ALICE COOPER: Anti-BUSH Rockers Are Guilty Of Treason - Aug. 23, 2004
ALICE COOPER has told the Canadian Press that all the rock stars campaigning for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry are guilty of one thing: treason. The shock-rock legend, a staunch Republican who attends NBA games in Phoenix with Arizona Senator John McCain, was disgusted when he learned of plans by Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, R.E.M. and other bands to hold a series of concerts aimed at unseating U.S. President George W. Bush.

"To me, that's treason. I call it treason against rock 'n' roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics," says the 56-year-old Cooper, who begins a 15-city Canadian tour on Aug. 20 in Thunder Bay, Ont.

"When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the ROLLING STONES as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.

"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."

Despite his strong insistence that rock has no place in politics, Cooper is one of just a handful of high-profile musicians who've proclaimed support for Bush.

Treason? How the fuck is it treason to speak out against the United States Government? This is exactly what the Shrub propaganda machine wants is to scare people into voting for him. If you play music and you support anyone other than Bush it's treason. In case this ignorant old bastard forgot, treason is a very serious crime punishable by death. To speak your mind disagreeing with the presidents policies is not treason, it's called FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!! Rock 'n' Roll is not about politics, it is the anti-thesis of politics, so getting into politics when you are supposed to be rock 'n' roll is Treason against Rock 'n; Roll.

You get me?

Personally I couldn't care less,

And, Alice IS a Bush supporter. I disagree with him though. I think he should speak out with his music and on stage. It's time for an alternative voice against all these liberal wackos who actually believe that Bush is no better than Saddam Hussein. GIVE ME A FREAKIN' BREAK.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Law Enforcement :
I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver's license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been "lost" and is not available.

Military:
I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.

College:
I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. I was a cheerleader.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE:
I ran for U.S. Congress and lost. I began my career in the oil business in Midland, Texas, in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn't find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock. I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money. With the help of my father and our friends in the oil industry (including Enron CEO Ken Lay), I was elected governor of Texas.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS:
I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America. - I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money. I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history. - With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida, and my father's appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President after losing by over 500,000 votes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT:
I am the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record. I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week. I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury. I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history. I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period. I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period. I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market. In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues every month. I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My "poorest millionaire," Condoleeza Rice, has a Chevron oil tanker named after her. I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President. I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations. My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. History: Enron. My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to ensure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.

I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or prosecution. More time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip-offs in history. I presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed. I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history. I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts. I appointed more convicted criminals to administration than any President in U.S. history. I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States government. I've broken more international treaties than any President in U.S. history. I am the first President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission. I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law.

I refused to allow inspector's access to U.S. "prisoners of war" detainees, and have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention. I am the first President in history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. elections).I set the record for fewest numbers of press conferences of any President since the advent of television. I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one-year period. After taking off the entire month of August 2001, I presided over the worst security failure in U.S. history. I garnered the most sympathy ever for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most hated country in the world---the largest failure of diplomacy in world history. I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the record for protests against any person in the history of mankind. I am the first President in U.S. history to order an unprovoked, preemptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. citizens, and the world community. I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families in wartime.

In my State of the Union Address, I lied about our reasons for attacking Iraq and then blamed the lies on our British friends. I am the first President in history to have a majority of Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security. I am supporting development of a nuclear "Tactical Bunker Buster," a WMD. I have so far failed to fulfill my pledge to bring Osama Bin Laden to justice.

RECORDS AND REFERENCES:
All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my father's library, sealed and unavailable for public view. All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view. All records or minutes from meetings that I, or my Vice-President, attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public review.

PLEASE CONSIDER MY EXPERIENCE WHEN VOTING IN 2004!

but please dont expect any detailed explaination from me this time, for politics are not my game at all. I've always thought of it this way: Rock music is music of rebellion, and as long as there's politicians, who personify practicality in all its various forms, there will be musicians to question and oppose it, since rock is the embodyment of individualism and expression. Practicality and creativity always clash. To perform political songs on albums and regular concerts is one thing, to use your talent as an avenue of possible manipulation, and organizing a joint-project with the specific purpose of attempting to oust your country's leader, is pompous at best, and cheapens your art and talent.

This post is simply common sense, ya'll. It's the old practicality vs. creativity bullshit. I do believe one thing with no hesitation...If youre going to play a concert, play it for a benefit, and to celebrate something, or just groove. Don't taint your music with a message as strong as ousting the president. If you're going to make a political statement, call a press conference. Make a video, or short program and broadcast it through an independant television and radio resource. Start a newspaper, or a magazine. Musicians should make their political statements in the same manner as any other American citizen. Anything else, it's simply a very loud, obnoxious demonstration on par with the obnoxious Act-UP and Peta, who amount to nothing but sound and fury, signifying very little by way of difference-making. ya know? I could be looking at this all weird, but that's how i see it. Sorry.

