Therapist: JASON NEWSTED Had The Courage To Stand Up To Other Guys In METALLICA
- July 30, 2004
|
|
In a recent interview with The Kansas City Star, METALLICA's former "performance coach" Phil Towle spoke about being present when former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted told the band he was leaving, though that scene isn't in the METALLICA documentary "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster". Asked how that went down, Towle said, "We'd been sitting around talking for about a half-hour when Jason says to me, 'I want to talk to the guys. Will you excuse me?' So I went into the other room in the suite. I could hear all this pain resonating from the room they were in, and after about 10 minutes, I went back in. Jason says, 'I don't want you in here.' I said, 'I was hired to be here, to work with you guys and your issues, and I can't in good faith stay in the other room.' There was silence. Then Lars says, 'Let him stay.' "They were all jarred so much that a family member for 14 years was leaving for various reasons. They said, 'We gotta do something about this.' Here's what I offered: Rather than invest energy in being pissed at Jason, use this thing to explore the underlying issues of discomfort and conflict that led to his leaving. "In a very dysfunctional family, Jason had the courage to stand up. He was the one who set in motion this process of calling everyone out. I'd read an old interview with METALLICA in Playboy in which the band members separately trashed each other. So now the conflict had come to a head." Towle also spoke about the scene toward the end of "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" documentary where he and James and Lars get into it over Phil's continued role with the band. Asked what happened there, Towle said, "The band was going through a moment of indecision about whether to continue with me and on what terms. I needed an answer. I said I gotta know because I'm thinking about moving out here. Off camera we had talks about continuing. So I really felt a little ambushed. I felt I'd had one understanding where I'd do it part time to resolve some issues. "But it was also difficult for me to think about leaving. … I was with this one client every day for almost 2 1/2 years. We started with 2- and 3-hour sessions, and then when things heated up as they made the album, I was in the studio every day. I just didn't want to leave the process, the intimacy. And I thought we had a deal in place. But, you know, the thing to come out of that was Lars coming to James' support. That really cemented things between them." jason was like a second cliff, and although some say he lacked the energy for tha band, he did a kick ass job while he was there. just look at my friend of mysery. if anyone has seen the "Classic Albums" black album tribute dvd, you'll see just how cool he wrote that riff. if that whole riff had beenin there, it would've been so much different. and i hardly think he was the only credible thing about them. As basic as lars drum beats were, he gave the songs the beats they needed, he didnt show off his skill so he copuld be known as the best drummer of all time, if he had done that they would be true sellouts. kirks lead stuff is awesome, i havnt seen one song of his that has a shit solo in it. james' rhythm is kick ass, it started drifting after black, but before that it was so good. if you have heard them live, ud love em
p.s the whole of st.anger on cd isnt as goof as hearing it live. live they add so much good shit 2 it, and if it had been done like that in the studio, itd b more creditted as a good album

Sure Jason Kicks ass, but if people are going to say Jason was the only true Metal god in the band because he left after the loads because he wasn't happy with them and then missed out on St Anger, but yet forget to mention he did do a soft rock cd in Echobrain and turned Voivod into hard rock. It must be said. He has a soft side too

Hell man, I aint saying Jason was the only true metal god in Metallica, they ALL are.
And as for soft sides, I personally feel that the BEST metallers have soft sides as well as rock sides, Ozzy for example is soft as shite but he is fucking great, Metallica have soft, Maiden have soft, Lemmy has a soft side (did you know he wrote "mama im comin home"?). The softer side of metal is a time to show some truly great musical skill,
My old drum teacher once told me, "To play slowly requires much more skill than playing fastly, if you play slowly, everyone can hear every note and beat, therefore can easily tell when you make a mistake. If you constantly play fast, you can fuck up loads and no-one can tell the difference!"
I for one, totally agree!
in summary, TRUE HEAVY METAL is so flexible and so totally awesome.
Rock on
Metal up your ass!

"Maybe the last album is a bit rocky," Thats what I was referring to. try reading before you open your decayed pie hole. They made a drastic change and is it coincidental that Jason just joined the band. No it's not. They went from a respectable thrash band to a hard rock, maybe metal band. Any person that has heard this cd has said the same thing that Jasons presence in the band downgraded it.

if you dont give a fuck so much then why post here? at least have a point that goes with your post and not just a "i love metallica i need to support them" rambling.
As for this news bit i mean what a crock of shit, why is it that all this shit is continously rammed down our fucking throats? i thought metallica musicians not reality tv stars......maybe they should focus on making a good album and not making films and books about bollocks, i sure as hell dont want to know about it......but at the end of the day i guess it will sell because it has the all mighty Metallica name on it! and the fact that they like to diversify to make more $$$$$ they lost all credibility with the black album ("we want to make a more radio friendly album" hmm and why would that be $$ maybe?) Bullshit
Anyway im hungover and this is just my rant : )

Jason is a great metal bass player, but more than anything he's a musician, not a rock star. Kirk too is a musician, but he's stiffled by crap that Lars and James make him put up with. Jason left because he wanted to perform music again, not have to deal with the children who run metallica. If metallica want the respect that they had before they cut their hair off... ...maybe they should make music again and stop this "feeling" bull shit. I hope Jason goes far in his musical pursuits and i hope metallica do us all a favor and disband.

LMAO. If he was their "performance coach", he wasn't doing his job very well. Yeah, we bash 'em, because they're whining, greedy millionaires who need a "performance coach" while truly talented bands like Opeth, The Crown, Suffocation, Testament, Misery Index, etc. who can play rings around them, well, mostly Lar$, struggle to get by financially. One of my favs, The Crown, did split because of the financial problems. How many times do you hear about someone calling it quits at least partially because of financial reasons? There's just a tiny-bit of an injustice kind of feeling it that which is most ironic. So fuck yeah, we'll bash em.

I have seen the movie even though I am no longer a fan of Metallica. The reason I saw it was because I USED TO BE and they are the band that got me into metal in the first place.
The scene where Jason tells about why he left and where Dave Mustaine reveals he wishes he could go back in time and go to AA rather than ever get kicked out of Metallica are amazing. They are worth the cost of admission alone.
Jason rules.

Its sad when a band does a cd the way they want it and people rip it to shreds cause it doesn't sound like mop. And if I have to hear one more idiot comment on the production im going kill my freaking self. Thats how they wanted it to sound, I wish every band would record like this.

Voivod really sux! Jason really fucked them up big time! Voivod kicked ass until Ja$onic joined them actually. He left Echobrain cuz they didn't have good record sales and the majority of his fans didn't really give a flying shit about them, so he found a new band to take advantage of. Ja$onic got really quiet since after Voivod did that touring last year and it wouldn't surprise me if he drops Voivod too, so I'm sure an announcement will be posted that he's leaving....just give it some time. Ja$onic will most likely join another band again and leave them too.
