BATHORY Mastermind QUORTHON Dead At 39

BATHORY mastermind Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg was found dead in his apartment in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday, June 7, informed sources have told BLABBERMOUTH.NET. The 39-year-old son of Black Mark Records owner Börje Forsberg, widely considered to be one of black metal's founding fathers, died of an apparent heart failure. More information as it becomes available.

I'd Say Quorthorn had a bigger impact than Schuldiner did, because every black metal act that followed Bathory, were influenced by Bathory, whereas every Death Metal act after Schuldiner were not influenced by Death, they were influenced by Morbid Angel, Slayer and early Sepultura, sure Death were one of the first but they didn't have that great as influence

The case is that Quorthon couldn't be Forsberg's son - Boss is just 12 years older than Quorthon himself... And he many times denied being Tomas Forsberg, just read his chapters at [b] bathory.se... [/b] ... And he is also should have been at least a year younger - he should have just turned 38... Maybe Boss's brother was found dead?
Any way if it's indeed Quorthon who is dead than it's one of the saddest days in metal culture to hear such news - he and Chuck (RIP) were the ones who started the whole extreme music. RIP

That really blows. Bathory's 90s releases (with the exception of the awesome Hammerheart) weren't exactly great, but as far as I'm concerned, Quorthon more than made up for it with the Nordland releases. Both of which I enjoyed. This is really too bad. Why can't members from really shitty bands like In Flames or Soilwork die? Anyway, that fucking sucks. RIP Quorthon.

I feel really bad. Quorthon was a very inspiring musician. He inspired both Black Metal and Viking/Folk metal bands. He will be missed dearly. I'll listen to my Bathory CDs for the next couple of days to honor him. Rest in peace Quorthon. :(
It's also nice to see more than 50 posts within an hour here. Nice to see people respect him (except one jerk who only likes his early days)

Was reading "The Truth About Metallica" today during lunch. They said that Quorthon admitted to the author in 1999 that his real name has never been published and any published "real" name was a lie he made up.

I've meet Quorthon in Portugal back in the Hammerheart days, he was a gentleman, didn't drink alcohol or even smoked back then. He was a true viking and encouraged the Portuguese fans to "Stay Conquistadores" (his own words!) i shall never forget that glorious day...He really made a point to all the kids present in the record promo that we Portuguese people should be proud of our past as much as anyone else should be about their own culture! He was my idol....

If this is true, may he rest in peace. I have to be honest and say I've never heard the man's music, but Bathory has been on my "bands to check out" list for a while now. I am very much into underground metal of the early - mid 80's and am already a fan of Venom, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, and Possessed - bands I associate as Bathory's contemporaries. I am probably going to check out Bathory sooner than later now. It's really a shame Quorthon's (alleged?) death had to be the thing that finally pushed me over the edge into checking his music out, but his music still obviously still lives on by the obvious number of mourning fans he has on this site. Since there are so many of you here, what would you suggest is a good album to start out with?

Not just black metal, but this guy influenced a lot of epic metal too. Doomsword, the best metal band floating around these days, has Bathory as a main influence, and you can hear Bathory on their latest album strongly!

"Blood Fire Death" would be a good place to start, since it was like a bridge between the faster/early stuff and the more epic/later stuff. Or if you wanna hear the actual REAL blueprint of nowadays black metal, go for "Under The Sign Of The Black Mark".

Sad day for metal.
Bathory is legendary. Quorthon was a musical genius as so much of his work will show. He led to the creation of Black Metal, and created Viking Metal. He was a pioneer in the world of extreme metal and should never be forgotten.
His work could be raw and agressive.
It could be a genre creating masterpiece like Hammerheart.
And it could be full of emotion and dare i say beauty.
Sad day indeed. A true Metal God has fallen and will be missed.

This is the worst thing that has happened since Chuck Schuldiner died. This sucks big time. Bathory helped pioneer extreme metal back in the day. Every one of their albums are great and definitely worth owning. This is a sad day. I just can't hardly believe it.
May you rest peacfully Quorthon. Your music inspired countless, and will never be forgotten.