Alice isn't out doing anti-Kerry concerts. Alice isn't doing ANYTHING to try to persuade your vote. He supports Bush... big deal. Everyone, musician or not, should support a candidate. The difference is that Alice isn't waging a campaign for Bush and the only reason we know he supports him is because he was asked about it in an interview. When Alice says, "Rock should never be in bed with politics", he means that rock should not take an active role in trying to affect people's votes. He doesn't mean a rock musician can't have an opinion. His point is that musicians should not consider themselves political experts and should stay OUT of active politics, which he does. How is that hypocritical?

It's interesting to me that Alice made this statement, because it's addressing something that has been of concern to me for a while now.....I understand why some of you feel that musicians should in fact speak out politically, but I think perhaps a part of what Alice is getting at here is the fact that it's a very misguided idea for anyone to base their political beliefs or cast a vote for whomever your favorite rocker is for/against. Many of us have enough common sense to be able to think for ourselves, but many MANY young voters nowadays are basing their votes on what they see and hear on MTV and such. And that's a scary proposition. Alice knows as well as anyone that a majority of these outspoken "stars" know as much about politics as they do about quantum physics. It's not to say that there aren't some well informed, intelligent rock stars out there, but on the whole most of these people haven't any more of a fucking clue than the BillyJoeJimBob living down the street from you. But since they are "stars", their voices are heard more and people put more stock into those opinions. There's just too many misinformed, uneducated voters out there, and I'm sorry, but listening to R.E.M or System of a Down is just not going to solve that problem.
And I agree, I listen to music as an escape from the problems and bullshit of the real world. That's not to say that I only listen to music if it has "fantasy" subjects, not at all. I just don't like having my music preach their beliefs at me, political, religious, or otherise. Regardless of whether or not they coincide with my personal beliefs or not.

When I turn on MTV, and I see the "news" reports on the election and they talk to the "young voters", and I see two giggling 19 year old girls talking about the election and wearing shirts that say "Edwards is a hottie!", and I realise that it's basic retarded thoughts like that which fuel alot of our young voters to vote, it makes me think more and more about how nice Finland might be to reside in for a while LOL

...OK, Alice says that it's treason for rock n' roll to be mixed with politics, so therefore musicians who support Kerry are guilty of treason. Fine and dandy. Why then is it not treason against rock n' roll for Alice to support Bush? Ted Nugent is very actively supporting Bush's campaign--is he guilty of treason as well? Or, does that apply only to rockers who support Kerry?

I find this kind of logic quite common among Bush supporters: it was OK to be against Clinton on Kosovo, but being against Bush on Iraq was "treason." Why the double standard?

The only thing you people want is Bush out of office. You have no soap box to stand on. You have no valid reason why he should be out of office. And you sure as FUCK do not have any goddamn solutions to the War in Iraq/War on Terrorism. All you wish is for Kerry to give you all a shitload of money so you can lock yourselves up in your rooms and feel safe, and not have to deal with the fact that America is the number one hotspot for terrorists to take away our way of live and our sense of freedom. Why do some of you make the assumption that anyone and everyone who supports George W. Bush is a "fucking idiot"? That's one of the stupidest generalizations I've ever heard. I can't imagine being ignorant enough to think that just because someone supports John Kerry, that makes them an idiot. I have plenty of intelligent friends who support Kerry, and I don't think any less of them because of that.

If you're one of the morons making gross generalizations like that, then the real idiot is YOU.

Now there is nothing wrong with hating the president. In fact the guys is a moron but look at the administration. Do you really think Kerry will support Stem Cell research and back off of the gays? Will he "fix" IRaq and will he be tough on terrorists? Alice is correct in that Musicians shouldn't spew their uninformed propaganda no matter if leans to the right or left. I mean they have every right to do it but educate people instead of using your celebrity to influence people. Believe it or not, most Americans are to stupid to read between the lines and see what is really going on. Yeah the Bush administration is corrupt and really messed up some things but Kerry and his administration will make it worse and we will get attacked again under Kerry's watch.

