Founding BATHORY Member: 'QUORTHON Had Much More To Offer'

Legendary video director and founding BATHORY member Jonas Åkerlund has spoken to Sweden's Expressen newspaper about the passing of BATHORY mastermind Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg from what is believed to be heart failure. Forsberg, who was known to have been battling heart problems for years, was found dead in his apartment in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday (June 7). He was 39 years old. "It's so sad. He had much more to offer," Åkerlund said. Jonas, who formed the band with Forsberg in the early '80s, went on to have a successful video-directing career, having worked with the likes of METALLICA, PRODIGY, MADONNA and U2. "[ BATHORY came onto the scene] extremely early," Åkerlund said. "People like Marilyn Manson, Billy Corgan and the members of METALLICA have all come up to me and have told me that they listened to BATHORY." According to Åkerlund, it was Thomas Forsberg's creativity that made the band such an influence on so many younger metal acts. "[ Quorthon] had a high cult status," Jonas said. "He wasn't interested in attention, he just wanted to play his music."

If you don't like Bathory or Quorthon then fine but don't start doubting the legacy he has left on the metal world. He was an influence to countless of bands and made some of the most important albums in the history of underground metal.
He'll always be remembered for what he was. A legend.

...but the Viking stuff didn't do much for me. And I will agree with Meta4 on one thing, there were bigger bands that held heavier influences on today's metal scene than Bathory did. Venom was most definately one. Bathory had a huge influence on the Norwegian BM scene for what it's worth though.

shut up man. Even James Murphy ripped you the other day, at which point (one of my favorite ARDY/META4 moments) you quickly backtracked ate your words and started kissing his ass. That ranked very high on the unintentional comedy scale.
Quorthon, RIP. Bathory was truly an influence to many (agreed Venom, Kreator, Sodom, etc may have been as big or bigger influences for many, but I don't think that lessens Bathory's impact any).
And, ya know, I never realized that was the same Jonas Akerlund. Good for him, he's made some cool ass vids.

One of the pioneers of extreme metal is now gone...
He was the true founder of BLACK METAL Venom had nothing to do with that everybody who listens to BM knows and understands that. I realise that most of you are from the States and maybe you don't understand the cult status that He had in Europe. But

Great another founding father of metal dead. This really sucks I was looking forward to more stuff from Quorthon. I'll miss the crazy bastard. Loved his motorhead style riffing, garage production (too bad they tore that place down it would have served as a great memorial or historical place to the man), and his experimentation in music. At least he'll be up there with the greats, Chuck Schnidler, The lead singer of Exodus (I forgot his name), and Cliff Burton.

Why is it everytime I get into a legendary band a member dies or has something dentremental happen in a close approx of the time I bought the CD. I get into Death and Chuck dies 2 years after I bought Leprosy and man I thought he was going to pull thorugh with surgery and all that. Then I got into Bathory last year and now Quorthon is dead. Then I finally buy a Carcass album (Wake up back in 1999 and Ken has a freaken brain haemorrhage thank God he lived.) It pisses me off because I look forward to hearing more stuff from these guys and hear more of their art. Life is freaken cruel people who work hard in the underground like this do not deserve to die. They may not have the respect of the mainstream by they have mine.

I think Black Mark or at least someone close to Quorthon put out a CD of all the lost or shelved recordings to raise money for charity. Like what Chuck's family did. Maybe something for more research in heart surgery and such. The sky is the limit in research. Heck I study at a hospital where they always do research on new surgeries or preventive therapies for the heart.

I cant believe what I just read about Venom and Kreator having a bigger inpact on the scene...How many bands sound like Kreator or Venom these days? ......well im waiting...... how many bands sound like Scandinavian black metal ie vocal and keyboard style? I'm getting sick of people in the extreme music buisness dying. You know why they die it's the freaken insurence. Most underground and extreme bands don't have medical insurence. That's in part for the death of Chuck yes he had a brain tumor but jeez he couldn't get the experimental surgery early because of insurence and then when he did his family had to auction stuff off like crazy to pay the bills and they had to do that after his death too. I'm sure if Quorthon had insurence to get a physical every year something would have been found. Then he could have gotten medication. Then again I think Sweden has a universal health system but the point is that there is not much insurence out there for people in this scene. There needs to be a union or at least a movement to set up a insurence fund. Heck this could be funded through tribute albums to Death, Bathory, Exodus, you name it. I'm getting sick of the mainstream living the pampered life while our heroes suffer and die.

