DAMAGEPLAN Issue Statements on DIMEBAG DARRELL, JEFF 'MAYHEM' THOMPSON

As has been widely reported in the media, Elektra/Atlantic recording group DAMAGEPLAN suffered a horrible tragedy at their show in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed, as was the band's head of security, Jeffrey "Mayhem" Thompson, an employee of the club, Erin Halk, and a member of the audience, Nathan Bray. Chris Paluska, a member of the band's management team who was serving as tour manager, was shot and is in critical but stable condition. John "Kat" Brooks, the band's drum tech, was also shot and is being released from the hospital today.
DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul issued the following statement:
"With all his greatness and accomplishments on the guitar, Dime will be missed more for his giving personality, charisma, caring for others, love and most of all his HEART!! Twice as big as the state of TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!! Dime gave it all every day to each and every one of us and our lives have forever been hollowed without him...Thanks to all of you for reaching out to us in this time of our immeasurable loss. REST IN PEACE BROTHER DIME!!!!!!"
The surviving members of DAMAGEPLAN issued the following joint statement:
"Jeffrey 'Mayhem' Thompson was not just a true part of the DAMAGEPLAN family, but part of the whole Dallas music scene. He was friend to all, with a great personality. He bent over backward to help us all with his trademark phrases like 'What can I do for you sir?' and 'Coming up!' He also stated his willingness to protect us, saying 'I'd take a bullet for ya,' and unfortunately did in defense of our lives. He truly lived and died for his friends and made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to save ours. For this we will never forget. You will be missed big man."

Damn, what can I say that hasn't alreayd been said? I've been distracted at work since I heard about this yesterday morning. I really can't describe this sense of loss. All I can say is let's drink up in his memory this weekend, I know he would want that from us all. My best wishes go out to Vinnie, Damageplan, and all the other peope involved in this senseless tragedy. You will NOT be forgotten brother Dime!!

I graduated High School '93. I was also Student Council Pres. It was my job to play songs over the loud speaker for the prom. So I played the 4 crappy songs... (whatever was popular then) so at the end Isaid there is a special song not on the list and can be voted on. Then i put in my Vulgar tape (yes tape) and cranked WALK.. the opening riff thoughout the school. AWESOME!!! everybodys head spun in the main office that day, as i introduced my school to Pantera!!!

R.I.P. Darrell, you were the fucking shit bro, we'll always remember how you showed the world your unmatching charismatic genius, you mean a lot to everyone, and nobody forgets a man like yourself... R.I.P. to the other victims in this senseless tradgedy, this is ridiculous, but in today's world, I'm not suprised. CAN WE PLEASE do something to make sure dumb shit like this will NEVER happen again??? How many more do we need to lose before we realize it's not worth it. My condolences go out to the Abbot family and all of Damageplan and Pantera's friends. May we pick ourselves up from this and move on, smarter, stronger and wiser..........

I am proud to say that I am a Pantra fan and a damageplan fan! Vinnie, Pat, Bob, Phil and Rex must all be in a lot of pain as well are we. And to Dime’s lovely wife I am truly sorry for your loss. Darrel will live on through all of us with his inspiration and talent for music. So go to your Local club and Support original music and have a shot of Yagermeister and a Coors Light for him and his family.

Dime's friends in the biggest bands letting it all out onstage to
raise funds for the families of the victims. Picture it-80,000 fans
in Ohio Stadium giving a long screaming goodbye...that's my wish,at any rate.

dimebags death is so hard for me to deal with and i know that everyone else out there feels the same. No one ever wants to see a rock legend go down like this. But amidst all of this sadness and mourning, lets remember dime while he was still alive and all the wonderful things he did for all of us. My deepest sympathy goes to his family, especially vinny. we love you man. As for the rest of us, we need to remember that the metal community isnt really a community at all... it's a family, and this huge family will find a way to help each other grieve and move on together. i know the angels are headbanging up in heaven right now, dime will never be forgotten. my heart and soul goes out to dime ,vinnie, and other true fans of dime . i had lost my own brother the same day earlier to a heart attack. my sympathies to vinnie and the rest of his family as well as your current band and the rest of the guys in pantera.while i did not want to lose my own brother due to unfortunate natural causes what happened to dime shouldn't have happened. even though the scumbag who did this to him got his deserved punishment. it will not bring dime or my brother back to us. my deepest sympathies to all and i hope we can pick up the pieces and move on with our lives. i'm a fan myself and would not do such a thing to myself or someone else and i hope it doesn't make it impossible for me to get autographs or pictures with people who i'm a fan of. no one deserves any of this r.i.p. dime