He has floundered on issues back and forth depending on what favors he needed at the time. And please vote for a 3rd party. All of those votes will only help Bush get back into office. As for bush, anyone who supports him must have some strange brain disorder, now, I am not saying that he is a horrible person, he is just a horrible leader who is nothing more than a puppet for DIck Cheney (sp?) and other assholes like that. If bush wins this election, rather, if bush buys this election as he did the last one, then there will not be a democracy at all in america, it will just be a nice dream of what should be, instead, we will be living in a military state where the bill of rights and the constitution will be nothing more than paper to wipe your ass with. ANd, by the way, if you did not know, the freedom of speech ammendment is gone, thanks to the good ol' patriot act. read the facts available online and everywhere else aside from major media before you think about supporting bush and his evil agenda. to blood from the soul, there are alot of valid reasons why bush should be out of office. the war in iraq was unjustified and saddam never posed a threat to the US, he did not even have any fucking military or weapons for that matter. Second, Kerry is an asshole as well, so its really a choice of having a horrible president serve another destructive four years which could bring america to its knees, or elect a candidate who might do something to make this country better, though i doubt he could after how much bush fucked it up. And last, I support the troops one hundred percent, but as you might know, the moral in Iraq is very low and even the troops understand that they are dying and fighting for their lives for no reason what so ever. No one can give a reason for why we should have 1000+ soldiers killed so far in Iraq. And that to me is the worst crime and Bush should be put on trial and hanged along side saddam. Well, actually dont blame bush, he is not smart enough to order all of this, its really the ones who are in office who are controlling him to make all these insanse decisions on our countries safety. Whatever, Listen to music which talks about drugs and having fun and ignore the world affairs if you want, but let the rest of us who actually care about the world around us express our views through music and various other outlets. Punk rock might suck, but atleast they have strong opinions which is more than I can say for alice cooper or anyone else who supports bush but cannot give a reason as to why.

If these people wanna do a concert series to bash Bush then whatever, it's their right to do it if they want. I just don't like when during normal concerts (i.e. Sprinsteen) artists just take a huge break to go on a political tirade. If you're there to rock then just rock. If you're going on a tour specifically aimed at bashing the pres. then okay I at least know not to get a ticket if I don't wanna sit through that. Now if the artists want to put out protest song/whatever then that's cool with me because music is their forum. I didn't want to pay $100 for Springsteen's last concert, to hear a 20 minute speech....now if he wants to go out and sing "Born in the USA" or "41 shots" then that's a completely different story.

In this case, my personal opinions aside, if they wanna fund this project or have someone funding it for them, then sure it's their right to do it.

I agree more so with a syndicated radio personality located in NY who put a good point forward.....'18 - 25 is the age group with the lowest presence when it comes to the voting....why not have these artists (who easily reach out to this target audience) do a tour getting kids to vote in general, as opposed to going out and just saying who to vote for?'

As dedicated as I know these artists are to the project of "Get Bush Out," I think more good would come from inspiring kids who look up to you to just become more involved PERIOD

under the bush administration, we probably have a *higher* chance of getting attacked. look at spain - they attacked and the population ousted the right wing regime that supported bush. educate yourselves on the reasons the muslim extremists hate us. it's not because they resent our freedoms or capitalism, per se, but for all our interference in their world, which goes back a long, long ways far before the iraq war, desert storm, etc. now that we've invaded iraq and gotten rid of saddam, and there is no hard evidence of wmd, they feel they're justified in feeling we're an evil, warmongering empire and they want to take us down more than ever. not just that, but with this new ammunition of america's transgressions, the extremists are winning over average citizens to come over to their point of view. it's a very precarious position and one that bush would do well to address, but even after the 9/11 commission findings (which were BIPARTISAN, something of which every american should take note, fuck this liberal vs. conservative shit, it's dangerous mob mentality), it doesn't seem bush is interested in finding solutions to this increasingly volatile problem

we are living in the divided states of america. while we're all fighting stupidly about liberal vs. conservative, etc, we are in danger of losing our focus as being united as americans, esp now that the world has a much lower view of us. we're vulnerable to attacks, more than ever.

i'm a registered independent...but i feel bush is not a true leader. a true leader would be doing what they can to heal this huge wound that is dividing our country. instead, he's serving his own interests. that's not the mark of a true, strong leader. would kerry be better? from what i've seen, i'm not sure, i just know our country is worse off than it was 4 years ago, and other than the lower and middle classes rising up and taking our country back, our sane option is to oust bush in a legal manner. do i think it will happen? i totally don't know, i don't know if america is committing suicide or not yet. remains to be seen.

rome fell, and so can we. many politcal analysts see the same corruptive symptoms in us now, and we may be heading for a fall.

quite honestly our govt is full of rich elitists, dems or repubs, that serve their own interests. we need a change, for real. maybe we really do need another revolution. fuck the corporate elite.

WASHINGTON, DC—Republican congressmen lambasted the documentary Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster for its "gross inaccuracies and fabrications" Monday. "[Filmmakers] Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky are clearly biased," Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert said.

All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my father's library, sealed and unavailable for public view. All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view. and really, he said nothing WRONG, and nothing supporting Bush or war or anything!!!

Seriously. Scroll all the way back up and READ IT!

He was talking about people using their celebrity, their'rockstar' status to express a view that otherwise would not be heard. I said basically the exact same thing in my rant up there earlier. Keep music music, and keep politics politics!! Using music as a weapon against our President is pompous, especially when youre using art as a way to make a political statement you have no right making. What makes Springsteen more worthy to talk politics than any of us on here??? Nothing, and thats all Alice was trying to say, and youre ripping him apart for it.

He's not saying democrats or republicans or Ralph or ANYONE is right or wrong. He's talking about rockstars who think they know better, and think they have a right to pontificate because they are celebrities. If youre gonna be political and public about it ,BE A POLITICIAN, not a ROCKSTAR!

