And Justice For All" and "Metallica".
YOU got it there man!!! you had 5 excellent albums that gain your reputation and fame (and made your bank accounts huge) world wide, and only then is when Metallica got the tag of "Icons" in one of the most honest music generes of all time that is called Heavy Metal.
You had 5 albums to understand how to keep on doing your music, I don't see any reason that you couldn't scan between all those albums to still continue giving yourselves (the guys at the band) and us, the fans (I am a FORMER Metallica fan since the last 3 albums) full satisfaction, because the three of you: Hammett, Hetfield and Ulrich...decided to stop leading on the scene and become followers. Very fucking sad.
Load, Reload and St. Anger AREN'T what gave you the tag of Metal Icons, those albums WEREN'T the ones that gave you fame and respect, those last 3 albums LETTED DOWN and ASHAMED thousands of fans you gained with the first 5 albums.
On the first five albums you became strong LEADERS in the genere...now Metallica is NOT the Metallica many of us liked and respected.
Don't speak crap...if you and Hetfield and Ulrich are trying to convince us the true Metal fans that your last three albums are worth it...you are just full of lies.

Wow, the day I started posting here there was a thread like this. Now, almost a year later, you guys still can't think of anything new to say.
The reason you keep seeing these articles is because you keep posting in them. Bands that generate no responses disappear from threads.

First, I'd like to say that St. Anger is NOT a challenge. I popped in the CD and played it note-for-note first time out. Trust me, it's not challenging. It's a piece of cake.
atouchofevil: Your attempt at disparaging the Inner Circle has failed. Now be a good little bitch and shut the fuck up, OK?
AIC2: (sigh) Is that all you've got?

The whole inner circle thing is pathetic. It sounds as pathetic as the cliques in high school which is probably where you're at mentally and/or physically. It's a way of life and music, not a ticket to a cult. BTW, St. Anger has some interesting moments, but it is not challenging. Bob Rock just screwed up because he wouldn't know an underground metal album if it hit him in the face. He just simply did a bad job and they just simply wrote mediocre and overly long more often than not music to that botched production job. It's not that complicated and doesn't need to be debated this much.

and there were some hardened Inner Circle GANG members there. And when the manager totally wasn't looking, they were taking extra food in plastic bags and hiding it in their jackets. I think one employee was gonna say something, but an ICG guy looked at him as if to say "I KNOW you have a Machine Head CD at home" and the employee quit on the spot out of fear.

Oh crap! And I just posted another thing about the GANG too. Dammit, well...I guess I'm dead. Man, if only I'd seen the warning sooner. I wish I had a gang too, so I could triangle a bunch of other adult adolescents into this situation to act like tough asses before the ICG kicked our asses... Man...

I apologize for being a little bitch, I'm a bit leary of black metal because it seems in a sense, EVIL, if I should be so bold as to use that word. Maybe I'm just ignorant. If you would suggest some black metal that questions spirituality on a deep level, be my guest, I will be open-minded enough to give it a listen.

the Dude, Blackwater, Opeth Rulz are more like the elders, metal gurus that everyone in the IC respects very much. How is the Dude a hypocrite because of his personal religious beliefs?
P.S. Who really gives a rats ass about what you think of black metal AIC2, liking black metal is not an IC requirement.

johan, but Bori posts news on Jane's Addiction(Dave Navarro) Metallica, remaining members of Led Zeppelin,Type O Negative, New York Dolls, Jimi Hendrix, the Ramones, Aerosmith, and I like Velvet Revolver. I also enjoy reading about the ex-Motley Crue members and KISS, even though I don't really like them. Bori also posts a lot of Jerry Cantrell news to keep me happy. I don't post on any bands I don't know or like.