This is my first post since this tragic thing happened. Rather than dwell on his tragic death, I would rather remember all the good times and good music that Dimebag and the rest of Pantera gave all of us. From the packed, beer soaked dorm rooms, full of people shouting the lyrics to Walk at the top of their lungs.....to just hanging out cranking Pantera tunes, to the concerts- etc... In a decade (the 90's) when grunge was taking over metal, PANTERA ruled ALL!!! Those guys were just amazing the energy they gave off onstage, second only to Slayer in their prime. I remember seeing them at Ozzfest at Pine Knob (now DTE Energy Pavilion).....talking to one of the security guys, telling him to get ready for it once Phil shouts "One, Two, Three, Four" and that mayhem would ensue....Sure enough, a couple songs later in the set, they tore into Fucking Hostile, and we were pummelled with sod, covered head to toe in dirt and grass- smiling ear to ear the entire time! I remember hanging out after a show on the Trendkill tour after the house lights went up, and Dime walked out on stage after the crowd had dissipated, covered in sweat, with picks sticking to his chest all over- he pulled one off his chest and tossed it to me- I won't sell it on Ebay! I remember a friend of mine getting his earrings ripped out while going crazy in the pit, blood dripping down the side of his face, but still smiling!!! I never got to personally meet him or anyone else in Pantera, but I have a friend who was lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks on tour with them, staying on their bus. She got to go to the Hard Rock Cafe with them to celebrate Dime's birthday, where he talked her into trying calimari for the first time. She told me about Dime and Vinnie's crazy shopping spree at Spencer's Gifts! And of course the home videos- wow, I can remember spending hours partying watching them, wishing we could live a lifestyle like that. Wow, Dime was only 3 years older than me- way to early to go! My thoughts and prayers go out to Vinnie and the rest of their friends and family. Thanks Dime, for all the good times and the legacy of good music that will be enjoyed for years to come! Even though I never knew you, it seemed like I did from all that you shared with your fans. R.I.P. my metal brother!!!

I was driving home last night thinking about this shit. I didn't know the dude, never met him. I just know his music. And the only thing I can say to explain myself and why I'm shedding these tears is that Dimebag represented me in a way. This is hard to explain, but playing Pantera music gave me credibility among my peers. If I could play Dimebag's riffs n solos, I knew was doing something right. He was my teacher in a way. Plus, Pantera - Dimebag in particular - didn't really fit in the mainstream. That's the way I want to live. That's the way I DO live.
It's all about fuckin' metal, dude. We may be brutes, thugs, rogues and demonic in the eyes of the mainstream, but we know the truth. Fuck the mainstream, fuck ClearChannel and above all, fuck the guy that killed Dimebag.
I'm rambling. Sorry. Peace and metal, people.

I've posted many times already about this and I'm going to continue because I cannot put into words how deeply saddened I am by this tragedy.
Why would someone do this to Dime of all people? WHY????
All he ever wanted to do was enjoy life and make people happy and some lunatic had to take all of that away from not only all of us heartbroken fans, but his own brother had to watch him die.
All I can say is I don't have any idea how bad this is for Vinnie. I've been crying for two days straight and I only met the guy twice. I wasn't this sad when my own grandmother passed away earlier this year and I know why. Our family knew that was coming, this was completely unforseen. One of my heroes was senselessly murdered :(
I do have an idea that I'd like to see happen, but obviously this would have to happen far down the road. I would like to see Vinnie, Phil, and Rex get together with one of Dime's best buds in the world, Zakk Wylde. That would be the only way I would ever want to hear another Pantera song live.
The pain of this is just not going away. I am going to try to keep myself together this weekend but unfortunately I see more tears to come :(

Let me first say that I am so very sorry for this tragedy that has shaken the music world and everyone else's worlds as well.
Vinnie and all of your family ~ My heart goes out to all you. Thank you so much for sharing your comments with your fans in this terrible time.
I had the honor of meeting Vinnie and Darrell when Pantera toured with Skid Row years ago. The kindness they showed me will never be forgotten and spending time with the both of them changed my life for the better. All I can say is Thank You!!
I don't guess there is much else I can say that everyone else hasn't already, but Dime will be missed and that sorry ass that took this wonderful man from us got what he desevered!

I called my brother, MARK BOND, from GODFEAR, yesterday morning. He was too sad to talk. Dime was his friend and idol. I remember him talking about when you guys played at the Ranch in Muenster, TX years ago. How you all drove around and had a good time. And the window insident when things got blown around. Dime and you never said a thing. Shows what kinda people you guys are. I hope that you get through all of this. I believe that you need your space to heal. All things will be answered in the end. . Every new newspost still feels like a kick in the gut, I can't imagine what Vinnie is feeling. My heart and thoughts go out to Mayhem as well, he sounded like an exceptional human being.
As odd as it may seem to bring this up, at the moment...do you people realize what impact this will make on the metal scene, musically speaking? I'm mourning Darrell too, but in looking towards the future, you know there's going to be some incredible metal written and performed by our metal bretheren as a result of this senseless and heartbreaking tragedy. This could very well be what jump-starts the next wave of brilliant metal, further cementing the importance of Darrell's contributions to music, and the lives he touched.
Stay strong, Vinnie. Our hearts & thoughts are with you always.

i only met him once last summer, and it was only for two or three minutes, but man i look back at that brief memory as so precious right now, and such a great memory. so down-to-earth, so humble and easy going. of all the people in metal, or anywhere for that matter, he was the one above all others who absolutely never deserved anything like this to happen. fucking shame.
i think it's getting to that time to start drinking to his memory and jam to Pantera all night.

God Damn this pisses me off. I live in Columbus and am a huge Pantera fan and although I wasn't into Damageplan and I didn't attend the show, I am truely shaken on this tragic loss.
Dime was a fucking legend and will never be forgotten.
That piece of shit that did this got off easy in my opinion, I wish myself and 100,000 others could have ripped that sick fuckin bastard's limbs off and poke his torso with rusty pitchforks until inches from death and make him feel the pain that I am feeling now.