He's saying being overly-political is treason against ROCK MUSIC! Not against our government. Not against Kerry not against Bush, he's against pompous rockstars. Do any of you see Alice rallying a concert to KEEP Bush in office??? No.

My Lord, people. READ!

you people take your politics way too seriously. bush is not the devil incarnate. michael moore had to splice tape together to make his point, and poorly at that. frankly, its almost an embarassment how little Americans support a president in a time of war.

I am not talking about voting against. everyone should vote their conscience. the fabrication of stories and demonization of the president only hurts our nation. it is amazing that we are suddenly creating the same type of propoganda as those that would destroy us from outside.

If we were not at war I would be voting against bush for many reasons, ranging from faith based funding, stem cell research, the environment, the expansion of medicaire, continuation of a ridiculous drug policy and others.

Bush however is a war president and a damn good one. Maybe some of us have become to used to instant gratification and planning via excel spreadhseet. War is not a "clean" endeavor. It requires tactical flexibility.

I wont argue about how the war is waged. Frankly I would never presume that I knew better than the officers in the field how to perform their mission. I will however look at what has been accomplished.

1. We have a base of military operations in the middle east where we can defend, cajole and otherwise encourage those nations to help us in the war on terror. Although many will tell you that we are causing more trouble by being in the middle east, it is quite necessary for us to bolster our friends and threaten enemy states.

2. We have a base for intelligence operations in the mid east. Consider the importance of this alone in curbing terror.

3. We are on the border of Iran, just in time to prevent them from going nuclear.

4. We can bolster the Saudi government in the event of a religious uprising. Frankly, this is huge. Bush would be derelict in his duties if he did not do everything he could to keep the Saudi government stable.

5. We could not land any quantity of troops in the mid east without going through the persian gulf. We could not risk a hostile nation on the gulf. Even without armed threat deployment of troops and equipment could take many months.

6. We have eliminated the threat of WMDs from Iraq. This is critical. All of the nonsense about us not needing to go into Iraq is rubbish. Bush would have been derelict in his duties to ignore that threat, even if he was only 75% sure. Take a look at Japan to see what a small atomic device can do.

7. We have not had a successful terror attack in the US since 9/11. Some of this may have been attributed to the war in Iraq, either with intel gathered or maybe just the distraction of the terrorists.

I support our troops, their mission and their officers. I am not the only one that looks at the results and am proud of what they have done.

If your dont support the president on the war I would ask if you peel back all the personal bs in this election year did he really make a major misake? If he made a mistake was it only by degrees and you are nitpicking what has been a major effort.

Coop, you used to glean a modicum of respect from me cuz I've interviewed you before & we live in the same town, but goddam if that isn't one of the most ignorant things ever said by a man of your stature & age. Treason? Is one of your boas a little too tight around your neck & cutting off the circulation to your brain? Let's talk about what constitutes treason. Let's see, Bush crashed the economy (record budget surplus reduced to record deficit), sat on his ASS & did not "protect the country" on 9/11 or worse yet knew all about it ahead of time and did NOTHING, bullied the Homeland Security Act & both Patriot Acts through Congress that have gutted the Constitution & taken Americans rights AWAY, LIED OPENLY to the American public about the reason to take this country to war(1st it was the non-existant WMD, then it was all about 'liberation'), Americans are hated more now & in more jeapordy traveling abroad than at any time in this country's history, allowed Cheney to throw fat government "rebuilding" contracts for Iraq to his old company (from whom he still receives a deferred "pension") Halliburton to the tune of over $1 billion, taken over $200 billion of US TAX DOLLARS to rebuild Iraq and sent more US jobs overseas than any president in history. The legal guidlines for finding someone guilty of treason say it can be "enemies both foreign and DOMESTIC". Dubya has done more to destroy this country and the livlihood of its people than any president in history. The guy's a fuckin' boob who can't even master the language. Treason cuz some musicians are barkin' about changing presidents with their right to FREEDOM OF SPEECH? If you aren't a fan of that lil' privilege we get here that's helped make you who you are then continue wrapping yourself in the American flag & keep your head in the sand with the rest of the sheeple who don't fancy thinking for themselves. Congratulations on being part of the problem. Please don't reproduce anymore.

Alice supports whoever he wants to support and has never let that influence his music. It's totally unprofessional not to mention cheap and easy. Where I disagree with Alice is that he's openly let his religious values sway his music of late. If you're gonna cut politics in music, then you cut that too. People take things way to seriously. They have a right to say whatever they want, just like you. True, it's easier for them to be heard, but you know what? They're trying to get all you dumbass 18-24 year-olds to put down your fucking one-hitter long enough to cast a vote.

I'm sick of people bitching about celebrities as though they're some otherworldly animals that have no concept of reality. Most of 'em weren't always filthy rich, you know. They worked shit jobs, lived in their cars, and starved like dogs before they made it big. Hell, some of these folks have a better understanding of the hard-knock life than a lot of you.

