METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT, ROB ZOMBIE Remember JOHNNY RAMONE - Sep. 28, 2004
METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett and Rob Zombie are among the musicians that have contributed testimonials to the enduring influence of Johnny Ramone and his seminal punk rock outfit the RAMONES in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

Kirk Hammett: "I would come into contact with Johnny in the mid-Eighties, and I was intimidated. I'd heard the legend — how much of a hard-ass he was. But when we met in 1996 on the Lollapalooza tour METALLICA did with the RAMONES, he was completely different. He told me, 'I never used to hang out with other bands, because I considered them my competition. Now that the RAMONES aren't together anymore, I can hang out and feel comfortable.' He was enjoying his retirement. He was getting into wearing these Hawaiian shirts that my wife would buy for him. He would call my wife and say, 'You need to get me some more of those shorts.' It was really funny: Here's the godfather of punk rock, and all he wants to do is wear Hawaiian shirts."

According to Hammett, he and Ramone would spend time playing records and videos of Johnny's favorite bands. "We'd watch old clips of SLADE and the MOVE," Hammett said. "He turned me on to the SONICS. And he loved LED ZEPPELIN and BLACK SABBATH — only the early stuff."

But after the RAMONES, Johnny rarely played guitar again. "There was always one around," said Hammett. "But his attitude was, 'I'm retired. I just want to hang out and watch horror movies.' And he did that. He did it very well."

Rob Zombie: "Whatever he said, you knew it was 100 percent honest. And you knew that he knew what he was talking about. He had an insane amount of knowledge, whether it was the stock market or old movies or baseball. He knew exactly what he wanted and how to get it. It didn't matter if he was ordering dessert at a restaurant or putting together a tour. He was the strongest guy I ever met. He never wanted to let down his friends — I must have heard him say that a million times. And he took the fans very seriously. If someone asked for a million autographs, he would sign a million times."

Johnny's former RAMONES bandmate Marky Ramone offered the following statement on his passing: "Johnny Ramone was my bandmate and brother for over 15 years. The bond between band members was closer than any others in the RAMONES' organization. John kept things in control when they could have spun out of control very easily. I'll never forget the day he asked me to join the RAMONES in 1978. I always admired his guitar playing. He was the originator of the down stroke 8th note guitar style, which is very difficult to do for hours on end like he did playing in the RAMONES. Four months ago, I knew about the serious nature of his illness, but for a while, he had a turn for the better. This comes as a shock, but it was inevitable because of the severity of his condition which worsened more recently. We were lucky enough to talk and hang out a few months ago when he was strong enough to do the commentary track on the DVD 'Ramones Raw', which was his last professional contribution to the RAMONES. I spoke to him most recently when I was in LA for the 30th Anniversary concert that we put together for RAMONES fans. Based on our last conversation, I felt this moment was coming. I'm sorry to see him go — like this. I hope the fans take the news as best they can. His legacy will live on in every band that has, is and always will be trying to duplicate the RAMONES sound. It's a sad day for RAMONES fans and a sad day for rock and roll."

Johnny Ramone, 55, died in his sleep at his Hollywood Hills home on Sept. 15 after a five-year fight against prostate cancer.

I was lucky enough to see the Ramones 5 times between '84 and
'95...and the last time was the best. Thanks for some great memories.

I'm glad these assholes are dying off. I always thought the Ramones sucked and what better way to end a shit band than to put some nails in a coffin - literally!

If I was at the funeral, I'd tip the casket over on Kirk Hammets hands. Fuck you!

3 Ramones dead and every fucking member of (insert name of shitty, shitty band here) is alive and well. Johnny Ramones guitar playing has influenced every punk and alternative (not to mention metal) guitarist to ever pick up the instrument; whether they are aware of it or not. This guy above me can go to fucking hell. If you don't enjoy the music it's your loss, but have some fucking respect to a true pioneer. The Ramones INVENTED an entire genre of music despite the fact they couldn't play...or sing...or do much of anything besides ROCK! The sheer balls it takes to do something like that is lost on so many of these little fuckwads that post here. Sheesh!

back to topic, it was nice of Kirk to offer up a few fond memories. The Ramones were never at the top of my list of things-to-listen-to, but I did like them in smaller doses. I've got nothing but respect for the Ramones, and Rob Zombie wins a few points for what he said. Kirk...well, he's still fuckin' strange.

Yes, he is. As he has proven hundreds of times on bbmouth.

DELIRIUMTREMENS - The anti success ethos of Punk didn't come about until late second, early third generation Punk bands like Exploited, GBH, UK Subs, etc. The first 2 waves of bands (Ramones, New York Dolls, Voidoids, The Clash, The Pogues, The Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Jam, etc) were all for becoming popular. The Ramones, as well documented, had a passionate desire to become popular and play large venues like their idols would.

Give me a fucking break. The Ramones sucked. Maybe if they really did have the "passion" everyone talks about so much they might have cared enough to learn how to play their instruments. Those that are truly lovers of music dedicate as much time as they can to it. Hell, Kirk even said that after he retired Johnny didn't even wanna pick up a guitar. I don't know about you, but I've never met a true musician who could go more than a couple weeks without picking up his instrument. Creating a genre made up of two-note guitar lines and off-key annoying vocal lines is not a great achievement...it's pathetic. These guys are hardly even musicians. Johnny was the originator of the downstroke eighth note style? First, that's bullshit, that is a style that's been around before rock was even invented. Second, that's really fucking easy to do. You can say Johnny was a pioneer if you want to, but he sure as well wasn't a good guitarist. I'm sick of this shit. Quit praising talentless fucks.

Knew exactly as much as they needed to. They weren't trying to be Yes, for Christ's sake. They were trying to write simple straight ahead rock and roll songs. And they wrote some damned good ones. It's also hard to question their passion. Have you ever known of another band band that toured in support of Live albums? The Ramones toured like madmen. They had no releases and would still tour constantly.

Lastly, I hate the talent arguement. If it was all about talent and practice. If it was all about talent Malmsteen's entire career would amount to much more than it does. A few neat guitar tricks and piles of terrible, unlistenable songs.

They always stayed true to their music to the end.Not many bands can say that.At least they ended their carreer without turning it into a 3 ring circus or a neverending tour with "Scab Ramones" filling in.

And you'll never hear Lemmy write a song for KISS!

Maybe you'd be right in TODAY'S world, where the "punks" are nothing more than recycled hippies, but when you're talking about a band who inspired the Clash and the Sex Pistols, back in that day, other bands WERE seen as competition.

i will take ur post as a lesson well learnt today=)i would frankly agree tat i dont have much of an idea on punk though i have heard the ramones discharge clash and the sex pistols.MINSTREL i would disagree abt the talentless part.it sure would be nice to be able to play arpeggios at will n be like peart or sing like tate.these musicians in question may have been limited in their abilities but they certainly didn lack in ideas and they were trendsetters.and there a bunch of ppl on this site or for that matter any given site who claim and they well may be right that they can play malmsteen or petrucci or peart.u know wat that really doesn matter cuz comin up w somethin original is far more difficult than jus bein able to play real good.well ppl say blackmore s smoke on the water is such a fuckin simple riff but dude show me a more instantly recognizable riff=)for that matter i wouldn even slag bands like dimmu or cof or offspring or greenday who ppl claim are posers in their respective genre.u know wat the fact remains these very popular bands introduce a lot of ppl to those genre s and many ppl go on to discover bands like emperor or mayhem or immortal who otherwise may remain anonymous for a multitude of reasons.the same goes for discoverin the other punk bands.i for one cant get into punk but it doesn stop me from realising their significance.
