Was PANTERA's Breakup A Factor In DIMEBAG DARRELL's Murder?

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Columbus police are trying to determine whether Nathan Gale, a 25-year-old semipro football player accused of killing DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, was incensed because of last year's breakup of Mr. Abbott's previous band, PANTERA, one of the top metal acts of the 1990s. "He loved PANTERA. He was like weird, man, about his obsession with PANTERA," said Mike Norris, who frequents a tattoo parlor across the street from Mr. Gale's home in Marysville, a town about 25 miles from Columbus. "I knew the guy was out to lunch, but I can't believe this." Mr. Gale, a landscaper, mechanic and sometimes bass player who had just made his car payment a day earlier, ran along the stage Wednesday night and yelled something before firing five or six times at Mr. Abbott, 38, from point-blank range. Abbott died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head, according to the Franklin County coroner's office. The 6-foot-3, 266-pound gunman had a man in a headlock and appeared to be reloading when the officer shot him in the face with a rifle, a police spokesman said. The hostage was unharmed, but Jeff Thompson of Dallas, 40, a technician with the band, was killed, as were Erin Halk, 29, a club employee, and fan Nathan Bray, 23. Two others were injured, one critically. Other victims of Nathan Gale at the Alrosa Villa club Wednesday night: Jeff Thompson ( photo), 40, Dallas. A member of DAMAGEPLAN's road crew who worked security for the last year. Nathan Bray, 23, Grove City, Ohio. A DAMAGEPLAN fan who went to the club for the group's concert. Erin Halk, 29, Columbus, Ohio. He worked for the club loading band equipment. Two others were wounded; one was in critical condition and the other had injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. Two others were treated at the scene.

Dimebag died playing metal, the way we can pay tribute is to keep the metal going. I've read that same thing in a few other articles throughout the day. They've stated that he yelled - "you broke up Pantera" prior to shooting. I have no idea how accurate it is, but someone had to hear him.
btw - I wonder if this guy had a Blabbermouth account. If he was that "into metal" - he might.

it was NO FACTOR. how SICK would that be?!? for at least this one day, the Randy Rhodes or Cliff Burton o Bonham of my barely-20 something of my genetation, i have nothing but sorrow and tears and sadness and pity for Vinnie and sorrow for the other families who have gotten little or no attention and all that. God bless Dime, i hope he's on the other side practicing his skilliz for all of us who will now be waiting deep down to see him on the other side to play his mind-boggling new riffs he's preparing tp blow us away with in heaven!!!

seeing all the headlines and the news, it's so fucking unbelievable. i can't fathom this sinister act. i mean come on, if the demon that did this was such a fan, he should have waited, a reunion was guaranteed. ah fuck, no good to would of/should of/could of.
it's so unbelievable. i am in the middle of moving, i went to pack my cd's away and for some reason, i double checked myself and put the pantera cd's at the top of the stack. this is so disheartening. i am glad i got to see Pantera on what became their last tour as well as Damageplan. I got lucky at one of the Pantera shows and caught 2 cups of beer from Dime when they threw it out to the crowd, granted not much beer was left, but enough to toast the band. I hope he's already jamming away in a better place. He's got Dave Williams, Randy Rhoads, Randy Castillo, Bonham, Jimi, Layne, and even Kurt.
To think, one wretched person ripped away a loved brother, family man and metal star from a lot of people, as well as 3 other innocent people. this one piece of shit has now sealed Pantera's fate. i said it before and will say it again i am sure, i hope this sick bastard burns slowly and suffers eternally in hell along with the 9/11 cowards and any other demented beasts that have committed similar acts.
so so sick.

I cannot begin to comprehend what has taken place in the past 24 hours. My heart is heavy right now. I can't imagine what Vinnie's going through right now. If it's any condolence to Vinnie and the Abbotts, just know that you are not alone. Your pain is felt and shared throughout the metal community.
It's amazing to see & hear how many people are touched by Dimebag's legacy. I keep getting choked up just reading some of the posts.
What makes this even more solemn is the fact that people got killed for just being there, having a good time.
Just like Dimebag was doing. Just like Damageplan was doing. And just like everyone else there was doing.
Truly the saddest day in metal, period.
I'll be sure to blast PanterA and make the whole fucking world know who Dimebag Darrell is.
My condolences to everyone involved.

Phil did not break up Pantera. thier inability to communicate with each other was thier downfall. Phil & Dime were mad at each other, sure. but you have to care about someone to be that mad. like someone else said, it's like an argument between brothers. it would have worked itself out eventually. i feel bad for Phil... he doesn't get the chance to make it right now. that must weigh heavy on him.

He loved pantera so much he wanted to take a part of them away huh? He was distraught about the breakup of pantera, well he certainly didn't help any chances of a reunion now did he. No, I don't blame phil at all. I really do want him to be a man though and come make a statement. And this is EXACTLY why that shouldn't be done--some fan might cross the line into fanaticism, take up arms and attempt to defend their band's "honor." After calling the Paul brothers drunks who were jealous of his side projects just a week ago, it isn't any wonder that Phil has nothing to say now. The fact that the killer may have been acting on his "behalf" is just the icing on the cake.

I've felt awful all day, brutal news. I'm watching Vulgar Videos right now. and that guy deserved nothing remotely close to this, that guy had a blast everywhere he went, except it's weird that in the video when he's doing the " This is me in ______" part, the only place he's worried is in Akron Ohio.

I do not have the mentality Nathan Gale has, because I believe metal is a brotherhood and I would never harm any of these guys, it’s the opposite for me. No matter what happens I will not be angered this way towards a hero or any metal guy, even if my fave guitarist joins Britney spears, which has happened to me. I don’t care, that’s the road they choose, and I mean we must stay together, don’t let mtv kill us, nor Nathan gale for that matter…

I think all of us in the metal world had a hard time today with this news and our prayers have to go out to all the families. It could of happened to any of us that go to concerts and I think this tragic event will change alot of things.....I know I would be concerned about going on a stage with all the sick assholes out there. This just reminds me of Randy Rhoads when I saw him in concert and then had to hear about his death a few months later.

This whole ordeal is totally fucked. Yes Phil and Dime were pissed at each other, they would of continued bashing each other in the press then settle the bad blood, same as Priest did. I hope that the psycho asshole who shot Dime is being analraped in hell. Had Vinnie got ahold of the jizzbag who shot Dime he would of torn him to pieces.

It baffles me how the fuck somebody gets into a venue with a loaded weapon, gets onto the stage and is able to carry out the shit that went on here!! Yeah, he obviously waited til the band had taken to the stage and there will have been chaos with fans jumping around to the music etc...but come on!! This is unreal. And as a result, we have deaths on our hands, not to mention the loss of a modern day guitar god!!