Point is, celebrities can say whatever they want, and you can agree, disagree, or ignore it. Don't like that? Eat a bowl of dick. Welcome to America.

I'll reiterate what I said much earlier in the day: Unless you've served in office of some sort, none of us, not even the celebrities have any concept of what it's like to be in the administration. DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT OF BUSH SO PLEASE REFRAIN FROM ACCUSING ME OF DOING SO!

Ask yourself this: Where do the celebrities get their facts that have shaped their opinions and opposition? I think they get it from the same sources we do...THE MEDIA! Trust that as gospel and we're all doomed.

Again, this is not an endorsement for the current administration. I'm just saying that our opinions don't really mean much unless we know the truth in its entirety which we and the celebrities will never know.

A vote for Bush is a vote for puritanism. It is a vote to push the country back to the 1700s. He will take away your freedom of speech, your freedom to choose and your freedom of having an opinion different than his. He will push his religious views on you. He has said that he uses the Bible as his guide (whatever happened to separation of church and state?). Because of his religious views he will look to ban R rated movies, Playboy, Hustler, FHM, Stuff and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue because they are works of the devil. Your favorite heavy metal band? Good luck finding them ANYWHERE!!! Howard Stern? Gone. Opie & Anthony? Gone! Any comedian that says "shit" or "fuck"....GONE!!! You will be left with "you might be a redneck if" jokes. If you think Bush/Cheney is the answer than the question is purely idiotic. If you are that religious that you want to re-elect a bible thumping simpleton for president...kill yourself to protest the way I feel and become a martyr. And if you don't like what I said, or the fact that I can say it, go live in China where free speech is not allowed. Or re-elect Bush because it will be gone here too.

take note of the part which says:

"The current Bush administration discusses Iraq in starkly moralistic terms to further its goal of persuading a skeptical world that a preemptive and premeditated attack on Iraq could and should be supported as a "just war." The documents included in this briefing book reflect the realpolitik that determined this country's policies during the years when Iraq was actually employing chemical weapons. Actual rather than rhetorical opposition to such use was evidently not perceived to serve U.S. interests; instead, the Reagan administration did not deviate from its determination that Iraq was to serve as the instrument to prevent an Iranian victory. Chemical warfare was viewed as a potentially embarrassing public relations problem that complicated efforts to provide assistance. The Iraqi government's repressive internal policies, though well known to the U.S. government at the time, did not figure at all in the presidential directives that established U.S. policy toward the Iran-Iraq war. The U.S. was concerned with its ability to project military force in the Middle East, and to keep the oil flowing.

Most of the information in this briefing book, in its broad outlines, has been available for years. Some of it was recorded in contemporaneous news reports; a few investigative reporters uncovered much more - especially after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. A particular debt is owed to the late representative Henry Gonzales (1916-2000), Democrat of Texas, whose staff extensively investigated U.S. policy toward Iraq during the 1980s and who would not be deterred from making information available to the public [Note 2]. Almost all of the primary documents included in this briefing book were obtained by the National Security Archive through the Freedom of Information Act and were published in 1995 [Note 3]."

as for this guy:
"Just reading all these posts and seeing the selected hearing and memory of all the Kerry supporters is ridiculous.

Everyone who has made a comment about the musicians having the right to free speech and that should not be denied has it all wrong. No one is being denied the right to free speech here. Do those musicians have the right to say whatever they want? Of course they do. But no where in the constitution does it say you are free from the consequences of your words. If you call some guy an asshole at a bar he's going to tell you to go fuck yourself. Do you have the right to say what you want to/about anyone without them having the right to respond? I just love Susan Saradon claiming that she was "black-listed" for her anti-bush rhetoric. The people are expressing their right to free speech by not buying your product Susan. Which leads me to my next point....it is not a wise career move to express such strong opinions on a topic when half of your audience disagrees with you. So...anyone in Hollywood can say whatever they want about whoever they want but they have to be ready for the consequences of their actions. Personally I wouldn't take the advice of someone in Hollywood anyway. They all live in their own world and have no concept of what the real world(the world we live in) is like. Please....I don't want to hear the "you're polluting the atmosphere, universal healthcare, help the poor, progressive tax" nonsense. When all of you stop driving your polluting limos, stop flying in your private jets, stop living in your huge energy-wasting manshions and start donating large portions of your income to charity then maybe I'll listen to what you have to say. Alice Cooper is a sycophanitc, Republican-dick-sucking, toadie sellout, and he can kiss my patriotic, bush-hating, liberal Ass.

Hendrix was a true American patriot because he wasn't afraid to express his true feelings on issues such as the Vietnam War and American Patriotism; as evidenced by "Machine Gun" and his rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner."

Ok, some of ALice Cooper's songs are catchy. But then again, so is typhoid.

