METALLICA's LARS ULRICH Pays Tribute To DIMEBAG DARRELL - Dec. 9, 2004
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has issued the following statement regarding the death of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist Dimebag Darrell:

"This is unbelievable. To sit here and talk about Darrell in the past tense seems so wrong, so unfair, so unjust, I don't even know what to say. My heart goes out to Vinnie, to their families, to the other band members, and to the families and friends of the other people that were killed or injured, in this fucking senseless act of selfishness and stupidity.

"In 1985 I was fortunate enough to meet both Darrell and his brother in Dallas on tour. The first thing me and my friend did as soon as that tour was over, was to head straight back to Dallas and hang out with Darrell and Vinnie for a long time, cuz they were the coolest mutherfuckers that we had met after criss-crossing the states for three months. That was the beginning of a friendship that was anchored in love, respect, fun, outrageousness, music, booze, sweat, late nights, early mornings, hangovers, headaches, pounding eardrums, sore bodies... the list goes on.

"There's a tendency in these fucked up moments to use the word 'I' a lot and focus on one's own feelings of pity and shock... so instead let it just be known that thru these eyes Darrell was incredibly warm, open, fun, nutty, forthcoming, talented, embracing, unpretentious, accommodating and he always had a very attractive innocence about him that obviously made him never threatening and always welcoming.

"Darrell and his brother were the cornerstone of musical adventures that were always groundbreaking, pushing boundaries, challenging to themselves and to their fans, respected by their peers and always true musicians' musicians, and today the rock world is worse off because of this untimely and senseless waste.

"Much love and respect and thanks for letting me be a small part of your life and I know you are already having fun and throwing it down with Bon Scott, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Jimi, Cliff B., and the rest of the musicians and troublemakers that you are hanging with so prematurely."

this is my first post about dime after reading about this tragedy since i woke up today. i used to be big into pantera a few years ago, and then i went on an anti pantera crusade for i guess some pretty stupid reasons....

that being said, they were a great band, like them or not, and dime was a great guitarist. RIP dime...you'll be missed.

I haven't posted anything today but I felt like I should. I don't know what I can possibly say that everyone else hasn't said already. Pantera was my introduction to metal, as I'm sure it was to many of you out there. Dimebag is the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place. I have never met Dime but after hearing what everone has said today, I feel like I have known him my whole life. I was in my car driving to school early this morning when a friend called me and told me he was watching al of this on CNN. It was like a bad dream, I couldn't believe it. I was fighting back tears all morning. Dime, you were a one of a kind musician and when you played, you had the audience in the palm of your hand. I'm gonna miss you and your music. My heart goes out to his family, especially Vinnie. My heart goes out to his friends and family. And my heart goes out to all of you fellow metalheads that are grieving on this terrible day. Dime, I know you're up there in metal heaven. I'll see you there one day!

I never post but I felt it was appropriate... I first heard about this last night as I was going to sleep, and ended up not being able. I was into Pantera in the early to mid 90's, and had the pleasure of seeing them in concert at Nassau Colliseum in '94, but damn, I always held Dimebag up as one of the best metal guitarists ever, and I hold a deep respect for a man who led his life through music, doing what he wanted to do, and not what others wanted. Lars' words were kindly said, and I share his sentiment that "My heart goes out to Vinnie, to their families, to the other band members, and to the families and friends of the other people that were killed or injured, in this fucking senseless act of selfishness and stupidity. " As a musician myself, I casn deifnelty say metal and music as a whole has lost an incredible musician, and the world has lost a great guy.

I was thinking the boards would be full of "Maybe Phil put him up to it" crap, but fortunately, that does not seem to be the case. Everyone has bonded together in this shitty time and it's nice to see.

If anything, Phil is as grief-stricken as anyone. I can't imagine what it feels like to argue / fight with someone and then have them pass on...it must be terrible.

I've been jamming Pantera all day. This sucks. Dime, you will live on through the great music you created.

The loving bonds you created
No selfishness or hatred

You gave us the will to live
The gift of music to give
Forever you shall remain
In our ears, blood and brain

You meant more than life
Because you were our lives
But now we must mourn
As a great hero is gone

So in my tribute to you
These tears I cry are for you

2) Good thing a cop with some guts/courage responded quickly & blew the fukker apart before things got worse or that fukker could have sat on deathrow for decades.
3) metal shows could really be in trouble if venues, insurance companies, security etc rethink their policies based on this.
4) where is macabre praising the fukking scumbag that did this? After all, they constantly praise such filth..

I had the good fortune to witness TWO of my all time favorite bands throw down in Mexico back in '99. Those two bands being MetallicA, and PanterA. The intensity was thick, the show ruled, and I feel real proud to like both bands Catalogs from start to new. I pride myself on not throwing out sell out terms about anyone, because I've always felt a bond being a metal head, and when I heard the terrible news this morning tears welled up. It feels as though someone in my metal family has passed, and I'll even throw props to durst. It's a loss for all us metal heads far and near. Lars has basically summed up a very classy dude, with a very classy farewell, and for as much as we say about Lars, he's all class. I'm proud to be a Metallica fan, proud to be a Pantera fan, and extremely proud to be a "Dime" fan. I know you're with us in spirit, so I don't mind saying "We love you bro!" I hope you're reading these posts Vinnie, as an older brother myself, I can't imagine a thing like that happening to my bro, and I know this is no consolation, but Dime is in a better place bashing with great "passed musicians"............Adrian

I met DD a couple times over the 90s. I drum teched for Fates Warning back in '92 and we did a couple gigs w/ Pantera on the 1st lg of the Vulgar Dispaly tour. MAn that was a couple of crazy shows and crazier party after each gig. I remember the tour back in '02 w/ slayer and hanging back stage with Bostaph, King, Araya, and Darryl and Vinnie and just tearing up some crown. thank god I had a sober driver for the ride home. We shared some good drinking bouts among friends. He was a great guy, humble, funny as hell, and a good person to hang out with. He is missed around the world by metal fans who have had their hearts ripped out. What sucks is we'll never know exactly why this disturbed individual chose to take this action.

To all who are interested there is a guest book on legacy.com that is in remembrance of Darrell Abbott.
Here is the link: http://legacy.com/Legacy.asp

I was 17 years old when I 1st had the honor of hearing Pantera, at a high school party in Durham, Connecticut. Out of nowhere this mezmorizing, undeniably brutal riff began blasting through the home stereo system. It was "By Demons Be Driven", and I was absolutley stunned and stopped in my tracks by what I was hearing!! As a matter of fact, I almost dropped my beer on the floor, ha,ha,ha! As I listened to the song unfold and all the band members layering their parts, It was at that very moment that I realized that I wanted to weild the power and passion through my guitar that Dime was able to transduce through his! From that day forward I vowed to myself that I will one day be able to write riffs that carried people like the ones that Dime wrote. Riffs like the ones in: "A New Level," "Becoming," "This Love," "Domination," "Slaughtered", ect.. I had the priviledge of meeting Dime once, and it will always be one of the most remembered days of my life. Darrell has given me a gift that very few people get in this world.... He gave me a vision!!! He opened the door for me to see and hear past the normalcy of most music, and for that I am forever greatful! Thank you for being the baddest motherfucker to ever play the guitar!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Johnson