It's definitely true, if Chuck Schuldiner had health insurance he might still be alive today. But noo, in this gay ass country, if you're a musician in a band like Death, you don't get insurance. So, America is the reason Chuck is dead. If they had of given him insurance, his tumor would have been taken out in time. I don't know anything about Sweden medical laws, but i'm sure Quorthon was screwed over just like Chuck was.

:( I cannot begin to express how very sorry I am that this turns out to be true. This man's contribution to his art goes beyond measure and so does my gratitude to him. I do believe that he had MUCH more yet to offer. I didn't know he had an existing heart condition - that is so young to die from something like that. This is truly devastating - we have lost someone very unique and special. This is a very sad day. May the gods rest his soul...

This is seriously shitty news! Meta4 you are a fucking backalley felching moron!! BATHORY was THE mosr intense metal in the early 80's!! He was WAY ahead of his time!! Although the other bands you mentioned were also great and greatly influenced the future of metal....BATHORY was the only one who ALREADY WAS as intense as the bands influenced by him, that came later. Just because you found out about all these bands last year meta4, doesen't give you a place to criticize. All the greatest minds in metal (Chuck Shuldiner, Dawn Crosby, etc...) get dealt a shitty hand. Meanwhile bands with absolutley no talent live a pampered lifestyle while money from mindless mainstream trendies fills their bank accounts. i grew up listening to praying mantis and later foghat and gradually got heavier..iron maiden..budgie,and the like,..on a whim i liked the cover to bathory and bought it and was totally blown away! the straight forward noise was unleashed and i was freaked at first at the speed and lyrics..to this dat bathory and quorthon are icons and quorthon you will be missed brother. this is truly a sad day for all of the true underground metal hedz, as we mourn the loss of a great musician and friend. i have been a long time supporter and fan of bathory for many years and will definately miss the next 15 years as only the rarities will be released no more new stuf, what a shame man!!!! please people, write a many kind words letter to Mr. Forsberg, please no foul language or mean comments, he just lost his son, I would put the email address on the site but i fear the one guy in here writing a very mean unprofessional letter with swear words and comments would email with more rude comments, you should know where to get in touch with the band.

at someone....to much anger in here, he was a great musician and person, and no matter what will be said he WILL LIVE FOREVER WITH HIS MUSIC. so ignore the rude comments, and just enjoy the music he has made for us, and the time we have left on earth, we are a lucky bunch to be alive in these times of great music, we are but a insignificant speck in the timeline of earth, so just be happy we are living in the time and had the chance to know quorthin through his music and lyrics. hail Quorthon, HAIL THE HORDES!!!

does any one know the real name of quorthon, he was so serious about the underground type music, he is now gone and no one knows his real name, it is not tomas forsberg, he used the name peter forsberg in a interview (hockey player) and later said he was joking and used the namd tomas forsberg , which is also a known alias. if any one knows the real name please post it upon the site. thank you and we will miss you!

Quorthon DID NOT do drugs!! He did'nt even smoke.. He was a real sports enthusiast and he loved music! He was a great musician and an exellent song writer. He had a heart of gold and was the most exellent and intelligent man you could ever imagine.. Whatever you think about his music is NOT the issue!!! Pay RESPECT to him at least by NOT writing shit about him!! This is not a joke, he is dead and it killing me inside.. I lay awake at night and I can't imagine anything worse could ever happen to me.. I will miss him every day for the rest of my life and I pay all my respect to his father and the rest of the family.. I know he is amongst us.. He know we will always love him and there is a candle burning at my bedside every night for him..