I liked Alice Cooper's Brutal Planet album, I'll give him that, but only that.

But for Alice Cooper to impose his standards about politic
s place in rock music is hypocritical, as born again Christianity deserves even less of a place in rock music.

No one is being FORCED to attend a politically-themed rock concert. If they have a problem with it, they shouldn't buy a ticket.

If you are opposed to the war in Iraq and are planning on voting for Kerry you should probably take a look at his record first. There was not a single politician in America who was more adamant and vocal about ousting Sadam Hussein than John Kerry. The only reason he takes a stance against the war now is because of Howard Dean. Dean showed Kerry that he didn't have a chance of winning the nomination without changing his stance on Iraq.

KERRY: "I think we clearly have to keep the pressure on terrorism globally. This doesn't end with Afghanistan by any imagination. And I think the president has made that clear. I think we have made that clear. Terrorism is a global menace. It's a scourge. And it is absolutely vital that we continue, for instance, Saddam Hussein." (CNNs "Larry King Live," 12/14/01) "Larry King Live" 12/14/01

KERRY: "I would disagree with John McCain that it's the actual weapons of mass destruction he may use against us, it's what he may do in another invasion of Kuwait or in a miscalculation about the Kurds or a miscalculation about Iran or particularly Israel. Those are the things that - that I think present the greatest danger. He may even miscalculate and slide these weapons off to terrorist groups to invite them to be a surrogate to use them against the United States. It's the miscalculation that poses the greatest threat." (CBS "Face The Nation," 9/15/02) CHYRON: "Face The Nation" 9/15/02

KERRY: "[I] think we ought to put the heat on Saddam Hussein. I’ve said that for a number of years, Bill. I criticized the Clinton administration for backing off of the inspections, when Ambassador Butler was giving us strong evidence that we needed to continue. I think we need to put the pressure on, no matter what the evidence is about September 11 ..." (Fox News’ "The O’Reilly Factor," 12/11/01)

"If Saddam Hussein is unwilling to bend to the international community's already existing order, then he will have invited enforcement ..." —Sen. John Kerry, Op-Ed The New York Times 9/6/02 (Sen. John Kerry, Op-Ed, "We Still Have A Choice On Iraq," The New York Times, 9/6/02)

KERRY: "But the president, as I also wrote in that article, always reserves the right to act unilaterally protect [sic] the interests of our country." (MSNBC’s "Hardball," 9/17/02)

I agree with you 100% madball. You seem to be missing one point though. There is a difference between disagreeing with the presidents policies, and making unproven accusations and attacking our countries president "personally" while we are at war.

Right here on this board are perfect examples. Like...

Quote from Watling:
"I think Bush is a total fucking goon and needs to be put on trial for War crimes, some may disagree, but he is no worse than Saddam!"

Do you get it yet?

Things being said here are heard by our enemies as well as by us, and those words can be used to motivate as well as recruit terrorists. This will leed to "MORE BODY BAGS"

every day the war in Iraq is proving to be a smarter and smarter move. consider that we actually have some options against Iran and Syria now. Anyone naive enough to think Iran wont use nukes against Israel (threat or actual) or that Israel wont bomb their nuclear assets, like they did Iraq in 86?

our enemies are far more numerous than we think.

all of your responses to me are 1/2 thoughts. you dont finish them or think them through to their logical conclusion.

when you are younger it is easer to think black and white. as you get older you realize that very little is that simple.

conspiracy theories are easy. you dont have to think too hard and you can disprove or prove anything because its all in your head. taking things to the logical conclusion and actually examining the data available at the time, resources available to solve the problem and potential contingencies are another matter.

BLIND FAITH CAUSE A LOT OF DAMAGE just like the crusades. second, someone mentio9ned that springsteen stayed out of politics before, if he feels so strongly about how bad a job bush is doing doesnt that say something. third, i dont belive that the musicians that are tying to get kerry elected are saying "vote for kerry" they are trying to bring to peoples atention the evils and lies of Bush, they want you to get motovated and do your own research, so that YOU CAN STOP BEING SHEEP ONE WAY OR THE OTHER AND ACTUALLY MAKE UP YOU OWN DAMNED MIND. fourth, WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT ALL THIS "MUSICIANS HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY WHAT THEY WANT" OF COURSE THEY DO, ITS A GIVEN SO SHUT UP ABOUT IT. fifth, im very mad at the lies of bush, but the person who we should be more pissed off at is a man by the name of Ralph Nader (this is coming from a big supporter of the green party) he took votes from Gore, HE is the reason (besides bushs money) that we have monkey-boy in office now. yes im pissed at bush and my emotions rule me a bit, but I look for truth in things, its true the GW went awol and that he refused piss tests, and yes its true that i have done the same drugs that he did, but do i think I would make a good president, no I dont.

The most important thing that these musicians are doing is getting people interested in politics that othgerwise wouldnt care, and we should commend them, both the republicans and the democrats.