Raise the fucking goat's horn full of ale!! I am VERY skeptical about this story, but were it to be true, 'tis a very sad day indeed. I am probably one of very few people that loved the sheer raw brutality of the first three records and thought the later, epic, majestic and melodic Viking material is nothing short of breathtaking. Nordland I and II are indeed masterpieces, and my girlfriend (who isn't much into metal) plays BOTH "Nordland" records on a CONSTANT basis. That's how godly his music is. Every black metal band that ever DARED to breathe owes Quorthon their blackest of souls.

RIP. Bathory was a great band, i was never a big fan, but i did enjoy their music as it inspired alot of other great bands, so if this story is true, then this is very sad news indeed.
By the way, dont compare Chuck's death with Quorthon's, its two different stories and equally as sad. Hopefully this story turns out to be false though.

When I first saw this all I could think was holy shit. However, after looking around the web for a bit and seeing nothing about it aside from reposts from blabbermouth, I think I'll hold off until I see it from Black Mark, or Bathory.se. There have been so many myths, lies, and rumors surrounding Bathory all of these years, that it makes it hard to take this one source alone as fact. That being said, if Quorthon is gone, it is a sad day indeed.

First he should be 38 not 39. Second, on Bathory.se he says he's not related to Borje Forsberg or Boss. I've been following Bathory since '95 (I'm only 24 now) and some of the info doesn't match up with mine.
Bathory has been my favorite band for awhile. I have all their CDs (including originals and promos), all of their official LPs, PDs (including the "Yellow Goat" LP), and most of their cassettes and some bootleg stuff. I also have an 11 inch Bathory logo tatoo across my back. So I consider myself more than just a fan. If this is true it's one of the worst things to happen in my lives.
TO THE BATHORY NAYSAYERS POSTING ON THIS SITE... I CAN'T WAIT 'TILL YOU DIE! YOU ARE NOT TRUE METALHEADS! AND I THINK I WOULD GET OFF IF I COULD WATCH YOU DIE. BATHORY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO HAPPEN TO EXTREME METAL. EVERY BATHORY ALBUM IS A MASTERPIECE (well Destoyer is still good but not a masterpiece). I really like the Epic albums of Bathory, although this guy couldn't sing clean to save his life, it had this kvlt status to it...
It's really sad and frightening how some of the most important people in metal have died in these past years...
Chuck, however, was sort of a death almost expected since we all knew he was sick, but this... out of the blue... I just started my work day and I dont' think I'll be able to concentrate all day...

You know it's gonna be a shitty day, when the first thing you read is about the death of one of the pioneers of extreme metal. There a musicians, and then there are musicians who devoted their lives to bring in to the world the style of extreme metal we all love.
The sorry thing, metal is really coming to age, in a bad way. Metal pioneers are becoming old, and thus susceptible to all kinds of illnesses and such. People die of heart failure ... this wouldn't have happened to a young kid. As the real pioneers get older, the sorry thing is that we are bound to lose many more great musicians. Age is a terrible thing.

This is one of the saddest days in the the History of Black Metal, Quorthon's death actually touched me more than Chuck Schuldiner's. Although both were idols, Quorthon was special and always will be. He left us quite a few albums in order to remember him and you will be remembered. We promise you that, and it's the least we should do in honor of someone like him.

I found Bathory's music after Quorthon's death, such a vast legacy was left behind. From straight up black metal, to pure thrash, then to his more well known viking metal.
I own Blood Fire Death, Blood On Ice, Nordland I, & Nordland II, Bathory, and The Return, its tragic that no more shall come from a true legend.

What can i say about this great charismatic man-singer-composer and creator of his own path in music and also in his life.In his music he fight for his own beliefs and ideals as a Fighter he was.As a MAN of IRON never hunted the publicity and fame.For as long we'll listen his songs,for as long he'll be in our minds and souls!!HE will Live FOREVER!!