ALICE COOPER NEEDS TO FUCK OFF AND DIE, he is stating that using rock and roll to promote what you belive in is treason against rock and roll, in fact tis the complete opposite, rock has always been about rebellion and one of the major parts of rebellion is talking about politics and problems with the people in office, if you ignorant single minded metalheads (I was one of you at one time, and still enjoy a good metal soong actually listing to the demo of Before Dishonor atm) would open up your minds and realie that theres more to music than just thrash and hardcore and death metal, you would look at the rock of the 60's (and other times) and realize how many songs were protest songs, now there is no difference between 30 min of songs that are anti-govt, and a 20 min speach about how the govt is bad other than 10 min.

thank you if you read this, and take what I have to say to heart

one last thing, since i have decided that there is nothing good that I can do with this election, i have decided on the lesser of 2 great evils.... i will be voting for kerry, a man with an iq of 90 is better than one with an iq of 20 it would seem....

Gotta love when a thread just turns into a vicious political screaming match. Or not. I am a very staunch Anyone-But-Bush voter, so I might have a bias here, but I think the issue at hand with Cooper is very clear. However grudgingly, we all have to admit that if Cooper is calling so many entertainers traitors to America, this is pretty stupid. Different opinions does not make you a traitor. Worst case scenario, it makes you wrong. Dissent makes America, deal with it, no matter where you fall politically.

More likely, hes saying that politics has no place in Rock and Roll. Well to this, I gotta say where the hell have you been the past 40 years? From Anti Vietnam war music by the likes of Edwin Starr and CCR, through U2, extremely Liberal Punk music of the 80's through now, Rage Against the Machine (They ain't talking about dishwashers, people) Pro Bush country music (Toby Keith, I think it was? Sorry, I don't follow much country, not my cup o' tea) and countless other examples, music has always helped express strong political views. If you don't like that, well don't listen, but don't call them traitors to music because of their way of expressing a medium. That just stifles creativity, and kills the soul of music: expression.

Alice wasn't attacking free speech. It's more of an ethics thing. Oh, and you liberals can look that up in the dictionary. Who cares who he spends his time with? People like his music, so they buy it regaurdless. The point is, he isn't trying to further his career this close to election time. We all know that music has many sides but he's not like Springteen who needs a popularity boost or any type of reminder that he's still alive. (Because his music isn't.) If I felt they truly meant their stance, or even understood it, them maybe it wouldn't piss me off. But these political campaigning "artists" are just looking for atention.

First off... Saying that Michael Moore ain't fat, your'e in denial. He "IS" fat... And. He hates America, and is a socialist. He's SO anti establishment, he got his fat ass fired from Mother Juggs. You seriously must be an idiot in the liberal camp to get fired from that place...

Second... Where do you get off saying that Alice Cooper, one of the greatest enteratainers of all time, who was rocking his ass off before you were probably even an itch in your daddys shorts, is attacking free speech.. If you were "THERE" you'd know that he fought for free speech. His shows were more controversial than Ozzy, or any of these wanna be poser rock bands today. He is, and always will be the scariest man in show business. Don't believe it? Ask Rob Zombie, he even scares him...

>>> Let's stroll over here on this shall we? Attacking free speech. Okay. All year long.. Liberals, and democrats have launched an all out smear campaign against our president. He's been blamed for everything from 9-11 to Janet Jacksons wardrobe malfunction. (yes, Janet said that...) Do you guys not KNOW how ridiculous all that sounds to anyone with half a brain? However. Through all this, Kerry is your hero. Kerry can say whatever he wants. When challenged. He tells people to "Sit down, and SHUT UP!" Or how DARE you address me.. Pompus asshole that he is... And he can lead this smear campaign.. And your'e okay with that. However. When the shit hits the old fan, and he's caught lying about his history in Vietnam.. Oh.. He gathers his lawyers to threaten TV and Radio stations. He petetions book stores to remove anti-Kerry books from their shelves.. And you say. "ALICE" is attacking free speech? Better check your glass house before your throw bricks over here.

Onward...

Third.. Alice wasn't getting into a Pro Bush, or Pro Kerry stance on that. He knows what we all feel. Can we just have a nice hot cup of shut the fuck up, and SING THE DAMN SONGS! I'm tired of it... I cannot eat my hamburger with Hienz ketchup anymore, I'm not boycotting it persay, and it's not because of John Kerry, or anything like that. It's just that. When I sit down to eat, I shouldn't have to THINK about politics.. I should just be able to eat my fucking hambuger... Same with tunes... I just wanna listen to some good music. I don't give a rats ass what the artist THINKS about politics.. Just play the damn song I payed $35.00 to get into this place and hear already... That's all.. Just . Shut your freakin pie hole, and PLAY!

.. At the end of the day. I just wanna eat my damn hamburger, and not use Hienz ketchup. Cuz, condiments SHOULDN'T PISS ME OFF!!! And niether should music... Keep politics out of it...
Freedom of speech comes with responsibility. And alice is right, you are lucky, that Bush is tolerant. For it's the law in this country, that in times of war, you can be held accountable for attacking your president, your country, or conducting yourSELF or your MOUTH in anyway, that aids the enemy... The taliban is PAYING theatres in Pakistan to play Moores movies... Maybe he'll buy some Ben & Jerry's and get even FATTER!!! When asked what he thought would be a perfect America.. He answered. "Canada"... o-O?

Freedom of speech, is not for attacking your president during a war time. Your voice can be best heard at the polls in november, untill then. All this crap, suppports the enemies we face.. So shut the fuck up, and eat a hamburger... I say.. ALICE IS RIGHT!

You're fooling yourself if you think they hate us for Bush's policies and not for our freedom. Trust me...they want to kill all of us because we are Americans regardless of our party affiliation. In fact you could make the argument that they would rather kill liberals than conservatives. The liberal elitist with their low moral standards is exactly what the terrorists hate about America. You should be thanking conservatives for fighting for your freedom to have a low standard of morality.

COMMENT | The Grand Old Man Is Right
posted by : adrian denann

Alice Cooper, "the Grand Old Man" of rock & roll, has once again demonstrated his profound ability to step back, see the big picture, and appreciate it's absurdity. As an old veteran of the music business and a genuine "washed up has-been" (which Alice certainly is NOT), I think I understand what he was saying. While there are exceptions, the majority of celebrities from the entertainment industry are just that, ENTERTAINERS, and nothing more. Most of them have a high school diploma and perhaps a year or two of college under their belts. The rest of their lives have been spent portraying scripted characters, be it in films, on television, or on stage--- whether they happen to be actors or singers, the person you see in the spotlight is not usually a true reflection of who they really are. And the fact that they are a celebrity should not lend their opinions any more credence than the average man or woman in the street. Chances are their insight and understanding of our national and international interests are no better than the fellow who pumps your gas or the lady who checked you out at the grocery. On top of that, many of them are influenced by their fellow entertainers, who are influenced by Hollywood's self-proclaimed "intellectual liberal" class, who are no less elitists and out of touch with the average American and his or her real problems than the wealthiest corporate tycoon.

Regardless of our political affiliation, we owe it to ourselves to actually put some thought into how our vote will effect our future and the future of our country (as well as the world). Be an informed voter, not an air head who is lead (or mislead) by a group of pop culture personalities who care more about promoting their idealistic values than they do about the good of the nation and it's citizenry. Don't listen to the hype, read about the issues and find out where the candidates stand on them, and why. And don't listen to the candidate's rhetoric, look into their records. See how they voted on the issues and then decide whether or not they really reflect your own views and concerns.

I happen to be a registered Democrat who is pro-choice, pro-environment and pro-freedom. Because I am pro-freedom and am a firm believer in our personal rights, I have studied the writings of our Founding Fathers and made an effort to grasp the true essence of their intentions and how we as Americans are affected by the laws that govern us. For this reason I, personally, cannot and will not under any circumstances support John Kerry. The man frightens me. His ideas reflect those of Karl Marx far moreso than they do those of Jefferson, Adams, Franklin or any of the great men whose prime objective in gaining our independence from Great Britain was the guarantee of individual rights and liberties. Make no mistake about it, I'm no big fan of Bush, either, and disagree with many points in the Republican platform. But in the Democratic platform I see a real threat, especially in it's disregard for the sanctity of the Second Amendment, which serves as the true basis for our rights and freedoms as individuals. Without it, without the possibility of an armed citizenry being able to sufficiently protect itself from a tyrannical government, our liberties are nothing more than an uncertain whim from the Powers That Be.

This may not be an equally important issue to you as it is to me, but you owe it to yourself and to your future to be an educated voter and not a sheep following the parade because you happen to like the music. Whichever candidate you decide to pull the lever for, be it Bush or Kerry or Nader or whomever, do it because you've actually researched and thought about the issues and the person you feel best represents you, not because some entertainer or group of entertainers said "this is our guy".

I believe THAT was what Alice was saying. And to the person who called him a geriatric, washed-up has-been, I say this..... get your head out of your ass, kid. Alice Cooper is a music legend on par with all the other great innovators like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and the Beatles. What Alice did thirty years ago is still influencing the groups you're listening to now, and he will be remembered for his daring, cutting-edge originality long after most of today's flash-in-the-pan fad musicians have been long forgotten.

I, like Alice, have been sick and tired of all these rockers (Springsteen, REM, Ronstadt, Moby, Dixie Chicks, etc.) preaching to us like they have some sort of deeper insight than us about who is capable of running the country. In the past month, I have attended two concerts where, thankfully, not a single word was mentioned about politics, world events, war, or anything related to those topics. And these two artists, Sarah McLachlin and Seal, have WAY more intelligence than the other above mentioned artists combined! (and talent too) Keep it up Alice!
